EPISODE 27 - “Dona Drake: What Price Fame” - 03/18/2024 Latina star DONA DRAKE, who signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1941, was many things — singer, dancer, actress, bandleader, musician — but one thing she wasn't, as it turned out, was Latin! While Paramount promoted their new discovery as a spitfire Latina born in Mexico City, Drake was, in fact, an African-American woman from Florida who pretended to be Latin, going so far as to learn Spanish fluently, in order to have a better chance at a Hollywood career. Listen to this fascinating story of one woman who went undercover just so she wouldn't have to play the maid. Jaggers is the baby of Texas Roadhouse's restaurant brands – both by age and size. The quick-service concept was created in 2014, about a year after the company's late founder Kent Taylor came up with the first Bubba's 33, and about five years after he introduced casual dining brand Aspen Creek.Aspen Creek's debut was strong, but the second and third restaurants were cannibalizing existing Texas Roadhouse locations, so the company sold it to a franchisee. That left “the mother ship” – as Taylor called Texas Roadhouse in his book “Made from Scratch: The Legendary Success Story of Texas Roadhouse” – and Bubba's 33 and Jaggers. Bubba's has since grown to about 33 locations, while Texas Roadhouse has about 615 domestic locations.

What do Subway, Chipotle and Texas Roadhouse have in common? They're all subjects of this week's episode of A Deeper Dive. I asked a pair of, uh, veteran editors to join me on the podcast to talk about a single event they covered over the past decade that was particularly memorable. Restaurant Business Editor-at-Large Peter Romeo and Executive Editor Lisa Jennings were happy to oblige. The rule: We could not talk about the pandemic, because that was too obvious. But the result was an interesting discussion on a trio of seismic events that had a major impact on the industry and particularly the aforementioned restaurant chains. We talked about Subway and the infamous Jared Fogle incident, about Chipotle's foodborne illness outbreak and the death of Texas Roadhouse founder Kent Taylor. Check it out.

Summary:When inflation goes up, and disposable incomes shrink, consumers approach their spending with increased scrutiny. Despite tighter budgets, however, people are still social and they still need to eat, and restaurants that consistently provide great value to their customers will come out on top. Today's guest is Jerry Morgan. Jerry is President and CEO of Louisville, Kentucky-based Texas Roadhouse, trading under the symbol TXRH. With 35 years of food service experience, including time at Bennigan's and Burger King, Jerry is an industry expert with a ton of institutional knowledge. He began his career with Roadhouse in 1997 as the managing partner of the first Texas Roadhouse in Texas, and worked his way up through the company ranks. In 2020 he was named President of Texas Roadhouse, and became CEO in 2021 following the untimely death of the company's founder and former CEO, Kent Taylor. In this episode, I speak with Jerry about the company values that have been instrumental to the success of the brand, how they're handling recent inflation, and the two additional restaurant concepts they'll be expanding over the next few years.Highlights: Jerry walks through the Texas Roadhouse backstory (03:03) Jerry explains how he got his start with Texas Roadhouse, and why it beat out other restaurant chains for his attention (05:29) Jerry describes the company's values, and their commitment to quality and service (06:54) Jerry unpacks the market partner structure of Texas Roadhouse (08:12) Jerry's philosophy on pricing, and how he looks at passing rising costs on to customers (09:50) How a company culture of "fun with purpose" helps Texas Roadhouse succeed (11:06) How Texas Roadhouse is approaching technology (15:14) Jerry describes the two additional restaurant concepts in the Texas Roadhouse family: Jaggers and Bubba's 33 (17:36) Jerry talks about the advantages of being a public company with increased cash generation from a stakeholder perspective (22:05) Links:ICR TwitterICR LinkedInICR WebsiteJerry Morgan LinkedInTexas Roadhouse LinkedInTexas Roadhouse WebsiteFeedback:If you have questions about the show, or have a topic in mind you'd like discussed in future episodes, email our producer, elizabeth@lowerstreet.co.

