Rock Icon Carmine Appice drops by to chat about Vanilla Fudge history and their local tour dates in the NorthEast in May! Carmine was in various bands after Vanilla Fudge, including Cactus, Beck, Bogart and Appice, Rod Stewart, King Cobra, Blue Murder and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne! Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called The Pigeons, formed in  1965 with organist, Mark Stein, bassist, Tim Bogert and drummer, Joey Brennan, and guitarist, vocalist and US Navy veteran, Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for hit-record girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as “While the World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge.”In 1968, Vanilla Fudge headlined the Fillmore West with Steve Miller. The group then performed “You Keep Me Hangin' On” on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, “The Beat Goes On.” Despite its avant-garde conceptualization and execution, the LP was a hit and climbed into the Top Twenty. That summer, Atco reissued “You Keep Me Hangin' On,” and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top Twenty. The band had three albums in the Top One Hundred, two of which were in the Top Twenty and one in the Top Five Single. The band toured with Jimi Hendrix, played dates equal billed or headlined with groups such as Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others; late in the year, they toured with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.For more  on Vanilla Fudge click on the linkhttps://vanillafudge.com

1981 - December: Joan Jett & the Blackhearts “I Love Rock-n-Roll”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2022 34:46

I Love Rock 'n Roll is the first album by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and the second solo album by Joan Jett.  Born as Joan Marie Larkin, Joan Jett got her start in the music industry as a teenager when her family moved to the Los Angeles area and divorced shortly thereafter.  She was a founding member of the all-girl band The Runaways at the age of 16.Jett began her solo career in England in 1979, where she recorded songs with some of the members of the Sex Pistols.  Later that year she returned to Los Angeles where she connected with a songwriter and producer named Kenny Laguna.  Laguna would relocate Jett to Long Beach, New York, and assist her with both her first solo album and the formation of the Blackhearts. The group spent a year touring and building up a following in the New York Area before releasing I Love Rock 'n Roll.  This album would be a mixture of original songs and covers, and the title track would spend 7 weeks at the top of the U.S. charts.  The album was a commercial success, selling 10 million copies, and is Jett's most successful album to date. (I'm Gonna) Run AwayRob starts us off with the second track on the album, a deeper cut, and an original song written by Jett and Laguna.  It has a punk feel, as does much of the album, and the lyrics reflect a break-up.Crimson and CloverThis cover of a song originally performed by Tommy James and the Shondells alternates between a slow and fast tempo, but maintains a hard rock edge throughout, unlike the more psychedelic aspects of the original.  Jett was questioned about her choice not to change the pronouns in the lyrics from female to male, and she commented simply that the change in lyrics would make the song not rhyme.Summertime Blues Eddie Cochran co wrote and performed this song in 1958.  Joan Jett & the Blackhearts speed this one up and give it a punk edge.  It was not originally on the album, but appeared as the B-side to a single from Jett's prior solo album “Do You Wanna Touch Me  (Oh Yeah).”  It would appear on the album as a bonus track when released on CD.  I Love Rock 'n RollThis title track is the big hit, and is also a cover originally performed by The Arrows in 1975.  Jett first heard the song while touring with The Runaways, and she recorded an early version of the song with members of the Sex Pistols in 1979.  It was the number 3 song on the U.S. charts for the year of 1982. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Street Life by Randy Crawford (from the motion picture “Sharkey's Machine”)This action film featured a stunt involving a plunge out of the Peachtree Plaza hotel, the tallest building in Atlanta at the time. STAFF PICKS:Jealous Lover by Rainbow Bruce starts off the staff picks with the lead-off track from a 4-song EP of the same name.  Frontman Joe Lynn Turner and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song.  Turner wrote the lyrics in about 5 minutes, inspired by an argument he had with Blackmore, which made him think about a fight he'd recently had with his girlfriend.  “And it's hard to discover you're like any other jealous lover.”Young Turks by Rod Stewart  Brian features the first US single from Stewart's eleventh album, Tonight I'm Yours. The song tells the story of two young lovers who run away from their parents to make their own way.  Interestingly the phrase “young turks” never appears in the lyrics.  The video included an early example of break dancing.Marie Marie  by The BlastersWayne brings us a rockabilly song, or as The Blasters would describe it, “R&B in cowboy boots.”  The song tells the story of a guy who is told to leave a family's daughter alone, and so he sings to her as he is leaving.  I Love You by Climax Blues BandRob's staff pick is a soft rock hit.  It tells the story of a guy who is rescued by the love of his wife.  It is the second biggest hit by the Climax Blues Band after  Couldn't Get It Right.  It hit number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:September Fifteenth by Pat Metheny & Lyle MaysThis jazz instrumental was a feature of "Jazz Flavors" on radio station 94Q in Atlanta in December of 1981.

