This week Mike has all-timer David Sedaris back on the podcast. Sedaris, of course, wrote Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and Holidays on Ice, among other classics. The two discuss where the truth lies in autobiographical non-fiction, fact-checking comedy at The New Yorker, and how to navigate storytelling when it's all too personal. Plus, David plays F**k, Marry, Kill, with his own published works and Mike can't accept the answer. Please consider giving money to a stranger in need.

The news lately has not exactly been a walk in the park. Iran launched hundreds of rockets at Israel, creating the prospect of World War III; we have Trump's ongoing criminal trial; a TikTok ban; a war in Ukraine; and much of the Ivy League is now co-opted by Hamas. Should we go on? Today's episode isn't about any of that. Because sometimes we just need a breath of fresh air. Cue the one and only David Sedaris—America's favorite humorist, or at the very least, our favorite humorist. You might know David from one of his bestselling books like Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and Calypso. His words are frequently in The New Yorker, and he's also just come out with a children's book called Pretty Ugly, which he says has “no message.”  David was on Honestly a few years ago—if you haven't heard that interview, please check it out; it's a highlight of this show—and he's here again today to read an essay he wrote for The Free Press, where he imparts his thoughts on the underappreciated joys of small talk. It's Thanksgiving week, which for many of us means eating too much turkey and pumpkin pie. For others, it means getting into arguments with your Gen Z cousin who, in a fit of righteous rage, calls you a settler colonialist and storms out of the dining room.  Whatever your holiday may bring, we here at Honestly wanted to bring you a drop of delight from none other than the most delightful man on planet Earth: David Sedaris.  Sedaris is a humorist and author of many best-selling books: Calypso, Theft by Finding, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, Holidays on Ice, Barrel Fever. . . and most recently, Happy-Go-Lucky, which I had the privilege of talking to him about last December. It's probably my favorite episode of all time. What makes David's writing so unforgettable is his ability to find something meaningful and true in the utterly mundane; the way he finds humor in the most horrific moments in life; and his commitment to the lost art of making fun of ourselves.  So for today's episode, we are thrilled to have David here to read an essay he calls “Punching Down.” It is funny, it is frank, and fair warning, if you are a parent of small children, it might also be a little bit offensive. Happy Thanksgiving. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to the first episode in our Design Better series on the creative process. In this series, we're going beyond the confines of design to speak with some of the most creative people in the world, to learn how they approach collaboration, come up with innovative ideas, and overcome creative obstacles. We'll speak with guests like Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar; Autumn Durald Arkapaw, cinematographer for Loki and Wakanda Forever, and OK Go, one of the most creative bands in the world right now. Before we get there though, we have a very special guest for you. You may have first heard of David Sedaris from his annual reading of The Santaland Diaries on National Public Radio in the U.S., a story that chronicles his misadventures as Crumpet the holiday elf, and has been a holiday tradition for over 30 years. Or, if you're like us, you may have gotten to know him from some of his early books like Naked. And if you don't know David Sedaris, you're in for a real treat. We chat with David about his acute powers of observation, how he prototypes his essays in front of live audiences, and whether fear exists in his creative process. One quick announcement before we get started. We're continuing to explore new ways to help you learn, grow your career, hone your craft, and get inspired here at Design Better. As part of that, we'd like to invite you to 3 free AMAs (“Ask Me Anything”) with some amazing experts:  First, on September 21st, Dan Mall, founder of Design System University, who's helped companies ranging from Eventbrite, to Nike, to United Airlines, develop and deploy sustainable design systems will share what he's learned to help designers get the respect they deserve while scaling digital products sustainable. Next, on September 28th, Judy Wert, co-founder of Wert & Co, who has been guiding the careers of top designers through ups and downs in the job market, will join us for an open discussion where you can ask questions, get career guidance, and gain perspective on the challenging design and tech job landscape. Finally, on October 4th, Debbie Millman, host of Design Matters —the first podcast about design, and one of the longest running shows in the world—will be with us and you'll have a chance to ask one of the best interviewers in the world what inspires her and what she's learned about creativity over the course of her career. For more details and to sign up for free to each AMA, go to dbtr.co/AMA2023. Bio David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and his most recent book, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, each of which became an immediate bestseller. Bright Minds: from the John Adams Institute

