Today on Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Zineb Riboua, a research fellow and program manager of Hudson Institute's Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East. She specializes in Chinese and Russian involvement in the Middle East, the Sahel, and North Africa, great power competition in the region, and Israeli-Arab relations. Riboua's pieces and commentary have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, the National Interest, the Jerusalem Post and Tablet among other outlets. She holds a master's of public policy from the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. She did her undergraduate studies in France, where she attended French preparatory classes and HEC Paris' Grande Ecole program. Her Substack is Beyond the Ideological. Razib and Riboua discuss the Trump administration's theory of tariffs as a tool of foreign policy and his attitudes toward multilateral diplomacy. They explore whether any principle beyond power and dominance underlies the current administration's approach, and consider the role of principles and values in foreign policy. Riboua elaborates a realist perspective in line with the thinking of Henry Kissinger. States have interests and abilities to execute on those interests; idealism is secondary. Riboua also discusses the fact that Trump seems attuned to how foreign politicians relate to the American domestic scene. He seems willing to punish those abroad whom he perceives to be favorable to his political enemies and reward those who are personally favorable toward him. Razib then asks Riboua about the geopolitics of her native Morocco, a relatively stable monarchy on northwest Africa's edge that has promoted moderate Islam, a good relationship with Europe and maintained a stable democracy.

Everyone involved in education from young people to tecahers to leaders to policy-makers are being asked some really tough questions in these current times. Do the systems and institutions that we are working and learning in still serve us? Did they ever? And what are we being called on to do differently? This week, it was such an amazing pleasure to chat with Zineb Mouhyi who is the co-founder of YouthXYouth, a global organisation that she set up with Valentina Raman, to convene action around transforming education systems but in a way that didn't excluding the core of these systems, the primary constituents that they were seeking to engage and serve: young people. YouthXYouth invited young people around the world to see the COVID-19 pandemic crisis as an opportunity to radically reimagine learning for themselves and their communities. In January 2021, they hosted their first online Learning Festival, which gathered nearly 1000 young people and adult allies from over 80 countries around a central question: What if young people designed the future of education?YouthXYouth has engaged over 2000 youth activists from 80 countries across 6 continents, buliding their capacity and confidence to reclaim their learning and create life-affirming futures within their communities. They are led by and serve youth who are between the ages of 15 to 26—75% of whom live in the Global South, and about 50% live in Africa.Zineb is also one of the co-founders of the Weaving Lab (https://weavinglab.org/), an international NGO and a community of weavers learning together how to interconnect people, projects and places to form thriving systems. Prior to that, she was the Policy & Partnership Development Officer at WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education), at the Qatar Foundation in Doha, where she mainly worked on education development policy research and on bringing different education stakeholders together to bring forth collaborations in education.Useful Links YxY Weavership Messaging Toolkit an opportunity for young people or youth organisations who might consider hosting a Weaver-in-Residence.YxY website: https://www.youthxyouth.com/Weavership Application: https://airtable.com/appYm9UwzGZxELiYA/shrHR2MmpZfVclJP5Authors mentioned during the conversation:Guy Debord - The Society of the Spectacle Loretta Ross - Calling In: How to Start Making Change with Those You'd Rather CancelLinkedIn: @zinebmouhyi - https://www.linkedin.com/in/zinebmouhyi/Instagram: @yxyactivists - https://www.instagram.com/yxyactivists/

With climate change accelerating the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, countries across the continent are grappling with the need for resilient infrastructure. This conversation couldn't be more timely: recently, Storm Boris brought nearly 500mm of rainfall—almost 20 inches—across Central Europe, testing current flood management defenses and highlighting critical gaps. In this episode, Zineb Moumen, an Analyst with Bluefield's Europe team, dives into the pressing issue of flood management and flood resiliency across Europe. Together, Zineb and podcast host Reese Tisdale explore how recent weather events like Storm Boris are shaping flood resilience strategies and investment in Europe, including traditional engineering projects and cutting-edge digital solutions. They also examine how these changes are shaping the market for engineering firms, utilities, and technology providers who are racing to keep pace with rising flood risks. In this session, Bluefield's water experts address these questions: How did Storm Boris challenge flood control efforts in Central Europe, and what lessons have emerged? How is climate change influencing investment in Europe's flood management, and where are the emerging opportunities? What role do digital tools and technologies play in today's flood management systems? How are insurers and financial services adjusting to increased flood risks? GUEST: Zineb “Zizi” Hattab Zizi is a trailblazing chef who has redefined the boundaries of vegan cuisine in Switzerland and around the world. She was born and raised in Spain to Moroccan parents and far removed from the culinary world, she studied and worked as a software developer until she was 24 years old. Zizi however had a burning passion for cooking simmering within her, that led her to quit her stable job at 24 years old and embark on an extraordinary adventure under the guidance of some of the world's most renowned chefs, including the likes of Daniela Soto-Innes, Andreas Caminada, Massimo Bottura, and Dan Barber. But Zizi didn't stop there. Over the past 4 years, after she came back from New York. Zizi has open three plant-based restaurants here in Zurich: KLE, DAR and COR. After only two years in business, Zizi's work has earned her prestigious recognition, including the first vegan chef in Switzerland to be awarded both a red and a green Michelin star, and she has also been named a 'Hospitality Pioneer' by The World's 50 Best's 50 Next list. She is also the author of her own cook book called “The Taste of Love”, which was nominated for Germany's best Vegan cookbook. Zizis journey is a compelling tale of transformation and marked by her relentless pursuit of culinary excellence, her dedication to sustainable practices, and her commitment to challenging the status quo within the restaurant industry. --- CHAPTERS: (00:00) Intro - Zineb Hattab (02:44) From Software Developer to Chef (18:39) Attitude of Excellence and Passion (25:25) Working with Andreas Caminada (28:12) The Brutal Kitchens of New York (37:23) Becoming the Person you need to be (46:07) Opening Restaurant Klee in Switzerland (53:48) Reasons for Going Vegan (58:16) Creating the Menu for a Michelin-Star Restaurant (01:05:59) Values & Life Philosophy (01:11:26) Behavioral Change (01:14:34) Knowledge is Power (01:19:00) Meaning of Life (01:23:04) Challenge: Take an Inventory of what you buy --- LINKS & RESSOURCES: Restaurant KLEE Restaurant DAR Restaurant COR

