This episode discusses why high yield bonds, often labeled as ‘junk bonds,' can be an attractive investment and how today's market is different from previous decades. Jack Holmes, co-manager of the Artemis Global High Yield Bond fund, shares their strategy of focusing on European and UK markets and prioritising higher quality bonds, like BB and B ratings, while avoiding riskier CCCs. Additionally, learn why shorter-dated bonds are favoured in the current yield environment and how inefficiencies in the high yield space create opportunities for active management. What's covered in this episode: What is high yield? Setting the scene for the high yield marketEurope over US exposureWhy CCC isn't appealing The inefficiencies of the high yield marketWhat active management adds for investorsHow the fund uses currency in the portfolioWhat does it mean when a high yield bond is ‘called'?Adding value through market mispricingWhat does rate cutting mean for high yield? Why this manager is optimistic about next yearBacking cyclical or non-cyclical for 2025?More about the fund: The Artemis Global High Yield Bond fund is a high-conviction fixed income portfolio investing in 60-100 high yield issuers across the globe. Managers David Ennett and Jack Holmes look to increase the value of shareholder investments through a combination of both income and capital growth. To do this they focus on the under-researched, inefficiently-priced opportunities further down the high yield spectrum, while their global approach looks to unlock opportunities and insights that regionally-focused peers may miss.Learn more on fundcalibre.comPlease remember, we've been discussing individual companies to bring investing to life for you. He emphasises the importance of actively choosing which segments of the market to invest in and explains why high yield bonds are appealing in an inflationary environment. The interview also delves into the fund's investment approach, including its preference for BB and B-rated securities, as well as its focus on developed markets like the UK and the US. David also shares the rationale behind a few unique holdings, such as Crocs, and why they make a better investment than fashion choice. American politics has an age problem. At least, that's what voters think. According to a new New York Times/Siena College poll, 33 percent of Democrats who want a different candidate for president in 2024 pointed to Joe Biden's age as a motivating factor. But a nearly equal percentage say they aren't keen to have Biden for a second term because of his job performance — or lack thereof. Could the answer to appease voters be that Democrats just need some young blood? Or is there a deeper rift between voters — especially young ones — and political leadership?Jane Coaston brings together Michelle Cottle, a Times editorial board member, and David Brooks, an Opinion columnist, to parse out what we are really talking about when we talk about age in politics. “What is age actually a proxy for?” Cottle asks. “Is it your concerns about fading ability, or is it concerns about a lack of fighting spirit?” But for Brooks, the question is centered more on stagnancy: “Why has the gerontocracy been able to stay in power? What is it about these people that they've been able to persevere and just stick around?”Mentioned in this episode:“The Case for Age Limits in American Politics” by Jack Holmes in EsquireYou can read Michelle Cottle's work in The New York Times here and David Brooks's work here(A full transcript of the episode will be available midday on the Times website.)

In today's episode, I head to East London to the epicentre of what was once the Olympic Village during London 2012, to link up with a Paralympic cyclist who quite literally gives us a guided tour throughout our 1 Mile stroll. Since securing her 17th Paralympic Gold Medal during Tokyo 2020, my latest Monday Miler has become Great Britain's most successful Paralympic athlete of all time, the iconic Dame Sarah Storey. Private detective Michael Shayne came to radio on October 16, 1944 and we’re celebrating the anniversary of “the reckless, red-headed Irishman” with two of his radio mysteries. Two of radio’s most talented stars – Wally Maher and Cathy Lewis – headline as Shayne and his loyal secretary Phyllis Knight. From 1944 until 1947, the pair starred in stories that blended crime-solving with witty banter. We’ll hear “The Murder Trial of Jack Holmes” (originally aired on Mutual on May 21, 1945) and “Dr. Grant’s Dilemma” (from August 13, 1945).
The fiancée of a newly convicted murderer dies while trying to give Mike a clue that would clear her intended. Author of Jack Holmes and His Friend.
Can a gay man and a straight man be friends? Edmund White explores the gay-straight axis in Jack Holmes & His Friend.
