Furry Friday With Maura Davies and Faraz Khan Happy Furry Friday! Maura Davies is here to talk about SPCA of Texas Pet Caring For Pets In Freezing Temperatures. Faraz Khan is here to talk about how to reduce scarring. So let’s get started! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! Caring For Pets In Freezing Temperatures Bernadette talks about a cat that her daughter found dead where she feeds a colony of stray cats. Bernadette's daughter took the deceased cats to the vet to be identified for gender and and chip. His name was Willie and he was only ten months old. Willie froze to death. The cat's real owners contacted Bernadette's daughter and the owners did not want the ashes. It was very sad, but rather a grim reminder to keep your animals inside. Symptoms of animals suffering from hypothermia is shivering, pale grey gums, lethargy, dilated pupils, and collapsing. If your dog or cat has any of these symptoms, take them to the vet immediately. Please keep your animals inside. Dogs sensitive to cold should be kept inside with quick potty breaks outside. The small dogs and short haired breeds benefit from a doggy jacket that helps to keep their core warm. Booties may also be a good idea as lots of heat escapes through a dogs foot pads. With cats, please keep them inside or if they or indoor outdoor allow them a shelter like the ones here. Trap-Neuter-Return is the humane and effective approach for stray and feral cats. Now in practice for decades in the US after being proven in Europe, scientific studies show that Trap-Neuter-Return improves the lives of feral cats, improves their relationships with the people who live near them, and decreases the size of colonies over time. Faraz Khan Faraz Khan is a former computer scientist turned longevity educator, speaker and biohacker. Seeing his parents age before his eyes prompted Faraz to dive headfirst into the world of anti-aging and longevity. Faraz turned from helping large media, life sciences and pharma companies to helping everyday people beat back the scourge of aging. He launched his podcast "Anti-Aging Hacks" in 2019 where he interviews the top minds in longevity, anti-aging and health. Faraz is also the host of a yearly Anti-Aging Summit. How To Reduce Scarring Faraz Khan suffered a horrible oil incident at 8 years old that made him form a large scar. Faraz discovered that over the past 15 years, all the scientific advancements, studies of older populations and a vastly improved understanding of our biology, have resulted in exciting information on how to slow down the aging process today – and turn back our biological clock by many years, and get back the energy, skin, hormones we had many years ago. Theres different kinds of scars that must all be treated differently. Keloids and hypertrophic scars are caused by cutaneous injury and irritation, including trauma, insect bite, burn, surgery, vaccination, skin piercing, acne, folliculitis, chicken pox, and herpes zoster infection. Notably, superficial injuries that do not reach the reticular dermis never cause keloidal and hypertrophic scarring. Once your wound is healed and a scar is formed, keeping it hydrated is also extremely important, especially if you are attempting to reduce the appearance of your scar. Keeping your wound hydrated will help your body produce a more flexible scar that is able to be reduced in the future. Hydration is very important for healing scars. Drink water and Alsop supplement with silicone gel sheets. It's best to address a scar before they heal completely. But, Faraz says you can heal old scars, even 20-30 years old too! Thank You! A big thank you to our guests, Maura Davies and Faraz Khan with anti-aging and scarring hacks! To donate to the SPCA Texas,

Happy Furry Friday! We’re discussing the “Let’s Fix This” free spay and neuter program with Maura Davies of the SPCA of Texas, and Monica Berg, author of “”Rethink Love”, teaches us how to be our own Valentine this year.  Maura Davies Maura Davies, Vice President of Communications for the SPCA of Texas, discusses “Let’s Fix This”, a free spay and neuter program for over 20 zip codes in the Dallas area. Dallas has had a huge issue with dog bites and stray dogs in certain areas of the city. The SPCA commissioned a study of the areas and concluded that a free spay and neuter program would help lessen the number of bites and strays, but affordable veterinary services weren’t readily available. Since the program began, the SPCA has spayed and neutered over 55,000 dogs and cats. Education is important, but Davies says that networking has been key to the programs success, building trust and partnerships within the groups in the areas where the services are needed most. It’s a labor of love for everyone involved. And, this Valentine’s Day, Davies reminds us that chocolate is bad for our pets. Under no circumstances should you give your dog chocolate. If they get into some by accident, watch for any unusual behaviors and call your vet for advice. To learn more about the “Let’s Fix This” free spay and neuter program, visit lets-fix-this.org Monica Berg- Be Your Own Valentine Monica Berg joins us for Valentine’s to give us some great advice on how to be our own Valentine. Berg is the chief communications officer of The Kabbalah Centre International and the author of “Rethink Love” and “Fear is Not an Option”. Berg says we aren’t really aware of our own past and our own story. Self-knowledge and honesty are so important before you can be in a healthy relationship. We sometimes rely on the other person to fulfill what we’re missing, when we need to look within ourselves.  