I am joined by Dr Pete Watson from the University of Leeds, and Karen Ariza Carranza, journalist, founder of Tribuna Krizol - a platform to promote social change in sports and the participation of Colombian women in sports - and she's also an International Olympic Committee young leader. We're looking at the role of women's football within Colombia as an agent for change. In this episode, we cover: The Rise of Women's Football in Colombia: We look at the historical context of women's football in Colombia, and its growing significance both nationally and internationally. The Development of Women's Football in Colombia: We explore how women's football in Colombia has developed later than the men's game, with the first professional league only established in 2017. The Global Stage: We highlight the importance of international tournaments, particularly Colombia's 2015 Women's World Cup victory over France, in boosting visibility and media attention for the sport. 'Critical Visibility Moments': We analyse the role of 'critical visibility moments', where women's football gains media traction, often when the men's team underperforms or is absent from major competitions. Club Structures in Colombia: We examine how club football remains structurally weak, with a lack of investment, limited teams, and dependence on men's clubs for survival. The Role of Linda Caicedo: We discuss the growing impact of key figures like Linda Caicedo, an Afro-Colombian player who overcame cancer to become a global star, now playing for Real Madrid. Growing Media Attention: We acknowledge that while women's football in Colombia has gained more mainstream media coverage, it still faces systemic challenges, including gender inequality, inadequate funding, and inconsistent broadcasting. How Does Colombian Women's Football Compare with its Latin American Peers?: We compare Colombia's success in women's football to Argentina's struggles, positioning Colombia as the second-strongest team in South America behind Brazil. Activism is Making a Difference: We emphasise the role of grassroots activism, independent media, and journalists advocating for greater representation and support for the women's game. What Does the Future Hold?: We conclude by considering the future of Colombian women's football, noting its potential to rival Brazil, provided the necessary structural and financial support is secured from the federation and clubs.

Jace Peterson bunted pinch-runner Tyler Wade to third to start the 10th. Tyler Horton (0-1) struck out Shea Langeliers for the second out before Noda slapped a single to left — one of just two hits for Oakland in the game — to break the scoreless struggle. Shintaro Fujinami (5-7) got the win after striking out the side in the ninth. Trevor May pitched a scoreless 10th for his sixth save. Cubs 7, Brewers 6 – F/11 – Happ saves Cubs with 2 late throws to plate in wild 7-6 win over Brewers in 11 Left fielder Ian Happ threw out two runners at the plate in extra innings, and the Chicago Cubs pulled out a wild 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in 11 innings after squandering a late lead for the second consecutive game. Dansby Swanson homered and Miguel Amaya hit a two-run double to help the Cubs build a 6-2 cushion. But the Brewers scored twice in the eighth and twice more in the ninth to tie it. Happ cut down the potential winning run at home in the bottom of the 10th, and Chicago went ahead in the 11th when Cody Bellinger scored on Nico Hoerner’s infield single. Happ then threw out Owen Miller at the plate to end the game. Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3 – Guerrero Jr. hits 2-run homer in 8th inning to lift Blue Jays to 4-3 win over White Sox Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Guerrero gave Toronto a 4-3 lead when he connected against Joe Kelly (1-4) after Brandon Belt led off the eighth with a walk. The three-time All-Star went the opposite way on a 2-1 pitch, driving it out to right for his 13th home run. All-Star Whit Merrifield had two hits and two RBIs, and the Blue Jays got back to winning coming off a three-game sweep by Boston. White Sox All-Star Luis Robert Jr. made it 3-2 in the sixth with a long three-run drive against Chris Bassitt for his 25th homer. The Cubs blew a late four-run lead but rebounded to beat the Brewers 7-6 in 11 innings. Ross praised his team’s resiliency, but many of his postgame comments focused on a series of “frustrating” calls and events throughout the game. Ross was perturbed that plate umpire Erich Bacchus prematurely called out Dansby Swanson