In the endless pursuit of balance in our lives, we often overlook the power within us to heal. Today, we welcome Dr. Gregory Scott Brown, a psychiatrist and author who champions the self-healing mind. Dr. Brown's journey into mental health and his book, "The Self-Healing Mind," stem from his personal struggle with depression in his early twenties. This pivotal experience led him to discover the transformative power of self-care, yoga, and spirituality, which eventually inspired his professional path.Dr. Brown's narrative is a testament to the power of self-awareness and proactive self-care. He candidly shares his initial struggles with depression and the serendipitous discovery of self-care practices that helped him heal. Now, as a psychiatrist, he emphasizes the importance of integrating evidence-based self-care with conventional treatments like medication and therapy. He passionately believes in the potential of self-care to complement professional treatments and help individuals achieve better mental health outcomes.Dr. Gregory Scott Brown discusses the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly among men. He highlights the cultural expectations that discourage vulnerability, making it difficult for men to seek help. This stigma is even more pronounced in communities of color, where mental health discussions are often taboo. Dr. Brown's openness about his own experiences aims to break these barriers and encourage more men to seek the help they need.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSIntegrating Self-Care into Daily Life: Dr. Brown outlines five pillars of self-care: sleep, spirituality, nutrition, breathwork, and movement. These practices are accessible and can significantly enhance mental health when integrated into daily routines.Embracing Vulnerability and Seeking Help: Dr. Brown underscores the importance of men embracing vulnerability and seeking help for mental health issues. Reducing stigma and fostering open discussions can lead to better mental health outcomes for everyone.Harnessing the Power of Mindfulness: Mindfulness, as Dr. Brown explains, involves conscious awareness and being present in the moment. This practice can quiet the mind, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.Dr. Brown elaborates on the physiological benefits of self-care practices. For instance, meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers blood pressure and reduces anxiety by flooding the brain with inhibitory neurotransmitters like GABA. Similarly, exercise increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which promotes optimal brain function and mental health. He also emphasizes the role of nutrition in mental health, citing the SMILES trial, which showed that a Mediterranean diet can reduce depression by lowering inflammation. Dr. Brown advocates for a balanced approach to nutrition, encouraging small, sustainable changes rather than drastic overhauls.Dr. Brown's discussion on spirituality highlights its broad scope beyond religious practices. Spirituality can involve connecting with oneself through meditation, connecting with others through altruism, or connecting with a higher power through prayer. These practices can quiet the default mode network in the brain, reducing perceptions of physical and emotional pain.In addressing burnout, Dr. Brown emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs and integrating self-care practices to prevent it from escalating into more severe mental health issues. He advises paying attention to functional impairments in daily life and seeking professional help when necessary. As we navigate the complexities of mental health, Dr. Brown's insights remind us of the power within ourselves to foster healing and balance. By embracing self-care, vulnerability, and mindfulness, we can unlock our potential for profound mental and emotional well-being.Please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Gregory Scott Brown.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

It's how we interact with each other, how we love the quality of our relationships. It relates to our emotional intelligence. And so I think it's important that as people think about how they can stay mentally healthy, that they're also thinking about these other factors that play such a very important role in how we live and act." On Movement “As a psychiatrist, I prescribe psychiatric medications in my practice every single week, but we can't ignore the power of self-care. And what I mean by that is, as I outline in the book, things like Sleep, Spirituality, Nutrition, Breath Work, and Moving Our Body, Joe. These are things that all of us have access to. We all breathe 20 to 30,000 breaths every single day on average. We all move our bodies. We can all learn how to tap into the power of meditation, focusing on nutrient dense foods. And so if we're learning how to live our life in a way that supports not only our physical health but our mental health as well, then I believe we'll all be a little bit better off. A lot of people are intimidated by this idea of exercise. So Dr. Brown is telling me, I need to get a gym membership, or I need to sign up to run a marathon?  That's great, but that's not what I'm advocating here when it comes specifically to what we can do to improve mental health. Several  years ago, there was a huge study, a meta-analysis in the American Journal of Psychiatry, that actually found that people who move their bodies more had a lower risk for developing depression regardless of geographic ...