Climate action has historically had a gender-neutral lens, but this lack of intentionality has actually negatively impacted women, says gender and climate researcher Zineb Sqalli. Using real-world, gender-equal programs as examples Sqalli offers solutions for advancing both sustainability and gender equality – at the same time. After the talk, Modupe shares ways organizations can increase gender diversity and promote inclusion.
Artist Zineb Sedira records cultural and postcolonial connections between Algeria, France, Italy, and the UK from the 1960s, featuring films, rugs, and radical magazines from her personal archive. Dreams Have No Titles (2022) is Zineb Sedira's love letter to cinema, the classic films of her childhood in Paris, coming of age in Brixton in London, and ‘return' to Algiers - three cities between which the artist lives and practices. Born in 1963, the year after Algeria achieved independence from French colonial rule, her and her family's diasporic story is central to her practice. Zineb recalls her first encounters with 'militant cinema', and international co-productions like the Golden Lion-winning The Battle of Algiers (1966). She shares her decision to represent France at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, controversial reactions from French media and society, and solidarity from her radical contemporaries and women, like Françoise Vergès, Sonia Boyce, Latifa Echakhch, Alberta Whittle, and Gilane Tawadros. We discuss the legacy of her work in the selection of Julien Creuzet, the first person of Caribbean descent and from the French overseas territories to represent France at the Venice Biennale in 2024. Zineb shares how personal histories contribute to collective memory, subverting ideas of ‘collection', and using museum and gallery spaces to make archives more accessible. With orientalist tapestries and textiles - her ‘feminist awakening' - we discuss how culture can both perpetuate political and colonial hierarchies, and provide the possibility to ‘decolonise oneself'. From her academic research in the diaspora, Zineb suggests how she carried much knowledge in her body as lived experience, detailing her interest in oral histories (and podcasts!), as living archives. With Nina Simone, Miriam Makebe, and Archie Shepp, performers at the Pan-African Festival in Algiers (1969), she shows her love of jazz and rock music, played with her community of squatters and fellow students from Central Saint Martins. Finally, we see how the meaning of her participatory works change as they travel and migrate between global audiences, and institutions and funding in Algiers today, via aria, her research residency for artists. Zineb Sedira: Dreams Have No Titles runs at the Whitechapel Gallery in London until 12 May 2024. A free Artist and Curator Talk (with some of Zineb's ‘tribe') takes place at the Gallery on 11 April 2024. and the film version of the work shows at Tate Britain in London until September 2024. Zineb Sedira: Let's Go On Singing! ran at the Goodman Gallery in London until 16 March 2024.

Zineb Mouhyi is the co-founder of two charitable organizations, YouthxYouth & the Weaving Lab. YouthxYouth is a movement to radically reimagine the future of education with the goal of accelerating the process of young people influencing, designing, and transforming their education. The Weaving Lab is a global community of practice with the mission of advancing the field of weaving, understood as the practice of interconnecting ideas, people, projects, organizations, places, and ecologies to support systems change. Zineb is also a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology and Social Change at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) where she collaboratively explores the question: How might we facilitate a planetary transition toward systems that serve all life? In this episode, we explore the death of the old system and the birth of the new: how can the older generations become the allies the younger generations need? How can we explore together what it is to live in the wreckage of a dying system and how can we be part of the emergence of something new, generative and flourishing? Because Zineb is deeply involved in education systems and how they might change, we explore how current education is often designed to facilitate control, to deliver workers who follow rules and orders, not lively activists who think for themselves. From here, we delve into the ways young people can reclaim their own education and mould it to serve the world that could be woven into being, not the one that is dying; how they can shift from One Truth thinking to the understanding of many truths; from linear concepts to systemic thinking, to the ways we might create toolkits to untangle ourselves from the depradations of capitalism. We explore ways to leapfrog change, to put people, project and places at the heart of a global community of practice, to move out of the logic of separation into the logic of connection. This is a conversation grounded in living practice of the ideals Accidental Gods endeavours to promote: finding ways to be the change, so that we might birth a new future we'd be proud to leave to the generations that come after us... but really talking to those younger than us and finding what they need and how we can help them.
