AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
In today's podcast, MultiFunding President Lynn Ozer, aka SBA Queen, and I talk to Marissa Levin, a five-time, 30-year entrepreneur, speaker, best-selling author, mindset expert, and globally recognized growth and spiritual strategist. In today's episode, she tells us about her latest venture, I5 Conscious Leadership, a leadership education and consulting firm guided by a mission to elevate the consciousness of the world through leadership. "At the heart of all of us is a beautiful spirit, and my spirit is definitely one that is here to uplift and empower others," she said. "My lifetime legacy mission – LLM – is to empower 1 billion people to live their most joyful lives. And I do that through the work that I do, through 30 years of entrepreneurship of helping people move past their self limiting beliefs, their deeply ingrained patterns that hold them back, and really step into their highest potential and remember who they are." The impetus for this mission goes back 30 years to when she branched out on her own after working for a man who capped her value way below her worth, despite her education and how much money she was bringing into the company. She started her first business, Information Experts, a strategic communications and education firm. She launched the firm as a solopreneur with a $35,000 contract and grew the organization to approximately $14 million in revenue and 75 employees until she exited in 2012. The model for her latest business, I5 Conscious Leadership, is intention, identity, integrity, insight, and inspiration. "The first thing is you have to create a baseline, you have to know what you're working with," she said. "We start with an assessment of the organization in terms of where they are with their leadership. So many of the problems that can be avoided come from having the courage and the awareness to do the work to bridge the gap between how the leaders see themselves and how the employees see themselves." The gap leads to disengagement, which according to research through Gallup and other sources, is high. The research finds that only 21% of employees are engaged at work, 90% of employees are fully miserable and 60% of employees are emotionally detached. Using her model, her organization has helped CEOs select and implement highly effective advisory boards, which is essential for any business looking to grow exponentially. She is also the author of My Company Rocks: 8 Secrets to a Growth-Driven Culture and a contributor to You at Work: Unlocking Human Potential at the Workplace. She is also a leadership columnist for Inc. Magazine. Inspired to start her company because she worked for someone who didn't value her. She wasn't going to make any more money working for the company she was with, and she knew she was worth so much more, so she decided she needed to start her own company. Marissa's masters degree was in Human Resources and Organizational Development. The company she built had to pivot multiple times in order to stay relevant. When she launched the company, the only place that people were learning were in classrooms. She took that online by developing user guides, online help systems, and materials for instructor-led material. John Chamber, the CEO at the time at CISCO, announced that e-learning would be the “killer application” of the internet, and Marissa had to change her business overnight. In order to become what the market needed, but still be true to who they were, they had to become a web-based training company. That required her to bring on a lot of creative talent and allow them to expand their offerings into different fields. When social media really started to take a foothold, Marissa knew that it was going to change everything. Where traditionally the CEO of a company controlled all messaging, once everyone in the company could make a LinkedIn or Facebook page, it began to flatten organizations because everyone in the company had a voice. Why is building community in organizations and in life so critical? One of the most important factors for a successful life is to belong to multiple communities. It creates a feeling of belonging. One of the ways this gets applied to the corporate world is to build an advisory board made up of people from different communities. Marissa eventually wrote a book, Built to Scale, around the power of advisory boards. In that book, she introduced the SCALE Model, which stands for Select, Compensate, Associate, Leverage, and Evaluate, Evolve & Exit. It's a 5-phase model that leads a business owner through the process of how to strategically and intentionally select the advisors around them based on the holes and goals of their organization. This is what each phase looks like: -Select: Analyze your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as it relates to your advisory board. Be intentional about who you are bringing in to fill in those holes and reach those goals. -Compensate: You need to show your advisors that you value what they do and are willing to make an investment, whether that's cash, trade, or stock. -Associate: How you associate with your advisors, including legally (non-compete, NDA, etc.) and process of integration. -Leverage: This is all the different ways you can take advantage of your advisory board. There are over 70 of these in the book, and there are even more than that if you can get creative. -Evaluate, Evolve, and Exit: Arrange to revisit each advisors involvement, evolve your board as your company grows, and if you find you've outgrown an advisor, make sure to give them a gracious and grateful exit. Just like communities are important to us as individuals, advisory boards act as a place for diverse opinions from different communities to come together and improve upon each other. Use the SCALE model above, as well as the tips in her book, to build the advisory board that can blow up your business growth. Every culture needs to be intentional. Establishing your values starts with understanding that you are a leader as a parent, and that you are always being observed by your children. Always being honest as a parent is the foundation of integrity for your family. It all starts with us leading out with our example of living our values. I've been thinking a