We need to understand that a successful life is a messy one. Women can be very critical about themselves because they are expected to be successful in every aspect of their lives; education, home life, relationships career and more. Women seek validation externally and need to only look for their own approval. If we base relationships on external elements like what the other person has, we’re setting ourselves up for failure. If you’re feeling out of balance, anxious, angry or bitter, you aren’t in tune with yourself. Introspection is key. Ask yourself what you want and don’t be afraid to admit it. Check in with yourself every day and ask if you’re OK ad if not, what do you need? Like attracts like, so whoever you want to attract, become that person. Thank You! Thank you to Monica Berg and Maura Davies for coming on One Life Radio today! And, don’t forget to visit lets-fix-this.org, the SPCA’s free spay and neuter program to see if you qualify, or find ways you can help. Thank you to all of our One Life Radio listeners. Our pets just ate their delicious Castor & Pollux Pet Food for lunch! As the leader and maker of America’s #1 organic pet food, Castor & Pollux has set a new standard with the most comprehensive portfolio of purposeful pet food. So, let’s get started! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! Pet Grooming and Care Constant urination cane caused by many things! It could be for parking scent, or to let predators know that they are there too. When you noice a change in you pet’s urinary habits, take them to the vet. If your pet typically goes pee all at one time, but now that start to pee a little at a time all the time, take them to the vet. If you notice changes in your pet’s behavior, they are typically trying to tell you something. Dogs are typically way better at letting their humans know that they don’t feel well. Cats are masters at hiding illnesses.  You should bathe your dog about once a month. Overbathing can dry out their skin and lead to dog ecxcema. Unless they are super stinky, do it once a month. Cats rarely need baths. Cats are great a grooming themselves, especially if they are indoor cats only. Remember to never use human shampoo or conditioner. Pooch or Feline specific products only! How often you brush depends on the breed of dog or cat. If your dog and cat has long/medium hair, you should be brushing them a few times a week. Dr. RuthAnn Lobos and Castor & Pollux Dr. RuthAnn Lobos is lead veterinarian for Merrick PetCare, the makers of our Furry Friday sponsor, Castor & Pollux organic and responsibly-sourced pet food. Dr. Lobos is a practicing veterinarian with more than 15 years of experience in the pet food industry. She loves sharing the power of pet nutrition with colleagues, pet parents and friends. In her undergraduate studies, Dr.RuthAnn pursued an animal science degree. She went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from Louisiana State University and became a certified canine rehabilitation therapist. RuthAnn is an avid marathoner and triathlete and proud mama to three active pups, Rigolets, Stella and Finn. Pet Resolutions Part 2 Today we are doing pet resolutions part 2! There are a lot of fun things to do around your house with your pets! Dr. RuthAnn and Junior tell Bernadette that they both play hide and seek with their pets! Talk to your pets. They might not be able to understand you, but having them hear your voice is soothing. Car rides are great, but you have to do it in a safe way. The safest way to transport your pups is to secure them with their very own seat belts or dog car harnesses. Not only does a seatbelt confine your furry friend, but it keeps them safe in the event of an accident. Dr. Ruthann Lobos recommends taking your furry family member into the vet for a wellness check once a year. Once your animal is older, age 7-8, she suggests going to the vet twice a year. Be observant. Id your pets and always microchip your pets. Microchips are the best way to never lose your pet for good. Thank You! The SPCA is offering free dog spay/neutering in South Dallas! Thank you for being a responsible pet owner and scheduling a spay/neuter appointment! Spaying and neutering pets helps them lead long, happy lives. He has been working in healthcare for almost 20 years and has been published in numerous articles and appeared on various media outlets. Ryan lives his life authentically and inspires others to have the courage to live their lives to their truest potential. The US has one of the highest rate of people with additions compared to other countries. Around only 10% of people receive treatment for their addictions. Ryan says this is because most people do not recognize that they have a problem. Also, timing to take 30 days out of your life and get better is not always attainable for everyone. American culture is certainly one that requires people to feel that they need to take something to relieve the stress of it all. A successful addiction treatment plan addresses all the problems, not just the substance being abused. Recovery is returning to normalcy, so recovery means hope again. Happy Furry Friday! Happy Furry Friday! It’s a furbulous day here in Dallas, Texas! We are proud to say we have partnered with Castor & Pollux Pet Food! As the leader and maker of America’s #1 organic pet food, Castor & Pollux has set a new standard with the most comprehensive portfolio of purposeful pet food. At the half we have a wonderful guest, Stacy Sutton Kerby from The Texas Humane Legislation Network talking about abolishing puppy mills! But first up, we have Maura Davies of The SPCA Texas, so let's get started! