It's Friday, April 25th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims have killed 170 Christians during Lent and Easter Nigerian Muslims killed 170 Christians during the Lenten season and on Easter Sunday in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, reports International Christian Concern. In Benue State, 72 Christians were confirmed dead following a series of deadly attacks by suspected Fulani Muslim militants between April 18 and April 20. They struck multiple villages in Ukum and Logo Counties during the Holy Weekend, turning what should have been a time of solemn reflection and worship into a scene of terror. Governor Hyacinth Alia, who visited the affected areas, described the massacre as “a calculated and strategic attack on innocent Christian farmers.” He also said, “These were peaceful people observing their Holy Weekend. The scale and timing of the violence is heartbreaking. We cannot continue like this.” Please pray Amos 5:24 -- that “God's justice would roll on like a river.” Massive Russian strike on Ukraine's capital On Thursday night, Russia attacked Kyiv, Ukraine with an hours-long barrage of missiles and drones, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 70 in its deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital since last July, reports CBS News. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 66 ballistic and cruise missiles, four plane-launched air-to-surface missiles, and 145 Shahed and decoy drones at Kyiv and four other regions of Ukraine. On Truth Social, President Donald Trump wrote, "I am not happy with the Russian strikes on Kyiv. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5,000 soldiers a week are dying. Let's get the Peace Deal DONE!" TRUMP: “We're putting a lot of pressure on Russia, and Russia knows that, and some people that are close to it know or he wouldn't be talking right now.” In response to Russia's aggressive strikes in Western Ukraine, NATO has heightened its alert level, placing fighter jets in the "highest state of readiness," reports The Express. Former Brazilian president in ICU Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's health condition has worsened following bowel surgery nearly two weeks ago, his doctors said Thursday, reports MSN.com. The medical team said the former president “experienced a clinical decline, elevated blood pressure and worsening liver lab test results." Bolsonaro underwent a 12-hour surgery on April 13 to remove intestinal adhesions and reconstruct the abdominal wall after the assassination attempt by stabbing in the abdomen during a campaign rally in September 2018. Democrat Senator Dick Durbin, a pro-abort, will not seek re-election Democrat Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois made an announcement on Wednesday, DURBIN: “There comes a point in your career when the torch must be passed, and I've reached that point. I will not be seeking re election to this United States Senate seat.” To his shame, Senator Durbin, age 80, has consistently voted to eliminate or prevent protections for the unborn and for children born alive after failed abortions. In addition, Senator Durbin has voted to use hard-earned tax dollars to pay for abortion, including abortion travel expenses. And he has worked to allow radical abortion ideology to be inserted into every facet of the United States Government. Illinois July 4th parade shooter sentenced to life in prison On Thursday, Robert Crimo III, the gunman who killed seven people and injured dozens in a mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, during a July 4th parade in 2022, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, reports ABC News. Judge Victoria Rossetti sentenced Crimo, age 24, to seven consecutive life sentences along with 50 years in prison for each person injured, Judge Rosetti said, "This court hopes this sentence brings a sense of justice and an end to the continued horror." However, the judge ignored God's just standard articulated in Genesis 9:6 which says, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God has God made mankind." Max Lucado got a tattoo Max Lucado, the Christian bestselling writer and pastor of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, took to social media to announce he got a tattoo, reports MyChristianDaily.com. Located on his forearm, he chose the word “Tetelestai” which is Greek for “It is finished!” That is what Jesus uttered from the cross when He had paid our sin debt, according to John 19:30. Lucado said, “I'm celebrating the golden anniversary of God's great grace in my life. 50 years ago this spring, grace found me. My testimony is interwoven with my favorite word in the Bible. On the cross, Christ proclaimed, in Greek, “Tetelestai!” Among the meanings of this word is, ‘paid in full'.” He added, “Not everyone likes the idea