lot about this concept of being goal-oriented and how this is what having a family culture is all about. When you have a set vision for your family, then you have to set goals to achieve those ends. Becoming goal-oriented means getting clear on that vision, getting clear on why you do what you do, and setting clear boundaries for how to achieve those goals. Marissa talks a lot about being very values-centered, and that she would reinforce their goals and vision by reinforcing their values. I also think that there is something to this when it comes to culture in general. I recently read a book that discusses poverty culture, and how often those in poverty cannot see into long-term ends because they need to tackle their immediate problems. While my family is far from being in poverty, I feel that I often catch myself getting distracted by the immediate crisis that I forget about the long-term gains of staying focused on a larger goal. I will likely post an episode on this next week, so I won't go into it too much here. I just think this is something that is very important for developing our family culture: our beliefs, our mindset, and our habits filter through to become our culture. Ideas for Board of Director’s Compensation Every once in a while, a newspaper or a business magazine publishes an article exposing overinflated salaries of board members. While it may be true for some big corporations, the same cannot be said for the rest. Companies have different options on how to compensate their board members other than handing over a colossal sum of money or equity in the company. There are two major ways companies compensate their board members; either through equity or cash compensation. It is important that a company compensate board members in a manner that promotes their long-term interests and goals. We had an in-depth discussion with some well-experienced board members, and examined the pros and cons of both ways of compensating advisory boards or board of directors compensation. Compensating with Equity While researching her book, Marissa Levin, an expert on boards, came across a long-standing attorney and compensation expert. There are four different ways to use equity as board member’s compensation and according to this compensation expert: “Never give more than one quarter to one half of one percent to each board member you have.” A hazard of compensating with equity arises when board members leave the company. Marissa advises, “Put in a one year agreement with a restricted stock clause that allows you to buy back that stock, basically at a penny, in the event that you roll off that board.” Because the last thing a company wants is to give a large portion of equity to somebody who only works part-time for them. And if that board member doesn’t work out, then the company has someone walking around outside the company who owns a large portion of stock with no interest in the organization. Another thing for companies to consider is that you should be very prudent with the stock. This is something start-ups should especially consider because they usually have very little revenues so they cannot pay the board member very much or at all and, as a result, allot 5- 6% equity as the board member’s compensation. Although initially that might not seem to be a big amount, but as the company grows that small percentage can amount to a large sum. Like Marissa says, “If you build a company to $5, $10, $15, $20, $30, $50 million dollars, that’s a lot of money to be giving to somebody basically ‘cart blanche’.” Monetary Compensation Jeff Thompson has served in the board of directors for 10 years at Edelbrock Corporation. He was also a member of the executive, compensation and audit committees. Talking about compensating public board of directors, Jeff explained that they do things a bit differently. “We paid every member a fee for the quarterly meeting. It wasn’t a large amount of money but we also covered all their expenses,” said Jeff. The expenses included travel expenses, as the company had people coming in from all over the country. An additional perk that public boards had was a small pool of stock for the board members, which amounted to 1-2% of the company. The money was vested over a 5-7 year period to ensure long-term loyalty from its board members. Jeff said, “In order to earn the stock, you had to have long-term plans and goals with the company. So if you left early, you didn’t get much of anything.” In the event a board member rolled off the board due to term limits, since they had earned that investment, they would have the right to either to keep the stock or sell it back to the company. It’s important that you let go of board members in a way that doesn’t leave hard feelings between either party. Marissa said, “The most important thing you can do is keep the doors open and never burn any bridges because you don’t know if you might want them back at some later date or they could refer you to another advisor.” In her company, she sets up an ‘exit interview’ to make sure that there is closure in a professional manner so that everybody feels good about the experience.

Ties into the idea that if you are faithful with little you'll be blessed with alot There is a cycle that can develop where you more you are grateful the more you'll receive and the more you'll be grateful. What does the Bible say about gratefulness and thanksgiving? 1 Thes. 5:18 - give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Personal growth experts, life coaches, etc. are all emphasizing gratefulness, and there is a reason it works - because that's how God made us! Philippians 4:12 - I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. If you're in a tough season and need something to be thankful for, Psalms 139:14 - I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. You are created by God He loves you He made a way for you to spend eternity with him through his son Jesus All of the Earthly blessings God has given are temporary and can be taken away at any time, so putting all our worth/value/hope in those things is a mistake. Put your hope in Him! Closing Don't just give thanks once per year on Thanksgiving Use today as a reason to start a 21 or 30 day challenge to start each day being grateful I'm thankful for you the listener!