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! How Pets Support Our Mental Health Bernadette says that having a pet in the family home can teach kids empathy, responsibly, and more! Children with ADHD can benefit from working with and keeping a pet. Taking charge of the jobs on a pet care schedule, such as feeding, walking and bathing, helps a child learn to plan and be responsible. Walking a dog often leads to conversations with other dog owners and this helps owners to stay socially connected and less withdrawn. People who have more social relationships and friendships tend to be mentally healthier. Having a pet in the house increases the positive energy! It’s also no surprise that 98% of pet owners consider their pet to be a member of the family. Not only are people happier in the presence of animals, they’re also healthier. In a survey of pet owners, 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements from pet ownership, and 75% of pet owners reported a friend’s or family member’s mental health has improved from pet ownership. The simple act of petting a cat or a dog can reduce stress related hormones and lower your heart rate! If you have anxiety and suffer from panic attacks, you can begin to pet your animal to help aid in preventing a big anxiety attack. Stacy Sutton Kerby Stacy’s tenure with Texas Humane Legislation Network, or THLN, began in 2012 with fundraising and grassroots organizing. Since then, Stacy has worn several hats for THLN, including Volunteer Coordinator, Director of Operations, and Legislative Liaison. Stacy served as THLN’s Interim Executive Director in 2015 when they successfully passed HB 593 – the Mandatory Canine Encounter Training Law. In 2019, Stacy launched Safekeeping – a program supporting the pets of people exiting crises. She received her Master’s in Public Affairs from the LBJ School in August 2019, and returned to THLN in 2020 as the Director of Government relations. Stacy volunteers in her local community with the Austin Humane Society and PALS – a program supporting the pets of Meals On Wheels clients Texas Human Legislation Network Fight To Abolish Puppy Mills In Texas The Texas legislature is preparing to gut the state program that prevents unregulated puppy mills. Since 2011, the Texas Dog & Cat Breeder Act has given the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) the right to regulate the conditions in large-scale animal breeding facilities. Without this Act, unregulated, large scale breeding facilities could likely become inhumane puppy mills producing dogs for profit in the cruelest conditions. We must remind Texas legislators of the importance of this Program. Elimination of the Program means zero regulations for those profiting off puppies. The absence of even the most basic minimum care standards will lead to horrific puppy mills. This will be causing thousands of dogs and cats will suffer a lifetime of neglect. THLN’s goals are to protect this incredibly important Program and then fix the existing loopholes to strengthen it. NOW is the time for action. Please help us change the fate of thousands of animals in commercial breeding facilities by signing and sharing our Petition today. When you sign our Petition,

Happy Furry Friday! Happy Furry Friday! The week flew by so fast, it’s crazy! It’s a furbulous Friday here in Dallas, Texas! Our pets just ate their delicious Castor & Pollux Pet Food for lunch! As the leader and maker of America’s #1 organic pet food, Castor & Pollux has set a new standard with the most comprehensive portfolio of purposeful pet food. Today we have a great show in store for you with two animal loving women, Maura Davies and Dr. RuthAnn Lobos! Let’s get started! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! Keeping Pets Safe During The Cold Winter Holidays Maura reminds that people should use common sense when thinking of this - if you are cold, they are cold. Pets are just as vulnerable to sickness like colds and pneumonia. Maura says that if a pet must stay outside, which is not advised, it should be a raised weather-proof area with the entrance facing away from the wind. Don't skip giving a bath in the winter - make sure if the pet is going back outside that they are completely dry, you can use a touch test or a smell test ( there is truth to the smelling like a wet dog statement ). The added wetness makes it colder for the animals and pets can take hours to dry. Dogs and Cats absolutely need more food during the winter months. The colder they are the more calories they need. Regular vet checkups can help monitor the food intake that they need. More calories taken in = more warmth for the pets. It's important to spay and neuter your animals. It helps your pets live longer and healthier lives. It can help behavior issues and avoid dangerous situations like wandering off or bad confrontations with other animals. Please spay and neuter your animals! Dr. RuthAnn Lobos Dr. RuthAnn Lobos is lead veterinarian for Merrick PetCare, the makers of our Furry Friday sponsor, Castor & Pollux organic and responsibly-sourced pet food. The 12 Dangers of Christmas For Our Pets Give your animals a safe space during the holidays. Like humans, our pets can get overwhelmed as well! Pets are prone to get out if outdoor events involve the gates and doors to their area. Pets should have a safe space if there are guests over. Dr. RuthAnn Lobos also mentions white noise for pets to keep them calm. The hosts should talk to the guests about having the pets in the area and the importance of having an appropriate interaction with the pet. Make sure the tree is