From rock star dreams to church planter to pastoral burnout — Dustin Kleinschmidt's story is one most ministry leaders won't say out loud but desperately need to hear. After 25 years in ministry, Dustin resigned from leading a church through a moral failure crisis, expecting relief. Instead he got his first anxiety attack, a spiral into depression, and a moment on his 50th birthday when he told his wife he didn't know if he wanted to be here anymore. What came out of that wilderness was a book, a reframe, and a hard-won freedom he now helps other burned out ministry leaders find.In this episode we talk about:- The slow erosion that precedes a breakdown (it's never one moment)- Spiritual bypassing — and why the most theologically sharp leaders are often the most emotionally stuck- Attachment wounds and how your experience of your earthly father shapes how you see God- What it actually looks like to stop trying to fix yourself and just heal- The quid pro quo with God most Christians don't know they haveDustin's book The Wilderness Way: Finding Freedom in Life's Fractures is available now.Connect with Dustin at DustinKleinschmidt.comTimestamps:- 0:00 – Intro & who is Dustin Kleinschmidt- 1:35 – Growing up in a broken, abusive home- 2:44 – How a trip to Six Flags led to faith- 4:01 – Tripping into ministry (and the 4-chord worship leader)- 5:10 – Seven years chasing the music industry in LA- 6:33 – Moving to Texas, discipleship ministry, and unhealthy church leadership- 7:41 – Church planting in Murphy, COVID, and the decision to shut it down- 8:31 – Going back to lead a church wrecked by a pastor's affair- 9:50 – The elder meeting that broke him- 10:40 – Resigning and waiting for relief that never came- 11:05 – The first anxiety attack and spiral into depression- 11:41 – The suicidal thought on his 50th birthday- 12:08 – Discovering the quid pro quo he had with God- 13:18 – Life is the wilderness — the reframe that changed everything- 15:52 – The signs of erosion most leaders miss- 17:49 – When you start doing mental math before you preach- 20:18 – The $100 response to a $10 problem- 23:06 – The counselor who called time out and put him on medication- 24:17 – Healing by a thousand small band-aids- 28:29 – Learning to say what you actually feel (even when you know better)- 29:26 – God wears big boy pants — permission to bring your whole frustration- 36:04 – The thing under the thing: how Dustin coaches burned out leaders- 36:41 – What spiritual bypassing is and why it's everywhere in the Western church- 38:51 – "I believe, help my unbelief" — the gap between head and heart- 39:57 – The four areas of health Dustin works through with leaders- 41:33 – Attachment wounds and how a broken father relationship shapes your view of God- 43:10 – The Rubik's Cube on his desk and why it's never allowed to be solved- 44:26 – "By God's grace, I am what I am" — what healthy identity actually looks like- 45:38 – One small step for anyone feeling exhausted or spiritually numb- 47:03 – How to find Dustin and the book
Let me know what you think of this episode? What if the place you're trying to escape is the place God is using to form you? Pastor, author, and coach Dustin Kleinschmidt joins us to candidly unpack burnout, depression, leadership wounds, and the surprising joy that can surface when we stop treating life like a problem to solve. Dustin shares how stepping down from a crisis-ridden church didn't end his pain—it exposed his expectations and led him into a deeper, steadier trust. Drawing from the Exodus story, he lays out the Wilderness Way: rescued from slavery, promised restoration, and shaped in the in‑between where beauty and brokenness live side by side.We talk through what wilderness can look like—grief that lingers, a diagnosis that upends plans, a child in chaos, or a church split that shatters trust—and why quick fixes often keep us stuck. Dustin describes the hard won practices that helped him rebuild: counseling, confession, letting pressure out early, and inviting his wife to be an advocate in the fight against secrecy and shame. He also explains his coaching model for leaders that integrates spiritual health, emotional resilience, relational honesty, and organizational clarity, because strategy without soul burns people out and feelings without structure stall change. If your faith feels frayed, you'll find language, hope, and a path forward. Expect practical wisdom, not platitudes: how to worship honestly in pain, how to spot small daily joys without denying reality, and how to hold outcomes with open hands while trusting the God who stays. Grab Dustin's book The Wilderness Way on Amazon, explore the companion workbook, and share this episode with someone who needs permission to be honest and keep going. If this conversation helped you, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who's walking through their own wilderness. After 25 years in pastoral ministry, spanning student ministry, worship, lead pastor, and church planting , Dustin Kleinschmidt found himself stepping into what he thought