Erin and Paul review two films about lonely hired assassins: George Armitage's 1997 hipster-hitman black comedy GROSSE POINTE BLANK, starring John Cusack; and Jean-Pierre Melville's ultra-cool 1967 character study LE SAMOURAÏ.

Chris had this as an ex-VHS rental back in the day and has chosen the neo-noir black comedy crime drama, Miami Blues (1990). Miami Blues was an adaptation of Charles Willeford's novel, directed by George Armitage and produced by Jonathan Demme. The film starred Alec Baldwin as the charming yet psychopathic criminal Frederick J. Frenger Jr., Jennifer Jason Leigh as his naive love interest Susie Waggoner, and Fred Ward as the weary, veteran detective Hoke Moseley. The casting process was crucial, with Baldwin bringing a charismatic and unpredictable energy to his role, while Leigh's performance added depth and vulnerability to her character. Ward, also serving as the film's co-producer, provided a grounded and gritty counterbalance to Baldwin's manic character. When we sat down to record episode 207, we just wanted to talk about Fred Ward and how much we love him in everything! Several days after recording, the world learned that he had passed away, and we were left with an episode where we talk at length about him, not knowing what was to come. So, please think of this episode as a memoriam for a great actor who was great in every film he was in, with a wonderful smile and a tendency to outshine anyone he was acting beside. What a legend, and what an incredible body of solid work!We start the show off by talking about the 1982 movie "Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann" from director William Dear. Featuring some fairly dark moments for a PG-rated film, it's a fun little diversion with a strong supporting cast including Peter Coyote as the villain. We follow that up with a masterpiece from 1990 called "Miami Blues" from George Armitage. Costarring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alec Baldwin, it is a very unique blend of comedy, drama, police procedural and character study. This one should NOT be missed! After eight successful seasons in the NFL, Bernie Casey set his sights on Hollywood with one memorable turn after another, mostly in supporting parts with the rare lead as evident in this week's selections. In charting Casey's trajectory, Mike and Dino discuss the 1970s as a boom for athletes, specifically African-American males, transitioning into the movies with much success as well as Casey's roles in Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) that kicked his career off before his breakout roles as a flashy vengeance seeker and his highly understated and emotive turn as a paralyzed basketball player that demonstrated Casey's wide range of talent. There are no two ways around it folks. "You can never go home again." It's true in life, and it's mentioned probably three or four times throughout the course of the episode. Just putting out there that it could be important. The movie for this session of coffee and pie is an old favorite of Matt's and a new notch in Trevor's belt. Believe it or not, only 50% of the Nighthawks Diner had seen Grosse Pointe Blank at the beginning of the summer of 2018. We're pleased to announce that the numbers have significantly shifted since then. What better way to explore the trials and tribulations of attending a high school reunion, than by exploring it through the eyes of an assassin with social anxiety? That's exactly what director George Armitage did with John Cusack in the lead role, for the 1997 film. The movie is mostly about Martin Blank, a character that disappeared on prom night, ten years previous, and is now considering attending his class reunion. It would be as simple as reconnecting with old friends and rekindling an old romance, but Martin hasn't led the most savory life since graduation. A B-story throughout involves Martin's career as a hitman and assassin. Dan Akroyd plays a rival hitman who is trying to get Martin to join a newly formed hitman guild, or get him out of the way permanently. The result is a coming-of-a-certain-age comedy, mixed with some genuinely handled Hollywood Action. The boys let you know exactly what it's like revisiting a movie, that was about revisiting high school, twenty years after the movie was released.

Veteran stand-up comic and script supervisor (and nascent screenwriter) Daniela Saioni takes up the cause for Grosse Pointe Blank, the perpetually underrated 1997 action-comedy that may actually be John Cusack’s finest hour. Your genial host Norm Wilner will take any opportunity to put George Armitage’s name back into circulation, so that works out nicely.

Grosse Pointe Blank is full of great actors quipping fun lines amidst solid action sequences set to late 80’s music. What’s not to love? Correction: Eric mentions that the director, George Armitage, also directed 1971’s “Private Duty Nurses,” which Eric described as a “Nudie Cutie” movie.