Part 2: James Gordon readies himself for another one of his daughter's heart surgeries. Dr Emily Darling is a coral reef scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto. Her research has won international awards and been featured on National Geographic, Forbes International, CNN, and PBS Nature. His girlfriend, Mary Wesley, assisted Blackie from time to time, as did his pal Shorty. Forced to defend himself against the accusations of New York Police Inspector Faraday, Blackie always managed to stay one step ahead of the cops in solving a crime. The wisecracks exchanged between Blackie and Faraday made the program an enjoyable mix of comedy and mystery. Chester Morris played the character in 15 Boston Blackie films for Columbia. When The Amos ‘N' Andy Show needed a summer replacement in 1944, Chester Morris was lured to the NBC microphone for a short-lived Boston Blackie series sponsored by Rinso. The following year, Boston Blackie was syndicated by Ziv with Dorothy Kilgallen's husband, Dick Kollmar, in the title role. This syndicated series lasted until 1950 and featured Maurice Tarplin as Inspector Faraday with Leslie Woods and Jan Miner as Mary. In 1951, the series made the leap to television starring Kent Taylor as Blackie, Lois Collier as Mary and Frank Orth as Faraday.

After coming down with a mild case of Covid-19 in November, W. Kent Taylor found himself tormented by tinnitus, a ringing in the ears. It persisted and grew so distracting that the founder and chief executive of the restaurant chain Texas Roadhouse Inc. had trouble reading or concentrating. Mr. Taylor told one friend he hadn’t been able to sleep more than two hours a night for months. In early March, he met friends at his home in Naples, Fla., and led them on a yacht cruise in the Bahamas. Some of those friends thought he was finally getting better. Then his tinnitus “came screaming back in his head” last week, said Steve Ortiz, a longtime friend and former colleague. On Thursday, March 18, Mr. Taylor died by suicide in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. He was 65 years old and had overcome early flops to build a successful chain of more than 600 casual-dining restaurants, most of which evoke traditional roadside eateries with steaks, music and free peanuts. Friends said that as far as they knew, Mr. Taylor had no history of depression. “Quite the opposite,” said Mark J. Fischer, a friend since childhood. “He was so used to being positive and feeling good.” From Mayo Clinic: Tinnitus is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears. The noise you hear when you have tinnitus isn't caused by an external sound, and other people usually can't hear it. Tinnitus is a common problem. It affects about 15% to 20% of people, and is especially common in older adults. Tinnitus is usually caused by an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or a problem with the circulatory system. For many people, tinnitus improves with treatment of the underlying cause or with other treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making tinnitus less noticeable. Symptoms Tinnitus is most often described as a ringing in the ears, even though no external sound is present. However, tinnitus can also cause other types of phantom noises in your ears, including: Buzzing Roaring Clicking Hissing Humming Most people who have tinnitus have subjective tinnitus, or tinnitus that only you can hear. The noises of tinnitus may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high squeal, and you may hear it in one or both ears. In some cases, the sound can be so loud it interferes with your ability to concentrate or hear external sound. Tinnitus may be present all the time, or it may come and go. In rare cases, tinnitus can occur as a rhythmic pulsing or whooshing sound, often in time with your heartbeat. This is called pulsatile tinnitus. If you have pulsatile tinnitus, your doctor may be able to hear your tinnitus when he or she does an examination (objective tinnitus). When to see a doctor Some people aren't very bothered by tinnitus. For other people, tinnitus disrupts their daily lives. If you have tinnitus that bothers you, see your doctor. Make an appointment to see your doctor if: You develop tinnitus after an upper respiratory infection, such as a cold, and your tinnitus doesn't improve within a week. See your doctor as soon as possible if: You have hearing loss or dizziness with the tinnitus. You are experiencing anxiety or depression as a result of your tinnitus.

