"The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was a wake-up call. It showed me that even the best science fails without effective communication and proactive strategies to save lives." In this episode, host Andrew Geary talks with Ron Harris, Geological Sciences Professor at Brigham Young University, about his groundbreaking work in disaster preparedness. Ron shares insights from his lecture and nonprofit, In Harm's Way, focusing on how scientific research can save lives in disaster-prone regions. KEY POINTS & TAKEAWAYS > Proactive Disaster Preparedness: Ron champions moving beyond reactive approaches, using community-based education to prepare for potential hazards before they occur. > The "20-20-20" Evacuation Principle: This innovative rule helps communities quickly self-evacuate after earthquakes. By combining scientific data with simple messaging, Ron created a lifesaving tool anyone can understand and implement. > Science Meets Community Action: Through his WAVES team, Geoscientists without Borders, and In Harm's Way, Ron proves that bridging scientific insights with local leadership can dramatically reduce disaster risks. > Cultural Engagement: Ron has found powerful ways to boost community preparedness by collaborating with Indonesian scouting groups and integrating local heroes into disaster messaging. > A Challenge to Future Geoscientists: Ron encourages young researchers to align their skills with societal needs, demonstrating how scientific expertise can create real-world impact. Doug Stanton wrote the #1 New York Times bestselling In Harm's Way and Horse Soldiers. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer turned Horse Soldiers into 12 Strong, starring Chris Hemsworth. Stanton is interested in “dramatic situations when people are forced to make a right decision at the most difficult moment.”Here we discuss In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Store of its Survivors, and the lessons it teaches on leadership, responsibility, and accountability to each other, after the absolute worst happens. In July of 1945, after the Indianapolis delivered the atomic bomb to Tinian Island so the Enola Gay could drop it on Hiroshima, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese, sending 900 sailors into the shark-infested seas. Due to several catastrophic mistakes by Navy command, no one came to the rescue for days after, leaving 600 men to drown or be eaten by sharks. (This is the scene in JAWS that Quint describes while drinking with his crewmates.)To Captain McVay III's great credit, he kept the men together and spirits up during four inhumanly hard days – a sterling example of leadership under tremendous pressure, by McVay and the men themselves -- until finally a U.S. plane discovered them by accident, saving 300 souls. Nonetheless, McVay became the first U.S. Navy captain to be court-martialed, despite testimony from his crew to the Japanese captain who torpedoed his ship. It was a grossly unfair outcome, but Captain McVay never blamed anyone else – though he surely could have. The survivors kept reuniting for years afterward, and through their efforts, McVay's name was finally cleared in 2000 – 32 years after his death by suicide.Stanton tells the story masterfully, and the leadership lessons it has to teach.Connect with Doug and get his books:http://dougstanton.com/ For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

FAST stands for Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television. And there are a lot of ways to get it. This week Ara decided to download Pluto.TV and check it out for himself. The first thing you notice is that the interface is similar to any of the other IPTV services. Pluto's channels are grouped by category. Food, Sports, Music, Entertainment, and the list goes on. They even have an on demand section that is a mixture of classics like In Harm's Way with John Wayne to more modern fare like 13 hours. They have game shows, home improvement, cooking, sports and the list goes on. There is no shortage of content. There are plenty of news channels but not all localities are covered. For instance, Los Angeles has one local news station. And there are no live sports that we could find. Regardless, you can't beat the price of free! It will contain content from the NHL's past games, playoffs, and all star games. Pluto, like other FAST services, are supported on just about every platform from phones to tablets and set top boxes and many TVs. We can't see any downside because the price is perfect! Free. Download all the services and you will always find something to watch.

Donald J Trump going to prison would be so sad love! Donald Trump did an Insurrection and hasn't gone to jail for it. He also kidnapped 2200 children and didn't go to jail for that, what was he going to do sell them to Jeffrey Epstein. How many crimes must Trump do to go to jail? Donald J Trump's took secret documents from our government and it's still walking around free. None of the documents Trump took were his, they belong to the United States, not Donald J Trump that thinks he's a king dictator. How many of our allies did he put In Harm's Way? On this week's episode of Coffee with Closers, we talk with Doug Stanton, a #1 New York Times best-selling author. In a new edition of his book, In Harm's Way, he reveals a previously unreported discovery of 28 Black sailors aboard the USS Indianapolis, which sank in 1945. It remains the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. naval history, and Stanton continues to question the Navy's conclusion that no SOS was ever sent from the ship. He also discusses an update to Horse Soldiers, a gripping account of the heroism of the first band of Special Forces soldiers who rode to victory on horseback in Afghanistan following 9/11. It was the basis for the Jerry Bruckheimer movie 12 Strong, starring Chris Hemsworth.