of a 70-year-old pastor getting a tattoo. That's ok. I didn't do it for people, I did it to say thank you to Jesus who paid a debt I could not pay.” However, Leviticus 19:28 says, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.” How “In God We Trust” became American motto And finally, on April 22, 1864, the United States informally adopted the motto "In God We Trust." Conceived during the Civil War, Union supporters wanted to emphasize their attachment to God and to boost morale. The fourth stanza of the U.S. national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner", adopted from the 1814 poem "The Defense of Fort McHenry", contains the line: "And this be our motto—'In God is our trust.'" “In God We Trust” was officially adopted by Congress in 1956, replacing the defacto motto of “E Pluribus Unum” which is Latin for “Out of Many, One.” Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, April 25th, in the year of our Lord 2025. When Joshua stood at the edge of Canaan, ready to lead Israel into the land of promise, God didn't give him a battle plan or a strategy session. He gave him one command: Stay in the Word. More than two thousand years ago God broke through the barrier separating sinful humanity from a Holy God and took on human flesh in the form of a tiny baby. Christianity says all of human history had been building to that monumental event that separated time. Why did God, the creator of the universe, decide to enter our world, not as an avenging angel, but as a vulnerable and innocent baby? It's because of love. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Pastor Max Lucado, best-selling author and preacher, talks about the true meaning of Christmas. That Christmas set into motion the life-altering cosmos calamity that closed the chasm between God and sinful man."Christmas", says Lucado, "begins what Easter celebrates." The two highest holy days of the Christain calendar are eternally linked. While Christmas has become much more commercialized with shopping and Santa taking center stage, it hasn't changed the reality that the peace and joy we talk about on Christmas cards and ad slogans, flows only from this one event, the birth of Jesus: "For God so loved the world!" Warren On today's program, Liberty University reaches a settlement with former president Jerry Falwell Jr. after years of back-and-forth lawsuits between the two parties. Now, they say they are putting the past behind them. We'll have details. And, a small university in North Carolina is beating the odds…while other Christian colleges face closure, this school is thriving. We take a look at what they're doing. Also, Steven Furtick's Elevation Church released its annual report—the Charlotte-area church saw revenue of more than $108-million in 2023. Natasha But first, the leadership at Gateway Church continues its shakeup following revelations that its founding pastor Robert Morris abused a minor in the 1980s. Warren: Seven weeks after Robert Morris resigned from Gateway Church after Cindy Clemishire publicly claimed he abused her when she was 12 years old, Gateway has announced that Morris' son, James Morris, is stepping away from the church. James Morris was slated to take over church leadership after his father's impending retirement in 2025. But after Clemishire's claims went public, Robert Morris admitted “moral failure" with a “young lady” before resigning as the Texas megachurch's lead pastor. Weeks later, James Morris and three other elders announced they would temporarily step down to allow room for a third-party investigation. But last week, in a special announcement to the congregation, Gateway elder Tra Willbanks announced that James Morris and his wife, Bridgette Morris, had decided to permanently relinquish their positions at Gateway. Natasha: How did the congregation take that? Warren: Church attendees gave them a standing ovation. Then Willbanks said Gateway elders support James and Bridgette Morris' desire to establish a church in the future. I should mention that James and Bridgette Morris are not the only ones to have left in the fallout of Robert Morris' resignation. According to the leadership pages on its website, Gateway has made additional changes to its staff and elder board. It removed former-felon-turned-Prison Ministry Campus Pastor Stephen Wilson after Wilson's past sex charges from 2002 involving a minor became public. Natasha: Who is going to minister as the church moves forward? Warren: Willbanks informed congregants that Max Lucado, a popular author and teaching minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, and Swedish pastor Joakim Lundqvist, will be filling leadership roles at the church. Lucado will become the interim teaching pastor, preaching at Gateway about twice a month. Lundqvist will share preaching duties with Lucado and take on a pa...

