Kristen Daley, a communications/development strategist specializing in sexual violence, survivor-centric crisis response, and justice system reform, and Kenny Smith, law enforcement training director and retired law enforcement professional, join the conversation to explore the language we use to discuss sexual violence and how that discourse can help or hurt individuals who experience sexual violence. Together we review the terms sexual assault, rape, survivor, victim, alleged and more to understand how these terms are used and to establish some best practices for talking about crimes of sexual violence. Kristin Daley is the Executive Director of New Blue, a nationwide police reform incubator changing police culture through policies and practices that prioritize empathy and equity. Previously, Ms. Daley spent 16 years as Director of Development & Communications for Law Enforcement Action Partnership, police experts advocating for evidence-based reform; she now serves on LEAP's Board of Directors. A nationally credentialed victim advocate, Ms. Daley is a longtime crisis response counselor and liaison for RAINN's National Sexual Assault Hotline. She also consults privately on trauma-informed best practices and communications strategy with organizations and individual survivors challenging the justice system. In 2022, Ms. Daley was appointed to the Peace Corps Sexual Assault Advisory Council, a panel of national subject matter experts in the field of sexual violence prevention and response. Alison Myrden began her career as a Corrections Officer in 1988 after working with the Children's Aid Society. In addition to her website, you can find Alison at the following social media:  Twitter  -- LinkedIn -- Facebook -- During her career, Alison worked at troubled youth facilities around Southern Ontario and eventually solidified her niche with Young Offender cases in early 1989 at Community Resource Services. During her career, Alison was responsible for various duties including attending court, facility shifts and as court liaison for Cassatta Youth Custodial Facilities. One of her most challenging assignments included working with Psychiatric Young Offenders at a Secure Custody Facility. While working in the Youth Court Justice system, Alison noticed many Young Offenders were in trouble with the law for simple experimentation with illicit drugs. This seemed very wrong to her. Alison felt it would be better to educate these young people about drugs instead of punishing them. It seemed to her that our youth were being criminalized for no good reason. Around the same time, Alison was diagnosed with chronic progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She began experiencing Tic Doloureux (bilateral trigeminal neuralgia), an excruciating facial pain associated with MS. Soon after retiring in 1992, she was introduced to medicinal cannabis. She found immediate relief with cannabis without the harmful side effects of the other, more addictive medications. It was then that Alison became an activist for drug law reform. In 1995, Alison was prescribed cannabis for pain relief after her legal, doctor-supervised cocaine and heroin therapy, along with other prescription medications that proved to be insufficient. In 2000, Alison received a s.56 exemption from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to possess and grow cannabis for medical purposes, but was frustrated at not having her own high-quality, cost-effective supply. In 2004, Alison began working with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), which was renamed Law Enforcement Action Partnership, where she was the first female speaker in Canada to represent LEAP U.S. until 2016, when she branched out on her own. For over 35 years, in over 1,000 interviews, Alison described the "War on Drugs" as a "War on People", calling for its end.  While cannabis was legalized in Canada in 2018, Alison believes the government has not supported those people who need high quality doses of cannabis products at reasonable prices for medical purposes. In 2017, Alison became the first Authorized Pain Patient in the World for Medical Psilocybin for pain relief.  She applied to Health Canada in 2019 for an exemption from the CDSA to grow her own mushrooms with a daily dose of 50 g. Last month, Health Canada denied her request. Episode 57 - Neil Woods, The Real Story Behind The War on Drugs The mighty, wise and brilliant Neil Woods joins Zach on this all new episode of the MAPS Podcast. Neil discusses his insights when he spent 13 years as an undercover drugs operative in the UK and how his experiences led to an awakening to course correct and lead the charge in fighting the war on drugs. Neil is a wonderfully eloquent speaker and story teller, you won't want to miss his one of a kind insight into a global war that has failed nearly everyone involved.  Neil is a former UK police officer and undercover drugs operative. Now he's an active member of the international drug policy reform movement. He worked undercover between 1993 and 2007 befriending and gaining the trust of some of the most violent, unpredictable criminals in Britain.  With the insight that can only come from having fought on its front lines, Neil came to see the true futility of the War on Drugs - that it demonises those who need help, and empowers the very worst elements in society.  Neil is a board member of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) in the USA, and in the U.K. (LEAP UK).