secured. Consider using plastic ornaments instead of glass to prevent breaking. Have the tree in its own safe room or use a baby gate to prevent pets from being around the tree. Mistletoe and Poinsettias are extremely dangerous to the GI tracts of cats! Lillies are deadly to cats. Most people don't know this! If you cat is exposed to Lillies in any form, drive them directly to the emergency animal hospital IMMEDIATELY! Thank You! Jonny Bowden is known as The Nutrition Myth Buster and is a nationally known expert on weight loss and health. He is the best-selling author of 15 books, including “The Great Cholesterol Myth” and “The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer.” He has a Masters degree in psychology, a PhD in holistic nutrition, and is board certified by the American College of Nutrition. His books include “Living Low Carb,” “Smart Fat,” “The Great Cholesterol Myth” and “The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth.” Information Overload: Low To Listen To Your Gut And Not The Media How do we make sense of all the information swirling around? Meats, vegetables, minimally processed foods in their natural state! Dr. Jonny says to not be afraid of foods with “high” cholesterol. Eat whole foods as they come! Bernadette thinks we have over complicated food. As a country that is obsessed with diet; we are so convoluted when it comes deciding what is good to eat. As far as COVID goes, we have to talk about it! Diabetic, Obese, and immune-compromised people are the most threatened when COVID strikes. The prime risk factor for heart disease that you can catch early is insulin problems! 100g of carbohydrates looks differently. A piece of bread could be 20 grams. An apple could be 8, but the apple contains fiber! The average American eats over 300 grams of carbohydrates a day! Your body responds to carbohydrates with the hormone insulin. Eat real foods! If Dr. Jonny could leave us with one piece of information, it would be to eat real, raw foods. Happy Furry Friday! It's a furbulous day here in Dallas, Texas! We are proud to say we have partnered with Castor & Pollux Pet Food! As the leader and maker of America’s #1 organic pet food, Castor & Pollux has set a new standard with the most comprehensive portfolio of purposeful pet food. We are sad to announce that Renaldo will be leaving us, but that we will have a new board operator starting Monday! We have a furry Friday in store for you with Marc Peralta of Best Friends Animal Society, so stick around. First up, Maura Davies of the SPCA Texas! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. SPCA Texas Rescues The FurBall went swell! The Furball raised over $330,000! The only way that the SPCA can continue to do what it does for animals, so don't forget to donate if you can. It's hurricane season, and the SPCA is gearing up to save animals just like they have in the past with hurricane Katrina and hurricane Harvey. Bernadette says don't get rid of your pets! So many people so carelessly give their animals away. How sad. The SPCA focuses on keeping animals in homes and out of shelters. The SPCA tries to identify the issues owners have surrounding why people would give their animal up and help them. There is a new approach to natural disaster animal rescues. They were having troubles before getting animals back to their owners after hurricanes because they were immediately just going into rescue. Now, the SPCA takes a difference approach where they work with the local groups and have a coordinated response. Bernadette points out that social media has helped some groups with animal adoption, but Maura says that social media has actually been detrimental. But, as for community building and bringing people together, social media has proven effective. Marc Peralta Marc Peralta is the Chief Program Officer for Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with nearly 3,000 animal welfare groups, Best Friends has regional centers across the country. They operate the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Prior to joining Best Friends, Marc served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He has also served as interim CEO for the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Best Friends Animal Society - Puppy Mill Awareness Today we are talking about puppy mills. Best Friends Animal Society thinks that there are upwards of 10,000 puppy mills in the US. With the use of the internet and Facebook puppy sales, puppy breeding is running rampant. Puppy mills are factory farms for dogs. The animals only get the bare minimum of care and are bred for profit for the human. It is not only dogs, cats get bred rapidly too! Any store or person who breeds animals should register with the federal government, but many don't. Please adopt and do not shop! If you do choose to purchase an animal, try and find the source. Get to as close to the "mill" as you can! If you think there is a puppy mill in your area, help your friends and family understand the ugly truth of puppy mills. Tell people that while a puppy mill puppy may need a nice home, the more money you give to puppy mills, the more you keep puppy mills going. They typically aren't illegal, so education is the best way to deter purchases. Only 3 states have completely banned puppy mills. California has actually banned typical puppy mills! Unfortunately there have been some loopholes, but the goal is to completely close all the loopholes and end puppy mill sales completely. Thank You A big thank you to our guests, Maura Davies and Marc Peralta. To donate to Best Friend Animal Society, click here! Every little bit counts.