Preston and Sayre are joined today with Doug Stanton. Doug is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, lecturer, screenwriter. His books include The Odyssey of Echo Company, In Harm's Way, and Horse Soldiers. The Odyssey of Echo Company entails the story of a 101st Airborne Division recon platoon who found themselves thrust into savage combat during the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive. In Harm's Way is the definitive account of the sinking, rescue, and valor of the USS Indianapolis crew during the end of the Second World War, and became required reading on the U.S. Navy's reading list for officers. Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Green Berets who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. It is required reading by US Army Special Forces at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and is the inspiration behind the movie 12 Strong. Doug's books were all obtained from first-hand accounts and by personally observing the battlefields. We discuss many of the personal stories, themes, and history he's preserved through his writings. In Harm's Way is being re-released over 20 years later on May 17, 2022, including a new chapter of stories untold. We hope you enjoy.
“My deep exploration of forgiveness began in a prison centre with me on one side of the glass and my husband at the time, Jason, on the other.”After the traumatizing public experience of her first husband's conviction as a sex offender, Shannon thought she'd never feel joy or be whole again. In the years that followed, she learned that forgiveness isn't always a one-time event—it is also an on-going process. Today, 16 years after her life completely shattered, Shannon now works as a registered social worker, therapist, and advocate to support clients in achieving post-traumatic growth. Currently, she helps provide life-saving trauma therapy to dozens of survivors of accused serial rapist and sex trafficker, Peter Nygard. Development Group Five was founded by Glen Burton to use military approaches, themes and training techniques to help empower people to be the best that they can be. Following ten years with the British Army, Burton began a career in executive close protection and has built a reputation as one of the most highly sought after consultants in the industry. His client list includes well-known names within the entertainment and business world as well as international royalty. He has led and managed protective operations in over 120 countries. Perhaps his most infamous moment came when he transported a young African boy adopted by Madonna back to London. The tabloids claimed he had “kidnapped” the child. The inspiration for Development Group Five first came in 2011 when Glen was hired to accompany the son of a high net worth family who was about to take a several month long adventure-training trip in South America. The young man had lost his father the previous year and Glen developed a natural mentorship relationship with him. The Development Group Five curriculum and training is built upon five pillars; Performance, Motivation, Mindset, Vision and Execution. Team members include coaches and business leaders in addition to individuals with a military background. In addition to personal development coaching for individuals and workshop type sessions, Dev Group Five also offers a course called “Mission Control” where teams are tested in high pressure, “real world” scenarios. We first had Glen on American Warrior Radio to discuss his book “In Harm's Way”. He has now released a second book titled “The Fortitude Warrior”. He says fortitude is a trait he found common among both the military and business leaders with whom he interacted over his career. We spend much of the program talking about the concepts and inspiration put forward in the book. TAKEAWAY: “You've got to want to be better than you are. If you are not doing something you love, then why are you doing it at all?”

After a brief stint as Director of the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Kyle joined the faculty in the History Department at Chapman University in 2020, where he runs the War & Society MA program. He speaks worldwide, including at Bill's mother's retirement community - Longhorn Village - in Austin (his mother loves Kyle!). And a PS for this episode - we experienced some audio difficulties that we mostly but not completely fixed, being the amateurs that we are. Also, Dr. Longley's computer notifications "beeped" several times, attesting to his popularity. And we also corrected Dr. Longley after recording as to the correct pronunciation of Lima, Ohio! Remember, he's a Latin Americanist at heart. He's such a great guy! We're excited to talk with him - so join us with Kyle Longley on Military Historians are People, Too! Rec. 11/16/2021

Today we speak with Javier Auyero, Professor of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, about his 25 years of experience studying marginalized communities in Buenos Aires ethnographically. Javier tells us how he first came to sociology, and the intellectual curiosities and political interests that drove him to many of his projects. He also describes the very different ways he’s gone about ethnographic research: from the more classic model of solo ethnographer going into the field every day, to his collaboration with local “native” ethnographers, to working with paid research assistants. We then learn how Javier teaches ethnography by applying the same set of questions to a number of exemplary works, before ending by discussing what novels can add to ethnographic research—both to improve writing and convey emotion and experience. For more information about Ethnographic Marginalia, please click here. Javier Auyero is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Professor in Latin American Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and Interim Director at LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections. His main areas of