We're heading Southbound on this episode and talking about one of the greatest bands of all time, The Allman Brothers Band.Craig Cohen (The G.O.A.T - A Brian DePalma fan podcast) and me go back to the beginnings of this legendary Southern band (just don't call them a Southern Rock band) and how Duane Allman cobbled together a diverse group of musicians whose common cause was to blend, rock, r&b, jazz, blues, and country into a unique sound and take jamming to new heights...and lengths. We focus on the classic era of the band from 1969-1973, and while it was an era beset by tragedy, it yielded some of the finest music ever made and made legends out of Duane, his brother Gregg, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe.Stand back and give this episode a listen!

The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. "Behind the Scenes with Rob Bleetstein: Archiving the Legacy of the NRPS"Larry's guest, Rob Bleetstein, is known for his role as the host of the live concerts on the Sirius XM Grateful Dead station and as the voice of Pearl Jam Radio. In today's episode, he discusses the recently released live album "Hempsteader" by the New Riders Of The Purple Sage (NRPS), where he serves as the archivist and producer. The New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band that emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969, with original members including some from the Grateful Dead. Their roots trace back to the early 1960s folk and beatnik scene around Stanford University, where Jerry Garcia and David Nelson played gigs together. Influenced by American folk music and rock and roll, the band formed, including Garcia on pedal steel guitar initially. The discussion delves into the background of the NRPS, their albums, and notable tracks like "Panama Red," written by Peter Rowan and popularized by the band. The album "New Riders of the Purple Sage" features Garcia on pedal steel guitar and includes tracks like "Henry," a humorous tale of marijuana smuggling.Throughout the show, various NRPS tracks are highlighted, showcasing the band's eclectic style and songwriting. Additionally, news segments cover topics such as the DEA's agreement to reschedule marijuana and updates from the music industry, including rare concert appearances and tour plans.Overall, the episode provides insights into the NRPS's music, their influence on the country rock genre, and relevant news in the marijuana and music industries. Larry's Notes Rob Bleetstein who many folks know as the host of the three live concerts played every day on the Sirius XM Grateful Dead station. Also the voice of Pearl Jam Radio. And, most importantly for today's episode, the archivist for the New Riders Of The Purple Sage and the producer of the Hempsteader album. Today, featuring recently released NRPS live album, “Hempsteader” from the band's performance at the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead, NY on June 25, 1976, just shy of 48 years ago.New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band. The group emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969 and its original lineup included several members of the Grateful Dead.[2] The band is sometimes referred to as the New Riders or as NRPS.The roots of the New Riders can be traced back to the early 1960s Peninsulafolk/beatnikscene centered on Stanford University's now-defunct Perry Lane housing complex in Menlo Park, California where future Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia often played gigs with like-minded guitarist David Nelson. The young John Dawson (also known as "Marmaduke") also played some concerts with Garcia, Nelson, and their compatriots while visiting relatives on summer vacation. Enamored of the sounds of Bakersfield-style country music, Dawson would turn his older friends on to the work of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and provided a vital link between Timothy Leary's International Federation for Internal Freedom in Millbrook, New York (Dawson having boarded at the Millbrook School) and the Menlo Park bohemian coterie nurtured by Ken Kesey.Inspired by American folk music, rock and roll, and blues, Garcia formed the Grateful Dead (initially known as The Warlocks) with blues singer Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, while Nelson joined the similarly inclined New Delhi River Band (which would eventually come to include bassist Dave Torbert) shortly thereafter. The group came to enjoy a cult following in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties through the Summer of Love until their dissolution in early 1968.In 1969, Nelson contributed to the Dead's Aoxomoxoa album in 1969. During this period Nelson and Garcia played intermittently in an early iteration of High Country, a traditional bluegrass ensemble formed by the remnants of the Peninsula folk scene.By early 1969, Dawson had returned to Los Altos Hills and also contributed to Aoxomoxoa. After a mescaline experience at Pinnacles National Park with Torbert and Matthew Kelly, he began to compose songs on a regular basis working in a psychedelic