On September 23, 2008, The John Adams Institute hosted an evening with David Sedaris. The humorist and author of 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' and 'Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim' brought his entourage to Amsterdam for the Dutch publication of his latest collection of wisdom, 'When You Are Engulfed in Flames'. Sedaris instructed the John Adams audience on how to buy drugs in a North Carolina trailer and how to pretend you attended Princeton University before the birth of Jesus Christ. Sedaris, the best selling author of all time, was soon after accused by The New Republic magazine of making up some of his autobiographical reminiscences.Support the show

Honestly, I really expected to call this episode “Covid Sedaris” because David Sedaris had just tested positive for COVID when we taped the interview. But when we spoke, he wasn't feeling it much at all. Had some symptoms that might have been allergies or COVID but were barely noticeable. Other people have it a lot worse, he says.David has been delighting audiences for 30 years now, ever since the broadcast of Santaland Diaries. His latest book, Happy-Go-Lucky, is deceptively titled, containing a lot of stories and memories that are pretty painful. David's father died last year at age 98 and liberated David to share some things he hasn't shared so openly before. He talks about how his father ridiculed him, belittled him, and just flat out didn't like him. He shares the story of being invited to give the commencement address at Princeton and bringing along his dad, who told the university president that they should have booked his sister Amy Sedaris instead.David also shares stories of his sister Tiffany, who died by suicide in 2013. He's caught heat over the years for writing and talking about how difficult it was for him to deal with her when she was at her most unstable. He also talks about the charges of abuse Tiffany made against David and their father before he died. There are still plenty of laughs in the interview because, come on, it's David Sedaris, but there's also pain and melancholy that you might not have heard from him before.Get your copy of David Sedaris' Happy-Go-Lucky wherever books are sold.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. David Sedaris is a humorist and author of many best selling books: Calypso, Theft By Finding, Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, Holidays On Ice, Barrel Fever… just to name a few. He's also one of my favorite writers of all time.  What makes Sedaris – who got his start on NPR back in 1992 with his, now famous, Santaland Diaries essay about the time he worked as a Christmas Elf at Macy's – so mesmerizing and funny, is his ability to find something meaningful and true in the utterly mundane, the way he finds humor in the most horrific moments in life, and his commitment to the lost art of making fun of ourselves.  Nowhere is that more clear than in his newest book, Happy-Go-Lucky. Like most of his writing, it's a book about his beloved and crazy family. But it's also a book about some of the most contentious societal issues of the last few years. For the writer who so many think of as a public radio darling, the pages of Sedaris' new book are not like what you find on today's member stations. He writes about observing Black Lives Matter protests and COVID lockdowns with such candor – and without agenda or moral ideology – which results in something not only hilarious and relatable, as usual, but also extraordinarily refreshing.  So for today, if you find yourself tuning in from an overcrowded plane, a car full of bickering cousins, or maybe you miraculously get a quiet moment to yourself on a long and snowy walk, this is the perfect episode for you… and, hopefully, the perfect holiday escape. Ælfric's Colloquy is a dialogue between a teacher and his students, written both in Old English and Latin, designed to teach Latin to Anglo-Saxon schoolboys. It is also the earliest record of a (relatively) realistic English-language conversation. In celebration of the Ancient Language Institute's new Old English program, Dr. Colin Gorrie joins Jonathan and Ryan to walk through the Colloquy and to talk about language learning, education, and literacy in medieval England.