“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” is the best musical I have seen in years.  Opening night was one to remember. John Berendt, the author of the best-selling book, was on hand for the curtain call and to see this new musical version written by Taylor Mac come to life. The excitement of the evening spilled out into the street as people chattered about what a great time this was. At the Goodman Theatre, 70 N Dearborn St, Chicago, through August 11, 2024. This week, writers John Berendt and Taylor Mac discuss the Goodman Theatre's world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Berendt is the author of the original book the musical is based on, and Mac wrote the book for the adaptation. Learn more about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical, here. This conversation originally took place July 8, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical Southern charm is bountiful in Savannah, Georgia. But behind polite smiles, the eccentric residents are filled with secrets and motives. When wealthy antiques dealer Jim Williams is accused of murder, the sensational trial uncovers hidden truths and exposes the fine line between good and evil—which sparks Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change the city forever. The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—John Berendt's 1994 blockbuster non-fiction book, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist that was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 216 weeks—is realized at Goodman Theatre by creators MacArthur “Genius” Grantee Taylor Mac (book), Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) with choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs a cast led by Tony- and Grammy-Award winning actor J. Harrison Ghee as The Lady Chablis; Tony Award nominee Tom Hewitt as Jim Williams; and Olivier Award nominee Sierra Boggess as Emma Dawes. JOHN BERENDT was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He attended Harvard, where he majored in English and wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. Upon graduation he was hired by Esquire magazine—first as an editor, then as a monthly columnist. Later, he became the editor of New York Magazine. It was during a trip to the South in the mid-1980s that he discovered Savannah—a cloistered, inward-looking garden city that basked on the Georgia coast, reveling in its own peculiarities and giving not a thought to the outside world. He was enchanted and began writing about the city and its people in what would eventually become the non-fiction book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. TAYLOR MAC is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist, a Tony Award Nominee (for Best Play), and the recipient of the Kennedy Prize (with Matt Ray), the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim, a Drama League Award, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award, two Obie's, two Bessies, and the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award. Mac is the author of Joy and Pandemic (Huntington Theater); The Hang (with Matt Ray); Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Hir; The Fre, The Walk Across America For Mother Earth, The Lily's Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; and The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac. The documentary Taylor Mac's A 24-Decade History of Popular Music recently premiered on HBO to critical acclaim.