country fusion genre not unlike Gram Parsons' Flying Burrito Brothers.Dawson's vision was prescient, as 1969 marked the emergence of country rock via Bob Dylan, The Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, the Dillard & Clark Band, and the Clarence White-era Byrds. Around this time, Garcia was similarly inspired to take up the pedal steel guitar, and an informal line-up including Dawson, Garcia, and Peninsula folk veteran Peter Grant (on banjo) began playing coffeehouse and hofbrau concerts together when the Grateful Dead were not touring. Their repertoire included country standards, traditional bluegrass, Dawson originals, and a few Dylan covers ("Lay Lady Lay", "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere", "Mighty Quinn"). By the summer of 1969 it was decided that a full band would be formed and David Nelson was recruited to play lead guitar. In addition to Nelson, Dawson (on acoustic guitar), and Garcia (continuing to play pedal steel), the original line-up of the band that came to be known as the New Riders of the Purple Sage (a nod to the Foy Willing-led Western swing combo from the 1940s, Riders of the Purple Sage, which borrowed its name from the Zane Grey novel) consisted of Alembic Studio engineer Bob Matthews on electric bass and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead on drums; bassist Phil Lesh also played sporadically with the ensemble in lieu of Matthews through the end of the year, as documented by the late 1969 demos later included on the Before Time Began archival release. Lyricist Robert Hunter briefly rehearsed with the band on bass in early 1970 before the permanent hiring of Torbert in April of that year.[8] The most commercially successful configuration of the New Riders would come to encompass Dawson, Nelson, Torbert, Spencer Dryden (of Jefferson Airplane fame), and Buddy Cage. After a few warmup gigs throughout the Bay Area in 1969, Dawson, Nelson, and Torbert began to tour in May 1970 as part of a tripartite bill advertised as "An Evening with the Grateful Dead". An acoustic Grateful Dead set that often included contributions from Dawson and Nelson would then segue into New Riders and electric Dead sets, obviating the need to hire external opening acts. With the New Riders desiring to become more of a self-sufficient group and Garcia needing to focus on his other responsibilities, the musician parted ways with the group in November 1971. Seasoned pedal steel player Buddy Cage was recruited from Ian and Sylvia's Great Speckled Bird to replace Garcia. In 1977 and 1978, NRPS did open several Dead and JGB shows, including the final concert preceding the closure of Winterland on December 31, 1978.In 1974, Torbert left NRPS; he and Matthew Kelly co-founded the band Kingfish (best known for Bob Weir's membership during the Grateful Dead's late-1974 to mid-1976 touring hiatus) the year before. In 1997, the New Riders of the Purple Sage split up. Dawson retired from music and moved to Mexico to become an English teacher. By this time, Nelson had started his own David Nelson Band. There was a reunion performance in 2001. In 2002, the New Riders accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from High Times magazine. Allen Kemp died on June 25, 2009.[13][14] John "Marmaduke" Dawson died in Mexico on July 21, 2009, at the age of 64.[15][16]Pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage died on February 5, 2020, at age 73. (Rob – this is mostly notes for me today so I can sound like I know what I'm talking about. I'll go through some of it to set some background for the band, but feel free to take the lead on talking about those aspects of the band, and its musicians, that you enjoy most or find most interesting – keeping in mind that our target audience presumably are fans of marijuana and the Dead.) INTRO: Panama Red Track #1 Start – 1:49 Written by Peter Rowan “Panama Red” is well known in the jam-grass scene, but it's perhaps not as widely known that Peter Rowan wrote the song.It was originally a 1973 hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and the first popular version with Rowan singing and playing it came when the supergroup Old & In the Way, released their eponymous album in 1975, two years after their seminal time, in 1973, and a year after they disbanded. Jerry Garcia was the connective tissue between the two projects, playing pedal steel in the early New Riders and banjo in Old & In the Way. “I wrote ‘Panama Red' after leaving my first project with David Grisman, Earth Opera, around the summer of the Woodstock music festival [1969],” Rowan explains. “It's a fun song because it captures the vibe of the time. I was from the East Coast, but I found there to be more creativity on the West Coast during that time period.