In this episode, Dan & Julia dispel the myth that winter gardens must be devoid of colour. Your hosts choose their favourite flowering and foliage plants to display in pots during the colder months, from shrubs to tiny bulbs. Dan reveals why the Japanese 'leisure knife' we call a Hori Hori has taken the gardening world by storm, and Julia explains how and when to plant onion sets - be quick, as time is running out! Your hosts round off with a list of jobs you can do in your garden over the next fortnight:Mulch around plants and over empty beds and borders. Over winter, worms will busily pull the organic matter into the soil, improving its structure. Collect leaves and add them to your compost heap, or pack them into jute sacks. They'll slowly decompose to make leaf mould, one of the most precious ingredients in good compost. Shredding them will make them break down faster.Brush paths with coarse sand or use a jet washer to remove moss and algae, which can become slippery when wet or icy.In exposed gardens, reduce the height of tall shrubs such as roses, buddleia, and lavatera to prevent them from rocking in high winds. For the same reason, newly planted trees should be staked low down.Turn off the water supply to outdoor taps and drain hosepipes before storing them. Install a water butt if you need a ready supply of water over winter. If you've experienced blight, black spot, rust, or mildew this season, removing and destroying any infected plant matter is essential. Cutting off this year's hellebore leaves is a good idea, allowing an uncluttered view of the nodding blooms in spring.Take a walk around the garden and inspect large shrubs and trees, noting any branches that appear as if they might fall. Remove them yourself using loppers or a pruning saw if you feel able. Call an arborist for a second opinion and to carry out the work if in doubt. Do the same exercise for fences, garden buildings and ornamental structures, such as pergolas. Give the lawn one last cut, avoiding emerging bulbs - some early-flowering varieties can appear above ground well before Christmas.Order and plant bare-rooted plants. This is one of the cheapest and most environmentally friendly ways to create a hedge, rose garden, orchard or woodland area. In this episode of Down the Garden Path, landscape designer Joanne Shaw discusses hellebores with returning guest Dawn Golloher from Gardens Plus. Dawn Golloher is the owner-operator of Gardens Plus, an independent garden centre in Peterborough, Ontario, specializing in easy-care perennials.  Here are some of the questions and topics covered in this episode: Can you give us a bit of a history on hellebores? There are several classifications of hellebores. Helleborus niger and Helleborus orientalis are the most common. Helleborus niger also called Christmas Rose. Native to the mountains of southern and central Europe. Christmas Rose can bloom around Christmas time in warmer regions. It is an early blooming perennial for part-shade to shade conditions. They have rose-like petals, some single and some double. The foliage often comes up after the flowers are evergreen. They are a low-maintenance, slow-growing plant and long living in your garden. Because they are slow growing, they are often quite expensive. Helleborus orientalis is slightly larger than Helleborus niger and is also called Lenten Rose. It is native to Asia Minor, Eurasia, Greece and Turkey. Also blooms late winter into spring. The foliage is dark glossy green, evergreen and palmately divided. They require shady to part-shade conditions, but it is important to note that they need well-drained moist soil. Not recommended for dry shade. The flowers are distinctive and a lovely palette of colours is available, so it is hard to have only one in the garden. Thanks to their early blooming, they do make a good pollinators. They are disease-resistant, toxic to cats and dogs (so bitter tasting that they really never get eaten) and deer-resistant, as well. Some of the favourites that Dawn highlighted were: Ivory Prince (hardy for lower zones) The Wedding Party series of double-flowering hellebores, including Blushing Bride, Confetti Cake The Honeymoon series of single-petaled flowers New York Night and Carnival Dawn provided some other easy-care perennial recommendations for this year. How is Gardens Plus different from larger nurseries? They add a personal touch to everything that they do. Starting a garden isn't just about planting seeds and tending greens. It's a compelling journey that goes beyond the soil – a tale that's not only visually enthrall but emotionally connect. To learn more about this horticultural expedition, we turned to an authority in conifers and ginkgo trees - Tom Cox, the creator along with his wife Evelyn of Cox Arboretum and Garden in Canton GA.   Cox Arboretum and Garden, a renowned botanical hub situated in an ideal geographic zone, is a distinguished example of a beautifully curated, year-round, environmentally connected garden thriving with over 4,000 species of plants. From its humble beginnings to attaining recognition as the largest species collection of conifers in North America, the story of Cox Arboretum and Garden is one of dedication, learning, and an enduring love for nature.Creating the Cox Arboretum and GardenTom Cox and his wife, Evelyn, didn't initially plan to create such a vast arboretum and garden. They purchased a plot of land they fell in love with, and it morphed into a space teeming with exotic conifers, trees and intricate landscapes. The availability of varying growth conditions within their land allowed them to cultivate a diverse blend of plant species, creating a unique ecosystem that thrives in balance. Plants from colder climates or the ones wanting more warmth, both found a comfortable home in their Arboretum. Traveling for Botanical Enrichment with Adventures Around the WorldTom's passion for horticulture extended far beyond the domestic soil. He and Evelyn embarked on travel to over 51 countries, exploring the world to discover exotic species, and returned to their arboretum to nurture their global bounty. This international exploration enriched the Arboretum with distinctive varieties of conifers and other plants, creating a fascinating botanical showcase that is a visual treat and a source of learning for gardening enthusiasts.Designing Gardens for Success One of the major takeaways from Tom's experiences is the emphasis on garden planning. Tom points out the common pitfalls that amateurs and even professionals sometimes fall into, such as failing to account for the ultimate size of plants during designing and neglecting to consider the seasonal adaptability of certain species. By understanding these essential factors, gardeners can prevent landscapes that become overcrowded or lifeless after the initial blooms of spring fade.  