Quiet Time Coaching Episode 493 | New Thing Series — Part 48 | “Nehemiah's Focus” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new thing! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to your daily devotional podcast anchored in Isaiah 43:19: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.' We are currently looking at God doing a new thing in the life of Nehemiah. Today we explore Nehemiah's focus. “Now when it was reported to…our enemies that I had built the wall and that there was no gap left in it…Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to come down to you?” They sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner. In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. In it was written, “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem also says it—that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and according to this report you wish to become their king. You have also set up prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning you, ‘There is a king in Judah!' And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. So come, therefore, and let us confer together.” Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say have been done; you are inventing them out of your own mind” —for they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands. One day when I went into the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah son of Mehetabel…he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, tonight they are coming to kill you.” But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Would a man like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!” Then I perceived and saw that God had not sent him at all, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. He was hired for this purpose, to intimidate me and make me sin by acting in this way, and so they could give me a bad name, in order to taunt me. Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid. So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. (Selections from Nehemiah 6:1-19 NRSV) To quote from Fabian's notes on Nehemiah, “He stayed focused on the goal during times of opposition and distractions, while adapting his approach to the environment and circumstances.” Nehemiah's Focus - Nehemiah encountered opposition who aimed to distract him from the work God had given him - Their attempts were persistent - They attempted to sow fear in his heart about what other people might be thinking about him - They made up stories about him - He prayed to be strong - He refused to be distracted or to weaken in his purpose For Reflection “Jesus was constantly criticised by others, but he never criticised in return. He didn't get angry or discouraged because of what the Pharisees, scribes, or nonbelievers said about him. Jesus did what we're taught as children to do—treat others the way you want to be treated. Negative criticism is a distraction from God's purpose for your life.” Lucado, Max; Gets Us, He. He Gets Us: Experiencing the confounding love, forgiveness, and relevance of Jesus (p. 90). Thomas Nelson. Kindle Edition. Discussing the challenge of distractions, J. Tyrone Marcus writes, “It could be a desire for excess rest, relaxation, and leisure. It could be saying yes to good things when you should have been saying no in order to invest in the best things. It could be the emotional hills and valleys that inevitably present themselves as life progresses. It may even be the occasional allure of returning to the company of people from your past, because you miss the “fun,” dangerous as it was to your well-being. The issue, though, is not the distractions. It's our response to them.” Marcus, J. Tyrone. Unbeatable: Seven Pillars of Personal Excellence (p. 45). N/A. Kindle Edition. Why not ask God today to make you aware of distractions drawing you away from your best efforts to honour God and build his kingdom? Conclusion I hope you find your heart, your life, your congregation and your world inspired by God doing a new thing. Until tomorrow, take care, and God bless. Join me as Max Lucado and I discuss this topic as well as his new book. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3318297/advertisement
Bonjour! Stephanie here. You know how sometimes we love to have Christmas in July? Or, in this case, maybe in September? Today was such a special day for me. I just had the most delightful conversation with Max Lucado about the power of honesty and the grace of God. Here is what Max has to tell you: “Could you use a fresh reminder of God's grace? Do you need to be told, maybe for the first time, God never gives up on you? If so, join Stephanie and me for a delightful conversation about God's grace, about the beautiful city of Paris, about life in a world where forgiveness is abundant. Join us, please, on Gospel Spice.” And, yes, we also did talk about Paris, about good food and all sorts of other fun things. And I'm honestly still processing the richness of our conversation. I cannot wait to share it with you. We're going to talk about the dangers of manipulation, and the hope that honesty brings into our lives. You're going to find yourself probably agreeing with us on the unmatched, though often misunderstood power of grace in Christ. We're laughing and we're almost crying together from sheer gratitude over God's goodness for us. And I'm