“Nobody wanted to do ‘Panama Red' on the East Coast. I took it to Seatrain [the roots fusion band in which Rowan played from 1969 to 1972], and when it eventually became a hit, the manager of Seatrain claimed it. I never saw any money, even though it became the title of an album for the New Riders of the Purple Sage [1973's The Adventures of Panama Red]. “The subject was "taboo" in those days. You did jail time for pot. So that might have scared commercial interests. But Garcia was a green light all the way! "Oh sure" was his motto, both ironically and straight but always with a twinkle in his eye! After Seatrain management kept all the money, Jerry suggested I bring the song to Marmaduke and Nelson!" “When David Grisman and I got back together for Old & In the Way in 1973 with Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Khan, we started playing it.”From the NRPS album “The Adventures of Panama Red”, their fourth country rock album released in October 1973. It is widely regarded as one of the group's best efforts, and reached number 55 on the Billboard charts. The album includes two songs written by Peter Rowan — "Panama Red", which became a radio hit, and "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy". Another song, "Kick in the Head", was written by Robert Hunter. Donna Jean Godchaux and Buffy Sainte-Marie contribute background vocals on several tracks. SHOW No. 1: Fifteen Days Under The Hood Track #41:55 – 3:13 Written by Jack Tempchin and Warren Hughey. Jack Tempchin is an American musician and singer-songwriter who wrote the Eagles song "Peaceful Easy Feeling"[1] and co-wrote "Already Gone",[2] "The Girl from Yesterday",[3]"Somebody"[4]and "It's Your World Now".[5] Released as the opening song on the NRPS album, “New Riders”, their seventh studio album, released in 1976 SHOW No. 2: Henry Track #6 1:19 – 3:05 "Henry", written by John Dawson, a traditional shuffle with contemporary lyrics about marijuana smuggling. From the band's debut album, “New Riders of the Purple Sage”, released by Columbia Records in August, 1971. New Riders of the Purple Sage is the only studio album by the New Riders to feature co-founder Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead on pedal steel guitar. He is also featured on the live albums Vintage NRPS and Bear's Sonic Journals: Dawn of the New Riders of the Purple Sage.Mickey Hart and Commander Cody play drums and piano, respectively, on two tracks—"Dirty Business" and "Last Lonely Eagle".Then, there's a swerving left turn away from romance tunes on this album with ‘Henry‘, whose titular hero has stepped right out of a Gilbert Shelton underground comic. At a frenetic pace the story of Henry's run to Mexico to fetch twenty kilos of (Acapulco?) gold unravels, with Henry driving home after sampling the wares “Henry tasted, he got wasted couldn't even see – how he's going to drive like that is not too clear to me.” It's a joke, but a joke that sounds pretty good even after repeat listens.SHOW No. 3: Portland Woman Track #9 :34 – 2:00 Another Marmaduke tune from the NRPS album released in August, 1971.A bittersweet love song progressing from touring boredom to be relieved by a casual hook-up with the pay-off with the realization that the Portland Woman who “treats you right” has actually made a deeper connection “I'm going back to my Portland woman, I don't want to be alone tonight.” SHOW No. 4: You Never Can Tell Track #15 :51 – 2:26 You Never Can Tell", also known as "C'est La Vie" or "Teenage Wedding", is a song written by Chuck Berry. It was composed in the early 1960s while Berry was in federal prison for violating the Mann Act.[2] Released in 1964 on the album St. Louis to Liverpool and the follow-up single to Berry's final Top Ten hit of the 1960s: "No Particular Place to Go", "You Never Can Tell" reached number 14, becoming Berry's final Top 40 hit until "My Ding-a-Ling", a number 1 in October 1972. Berry's recording features an iconic piano hook played by Johnnie Johnson. The piano melody was influenced by Mitchell Torok's 1953 hit "Caribbean". The song has also been recorded or performed by Chely Wright, New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Jerry Garcia Band, Bruce Springsteen, the Mavericks, and Buster Shuffle. JGB performed it almost 40 times in the early ‘90's. The song became popular again after the 1994 release of the film Pulp Fiction, directed and co-written by Quentin Tarantino. The music was played for a "Twist contest" in which Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) competed (and were the only contestants shown in the film). The music added an evocative element of sound to the narrative and Tarantino said that the song's lyrics of "Pierre" and "Mademoiselle" gave the scene a "uniquely '50s French New Wave dance sequence feel". OUTRO: Glendale Train Track #17 1:30 – 3:14 Still another Marmaduke tune from the “New Riders of the Purple Sage” album released in late summer 1971. Jai Johanny Johanson aka Jaimoe is the only living original member of the Allman Brothers Band, that was formed in 1969. During his illustrious career he was also a member of Sea Level. Jaimoe presently leads a jazz-rock group called Jaimoe's Jasssz Band. In 1995, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Allman Brothers Band. Award winning program director Ray White caught up with Jaimoe at his hotel in September of 2013 to talk about his early days as a musician, hooking up with