Ælfric's Colloquy (Old English): https://www.kul.pl/files/165/history%20of%20english/texts2009/aelfriccolloquy-translation.pdfColloquium Ælfrici (Latine): https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/12358426/colloquium-aelfrici-1-nos-pueri-rogamus-te-magister-ut-doceas-nos-Ælfric's Colloquy (modern English translation): https://www.kentarchaeology.ac/authors/016.pdfDavid Sedaris's "Me Talk Pretty One Day": https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/a1419/talk-pretty-0399/Eleanor Dickey's Learn Latin from the Romans: https://bookshop.org/a/25626/9781316506196C. What with the whole world grinding to a viral halt and everything, this special series of essays and diary entries is recorded at the Sussex home of the world-renowned storyteller. In 2021, it's 25 years since David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view with the listeners to BBC Radio 4, having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996. In this eighth series of Meet David Sedaris, he continues to entertain with sardonic wit and incisive social critiques. David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he's a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries, was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings. David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest international best-selling books include a collection of stories entitled Calypso, an edited selection of diary entries Theft By Finding, and a 'greatest hits' selection called The Best Of Me. When she was very young, she read the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, including Chicken Soup for the Teenaged Soul Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and Gulp: Adventures Down the Elementary Canal, both by Mary Roach, whom Amanda admires greatly Joan Didion (author of The Year of Magical Thinking and Slouching Toward Bethlehem: Essays) and Nora Ephron (author of Heartburn and I Feel Bad About My Neck, and writer and director of Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail) She took a few classes at Writing Pad in Los Angeles to keep up her nonfiction writing chops Amanda desperately wanted to be published in The Rumpus, like one of her role models, Julie Buntin, who wrote Marlena: A Novel. Julie also wrote “How Queen Became the Ultimate Compliment” for Cosmopolitan. And she was! Read her article, “Baltimore, Offline.” With Rebecca Odes, creator of Wifey.tv with co-founder Jill Soloway, Amanda developed the web series The Dirty Word Amanda was edited by Karen Rinaldi, publisher of HarperWave, an imprint of HarperCollins Rose Wong illustrated pieces of art for the book The New York Times wrote a glowing review of Wordslut, though it did take issue with the number of times Amanda used the word “dude” There are lots of stories of men super geniuses --  like House, Psych, The Mentalist, Mr. Robot. But Amanda is writing a female language genius for FX, with whom she struck a deal for the TV rights to Wordslut. Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds for Episode 11, in which we take a fun little trip down our “book-memory lanes”. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: A sweet book gift from a friend, and a childhood milestone finally broached. Then we dive into our currently reading lists with three (or more) books from each of us, lots of mysterious picks this week, and one title that we just can’t stop talking about. Next, we take that memory trip and talk about the books that formed us as readers. The memories we have of our childhood reading, the ones that shaped us as teens, and how they turned us into the readers we are today. So many backlist gems in this list! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands. This week’s picks include a YA pick that’s being made into a Netflix movie and a non-fiction classic that is perfect for everyone on your Christmas list. David Sedaris has a national following based first on his contributions to the NPR radio show “This American Life,” and later with essays collected in such books as “Barrel Fever,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day” and “Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls.” His latest collection, “Calypso,” follows on the heels of the publication of his diaries from 1977 to 2002, and while often comedic, also deals with darker issues such as the death of his sister Tiffany, and politics in America today. In this wide ranging discussion recorded in late June, 2018, he talks about gay parades, his father's obsession with Trump, his own obsession with garbage collection and fitbit steps, and how he creates and molds his essays.   The post David Sedaris appeared first on KPFA.