What would you think if you saw injustice all around you? We expect justice, especially in our court system but it seems we don't always get it as is the case of Marcus Johnson, a man serving a steep sentence for a petty crime.  It was his case that brought me to Savannah, Georgia, and with my trusty journalist friend, "Anonymous", we were going to solve Marcuse's case and the corruption of the Georgia court system that was happening right before our eyes.  The case wasn't easy. We had to deal with a nefarious group, named "The Shadow Consortium".  It was filled with demonic people who hated what America stands for.  Once we were on the case, we couldn't walk away. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Welcome to The Vinyl Sessions, a combination of highlights from the 2022 episodes, and some new content centered around the art and influence of music. This time of year, it can be very difficult for many, myself included. Holidays are stressful in their own category. I still grieve the loss of my parents around this time of year and continue to process grief and loss of my mother, who passed in January 2021. Not a day goes by where I don't think of each of them and what they would want for me. And of course, I ask them for their guidance from above in my life and for whatever influence they can give to help my Georgia Bulldogs to victory on game day. I can struggle in processing my grief, but I know that I am not alone at this time of year. When I enter the “darkness”, music has been an uplifting medicine to keep me afloat, re-energize my body, and stimulate my mind. I love discovering new music, sharing new music, and talking about music.  John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (simply called “the Book” in my hometown of Savannah), was quoted as saying: Someone once wrote that musicians are touched on the shoulder by God, and I think it's true. You can make other people happy with music, but you can make yourself happy too. Because of my music, I have never known loneliness and never been depressed. So today, I want to share how my podcast guests over the past year have referred to music and its influence on their life, careers, and mental health. In 1994, a New York writer released a very southern gothic, non-fiction, crime novel. “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” became a national sensation. John Berendt’s seductive prose and his cast of eccentric characters drew readers into the lush culture of Savannah, Georgia. But the central plot was a scandal from 1981. Semi-closeted socialite, Jim Williams, had shot his lover dead in the study of his home. He went through four trials for the murder of Danny Hanson, a record in Georgia at the time. Berendt’s book became a movie in 1997, directed by Clint Eastwood. Many people don’t know the real story of the Mercer House murder. This is a look at the case, as well as the book and movie that captivated the nation. S2 E10 THE GOOD AND EVIL SANCTION.  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is Eastwood's second movie in 1997 (preceded by next episode's Absolute Power). Based on the blockbuster true crime (the title of a film in LAST week's episode) novel of the same name by John Berendt. John Cusack has the unenviable job of acting alongside the director's daughter, Allison Eastwood, as he meets wacky southern characters and future problematic poster boy Kevin Spacey, in full "Ah say Ah say" mode. There is a murder trial and a garden but not a murder trial inside a garden where the tomatoes throw themselves at a lying witness - it's the movie we need, not the movie we want.1975's The Eiger Sanction is also based on a blockbuster novel of the same name by the mysterious Trevanian (kind of a 1970s  satiric thriller version of QAnon but clearly labeled as fiction). Clint trained his ass off to prep for this movie about spies, assassins, mountain climbing and George Kennedy. He plays a retired assassin called back into the game because... it's personal. Duh. Someone is going to kill someone on a big mountain and... it doesn't make a lot of sense but plays into Eastwood's natural affinity for rugged, physical filmmaking. Ken and Jack are joined by famed songstress and beauty Andi to discuss both films. Then a rundown of season two favorites and least favorites. Probably some google reviews. Maybe a marriage or a birth or a shooting to get y'all to come back for S3. THE EIGER SANCTION: 00:02:54MIDNIGHT IN THR GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL: 00:29:00S2 WRAP UP: 01:00:02

Walking Through Walls with Philip Smith "Philip Smith's compelling readable memoir of his father—a psychic, exorcist, hands-on healer, and… decorator!—is as entertaining as it is bizarre, all the way to its unexpected and deeply moving conclusion." —John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil For the first time since 2014, Bestselling Author & Renowned Artist Philip Smith returns to the Outer Limits of Inner Truth Radio Show. Philip talks about his Father Lew Smith whom some could say has similarities to legendary mystic Edgar Cayce. Philip Smith's pictographic work was first seen in the seminal Pictures Exhibition at Artists Space. Curated by Douglas Crimp, the show included Robert Longo, Sherrie Levine, Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein and Philip Smith. These five artists established the movement that has become known as The Pictures Generation that now includes Cindy Sherman, RichardPrince, Laurie Simmons and others. The curious and psychologically-charged images in Smith's new paintings are drawn from found imagery in 1950s Cold War spy manuals, lingerie ads, books on mysticism and numerology, lost magic books and early genetic diagrams. Smith works the canvas like a physicist's blackboard where he can postulate new image formulations and equations. The paintings are characterized by slightly visible erased imagery that serves as both memory and ghost- like images reminiscent of Smith's childhood that was filled with séances and talking spirits. The result is a disorienting universe characteristic of Smith's long association with both pop culture and metaphysical practices. “I think of the paintings really as drawings, as if the canvas were just a large sheet of paper. This allows me to work freely and automatically as if in some sort of trance state. The result is somewhat similar to the intent of Jain paintings from India or Tibetan thangkas, which serve to open a door to another realm. This often results in a curious sensation of time travel for the viewer.” Smith's work has been included in both the Whitney and Beijing Biennials and is in the permanent collection of the Whitney, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas Museum of Art, Miami Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Art, among others. Smith's unusual life story has been captured in his memoir, WALKING THROUGH WALLS, published by Simon and Schuster. It is the true story of growing up with a father who discovers that he has supernatural powers and can talk to the dead and heal the sick. SHOWTIME has acquired the book for a weekly television series, now in development.

James Naughtie is joined by John Berendt to talk about his book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The story tells of what John Berendt experienced in Savannah, Georgia, in the early 1990s when the town was turned upside-down by a strange murder.