Duane Allman and his most recent release Jaimoe's Jasssz Band's Renaissance Man. In our showcase segment, we look back at the career of guitarist/singer/songwriter Dickey Betts who was a mainstay in the Allman Brothers Band for many years and launched several other bands after his departure. Episode 140: Another 15 Million Unit LP, Long Time Since Phoenix Flew And More April 19, 2024 The ironies in life… This hour-long show just played on RadioFreeNashville.org and yesterday I was informed that Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band had passed away peacefully. He was 80. Jaimoe is the soul survivor of the original ABB now. The irony being that this particular episode started off Wednesday on radiofreenashville.org talking about the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East sessions from the summer of 1971. In fact, the second and third tunes from that session, on this episode, are from those Fillmore East fabulous concerts. If you didn't catch it during the live radio show, I was living in South Florida and was hanging out with some people I would call cool and we were doing a lot of concerts (and a fair amount of extracurricular recreational things). The concerts were affordable, like five dollars to eight dollars and we didn't mind traveling an hour to the Miami jai alai fronton to see the Allman Brothers Band live. That allowed plenty of time to get our heads right. It was a big party! It was the Fillmore East sessions! We were blown away. And in the first three months that the double album was on the market, it's sold a half million copies. I still have mine and you probably know I'm in love with it! Stormy Monday is a killer, you don't love me is a great jam and the four sides contain wall-to-wall great southern rock. BROTHERS AND SISTERS: The Allman Brothers Band and the Inside Story of the Album That Defined the 70s (St. Martin's Press) by Alan Paul is a deep dive into the time before and after 1973's Brothers and Sisters. It was not only the band's best-selling album, at over seven million copies sold, but it was also a powerfully influential release, both musically and culturally, one whose influence continues to be profoundly felt. Celebrating the album's 50th anniversary, Brothers and Sisters the book delves into the making of the album, while also presenting a broader cultural history of the era, based on first-person interviews, historical documents and deep research and a trove of never-before-heard interviews conducted by the band's “Tour Mystic,” Kirk West. The five-year period between Duane Allman's 1971 death and the Allman Brothers Band's 1976 breakup was a remarkable run for the group that helped define the era, rock history and American culture and politics. They played a major role in electing President Jimmy Carter; were intimately linked with the Grateful Dead; and inspired the Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the entire Southern Rock genre. Gregg Allman's marriage to the iconic star Cher also put the couple at the vanguard of a newly emerging celebrity media culture. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: ALAN PAUL is the author of the New York Times bestseller One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band, the definitive book on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band and Texas Flood: the Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The latter has been optioned and is being developed for both documentary and feature films. Hisfirst book, Big in China, is about his experiences raising an American family, forming a band and becoming an unlikely rock star in Beijing. He also founded Friends of the Brothers, the premier celebration of the music of the Allman Brothers Band, featuring members of the Dickey Betts, Jaimoe and Gregg Allman bands. He is a regular guest on radio shows and a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal, Guitar World, and other publications. He lives in New Jersey. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steve-richards/support
New York Times best-selling author Alan Paul is this episode's guest to talk about his new book Brothers and Sisters: The Allman Brothers Band and the Inside Story of the Album That Defined the ‘70s. Brothers and Sisters is the Allman Brothers Band's most successful album, selling over seven million copies. Its influence, both musically and culturally, continues to be felt today. I ask Alan about what's in the book, including his personal interviews with members of the band and the previously unheard interviews conducted by Allman Brothers Band archivist, photographer, and “Tour Mystic” Kirk West. We also get into the backstories to Allman Bros. classics like "Ramlin' Man", "Southbound", and "Jessica". Alan also reveals how the Allman Brothers came to the aid of Jimmy Carter's failing presidential campaign, contributing to his election. Plus, we get into how Brothers and Sisters caused rifts within the band; and how their work inspired a new Southern rock genre. Alan is also the author of the phenomenal 2014 book One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band. It