sure you can relate. Have you ever wondered if you've had one too many stumbles for God to use someone like you? Or, have you asked if you could benefit from an encounter with God's unending, unbending, unswerving love and freedom? That is what Max talked about with me today—through the lens of Jacob's life. And if your answer is yes, like Jacob, then Max invites you to see how God's grace transformed Jacob's life. Now, I really wish I couldn't relate to Jacob as much as I do because he's not the perfect hero by any means. If anything, he's quite the anti-hero. He's a manipulative cheat, and he doesn't understand grace until God literally smacks him with it, disabling his hip in the process. And so Max Lucado and I talked about that – and we invite you to join the conversation right now! MORE ABOUT “GOD NEVER GIVES UP ON YOU.” Ever wonder if you've had one too many stumbles for God to use someone like you? Could you benefit from an encounter with God's unending, unbending, unswerving love and devotion? If your answer is yes, it's time for you to see how God's grace transformed Jacob's life. And if you feel undeserving of God's grace, this book will serve as a refresher course on God's perfect plan to use imperfect people to do great things. God Never Gives Up on You is for the strugglers among us and the fumbler within us. For those of us who are part saint, part scoundrel; we mean well, but we don't always do well. We have breakthroughs and breakdowns, often in the same hour. We need no reminder of our failures, but we could always use a refresher course on God's perfect plan to use imperfect people to do great things. But where can we find examples of God's steadfast grace? No one is more suited to help assure you of God's grace than Jacob. He was less a prodigy and more a prodigal. Strong on savvy. Weak on conscience. Jacob took advantage of his famished brother and pulled the wool over the eyes of his dying father, yet God never turned his back on Jacob. And he won't turn his back on you. If you are ready to start counting on God's grace and believe he never gives up on you, this book is for you. Jacob's story invites us to believe in a God who sticks beside the unworthy and underachievers and leads us safely home. If God can use Jacob to further his kingdom, he can use us too. MORE ABOUT MAX LUCADO Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and best-selling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don't read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him. As a writer, Max is known for combining poetic storytelling and homespun humor with the heart of a pastor. All of his trade books began as sermon series at Oak Hills Church, and his sermons all begin with Max asking himself this question: “What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?” He's been dubbed “America's Pastor” by Christianity Today, and “The Best Preacher in America” by Reader's Digest. Max's books have sold more than 145 million copies in over 50 languages worldwide. He published On the Anvil, his first trade book, in 1985. His 44th trade book, Help Is Here, was released in 2022. Max's books regularly appear on bestseller lists, including The New York Times. His writing has also been featured in Bible studies, Bible commentaries, songs, greeting cards, and even plush toys. He is the recipient of the 2021 ECPA Pinnacle Award for his outstanding contribution to the publishing industry. Max's love for everyday people began during his childhood in the small town of Andrews, Texas. His father was an oilfield mechanic, his mother was a nurse, and Max spent a lot of his time either running from or running after his brother, Dee. Max grew rebellious in his teenage years, and after one specific drunken night, he began to wonder if there was more to life than parties and chasing girls. He now believes that if Jesus hadn't found him and changed his heart, alcoholism would have been in his future. After high school, Max attended Abilene Christian University and left with two degrees and a heart for following Jesus and helping others learn about him, too. He moved to Miami, Florida, and took a position as an associate pastor at a small church. This is where Max started writing about Jesus for the first time in the church's monthly newsletter, and it's where he developed his passion for people and ministry. Florida was also where Max met his wife, Denalyn. Together, they lived first in Miami and then spent several years in Rio de Janeiro, helping plant churches. The newsletters Max wrote to family and friends while in Rio, along with the newsletters he wrote at his church in Miami, eventually formed the manuscript of his first book, On the Anvil. Max and Denalyn now live in San Antonio, Texas. They have three grown daughters, three sons-in-law, and two grandchildren. Some folks with less than stellar reputations may feel they are beyond God's help or interest. Biblical phrases like "God is love" simply ring hollow for them because their life has been one big sinful escapade after another. Best-selling author and minister Pastor Max Lucado destroys that kind of thinking with something that may surprise people. He uses one of the patriarchs of the Bible, Jacob, the father of twelve sons that become the twelve tribes of Israel. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Lucado talks about his new book, "God Never Gives Up On You: What Jacob's Story Teaches Us about Grace, Mercy, and God's Relentless Love." He writes, "If your halo never tilts, your faith never wavers, your Bible never closes, and your feet never stray form the straight and narrow, let me save some time. You won't relate to this story." Lucado makes it clear that God always works with faulted human beings, because frankly, that's all there is. He makes the point that none of us is immune from sin... but that sin never hinders God's love for us. Jacob's story in the Old Testament shows us that "When we are at our lowest, God is watching over us from the highest." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A Encouraging Word Isa 41:10 #Nightlight #RTTBROS "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." ISA 41:10 Have you ever been in a situation where you felt discouraged and hopeless? Maybe you were going through a difficult time and felt like giving up. In times like these, we need to hear encouraging words that lift us up and give us hope. The Bible is full of encouraging words, and one verse that always brings me comfort is found in the book of Isaiah. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." This verse is a powerful reminder that we are not alone in our struggles. God is with us, and He will strengthen us and help us through whatever we are facing. When we feel discouraged, it's easy to focus on our problems and forget that God is in control. But Isaiah 41:10 reminds us that God is our God, and He is with us. We don't have to be afraid or dismayed because He will strengthen us and help us. And not only that, but He will uphold us with His righteous right hand. Max Lucado, a well-known Christian author, often writes in a style that is both encouraging and relatable. He reminds us that God is always with us, even in our darkest moments. Lucado writes, "You are never alone. Not for a second. And you need not fear. God is with you. He is in you. He is for you. You can face anything, for His presence is your peace." So today, let us remember Isaiah 41:10 and the encouraging words it brings. Let us not be afraid or dismayed, but instead, let us trust in God's strength and help. And let us take comfort in the knowledge that we are never alone, for God is with us always. As Max Lucado says, "God's love is like a river, constantly flowing, always giving, never-ending. And it is this love that gives us the courage to face each day with hope and joy." By the age of 34, Max Lucado was burned out, struggling with insomnia, and begging the Lord to help him “have the wherewithal to preach the next day.” Now, decades later, Lucado is still pastoring—he's the teaching minister at Oak Hills Christian Church in San Antonio. He's written dozens of books in the years that have passed since he struggled to find the energy to keep going. Lucado doesn't attribute his renewal to his own efforts, though. Instead, he credits the Holy Spirit as the best friend, comforter, and one who came alongside him in his time of need. On this episode of The Russell Moore Show, Lucado and Moore discuss the dynamics of burnout. They talk about what it looks like to pray when it's hard or when we don't know what to say. And they explore challenging theological topics like spiritual warfare, church hurt, and what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Today we continue with a series based on Psalm 27. If you haven't already done so, I recommend listening to the first episode which covers some background thoughts on the context of the Psalm. Now, on to today's verse. “Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.” (Psalm 27:12 NIV11) The prayer progresses (from vv7-12) through: i. Addressing God ii. Reminding God that seeking Him is His idea iii. A plea for acceptance iv. An appeal to the divine nature of His love v. A request for guidance and strength vi A desire for protection in a specific situation False…accusations Does anything feel worse that false accusations made publicly and with some semblance of credibility? We have a spiritual accuser: “..the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.” (Revelation 12:10 NIV11) David's treatment is mirrored in that of Jesus, Matt 26.59; Mk 15.24, 29, 34; Lk 23.18, 25. Jesus endured such treatment without losing his trust in his Father. He had confidence in God's goodness just as David did - which we will see in the next two verses. How to respond “The key is to trust what He says and to doubt the accuser's accusations of our unworthiness. When we do this we give up attempts to make us feel good about ourselves.” Lucado, Grace After someone was baptised in 4th century Jerusalem they anointed the forehead (lose the shame of Adam), ears (to hear divine mysteries), nose (to become aroma of Christ), and chest (arm against the devil). Bradshaw, Early Christian Worship. It's an unnecessary, but meaningfully symbolic way of reinforcing the truth that our shame is removed. In hris book Shame Interrupted, Edward T. Welch says, “Listen for the love, hate the shame, and have no tolerance for resignation. That's the plan.” With God this is possible. What are the lessons from this verse? Are you facing external false accusations? If so, what does this Psalm teach you about the best way to respond? Similarly, are you facing internal false accusations? Has