Texas Roadhouse Keto Menu https://rockthatketo.com/?p=2217&preview=true (https://rockthatketo.com/texas-roadhouse-keto-menu) The Texas Roadhouse Keto Menu is quite nice. As usual, you have to be on the lookout for a few things on the menu. The chain was started in 1993, and the concept was a family restaurant, where all could not only eat well, but have a good time. Their trademark is the buckets of peanuts placed everywhere. You are encouraged to eat all you want, and also throw the shells right onto the floor if you like. It’s supposed to make you feel like you are back in an old west parlor saloon. But they don’t go so far as to have spittoons, thank goodness. For the entertainment of the diners, the waiters do perform line dances at intervals during the evenings. The founder, Kent Taylor had worked in restaurants and nightclubs. He really wanted to open his own restaurant. He had one try with a former Governor of Kentucky backing him. That first try didn’t PAN out. (you see what I did there?) Taylor had to start over, and was turned down many many times by investors. Finally he got two men to invest $100,000 each in his idea. He showed the investors his concept by drawing it on napkins. Napkin drawings are responsible for some of the great inventions and business ideas in history. Taylor idea was a hit, and now there are 563 locations in multiple countries. They do a lot of work with ‘Habitat for Humanity’ and ‘Homes for our Troops’. Now, to the Texas Roadhouse Keto Menu. They serve high quality, fresh meats. They make their own in house seasoning blends. However, their seasoning blends are all made with sugar. So all seasoning should be with individual spices like salt, pepper, oil, and garlic. Louisville-native and restaurateur Kent Taylor has a passion for the food industry and for skiing. Taylor began with a humble start as a worker at Captain’s Quarters along the Ohio River. He left this position to attend school at the University of North Carolina. His love for skiing led him to Colorado after college, where he managed nightclubs and restaurants. Taylor returned to Louisville in 1990, and within a year he received financing for his idea of a Colorado-themed bar and grill, now known as Buckhead Mountain Grill. Buckhead thrived and expanded. A few years later, Taylor sold this chain and turned his attention to his new idea of a Texas-themed steakhouse. In 1993, Texas Roadhouse was born in Indiana. Word of mouth spread, business boomed, and today there are 335 locations across 46 states. In 2009, Taylor opened Aspen Creek Restaurant in Fern Creek, featuring menu items under $10. When he’s not opening restaurants, Taylor can often be found on the ski slopes.

The Boston Blackie radio series, also starring Morris, began June 23, 1944, on NBC as a summer replacement for The Amos 'n' Andy Show. Sponsored by Rinso, the series continued until September 15 of that year. Unlike the concurrent films, Blackie had a steady romantic interest in the radio show: Lesley Woods appeared as Blackie's girlfriend Mary Wesley. Harlow Wilcox was the show's announcer. On April 11, 1945, Richard Kollmar took over the title role in a radio series syndicated by Frederic W. Ziv to Mutual and other network outlets. Over 200 episodes of this series were produced between 1944 and October 25, 1950. Other sponsors included Lifebuoy Soap, Champagne Velvet beer, and R&H beer. While investigating mysteries, Blackie invaribly encountered harebrained Police Inspector Farraday (Maurice Tarplin) and always solved the mystery to Farraday's amazement. Initially, friction surfaced in the relationship between Blackie and Farraday, but as the series continued, Farraday recognized Blackie's talents and requested assistance. Blackie dated Mary Wesley (Jan Miner), and for the first half of the series, his best pal Shorty was always on hand. The humorless Farraday was on the receiving end of Blackie's bad puns and word play. Kent Taylor starred in the half-hour TV series, The Adventures of Boston Blackie. Syndicated in 1951, it ran for 58 episodes, continuing in repeats over the following decade.THIS EPISODE:June 13, 1945. Program #10. Mutual network origination, Ziv syndication. Commercials added locally. After Janice Larson almost kills herself, Blackie threatens Oscar Wolfe. His threat is recorded on a dictating machine. When Wolfe is killed the next day, Blackie becomes a fugitive wanted for murder! Richard Kollmar, Frank Lovejoy, John Gibson (?). 26:18.