Happy Furry Friday! It's our favorite day of the week! Happy Furry Friday everyone! We love our pets extra special on Fridays, so we sometimes give them a special Castor & Pollux treat! As the leader and maker of America’s #1 organic pet food, Castor & Pollux has set a new standard with the most comprehensive portfolio of purposeful pet food. Today we have two furry friend lovers, Maura Davies and Leah Backo of Dallas Animal Services, so stick around. Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! How Cats and Dogs Communicate Dogs and cats can get their signals crossed. Tail positions are a great place to start! A wagging tail on a dog means it is happy! A wagging tail on a cat means "I am ready to pounce. Stay Away." So, If cat sees a dog wagging it's tailing coming towards him, the cat may swat. Dogs and Cats greet each other differently too! If you've ever seen two cats meet, they will typically boop noses and sniff each other's breath! With dogs, you know it, they sniff butts. But sniffing is like sniffing a bar code for dogs! Dogs and cats also vocalize for different reasons! Cats meow almost always to talk to humans! Dogs however, if they hear cats meowing, think that the cat is talking to them. When introducing animals, let the animals get to know each others smell through the door. It is all about smell for animals, so be patient. Respect your animals boundaries. Dogs and cats both communicate with their ears! This might be a little more subtle. Cats typically put their ears back when they’re scared, while dogs put their ears back when they’re aggressive. And the opposite! Animal relationships are anomalies. Weird animal friendships are never predictable! If you ever have questions, reach out to an animal behavioralist! Both dogs and cats blink often and softly when they are content. Both dogs and cats will not blink and have a “stand off” if you will for a power move! Check out these video for more information on animal behaviors. Click here for cats and here for dogs! Leah Backo Leah is the Public Information Coordinator for the City of Dallas and Dallas Animal Services, or DAS. The Dallas Animal Services is on a mission to lead the nation in compassionate care of animals while finding positive outcomes for all placeable pets through innovative shelter operations and community engagement. As the third-largest dog and cat intake shelter in the country, DAS believes they can be the largest shelter in the nation with a sustainable live release rate of above 90% and is on track to do so for fisccal Year 2020. The biggest initiative for DAS is Dallas90, a community outreach campaign by Dallas Animal Services designed to engage the community in their lifesaving vision. Dallas90 Initiative DAS offers many services! DAS also responds to all animal related 911 and 311 calls in Dallas County! This includes, pet rehoming support, animal surrender, wildlife rescue resources, and more! The City of Dallas does great work within city limits. Bernadette asks Leah what to do if you see a lost or wandering dog! DAS handles every dog or cat case by case. There used to be a very bad stray dog problem in the City Of Dallas, and after a very bad loss of human life at the hands of stray dogs, the DAS made a change. Animal Services are no longer just a code compliance part of parks and recreation, but their own branch of local government. Please microchip your animals! Microchips are a city ordinance, and a much more reliable resource than a dog tag. Also, it is against city ordinances to have your dogs run free, or to be off leash. Leash those pups and microchip all your pets! Nationwide, the standard for a shelter be considered a no kill shelter is for the live release rate of incoming animals to be above 90%.