would be a redemptive season, only to discover it would become the hardest of his life. In this deeply honest conversation, Dustin walks us through the perfect storm of circumstances that led to his burnout: the relentless pressures of rebuilding a fractured church in the wake of pastoral moral failure, a global pandemic, and years of accumulated exhaustion. He shares how a chance encounter at a new church brought hidden wounds to the surface, leading him to seek counselling and face the uncomfortable truth that his identity had become inextricably tangled with his vocation, and that the unspoken deal he thought he had with God had never really existed. Dustin's journey through what he calls his "wilderness season" has given shape to his new book, The Wilderness Way, and to his ongoing work as a companion for people who are spiritually exhausted, disillusioned, or quietly pretending they're fine. Drawing on the parallel of Israel's 40 years between slavery and the Promised Land, Dustin offers a compelling and compassionate reframe: the wilderness isn't something to escape, but a place where beauty and brokenness exist side by side, and where God is quietly, faithfully present. This episode is for anyone who has felt the gap between the faith they expected and the life they're actually living. In this episode, Pastor Brad interviews Pastor Dustin Kleinschmidt, author of The Wilderness Way. Dustin shares his personal journey of faith, beginning with a childhood marked by trauma and growing up without a Christian background. As a teenager, he encountered Jesus through a Christian youth group, where he found the sense of community and belonging he had been missing. During his college years, God continued to shape his life by placing mentors and people around him who discipled and encouraged him in his faith. During that time, Dustin also met his wife, and together they began building a beautiful family with their two sons. As his faith deepened, he sensed a calling into full-time ministry. Years later, after a particularly stressful season of leadership, Dustin experienced a two-year struggle with anxiety and depression. In this conversation, he reflects on the lessons God taught him during that difficult season and how those experiences inspired his book, The Wilderness Way. Dustin shares how the wilderness seasons of life, though painful, can become places where God forms deeper faith, healing, and hope.

In this second episode of a two-episode interview, host David Mandell continues his conversation with Corey Kleinschmidt, an industry veteran in the locum tenens space. The episode kicks off with a recap of Part 1 and a reintroduction to Cory's extensive background in the industry, including his work with Jackson Healthcare and his current role at Locumpedia. The focus then shifts to actionable steps for physicians considering locum—starting with educating themselves through resources like Locumpedia's No BS Guide and connecting with other providers who've already taken the plunge. Cory outlines the importance of understanding the business side of locums, emphasizing that physicians are essentially independent contractors. This means getting smart about taxes, possibly forming an LLC, and making strategic choices about which agencies to partner with. He explains how working with staffing firms can simplify everything from job placement to credentialing and malpractice coverage, while also highlighting the variability in agency models—some being high-touch and others more transactional. Licensing and credentialing are also critical topics covered in this episode. Cory discusses the value of multi-state licensing and the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC), as well as how staffing firms often assist in navigating these hurdles. The conversation wraps up with a look at contracts, pay structures, and what to expect in terms of housing, travel reimbursement, and malpractice coverage. David and Cory underscore the importance of doing your homework to ensure a successful and rewarding locum tenens experience. KEY INSIGHTS: The No BS Guide on Locumpedia is a comprehensive starting point for understanding locum tenens. Locumpedia's “Locum CME” news roundup keeps physicians up to date on trends, including how AI is shaping the field. Talking to other physicians with locum experience can offer real-world insight into the pros and cons. Most physicians working locums are classified as independent contractors and should understand how this affects taxes and benefits. Many physicians form LLCs to optimize tax deductions and liability protection. Staffing firms play a central role in matching physicians to opportunities and handling all non-clinical logistics. There are over 200 locum tenens agencies, so it's important to research and vet potential partners through reviews and referrals. The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) can simplify multi-state licensing for qualified physicians. Staffing firms often provide malpractice insurance, travel and housing—details that should