when there were only two strikes, and he felt a Brewers baserunner interfered with a throw that allowed a run to score. Ross and first base coach Mike Napoli were both ejected. Ross also questioned why the Brewers closed their retractable roof on a mostly sunny afternoon. MLB – Ohtani leaves Angels game with blister, says he doesn’t plan to pitch in ASG Shohei Ohtani says he’s not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game next week after leaving the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-5 loss to the San Diego Padres with a blister on the middle finger of his right hand Tuesday. The two-way superstar could still play a significant role if he remains the starting designated hitter for the American League in Seattle. Ohtani exited on the mound against the Padres after giving up consecutive home runs in the sixth inning. The right-hander’s start had been pushed back a day due to a cracked fingernail. His velocity was down, and he left trailing 5-1. His exit came several hours after the Angels learned they’ll be without fellow All-Star slugger Mike Trout for several weeks because of a broken left wrist.  Trout will need surgery to repair his injury. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Indiana Fever at Minnesota Lynx, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – Mystics acquire Queen Egbo from Fever for Amanda Zahui B. The Washington Mystics acquired Queen Egbo from the Indiana Fever for Amanda Zahui B. Egbo has appeared in 16 games this season for the Fever, averaging 2.9 points and 4.1 rebounds. Washington’s post depth has been depleted with the hip strain to Shakira Austin and Elena Delle Donne’s rolled ankle. Egbo was taken 10th in the 2022 WNBA draft by the Fever and was honored as part of the All-Rookie team last year. Zahui B. played in 12 games after signing with the Mystics in February. She averaged 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds this season. Tennis – Andy Murray gets a win at rainy Wimbledon and a thumbs-up from Roger Federer Roger Federer and Andy Murray have provided the highlights on a rainy Day 2 at Wimbledon. Light but persistent showers prevented the completion or even start of dozens of matches. Federer was honored at Centre Court before the start of play there under the closed roof and he stayed to watch Murray beat Ryan Peniston in straight sets in an all-British matchup. Other winners included No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 12 Cam Norrie among the men, and three top women: defending champion Elena Rybakina, 2002 runner-up Ons Jabeur and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka. Golf – LPGA – Column: US Women’s Open at Pebble reminds veterans what they’re missing The U.S. Women’s Open is finally at Pebble Beach, the most recognizable of all U.S. Open courses. That’s a little too late for so many Hall of Famers who are at Pebble for a reunion of past Open champions. But it’s all about going forward, the USGA is making up for lost time. It’s one thing to be at Pebble Beach. What figures to lift the profile is for the Women’s Open to be going to Riviera and Oakland Hills, back to Oakmont and Interlachen. Being at historical venues help winners become part of golf history. Soccer – US talents Smith, Thompson headline the rising stars at Women’s World Cup The Women’s World Cup will be a showcase for some of the best young soccer players in the game. Two of them play for the United States. Sophia Smith and Alyssa Thompson are expected to lead the next generation of American players. Expect plenty from 21-year-old England player Lauren James, 18-year-old Colombia talent Linda Caicedo, 21-year-old Jamaica striker Jody Brown and 19-year-old Haiti midfielder Melchie Dumornay. Morgan says she feels calmer heading into this World Cup and wants to represent mom athletes. She’s one of three mothers on this U.S. squad and is often accompanied by 3-year-old daughter Charlie. Hot Dogs – Joey Chestnut shakes off rain delay and defends title at Nathan’s Eating superstar Joey “Jaws” Chestnut shook off a rain delay and gobbled his way to another win at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest. Chestnut downed 62 franks and buns in 10 minutes for a double-digit victory over his nearest competitor, who ate 49. It was Chestnut’s 16th win. In the women’s division, defending champion Miki Sudo forced down 39 1/2 hot dogs and buns to claim her ninth title. The women’s contest went off on schedule but stormy weather moved over New York City’s Coney Island delayed the men’s competition for about two hours.