Happy Furry Friday! What a furbulous day on this furry Friday! TGIF! Bernadette and The One Life Radio had a crazy full week, but we wouldn’t change it for anything! We love what we do! Everyone at OLR loves animals, so furry Friday is our favorite! Today, we have Maura Davies, Marc Peralta, and Alison Sawyer Current.  Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! Pet’s Paw Pads Pet paw pads are the little beans that are on the bottom of your pet’s paws! Paw pads are hairless pigmented skin that is an overlay of fat and tissue. They can be rough or smooth depending on your “ruff” boy or girl, or your more calm companion. Animal paw pads can be compared to shoes with insoles. They provide traction, cushion, and help them walk more comfortably!  Just like human feet, animal paw pads can get cuts, scratches, or even infections! Look out for packs, cuts, bleeding or swelling. Look for excessive licking on your animals feet. Bernadette suggests soaking your animals paw pads in epsom salt as a cheaper and holistic alternative! Just be able to always ask your veterinarian first before treating your pet holistically.  Really be cautious of how hot the surface your dog is walking on. If the concrete or pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for theirs! Go for walks early in the day or later in the evening, but still feel the pavement. Look in to some dogs shoes to protect your furry friends feet! Check out this funny video of dogs trying to walk with shoes on for your daily laugh!  Marc Peralta Marc Peralta is the Senior Director of National Mission Advancement for Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with nearly 3,000 animal welfare groups, Best Friends has regional centers across the country and operate the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Prior to joining Best Friends, Marc served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, as well as interim CEO for the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Financial Aid For Pet Care Marc says Happy Friday. Unfortunately the unemployment rate has skyrocketed. Best Friends wants to help pet owners and shelters as much as they can. From food pantries to rehoming, Best Friends is doing everything they can do to keep pets and families together. To apply for services and aide for their furry family member, reach out to your local animal shelter first. Even if the shelter itself can not Gove anything, they know who to connect you with. In times like this, do not be afraid to reach out to a friend or family member, or even nextdoor or facebook. Marc and Bern know how hard rehoming can be, but be proactive. Use your own circle first but don’t be afraid to reach out.  Best Friends works with animal surrenders. Best Friends strives to be a community resource and an educator. People lose their homes and jobs, and rehoming your animal does not mean that you are a poor animal owner. The most responsible thing to do is to take the best action for your animal’s well being. Sometimes that means rehoming, and that’s not always bad.  If you or someone you know is struggling financially with animal care, call 3-11 or 2-11 for community resources. Marc says every community is different. If you have even the smallest bit of extra money, please consider buying a bag of cat or dog food and delivering it to your local shelter.  More Financial Aid Tips From Marc Peralta Financial aid can make a world of difference for pet owners who have fallen on hard times but love their animals. It's Furry Friday! Maura Davies of the SPCA explains our cat's odd habits.  And, for the first time on One Life Radio, we welcome Mark Stephens from Australia. He brings over 50 years experience in meditation and hypnosis and he's walking us through a 1-minute meditation! Funny Cat Tricks Maura says it’s a compliment when cats rub up on your leg or lap. When cats expose their belly, they trust you. Be careful for the “bear trap”, though, when you touch their belly and they grab your hand with both feet and hands, claws and all!  Bernadette recommends using white vinegar to keep cats going in their litter box and not on furniture or clothes. When cats twitch their ears is a sign of anxiety. Pointed upright, they are fine, when ears are back, they are suffering from anxiety or agitated. Remember to spay and neuter your pet! Visit spca.org for info. Self-Hypnosis and a 1-Minute Meditation Mark Stephens is an Australian Health Retreat owner, the Author of Think Slim, Think Quit and creator of the MindFree app. Trained by traditional Japanese masters, Tibetan monks and Chinese Tai Chi teachers, Stephens is a meditation expert, hypnotherapist and Tai Chi instructor with 40 years of experience. Bernadette asks what his favorite mindful method is, and he says Tai Chi. According to Stephens, it's  like Kung-fu on valium,  really a moving meditation. Mark also is an expert in hypnotherapy. He says people have misconceptions about hypnotherapy because of tv shows and sideshows. When used for therapeutic reasons, hypnotherapy can help block out anxiety and stress while resetting the mind. It’s like reading a good book, daydreaming or driving somewhere and you don’t remember the trip. Today, too many people are stuck in trances of “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t stop smoking” or whatever. Hypnosis can change that for the positive. Listen to the full show to hear Mark walk us through a one-minute meditation. To get his app, visit mindfreeapp.com. Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Happy Furry Friday! Happy Furry Friday everyone, we made it another week! We have a fabulous, furry, fun filled show for you all today! We have three admirable, fantastic women moving mountains for animal welfare. These three women are Furry Friday ambassadors! Everyone have a fantastic weekend, and remember to give your furry family member some extra pets and treats! Maura Davies of SPCA Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications for the SPCA of Texas. Today, Maura is here to discuss more tips for summer pet safety. Some breeds are different from others when It comes to being able to sustain themselves outside in the heat. Brachia Systolic Breeds are a fancy word for dogs with little short pushed in noses. French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Mastiffs, Shitzus and more are the kinds of dogs that have trouble breathing! It is a hot one today, remember to keep your animals hydrated, as well as yourself! Watch out for heavy panting, excessive thirst, a bright red tongue, mucus membranes in jowls being grey, excessive drooling, and unsteadiness on your dog's feet! If you see these signs in your animals, bring them inside immediately and let them soak up that AC and shade! Cat's show similar signs as dogs when they are overheating, but cats are sneaky and hide symptoms... If you see any of these symptoms, call your vet immediately! Ingrid Newkirk of PETA It wouldn't be a Furry Friday without Ingrid Newkirk! Since founding PETA, president Ingrid Newkirk has grown the group into the world’s largest animal rights organization. Today, Ingrid is here to talk about certain coconut water brands using and abusing animals to harvest coconut water. Monkeys are kept enslaved as coconut picking machines for us humans! That is Horrible! Monkeys are trained with force to climb trees and gather coconuts to be turned into coconut water. Harmless Harvest is the best bet for cruelty free coconut water, so free of monkey slavery. Ingrid says to read your labels, and if you are not sure, look to PETA's website for a concise list of cruelty free brands to purchase, so you can avoid funding animal cruelty. Speak with your wallet and avoid giving your money to companies that enslave animals. Patti Dawson of Dallas Dogrrr Patti Dawson is here to wrap-up Furry Friday here at One Life Radio! There has been an increase in intakes at DallasDogrrr. There are many dogs left behind and in the most compromising situations who need help. DallasDogrrr currently has 276 animals in their care. If you or someone you know can qualify to foster, please do. Fostering an animal can help organizations like Dallas Dogrrr. By taking some responsibility off their paws, DallasDogrrr can tend to more animals in need! DallasDogrrr is launching virtual fostering for everyone who can not physically foster an animal. Virtual Fostering is just networking harder to place dogs and dogs who in need of the spotlight! Please continue to spay and neuter you pets so we can reduce the number of stray animals! Thank You One Life Radio, The SPCA, PETA, and DallasDogrrr are asking you to ADOPT DON'T SHOP. Hundreds of animals are euthanized daily. Any Euthanized animal could have made a beautiful companion, but sadly did not have the chance. Please adopt your next animal, and help us end unnecessary euthanasia for cats and dogs in shelters. If you would like to donate to DallasDogrrr so to help them save the animals in the most compromising of situations, click here! Thank you to all of our One Life Radio listeners. We truly appreciate each and every one of you, so If you’d like to hear more from One Life Radio, please subscribe to our podcast. Stephanie Toups also stops by to discuss the importance of air quality!  We have a big announcement! Castor and Pollox, number 1 organic purposeful pet food supplier in the US, has become our new furry Friday sponsor! We love Castor and Pollox, check out this link and start your furry friend on the best food on the market! Maura Davies - SPCA The SPCA is following social distancing guidelines to maintain animal care and adoption procedures! COVID-19 can't hold the SPCA back from their mission to prevent cruelty to animals! The Pet Resource Center is available and provides essentials like food and medicine more than 1000 pets that would otherwise not be able to get the care they need in this global pandemic! If you see something, say something! Together, we can prevent cruelty to animals. If you or someone you know needs assistance in keeping their pet healthy, click here for the Pet Rescue Center. Marc Peralta - Best Friends Animal Society Marc Peralta is We are making progress as a nation on reducing the number of animals being euthanized. Unfortunately, cats are disproportionately dying more than dogs. That's terrible! With Trap Neuter Return programs, we can reduce the number of cats being produced, and in turn, reduce the number of cats being euthanized. Best Friends connects with the community regularly to provide resources like free spay and neuter! Click here to find the support you or someone you know may need to keep their furry family member, so we can keep animal shelter numbers down. Together, we can save them all! Stephanie Toups Consumer advocate Stephanie Toups is here to discuss the importance of air quality in your home, and how to clean the air in your home! A simple tip is to use your hood vent in your home when you are cooking! If you don't have a hood vent, most microwaves have an air vent included. Stephanie suggests using essential oils for a multitude of reasons! Essential oils have antibacterial properties and are easy to implement in your home. Add a few drops of essential oil to your wool dryer balls for a simple change! Symptoms of breathing in toxic air in your home include structural damage to the lungs, rashes, and asthma. Yikes! Set a reminder in your phone and remind yourself to change your air filter in your home! A cute, safe addition to your home to help clean the air in your home is houseplants! Houseplants can be a safer alternative to typical paraffin candles. Stephanie says that little changes can add up to create a clean air home. Thank You Support Best Friends' Mission To End The Killing of Homeless Pets. A small donation can make such a huge difference in the life of an animal in need.   