research, writing, and teaching are urban marginality, political ethnography, and collective violence. Auyero is author or co-author of numerous award-winning books, including Poor People’s Politics: Peronist Survival Networks and the Legacy of Evita(2000), Contentious Lives: Two Argentine Women, Two Protests, and the Quest for Recognition (2003), Routine Politics and Violence in Argentina(2007), Patients of the State: The Politics of Waiting in Argentina (2012), Flammable: Environmental Suffering in an Argentine Shantytown (2009, with Débora Swistun), In Harm’s Way: The Dynamics of Urban Violence (2015, with María Fernanda Berti), and The Ambivalent State: Police-Criminal Collusion at the Urban Margins (2019, with Katherine Sobering). December 4, 2017 - This week, our time machine travels back 50 years to one of the Vietnam War's massive set pieces: The Tet Offensive. This series of simultaneous attacks by the communist North on 36 cities, aimed to weaken support both within the Vietnamese republic in the South and across the Pacific in the United States. Our guest, Doug Stanton, embeds his readers with 46 fresh, young American soldiers in Echo Company: An Army reconnaissance platoon of the 101st Airborne Division. Some of those men had only been in country for a few weeks when they found themselves facing waves of battle-hardened Viet Cong guerrillas, often in hand-to-hand combat, at the point of a bayonet. Doug Stanton captures their story through the eyes of 20-year-old Stanley Parker in The Odyssey of Echo Company: The 1968 Tet Offensive and the Epic Battle to Survive the Vietnam War. Mr. Stanton is a journalist, lecturer, screenwriter, and the author of New York Times bestsellers In Harm’s Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors. He also brought us Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan, which is the basis for a Jerry Bruckheimer film coming in 2018. Doug Stanton's work has appeared in a wide number of top publications, and he's been a contributing editor at Outside. He's also a founder of the National Writers Series. For more, visit DougStanton.com or follow him on Twitter @DougStantonBook. Also mentioned in this episode is author/illustrator Marcelino Truong's graphic memoir on growing up in the ultimately doomed Republic of Vietnam: Such a Lovely Little War: Saigon 1961-63.
Doug Stanton is a journalist, lecturer, screenwriter, and author of the New York Times bestsellers In Harm’s Way and Horse Soldiers. Horse Soldiers is the basis for a Jerry Bruckheimer-produced movie by the same name, starring Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon, to be released by Warner Bros. in 2018. In Harm’s Way, the definitive account of the sinking, rescue, and valor of the USS Indianapolis crew, spent more than six months on the New York Times bestseller list and became required reading on the U.S. Navy's reading list for officers. The unabridged audiobook edition of In Harm’s Way is the winner of the 2017 Audie Award in the History category. His new book, The Odyssey of Echo Company, tells the story of the 1968 Tet Offensive and the soldiers who fought in those battles. He speaks with us today about his career and the stories he’s struggled to tell. This week’s episode was sponsored by Care/of. Benders and non-benders rejoice, The Avatar Returns is back like Varrick! We've been lost in the Spirit Wilds for longer than any of us care to think about, but we fought our way out, through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, to be here with you tonight as we continue at last our exploration of Nickelodeon's award-winning Prison Break reboot, also known as The Legend of Korra, Book Three. Picking up right where we left off nearly four months(?!) ago we discuss chapter 304, “In Harm's Way,” which sees our heroes casually violating the sovereignty of a foreign nation to free some new airbenders. Then we get serious with chapters 305, “The Metal Clan” and 306, “Old Wounds,” which takes us to a brand new location, the shining city on the hill (actually it's in a valley) Zaofu, home of, you guessed it, the Metal Clan. Also home to Lin Beifong's estranged half-sister Suyin. The family drama gets thick. Thrill to the adventures of Zaofu's own action acupuncturist! Cheer as the Earth Queen sneezes till her internal organs fall out! Ponder the intricacies of inflection! (Is it combustion lady POWERS or combustion LADY powers?) Next: our long hiatus left us weak and out of shape, and all this heavy podcasting has really taken it out of us. So we're taking another (much MUCH shorter) break before returning in two weeks for chapters 307, “Original Airbenders,” 308, “The Terror Within,” and 309, “The Stakeout.” The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 15:05) Main Topic (15:05 - 1:33:00) Outro / Next (1:33:00 - 1:37:04)
All great journeys have their obstacles, detours or delays. For Avatar: The Last Airbender it was a literal hole in the ground known as "The Great Divide." For The Legend of Korra, let's be honest, it was an entire character named Unalaq. And for The Avatar Returns it's that old hobgoblin known as the real world. Circumstances outside of our control have left us with no choice but to take a temporary break in our recording schedule. This one will be a bit longer than our previous little hiccups, as we won't be returning till mid-January 2017 (!!!), but I want to emphasize the words 'temporary' and 'returning' because we will most definitely be back. You have our word, once we clear these spirit vines out of the way and kick this so-called real world's butt into submission, The Avatar Returns will return! We apologize for the timing and hope that all our fans will stick with us through these dark, podcastless days. Trust us, we're pumped to get back into production in the new year. The best of The Legend of Korra is still to come. (The Avatar Returns is scheduled to resume with Episode 37 - In Harm's Way / The Metal Clan / Old Wounds on or around January 18, 2017.)