be reviewed in the contract. Contracts typically include compensation terms, responsibilities, reimbursement policies, and clauses like noncompetes and cancellation terms. In this first episode of a two-episode interview, host David Mandell speaks with Cory Kleinschmidt, an industry veteran in the locum tenens space. Cory shares his journey into the field, which began unexpectedly in the late 1990s when he helped develop LocumTenens.com, a job board that played a significant role in the industry's growth. He later founded Locumpedia, a digital platform dedicated to locum tenens professionals, offering resources, job listings, and insights into the industry. Cory explains the concept of locum tenens, which allows physicians to work as temporary providers in various healthcare settings, providing them with flexibility, higher earnings, and work-life balance. He highlights how the industry has evolved from a necessary staffing solution to a strategic workforce model, driven by growing physician shortages and changing work preferences. This first part of a two-episode interview also covers trends in locum tenens, including the increasing interest from younger physicians, the rising demand for specific specialties like neurology, cardiology, and psychiatry, and the impact of AI. Cory emphasizes that locum tenens is becoming an essential part of healthcare staffing, allowing doctors to explore different practice environments while mitigating burnout and financial stress. Key Insights: Locum tenens, meaning "to hold the place," originated in the Catholic Church before transitioning into healthcare staffing. The industry has grown significantly, with more physicians, especially younger ones, choosing it for career flexibility and income potential. Locumpedia is a digital platform that provides a free, centralized resource for physicians and healthcare organizations. The No-BS Guide to Locum Tenens was created to offer straightforward, unbiased insights into locum work. See https://www.locumpedia.com/. Locum tenens physicians work as 1099 independent contractors, allowing them to take advantage of tax benefits and business deductions. The demand for locum tenens is increasing due to physician shortages, burnout, and changing work preferences. Specialties such as hospital medicine, neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, anesthesiology, and radiology are currently in high demand. AI is expected to impact radiology, but the combination of AI with skilled radiologists is seen as the future rather than full automation. More doctors are using locum tenens as a way to test different work environments before committing to full-time positions. Locum tenens is becoming an essential part of modern healthcare staffing, allowing hospitals to adapt to patient demand and financial constraints efficiently. David Kleinschmidt is the owner of Progressive Agronomy Consulting Services. His experience, keen observations, and thorough scrutiny of data makes for a great discussion as he and Monte explore real-time soil health systems and the tools he uses to evaluate those systems. There are no silver bullets when it comes to the tools and resources farmers implement. But there is a path forward built on informed decisions, adaptability, and a deep understanding of your unique farming system. As David shares, soil health is a journey, not a destination. With his work focusing on better soil testing, nutrient cycling, and the power of timing and diversity, he continues to bridge the gap between conventional and regenerative practices, empowering farmers to make informed decisions that benefit both their present needs and future sustainability. And if you'd like to make informed decisions on adopting effective soil health practices, let us help! You can contact us at asn.farm and find us on Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and Rumble. David Kleinschmidt grew up on a diverse family farm in west-central Illinois, cultivating corn, soybeans, wheat, hogs, and even Christmas trees. Originally pursuing veterinary studies, he shifted to agricultural economics after realizing the importance of managing farms for profitability. From 2004 to 2012, David worked in ag retail, selling seed, chemicals, fertilizers, and installing planter systems. His career took a pivotal turn in 2012 when he began promoting cover crops to farmers, sparking his interest in soil health and the overlooked biological dynamics of farming. This shift led him to a path of observational farming and in-depth research into soil biology. In 2018, David left the corporate ag retail world to start consulting, embracing a purist approach to promoting cover crops, no-till, and holistic soil management. Today, he focuses on empowering farmers with advanced soil testing, optimized nutrient application timing, and fostering microbial diversity, bridging conventional and regenerative practices to enhance both immediate yields and long-term soil health. https://www.facebook.com/progressiveagronomyconsulting Got questions you want answered?