A Year-Round Garden for All Seasons Tom Cox emphasizes the importance of creating a garden that has four seasons of interest. Instead of focusing only on spring blooms, gardeners should incorporate plants that create interest in winter, summer, and fall. As per Tom, a successful garden will provide pleasure not just during the peak springtime but all year round. Plants like hollies, rhododendron, Helleborus, along with a variety of conifers and azaleas, are great options for maintaining interest and color throughout the year. The Future of Cox ArboretumThe admirable efforts of Tom and Evelyn have shaped the Cox Arboretum and Garden into an educational and intergenerational source of gardening inspiration. As the torch passes onto the younger Cox generation, the Arboretum promises to evolve further, inviting more garden enthusiasts into the folds of its natural charm and educating many more about the art of successful gardening. In conclusion, the story of Cox Arboretum and Garden is a testament to nurturing a garden's potential through careful planning, diverse planting, and a commitment to creating a year-round, interactive space. The arboretum's journey from a simple plot of land to a famed botanical site encourages us to cultivate gardens that work in harmony with nature and serve as beautiful sanctuaries for ourselves and future generations. This is an encore and remix presentation with Tom Cox. We know what happens when this regulation fails and one type of cells starts multiplying out of control: cancer. However, cancer has never yet been observed in certain organisms, including the simple microscopic animal Trichoplax adhaerens. In this study, these animals are exposed to large amounts of radiation and then observed over years to see if they can develop cancer or have interesting mechanisms of resisting it.   Journal Paper: Fortunato A, Fleming A, Aktipis A, Maley CC. 2021. Corinne Boyer of Washington is a folk herbalist, teacher, and author of five books on traditional plant-lore & folk magic. While modern herbalism focuses on the healing & benevolent properties of plants, in this episode we explore the darker, more mysterious aspects that Corinne has found through tales of old. We begin on feeling & discerning spirits of place: in the woods, water, & rock quarries; their potentially malevolent nature; offerings to appease them; and trusting intuition & an enchanted worldview.  Then we move on to spirits of the human dead: communicating with ancestors, synchronicities, and a formative childhood experience with her great-grandfather's ghost. For her first story, Corinne recounts an ill-omened lightning strike during an unprecedented storm; for her second, she tells of a sleepless night spent in a haunted Swedish inn. We conclude on oak folklore, herbs to keep ghosts at bay, and plants associated with The Devil. Check out Under the Witching Tree & Corinne's other books. It is a pleasure to welcome Lauren Elizabeth Palmer, Founder and Principal Designer at The Wild Mother Creative Studio.  Lauren, along with her sisters Leah and Callie, are based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where they offer incredible floral design as well as in-person and online education.  Their art is informed by their Afro-indigenous heritage, and reflects their reverence for the natural world, drawing together the threads of the past and present, beauty and activism, to tell the stories of today.  The care they take with their materials imbues their creations with passion and true joy.     2022 is the second year of the “Send Flowers To” campaign, through which the Wild Mother creates floral art installments to honor, draw attention to, and heal intergenerational community trauma.  This year, the campaign highlights Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, or MMIW, and involves an installation at the First American's Museum in Oklahoma City from May 7th to May 9th.  Please follow the links in the show notes or at https://www.thewildmother.com/ (thewildmother.com) to learn more and contribute to this important cause.         Garden People podcast, from https://www.instagram.com/violetear_studio/ (@violetear_studio) S H O W N O T E S https://www.instagram.com/thewildmother/ (Lauren and her sisters - The Wild Mother Creative Studio) https://www.thewildmother.com/ (The Wild Mother) https://www.thewildmother.com/sendflowersto (#SendFlowersTo for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW)) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/20/us/tulsa-greenwood-massacre.html (Tulsa Greenwood Massacre - the subject of #SendFlowersTo for 2021) https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/the-wampanoag-side-of-the-first-thanksgiving-story (The First Thanksgiving) https://mashpeewampanoagtribe-nsn.gov/ (Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe) https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/true-story-pocahontas-historical-myths-versus-sad-reality (Story Pocahantas' kidnapping) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGoTzQ-Q4Ts (Ride on King Jesus) https://www.edgar-degas.org/biography.html (Edgar Degas) https://www.robinwallkimmerer.com/ (Robin Wall Kimmerer) https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/bell-hooks (bell hooks) https://www.yo-yoma.com/ (Yo-Yo Ma) P L A N T L I S T https://calscape.org/Ceanothus-thyrsiflorus-(Blueblossom-Ceanothus) (California Lilac), Ceanothus ssp. - Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Blueblossom' https://www.prairienursery.com/vanilla-sweet-grass-hierochloe-odorata.html#:~:text=Description-,Sweet%20Grass%20is%20a%20cool%2Dseason%20grass%20that%20spreads%20easily,braided%20and%20burned%20as%20'smudge. The common name is winter rose or Lenten rose because if flowers in winter. Looks rose-like don't you think? Floral meaning: Floral Meaning: said to provide protection and a vase of hellebore, brought into  a room will drive away an unpleasant atmosphere and replace it with tranquility. ·         Hellebores grow best in part shade, with moist but well-drained soils. They will, however, tolerate most soils as long as not waterlogged. ·         Slow to get established, and can be left alone for years. ·         Don't like being disturbed as this sets them back. ·         If you do want to divide, or need to transplant, autumn is best.  ·         Dig the whole plant, wash off soil, then divide with a sharp knife between growth buds.  Leave at least 3 buds on each division.   Mercedes' Tip: · Make excellent cut flowers, that last up to 5 days.