Change is in the air as The Avatar Returns returns from our month-long walkabout with discussion of the first three chapters in The Legend of Korra Book Three. Gone are the days of meandering plot threads and questionable kaiju choices. We're right back into genuine character building, socio-philosophical quandaries, and thrilling Studio Mir action sequences. In chapter 301, “A Breath of Fresh Air,” Korra and Team Avatar are still trying to pick up the pieces after the paradigm shift of Harmonic Convergence, but they've got more on their plates than just some pesky spirit vines as new airbenders begin popping up for the first time in nearly two centuries. And we get a new villain that is already a thousand times more interesting than Unalaq in just his first few minutes of screen time. Chapter 302, “Rebirth” sees our intrepid heroes set out on a journey to gather up new airbenders in an effort to rebuild the nearly extinct Air Nation, but all they end up with is an annoying kid. Oh, and Zuko's back! And finally chapter 303 introduces us to “The Earth Queen,” the lovely, mild-mannered successor to old King What's-his-name-with-the-bear. She hates animals and is building a secret airbender army for the Earth Kingdom, so you know…she's lovely. Henry Rollins is perfectly voice-cast, but it may take some time for us to accept that. The Dai Li return, so Eric's excited. And Arlo hates Napoleon Dynamite. Next: three more tales to thrill! Chapters 304-306, “In Harm's Way,” “The Metal Clan,” and “Old Wounds.” The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 20:20) Main Topic (20:20 - 1:44:50) Outro / Next (1:44:50 - 1:47:28)

Ted Schettler The Ecology of Breast Cancer Breast-cancer is not one disease, but many. The causes are many as well. Join TNS host Michael Lerner in conversation with Ted Schettler—a leader in the development of the “ecological paradigm of health.” His new book The Ecology of Breast Cancer offers a fresh perspective integrating stress, diet, exercise, toxic chemical exposures, EMFs, and more. Ted Schettler, M.D., M.P.H. Ted is an authority on environmental links to reproductive and developmental disorders, neurotoxicity, and other public health problems. He is the science director of the Science and Environmental Health Network, and science advisor to Health Care Without Harm, an international campaign in support of environmentally responsible health care. His books Generations at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment (MIT Press, 1999) and In Harm’s Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development (Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility, 2000) describe what scientists know and suspect about environmental causes for a host of disorders from learning disabilities to cancer. They also describe the great uncertainties and the limits of science in establishing links between cause and effect. Find out more about The New School at tns.commonweal.org.
Ted Shettler, MD, and Sharyle Patton The Ecological Paradigm of Health Ted Schettler, M.D., is unquestionably one of the most eminent science educators in the field of environmental health and justice. Dr. Schettler talked with Commonweal Biomonitoring Resource Center Director Sharyle Patton and Michael Lerner about the ecological paradigm of health, a truly “holistic” science-based way of thinking about how the environment affects our health integrating factors including socioeconomic status, nutrition, stress, chemical exposures, and much more. Most studies of these factors isolate them, but the truth is we all swim in a soup of mixtures with unknown biological consequences. Dr. Schettler is Science Director at the Science and Environmental Health Network and at the Collaborative for Health and the Environment. Ted Schettler, M.D., M.P.H. Ted Schettler, MD Implications of Ecological Health This conversation with host Michael Lerner and Ted Schettler explores how Ted’s exploration of the effects of chemical contaminants on environmental health have led him into a comprehensive perspective on the interaction of genes, gene expression, nutrition, stress, income disparities, chemicals, and many other factors in human health. From our podcast: But I do think if we’re able, in the far distant future, to look back on this period of time we will see that the period of time in which we’ve been living was characterized by an extraordinary and unjustified faith in the development of technologies that were not at all invented in the wisdom of the world. What I think, at least for me, has characterized the indigenous ways of knowing, thinking and behaving, is that it was born out of a real wisdom of how to be in the world. You know if we look at certain species that have been around for sixty-five million years, there’s a certain wisdom that’s imbedded in these organisms and similarly certain social ways of organizing that are based on a wiser understanding of the world, and so I think that it’s truly essential that we try to rediscover that as part of this effort toward restoration and building resilience. Ted Schettler, MD Ted is science director of the Science and Environmental Health Network. He has a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and a masters in public health from Harvard University. He is co-author of Generations at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment, which examines reproductive and developmental health effects of exposure to a variety of environmental toxicants. He is also co-author of In Harm’s Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development, which discusses the impact of environmental exposures on neurological development in children. He has published a number of articles on related topics in peer-reviewed journals and has served on advisory committees of the U.S. EPA and National Academy of Sciences.