It's FURRY FRIDAY and Memorial Day Weekend! We've got Maura Davies of the SPCA of North Texas discussing virtual pet adoption, Gabrielle Reyes, aka "One Great Vegan" on veganism heading mainstream, and Cody Myler gives us first-hand tales from gym reopenings in Texas as COVID-19 restrictions lift. Virtual Pet Adoptions Maura Davies is here on “Furry Friday”, sponsored by Ned CBD, telling us how to virtually adopt a pet. You can now go online to adopt your next furry friend. Davies says you'll find detailed histories of each pet along with videos, health and behavioral issues and more. They will also set up one-on-one meetings for pets with special needs. The SPCA takes all of the same precautions with virtual pet adoption as they do with on-location adoptions. So, if you’re looking for a new furry friend this Furry Friday, check out their website and virtually adopt! And, visit NED Full-Spectrum Hemp Oils for their full product line that can be used for you and your pet. Is Plant-Based Eating Mainstream? Next, we have the “One Great Vegan”, Gabrielle Reyes, discussing if plant-based eating is going mainstream. Reyes is in the middle of preparing vegan fried chicken when we talk. What's in this fantastic recipe, you ask? You'll have to listen to the interview to find out. (teaser, sorry) Reyes became vegan after a college tailgate of burgers, hot dogs and more - all wrapped in bacon. She woke up ill the next day and knew she needed a change. Reyes had heard of veganism, and decided to try it. She’s never looked back. Reyes calls the COVID-19 epidemic “the end of meat”. Workers in factory farms are dying of the virus in record numbers and people are starting to take notice. Another reason veganism is going mainstream is the help from celebrities such as Beyonce and Billie Eilish. Oprah is launching a virtual wellness tour, including "Meatless Mondays". Reyes goes on to say that plant-based eating has everything we need, protein, vitamins, fats, etc. If you don’t follow a plant-based lifestyle, consider trying it for one day a week. We'd love to hear how it goes! Learn more about Gabrielle on her website onegreatvegan.com or on instagram @onegreatvegan. Opening Gyms After Quarantine Cody Myler talks about gyms reopening in Texas as restrictions are lifted. Myler owns NXT Rep Fitness, and he says it’s been a slow burn opening, but going well so far. We ask what's changed for gyms under the new rules. Myler lists a few examples, such as gloves are mandatory, but masks aren’t.  The showers and dressing rooms are off limits, but bathrooms are available. For those heading back to the gym for the first time, he recommends bringing water, hand sanitizer, clean gloves and towels. Also, come dressed to work out and shower at home before and after your workout. Myler's tip for those coming back; take it easy on your first workout. He's seen more than a few push hard the first day and suffer consequences later. Just be prepared for some soreness afterwards. Check out Cody's gym, NXT Rep Fitness on facebook, or visit his One Life Radio Expert Guest page. Thank You to our Military! Thanks to everyone for listening! Remember that you can adopt a furry friend through virtual pet adoptions! It's Memorial Day weekend, so we'll do a Best of on Monday. The team at One Life Radio wants to express our gratitude for all of the service members who lost their lives in combat. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to their families and friends. We appreciate, and are forever grateful, to our military men and women and the daily sacrifices they make for our life and liberty. Stay safe and happy this weekend!

Did you know there are certain things to look out for before you take a cute stray kitten home? You may think you are doing the right thing by picking up the sweet abandoned babe, but you could be doing more harm than good. Maura Davies tells us what precautions to take before taking a stray home because it may not be a stray at all. If a kitten is not weaned from its momma's milk, this could be a hard road for this little kitten! Remember, always spay & neuter, it keeps the population down and gives more great homes to shelter animals. Dr. Alvin Danenberg was given the diagnosis of IgA Kappa Light Chain Multiple Myeloma, which is cancer of the bone marrow. He is a nutritional periodontist and has always taken extremely great care of his body and his health. When he received this diagnosis in September of 2018 he began documenting his treatment in his blog. Dr. Danenberg is not taking the traditional route with treatment and he has been logging his progress through his blogs. Today he talks to us about the 3 components of his treatment and how they've been helping him. If you haven't heard his episode back in November, listen here. We are so grateful for Dr. Danenberg who is helping others fighting cancer learn some alternative methods. We hope you kick cancers A**!