When just beginning his career as a fitness trainer over fifteen years ago, Eric had the opportunity to develop fitness programs for teens on the autism spectrum and undergo high level ABA training both clinically and academically. As he became increasingly dedicated to working with this unique population, Eric found a near-total lack of information concerning best practices and approaches when creating fitness programs for those with autism.Steadily, and over the course of a decade working with hundreds of athletes who had significant variance in their ability levels, he began to create the outline for Autism Fitness as a business and mission; providing not just fitness programs, but effective and reliable fitness programs for every individual with autism and related disabilities. Autism Fitness was to serve as a bridge between the professional fitness and autism communities (families, educators, and therapists).Today, with his athletes in the greater New York Area, the Autism Fitness Toolbox, and the Autism Fitness Certified Practitioner program, Eric continues to build a gateway towards a more optimal, independent future for the ASD community and future generations. There are many reasons why people harass or intimidate others. Whether it be the need to show power, the ability to force what they want through blackmail, or just for narcissistic self gratification. Whatever the reason is, it’s wrong and the industry needs to create better policies to address it. Before we fix it, we have to acknowledge it Here are some thoughts for topic: Has the “industry proclaimed driver shortage” exacerbated the problem of sexual harassment? Has the need to continually recruit new drivers to compensate for the driver churn contributed? Has low CDL training standards contributed? We are honored to have on the show tonight Joshua Friedman of Friedman & Houlding, one of the nations most recognized attorneys defending the rights of others in the area of sexual and racial harassment.  Super Lawyers 2014-2018 Best Attorneys in New York for 2009-2018 New York Magazine as one of “New York Area’s Top Attorneys Mr. Friedman will be discussing his professional experience with sexual harassment victims and will discuss his ongoing case with CRST. Welcome back to another episode of The Isles Faithful Podcast! In this episode, our 7th episode already - we talk to Jim Baumbach of New York's Newsday as he has been covering the New York Islanders arena stories since the very beginning. Jim and I actually go way back to 2007, back to my time when I covered the Islanders on a regular basis over on my blog www.islesblogger.com. Jim goes into detail on the NEW arena set to be built in Belmont, right on the border of New York City and Long Island's Nassau County. The difference this time is that there is state land involved. The similarities involve heaps of opposition to the project, plus the literal red tape that comes with mega projects. We also go into Transportation, other projects around the New York Area and some of the nuances involved with the Islanders playing parts of the next three seasons at their OLD home in Uniondale at Nassau Coliseum. This type of talk isn't for everyone, but it's an important on-going story that seems never-ending for the New York Islanders and Islanders fans. Please give Jim Baumbach a follow on Twitter, if you're not already. You can also find his articles on Newsday's website. Thanks as always and we'll see you in Episode 8!

Success sometimes comes at a cost and you may find yourself with a successful business, but days full of work you’re not excited to do or feeling trapped trading hours for dollars. Today on the MoreCheeseLessWhiskers.com podcast we're talking with Bogna Wanda, an architect in the New York Area. Bogna has a successful practice, always busy for over 30 years, and we had a really great conversation about how to transition from being a busy architect, which you could translate to any billable hours professional like, an accountant, a lawyer, a massage therapist, to becoming a business owner where you create something that can generate business, without it being all about your billable hours. Taking more of a proactive approach to the work you do, rather than passively accepting any business that comes your way. We talked a lot about the philosophy of that transition and we really came on a great plan to actually make it happen. I love how excited Bogna is when we start outlining a viable plan that she's excited about executing, and I excited for you to listen in and think about how you can apply the same principles to your business.   Links: Show Notes: MoreCheeseLessWhiskers.com/096 90-Minute Books: ProfitActivatorScore.com Scorecard: ProfitActivatorScore.com Email Mastery: EmailMastery.com Want to be a guest on the show? When just beginning his career as a fitness trainer over fifteen years ago, Eric had the opportunity to develop fitness programs for teens on the autism spectrum and undergo high-level ABA training both clinically and academically. As he became increasingly dedicated to working with this unique population, Eric found a near-total lack of information concerning best practices and approaches when creating fitness programs for those with autism. Steadily, and over the course of a decade working with hundreds of athletes who had significant variance in their ability levels, he began to create the outline for Autism Fitness as a business and mission; providing not just fitness programs, but effective and reliable fitness programs for every individual with autism and related disabilities. Autism Fitness was to serve as a bridge between the professional fitness and autism communities (families, educators, and therapists). Today, with his athletes in the greater New York Area, the Autism Fitness Toolbox, and the Autism Fitness Certified Practitioner program, Eric continues to build a gateway towards a more optimal, independent future for the ASD community and future generations. When not working with his athletes he is either in the gym, playing outside with friends, or reading.

On the seventh episode of the Loose Threads Podcast, I talk with Abe Burmeister, one of the founders of Outlier, a New York label that set out to build the future of clothing. What started as a brand aimed as casual urbanists who used bicycles as their primary method of transportation has morphed into a highly experimental, technical and refined menswear label. We had a great talk about the founding story of Outlier; how the brand planted the seed selling online and grew the business from there; the challenges of scaling a bootstrapped business; why they decided to start producing products in Portugal, in addition to the greater New York Area; how the brand dabbled in wholesale, but ultimately retreated, which ended up fueling the next phase of growth for the company; and the perils of managing a season-less brand without much time for vacation. Abe is an incredibly intelligent guy and it was a pleasure talking with him. We packed a lot into this episode and I hope you enjoy. Her mounting feelings of helplessness led her to Alanon where she learnt the full impact of the disease and how her angry outbursts contributed to his weakness and made her a victim.