false guilt and shame got hold of you? If so, what does this Psalm teach you about the best way to respond? What is it about the example of Jesus that inspires you when you are falsely accused? We will conclude today's podcast with the song I wrote using the words of Psalm 27 verse 4. Next week we will proceed to the next verse of the Psalm. In the meantime, please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Listen as New Times Bestselling author Max Lucado reveals that to find help in today's life challenges requires the power of the Holy Spirit in his new book, Help Is Here. Let's face it, most of us are a little bit sketchy when it comes to understanding who the Holy Spirit is and what He actually does. Yes, "He." That's one of the identifiers that trips people up these days, especially in this gender-bending, Star Wars influenced worldview culture. It's much easier to think of this third member of the Holy Trinity as some ethereal spiritual force, "Let the Force be with you," than a person with power. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Pastor Max Lucado explains who this person the Holy Spirit is, and how we can tap into His power. The Bible talks about how our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. So that means this powerful being is close to us, as close as we want Him to be. Lucado preaches through his new book "Help Is Here" that this power has always been here. Like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz," you don't have to travel to some far-off land to find the refuge, strength and love you crave. It's here and now, right where you are. That's the power of the Holy Spirit. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

*¿Has estado tú cometiendo el mismo error? ¿Quién me puede condenar?*Max Lucado, In the Grip of Grace. The Book of Job The Question of the Ages—Why? “Most, if not all of us, have a contractual agreement with God. The fact that he hasn’t signed it doesn’t keep us from believing it. I pledge to be a good, decent person, and in return God will… save my child, …heal my wife, …protect my job, or… (fill in the blank). Only fair, right? Yet when God fails to meet our bottom-line expectations, we are left spinning in a tornado of questions. Is he good at all? Is God angry at me? Stumped? Overworked? Is his power limited? His authority restricted? Did the devil outwit him? When life isn’t good, what are we to think about God? Where is he in all this?” (Lucado, Max. You’ll Get Through This) When Tragedy Strikes, How Should We Respond? Job 1:20-22 (NIV) – [20] At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship [21] and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” [22] In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. 1. Job grieves. 2. Job worships. 3. Job surrenders. a. Job believes God caused his loss. b. And yet he worships the very one he believes took everything away. Wow! c. Job’s falling down in worship is a sign of surrender and acceptance to the sovereign will of God. d. Job acknowledged that he came into this world empty-handed and will leave it the same way. e. It is true that the Lord gives, for ALL the good in our lives come from Him. f. God even shows kindness to the wicked. g. While Job’s acceptance of the will of God is commendable, he is mistaken as to the identity of the one who has taken away these things from him. h. In this case, God is the one who gave, but Satan is the one who took away. i. Satan is a liar and a thief. John 8:44 (NIV) – [44] “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 10:10 (NIV) – [10] The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Ephesians 6:10-12 (NIV) – [10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. j. God did not cause Job’s loss, but He did allow it. k. God has the right to give, and God has the right to take away. 4. Job blesses. a. Though Job’s life seemed CURSED by the LORD, he still chose to BLESS the LORD. Job 1:21 (AMP) – [21] And said, Naked (without possessions) came I [into this world] from my mother's womb, and naked (without possessions) shall I depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed (praised and magnified in worship) be the name of the Lord! b. Blessed (barak) means to kneel, salute, or greet; the verb derives from the noun knee and perhaps suggests the bending of the knee in blessing. (The Complete Word Study Dictionary) c. Blessing signifies not only the act of a superior to an inferior, but also the expression of grateful praise proceeding from the inferior and ascending to the superior. (Synonyms of the Old Testament) d. One of the greatest weapons we have against Satan is to praise, and to worship, and to bless God. e. The best way we can turn the tables on the enemy is to bless God instead of doubt Him. f. Through his confession of faith, Job recognizes that God’s sovereign hand is at work; that is why he can bless God. g. We are not at the mercy of evil men, for even if they should do us harm, our God will use it for our good. 5. Job doesn’t sin. a. God never does wrong. Deuteronomy 32:4 (NIV) – [4] He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Job 34:10 (NIV) – [10] “So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. Psalms 92:15 (NIV) – [15] “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” b. Therefore, it is a sin to charge God with wrongdoing.