My first request is for book recommendations for the two girls who I will be taking care of. I would like to bring them something when I arrive (a shameless bribe) and books are easy to transport. The older one is 10 and is an avid reader and has read the first Harry Potter book in English. She had some struggles, but reads about the same as an American 10 year old. I'd love to get her a chapter book so I can help out with her reading and so she can feel super accomplished. She's a huge Harry Potter fan and also likes graphic novels. The younger girl is almost 9 and reads more like a first grader. She is not a reader but will sometimes pick up graphic novels. I'd love to find something cool to strike up her interest in learning English since according to her mother and previous au pairs, she understands spoken English, but has a tough time reading and speaking it. She is much more active and likes sports and board games. My second request should be easy. I'd love some books to get me psyched up for the big move. Ideally, a fish out of water story set in Paris, either fiction or non fiction is fine. I loved Paris for One and Bringing Up Bebe and Me Talk Pretty One Day. I found Paris to the Moon a little tedious and My Life in France is already on my list. My favorite books are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Station Eleven and The Bone Clocks. Thanks! --Jennie   2. Hi Jenn and Amanda! Love this show so much, my TBR grows exponentially after each episode. I'm looking for some book recommendations for my younger sister, who is a bit of a reluctant reader but would like to read more because when she finds a book she she genuinely loves, she can't put it down or stop talking about it and I want to help nurture her inner book nerd. She likes historical fiction, and in particular books that follow a woman's life over a long period of time. She prefers books set far in the past, like 300 years plus to ancient history, and has expressed that she would like books that deal less with "mainstream western history." Two books she has really loved are The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, and we both loved chatting about these books together. I'd love to pass along some more similar suggestions to her so we can do sister read-a-longs and book chats. Thanks so very much! --Kate   3. Hello Get Booked, I've just finished the latest entry in Kristin Britain's Green Rider series and now have 3-4 long years to wait for the next one. I'm wondering if you can recommend me some 'woman goes on a quest/journey through a fantasy land' books to make the wait easier. (While I don't mind a bit of pain and suffering on the way, I'm not a fan of relentlessy grim stories.) I've already read everything by: Robin McKinley Tamora Pierce Tanya Huff Thanks in advance. --Marie   4. Hey ladies! I'm looking for fiction (or even nonfiction) recommendations for books involving scientists and adventure. I've read The Signature of All Things, and The Lost City of Z, I really enjoyed both of those. I have also read The Unseen World, books similar to that are also welcome. I love science and history so anything historical is also a bonus. Thanks so much, I love the podcast! --Kristy   5. My older brother is an enthusiastic reader and I read all the time. He still lives in our hometown in rural Wisconsin and I live in Boston. We've recently started building an adult relationship by talking about books. I want to introduce him to more diverse books. My brother's favorite books are To Kill a Mockingbird and Lonesome Dove, we read The Winter of Our Discontent together and he loved it. He takes his time reading, so it has to be something that will keep him interested over time. I want to expose him to more women/poc authors without alienating him. --Sarah   6. Hello Amanda and Jenn, I have always really enjoyed reading aloud (that is, as an adult reading aloud to other adults). With my parents, I have read the entire Harry Potter series and many Jasper Fforde books and found them especially enjoyable to share because of the cleverness and humor. However, I am now in a relationship with a man who not really a book person (and, yes, it took a lot for me to trust a man with no bookshelves in his home). He has indulged my interest in reading to him, but we have not found many books that appeal to him. We enjoyed The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd (one of my absolute favorites since I attended art school) and Daisy Fay and The Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg. I wanted to revisit Jasper Fforde with him but he is vehemently opposed to all things fantasy/sci fi (even magical realism). Any suggestions for books that would have that kind of smart Jasper Fforde humor but be more grounded in the real world? I actually submitted this request close to a year ago and (unless I missed it somehow), it has not appeared on the show. In that time, the relationship I mentioned has turned into an engagement. So, as I look forward to spending the rest of my life with this non-reader, I would really appreciate some brilliant inspirations for read-alouds that will help me share my love of books with him. Thanks, --Sasha   7. Hello Amanda and Jenn! I recently read Malinche by Laura Esquivel and, while I wasn't actually a big fan of it (her writing style just didn't do it for me), it left me hungry for more historical fiction that takes place in Mexico and Central America. I would love books that are Pre-Columbian, preferably written by people who are Latinx, and where the place/culture is a character. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! --Heidi   8. I recently finished an advanced degree and am starting my own business. Thanks to some major hits to my self-confidence and some pretty significant imposter syndrome, I'm finding myself hesitant to move forward. I need to feel inspired and need a major confidence boost--but I can't stand self-help books or anything that sounds like a self-help book. They make me roll my eyes and sometimes get thrown in disgust. I need to be inspired, not just told I should be inspired or fed a bunch of woo-woo bs. I hated Eat, Pray, Love with a passion hotter than a thousand suns, if that helps (and side note: I'm always glad to find those who felt the same way since at the time everyone else loved it). I'm open to fiction or non-fiction. Please help me find something to distract me from wondering who in the hell actually gave me me a law degree & licence and that will make me feel worthy. Thanks! (As another side note, I'm also a former bookseller who desperately misses being in the know, so I'm loving all of the Book Riot's podcasts!) --NoName Because of Reasons     Books Discussed Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson Dud Avocado by Helen Dundy See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt Mountain of Light by Indu Sundaresan Tombs of Atuan by Ursula LeGuin Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne A Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn Four Souls by Louise Erdrich Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue David Sedaris, literally anything, who cares (Me Talk Pretty One Day) Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome Funny books flow chart from Slate Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende, translated by Margaret Sayers Peden Servant of the Underworld (Obsidian & Blood series #1) by Aliette de Bodard (writing outside her own culture) Girl Up by Laura Bates Grit by Angela Duckworth

This week on StoryWeb: David Sedaris’s essay “The Santaland Diaries.” For Julia and Jim, my favorite David Sedaris fans My sister, Julia, is one of David Sedaris’s biggest fans. She and my husband, Jim, love giggling together over favorite passages from Sedaris’s droll radio essays. While Sedaris is an accomplished writer, it is in his oral delivery of his essays – his readings – that he really makes his mark. Sure, you can recite a favorite line or try to imitate him doing “Away in a Manager” as Billie Holiday, but really, why try? Only David Sedaris can really do David Sedaris. Sedaris’s breakout came when he recorded “The Santaland Diaries” for NPR’s Morning Edition in December 1992, his debut for national public radio. When the essay was broadcast, more people requested a tape of it than any Morning Edition story up to that time (except for the death of beloved NPR commentator Red Barber.)  Small in stature, Sedaris recalls landing a gig (if you can call it that) as Crumpet the Elf in Macy’s Santaland. He played Crumpet for two seasons at the Macy’s store in New York’s Herald Square. If you are familiar with Sedaris’s work, you know that this bizarre set-up – small gay man meets American capitalist Christmas extravaganza – is the perfect vehicle for Sedaris’s storytelling. How did Sedaris make it to the big time? Radio host Ira Glass discovered him in a Chicago club where Sedaris was reading from his diary. Glass invited Sedaris to appear on his weekly local program, The Wild Room. “I owe everything to Ira,” says Sedaris. “My life just changed completely, like someone waved a magic wand.” Since his big break on NPR, Sedaris has been a frequent contributor to Glass’s nationally distributed public radio program, This American Life. Are Sedaris’s essays true? Alexander S. Heard – in an article for The New Republic – went to the trouble of fact-checking some of the essays and found holes (sometimes gaping holes) in Sedaris’s tales. He did work at Macy’s Santaland, and Bob Rutan, a Macy’s executive, recalls him as “an outstanding elf.” But given the controversy surrounding the factuality of the essays, NPR now clearly labels “The Santaland Diaries” – a perennial holiday favorite – as fiction. And Sedaris himself in a note in his 2009 book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, acknowledged that his tales are “realish.” (For more on the controversy over the “truth” behind Sedaris’s essays, check out an article in the Washington Post.) Ready to explore more of Sedaris’s work? Check out his 1994 collection, Barrel Fever, or his 1997 collection, Holidays on Ice, both of which include “The Santaland Diaries.” Other volumes include: Naked (1998), Me Talk Pretty One Day (2001), Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (2005), and Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls (2014). These books are also available as audio recordings – and if you want the full David Sedaris experience, I recommend investing in The Ultimate David Sedaris Box Set. To learn more, visit Sedaris’s official website – and if you want to stay up to date on all things David Sedaris, you can follow him on Facebook or sign up for his newsletter. You can also listen to and read excerpts from a 2013 Terry Gross interview with Sedaris on Fresh Air. David Sedaris (born December 26, 1956) is a Grammy Award-nominated American humorist, writer, comedian, bestselling author, and radio contributor. Sedaris was first publicly recognized in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay “SantaLand Diaries”. He published his first collection of essays and short stories, Barrel Fever, in 1994. His next five subsequent essay collections, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997), Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000), Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (2004), and When You Are Engulfed in Flames (2008), have become New York Times Best Sellers. In 2010, he released another collection of stories Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary. As of 2008, his books have collectively sold seven million copies. Much of Sedaris’s humor is autobiographical and self-deprecating, and often concerns his family life, his middle class upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, Greek heritage, various jobs, education, drug use, homosexuality, and his life in France with his boyfriend, Hugh Hamrick.