Diane Goldstein spent over 20 years as a police officer, retiring as a lieutenant, and now her mission is to end the bureaucracy, prohibition and moralizing that has led to corruption, police brutality, militarization and death. She joins The Tatiana Show on this episode to talk about a variety of subjects including how the public has unrealistic expectations of police officers, how the drug war has led to agency overreach, police use of military equipment, the Breonna Taylor case and what the police did wrong, COVID-19 and how government regulations make anti-police sentiment worse, the riots and looting that have sprung up alongside the Black Lives Matter movement, and how civil asset forfeiture and punitive ticketing artificially props up bad policing. Ret. Lt. Goldstein currently serves as chairperson of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership, a civil action group dedicated to organizing members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities in support of criminal justice reform, decriminalization, and redirecting of police funding to fighting real crime and providing true community engagement & protection. To learn more, visit LawEnforcementAction.org. About the Guest: Diane Goldstein joined the Redondo Beach Police Department in 1983. She rose from a Patrol Officer and School Resource Officer to Sergeant in the Special Investigations Unit, served as a Division Commander, and retired as a lieutenant in 2004. She was the first female lieutenant in the department. Goldstein came to oppose prohibition through the tragic loss of a close family member who couldn’t get the help he needed because the justice system is inadequately designed to help people struggling with mental health and addiction issues. Goldstein coordinated multiple agencies in probation and parole searches and became a specialist in juvenile crime prevention, gang intervention, and a recognized leader in crisis management. She also developed national training guidelines and policies for use during critical incidents. A founding member of the California Association of Hostage Negotiators, Goldstein received that organization’s Honorary Life Member Award, and earned the Herman Goldstein Excellence in Problem Solving Team Award (Honorary Mention) for her work with a gang interdiction task force. This week we discuss the tragic killing of George Floyd, the historic social unrest that has resulted, and how political leaders have responded to protests now occurring around the world.  On May 25, 2020, a series of events began to unfold that would change the world. George Floyd, a black man, died while being restrained by law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Derek Chauvin, a white officer with a record of complaints for which he had not been previously penalized, was filmed pressing his knee against Floyd's neck, as Floyd complained that he could not breathe. Floyd, handcuffed and lying face down, became unresponsive and is believed to have died prior to the arrival of first responders. Chauvin was later charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.  The resulting civil unrest has been of truly historic proportions, on par with the upheaval seen during the L.A. Riots and following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. On this edition of the program, after analyzing the social, media and political response to Floyd's killing, we are joined by Lt. Tim McMillan, a retired law enforcement officer and former implicit bias instructor, and recognized expert with the Law Enforcement Action Partnership. McMillan talks with us about race issues in law enforcement, the idea of "contact theory," and concerns over the "militarization" of law enforcement. Possessing small amounts of cannabis was decriminalized in Maryland four years ago. But more than 10 grams is still a misdemeanor -- and recent data show that in Baltimore, nearly all those arrested are black. Journalist Brandon Soderberg, who crunched the numbers, noted the data comes as Baltimore faces serious challenges in criminal justice. A coalition of criminal justice reform, health policy, human rights, and faith-based organizations have launched a new public education and advocacy campaign to urge the creation, expansion, and robust use of federal and state programs with the intent of granting early release to prisoners with compelling circumstances, such as a terminal or age-related illness. "The Campaign for Compassionate Release" comprises a diverse group of organizations, including Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM), American Conservative Union Foundation, Human Rights Watch, National Council of Churches, Law Enforcement Action Partnership, and National Disability Rights Network. Today I'll be joined by Mary Price, General Counsel of Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM) to discuss the topic of Compassionate Release. Plus, don't forget about the Edwards Notebook and the Veteran's Tip of the Day! All of this and more as time allows. Listen live, join the chatroom, be a part of the show.Tapp into the Truth

Are we finally on the verge of a breakthrough when it comes to public opinion about prohibition? It's an exciting time to be an activist for criminal justice reform, thanks especially to people like Lieutenant Diane Goldstein, Ret., whose decades of experience on the police force make her case for decriminalization a lot harder for law enforcement to ignore. Diane is a rockstar speaker, board member, and investigative reporter with the Law Enforcement Action Partnership, whose mission is to unite and mobilize the voice of law enforcement in support of drug policy and criminal justice reform. Which means there's a whole network of “good cops” out there we can tap into to back up our own advocacy efforts. So here's what you'll learn in this episode of Leading Liberty: What inspired a former narcotics officer to dedicate the rest of her career to criminal justice reform The two-word distinction making a 180-degree difference in how even our unlikely allies respond to the idea of letting adults make their own decisions A shocking new statistic about the unintended consequences of the drug war that's impossible for even the most conservative elected officials to ignore The first phone call to make to start a conversation about criminal justice reform in your own community And lots more! So on that note, let's dive into the interview!