was the product of 25 years of reporting on the band, and was hailed by Rolling Stone as a "thorough account" and by Guitar World as "definitive". And here you are listening to another episode of The Paul Leslie Hour. Welcome to here. This interview with Jaimoe comes from our archives and we can't wait to present it to you. Our guest is still active to this day with his own band, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band. In 2012 they released their debut studio album “Renaissance Man.” Worth listening to folks! Whoah. Keep in mind everyone, The Paul Leslie Hour is made possible by people just like you. Just go here and put a little something into the hat. We depend on you so we can do more. Author Andrew Wild returns to the podcast to talk about his brand new book “The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song”! The story of the Allman Brothers band is one of triumph followed by tragedy followed by a remarkable comeback in the wake of that tragedy. As it's stated in the book's overview: "The music of the Allman Brothers is the pure distillation of the four main ingredients of American music: blues, rock, jazz and country. At their best, they transcended genre: they just were." In this episode, Andrew talks with me about the legendary Duane Allman, his little brother Gregg Allman, who, along with his bandmates Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe carried on in the wake of Duane's passing and shortly after bassist Berry Oakley's death. It wasn't easy. They went through a rough period in the late 70s into the 80s before marking their comeback in the late 80s, a comeback that sustained right up until the death of Gregg and Butch. We'll cover the legendary albums including ‘At Fillmore East' and ‘Eat A Peach' and the later members of the band Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, who helped rejuvenate Gregg and his bandmates in the late 90s into the 2000s.Purchase a copy of "The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song" in the UK through Burning Shed HERE and in the US through Amazon HEREListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HERE Visit The Big House Museum's website HERE Visit the Booked On Rock Website HEREWatch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM TIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! In this episode, we discuss one of the best albums for warm, sunny, Southern vibes: the Allman Brothers Band's 'Eat A Peach,' which was released 50 years ago last week! There weren't as many great albums released in 1972 as there were in 1971, so these 50th anniversary episodes will be fewer and farther between this year, but this is definitely one worth celebrating...Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dr.cropper)

Virginia Schenck, known by the stage name VA, is an accomplished international vocal artist and jazz performer, utilizing both straight-ahead, spoken word, and free improvisation. VA is an imaginative vocalist with a broad stylistic reach. She can soothe her audience with a beautiful ballad, invigorate them with a re-imagined standard and challenge them with a powerful blast of free improvisation. Yet all of these aspects exist within one singular and unique voice. VA often spices up her shows with world music influences from her own vocal exploration and CircleSinging, which she studied under the legendary Bobby McFerrin. Last year, she was honored to perform with McFerrin as part of his Atlanta, Ga., CircleSongs concert. In addition to performing with him, Virginia was handpicked to put together the exclusive 12-voice ensemble that led McFerrin's CircleSongs for the concert. Read more about that here. A Florida native, VA came to Georgia after graduating from Florida State University. While her degree was in Music Therapy, she studied jazz piano, voice and dance. She started singing jazz gigs while in school and continued to perform after she launched her music therapy career. Her love of jazz was enriched through a friendship with drummer Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band. Performing regularly in Atlanta’s top jazz and music venues, her recent appearances also include New York & Seattle for a play with totally improvised music, “The Gift”, with aerial dancers at The Robert Mondavi Ctr/UC-Davis, St Patrick’s Cathedral/Dublin, IR, Chartres Cathedral/France, Kripalu Yoga and Retreat Center, and Rome, Italy. VA has released three critically acclaimed albums, which showcase her artistry. Her debut CD, VA (2012), generated serious buzz with jazz fans, immediately receiving global airplay with such artists as 2012 NEA Jazz Master, Sheila Jordan, who exclaimed, “Wonderful CD… Wonderful singer!” Her CDs, Interior Notions (2015) and Aminata Moseka: an Abbey Lincoln Tribute (2017) have followed similar suit. Her fourth album, Battle Cry (2020), is set for release on January 3. As a new class of inductees ascend to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, we look back to this classic episode featuring Jai Johanny Johanson, a founding member of the Allman Brothers band. "Jaimoe" as he is known, had many interesting stories to share and we were all ears! Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995, please enjoy this classic MSMO. We will be back next week with a new episode. 2012 - Ocean Springs native Jai Johnny Johanson got his first big break as a professional drummer in 1966 when he joined Otis Redding's band. Over the next couple of years, he played for several big names including Percy Sledge, Joe Tex, Johnny Jenkins and Clarence Carter, but by 1968, found himself struggling to make ends meet. Johanson was about to leave the south and move to New York to pursue a career in Jazz when he heard of a young guitar player named Duane Allman, looking to form a new band. The two men were soon joined by bassist Barry Oakley and that trio would serve as the foundation for the Allman Brother Band. In this episode, Johanson shares his memories of that time including the phone call he got from Cadillac Henry about joining Otis Redding’s band. He recalls going to see Percy Sledge at the Apollo and how he got the nickname, Jaimoe. Finally, he discusses what made Duane Allman such an exceptional musician and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. PHOTO: J. Bayer: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jlbnyc/3388544821/

Reggie's love for music began in Cleveland, Ohio where, at a young age, he played trumpet and piano and developed his musical talent. As his love for the performing arts developed, Reggie decided to further his knowledge in music and he went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and his Masters in Music Technology. A professional musician with over 30 years experience in the music business, Reggie has been living, performing and recording in the New York Area for over 20 years. In addition to performing and recording with several well-known artists and bands, such as Babyface, Lionel Hampton, and Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, Reggie has his own bands that specialize in jazz, R&B, and gospel music. His jazz band, The Reggie Pittman / Loren Daniels Quartet, performs original compositions by Reggie and partner Loren Daniels, and their 2010 release, Point A to Point A, received much acclaim in the jazz press. Reggie is a talented composer and arranger; his original music appears on Point A to Point A, and on his upcoming Pittman / Daniels Quartet release Smilessence. Also an accomplished Producer, of note is his recording Poet I Am, a collaboration with poet / lyricist /performer Lottie Porch in which Reggie composed the music and produced the CD.

My guest this week is the legendary keyboard player Reese Wynans. Wynans is probably best known as the keyboard player in Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble. From '85 until Stevie's death, they were like a freight train - touring worldwide and recording smash albums like "Soul To Soul", "Live Alive" and the final SRV album, "In Step". Hardcore Allman Brothers fans also know that Reese was a member of the Second Coming, which, from November 1968 to March 1969 also included guitarist Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley. That band was the launching pad for initial jam sessions with Duane Allman, Betts, Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe that led to the formation of the Allman Brothers Band. Reese also had stints with Boz Skaggs, Joe Ely and Jerry Jeff Walker. Since moving to Nashville in 1992, Wynans has played keyboards for a number of country artists including Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, and Hank Williams Jr. Wynans has also played for blues artists Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Colin James, Ana Popovic, and has been a full-fledged member of Joe Bonamassa's band for a number of years. Enjoy my conversation with Reese Wynans, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
Ocean Springs native Jai Johnny Johanson got his first big break as a professional drummer in 1966 when he joined Otis Redding's band. Photo Credits: Carl Vernlund
Pat Bergeson visits the Truetone Lounge to talk guitar and to share his experiences as a veteran touring and studio musician. Besides his past work with Chet Atkins, Lyle Lovett, Wynonna, and Madeleine Peyroux, Pat shares of his recent work with guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel, and touring with Les Brers, a group of former Allman Brothers that includes Butch Trucks, Jack Pearson, Otiel, and Jaimoe. Throughout the episode, Pat’s playing and tone demonstrate why he has continued to be an in-demand guitarist in Nashville.
Jai Johanny Johanson (pronounced Jay Johnny) learned to play the drums while growing up in Ocean Springs. He remembers playing clubs in Gulfport while still in high school. Through contacts made while playing around Jackson State, Jai Johanny landed a job as drummer for Otis Redding. He explains how that led to a spot in Percy Sledge’s band. By 1969, Jai Johanny had a new stage name. That year, Jaimoe (Jay Moe) would help form a new band with an unknown guitar player named Duane Allman.