Gregory Scott is the Founder of SoundPrint, an app that empowers users to search for places based on sound levels. He is considered a valuable resource within the audiology industry and has spoken at conferences including the Acoustical Society of America, the National Hearing Conservation Association, and the Hearing Loss Association of America. In this episode… Making your way in the world with hearing loss can be difficult. Even without hearing loss, the risk of permanent hearing damage is shockingly common in modern society. Unfortunately, there are very few tools that can help people know the audio profile of places before they arrive. That's where SoundPrint comes in. Gregory Scott is the Founder of SoundPrint, an app that creates a database for the noise levels of real-world locations. This allows people to find quiet spaces anywhere and helps warn people of potentially damaging levels. So how does the app work and where did it originate? Dr. Mark Syms has an informative conversation with Gregory Scott, the Founder of SoundPrint, to discuss the new app. The two discuss how it was made, the technology behind it, and its most practical applications. They go onto other topics such as young hearing loss, good audio environments for conversations, and how different devices measure sound. A study by the National Institute of Health found an estimated 21 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in 2020. Beyond the sheer number of people affected, what makes these findings astounding is the limited number of treatment options available for those who reach out for help. To gain perspective into the issue and discover why many suffering from clinical depression don't reach out for help, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors experts about advanced mental health and alternatives to the medical merry-go-round. Integrative Psychiatrist Dr. Gregory S. Brown shares the Five Pillars of Self-Care from his book, The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice for Overcoming Anxiety and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life . The founding director of the UCSD Adult ADHD program, the UCSD Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) program, and the Center for Advanced Treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Dr. David Feifel shares some breakthrough treatments for treating depression.

Lisa is joined by Dr. Gregory Scott Brown who talks about his book, The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life. Gregory Scott Brown, MD, is an integrative psychiatrist, mental health writer, and author of The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life (Harper Wave, June 2022). But despite being a doctor who works with patients and commonly gives advice, it is his personal story that introduced him to understand the importance of mental health. In 2019, he wrote for Men's Health magazine, “I'm a psychiatrist, husband, a man of color, and proud wellness advocate. Every day, I see patients and tell them: Talk, speak up. But a decade ago, suffering from depression. I didn't say a word.”He discovered self-care early on, and he attributes a significant part of his recovery to learning how to utilize self-care in a way that was effective. It would be years later until he came to understand that self-care is evidence-based medicine – a realization that ultimately led to the writing of his first book, The Self-Healing Mind. Greg's work in the mental health space extends beyond seeing patients in his clinic or providing expert commentary on mental health topics in the news. For the past several years, Greg has hosted conversations about mental health either on social media or for his Men's Health column about topics including student-athlete mental, coping with the stress of a chaotic news cycle, and cultural barriers to accessing mental healthcare.Greg has interviewed remarkable men and women about mental health topics including Marquette Men's Basketball Coach Shaka Smart, journalist Lisa Ling, news anchor Don Lemon, and professor Matt Johnson from the Hopkins Center for Psychedelic Medicine, and actor and songwriter Common. He's also interviewed grassroots wellness champions including Chris Isom and Alec Brownridge who started a yoga workshop for men with a focus on the social and emotional needs of men of color. Greg's mission is to change the way we talk and think about mental health and that starts with having candid conversations about how mental health affects the way we work, live, and love.BOOK DESCRIPTION - The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life. Mental health is the driving force behind every decision we make - how we live, work, and love. Too many of us suffer from depression and anxiety, impeding our choices and quality of life, and the numbers are growing across the globe despite the proliferation of prescription drugs. But there is another, proven, way to achieve mental wellness beyond antidepressants and talk therapy. Practicing psychiatrist Gregory Scott Brown believes that mental health begins with actionable self-care. Approached the right way, self-care is a powerful medicine that can help you improve and sustain your mental health. The Self-Healing Mind is a holistic approach to emotional and psychological healing that focuses on how evidence-based self-care strategies can be used to improve mental health. Dr. Brown challenges the current state of mental health care and the messaging around it, showing us how to move past outdated notions of “broken” brains and chemical imbalances. While he agrees that drugs and therapy in some cases are important for healing, his personal and professional experience has taught him that lifestyle interventions are also key to sustainable mental wellness. Dr. Brown's clinical philosophy supports an integrative approach that utilizes a combination of conventional treatments (medication and psychotherapy) with what he calls the Five Pillars of Self-Care: breathing mindful

The study of religion in China has a long history across a number of interrelated disciplines. In recent years, scholars have been reassessing past scholarship and synthesizing it in new ways. The three-volume project “Concepts and Methods for the Study of Chinese Religions” is one of the most exciting of these endeavors and establishes productive groundwork for future research. It includes three books: Stefania Travagnin, André Laliberté, Concepts and Methods for the Study of Chinese Religions I: State of the Field and Disciplinary Approaches (De Gruyter, 2019); Stefania Travagnin, Gregory Scott, Concepts and Methods for the Study of Chinese Religions II: Intellectual History of Key Concepts (De Gruyter, 2020); and Stefania Travagnin, Paul R. Katz, Concepts and Methods for the Study of Chinese Religions III: Key Concepts in Practice (De Gruyter, 2019).  The contributions evaluate the current state of scholarship, discusses a variety of analytical approaches and theories about methodology, epistemology, and the ontology of the field. The three books display an interdisciplinary approach and offer debates that transcend national traditions. It engages with a variety of methodologies for the study of East Asian religions and promotes dialogues with Western and Chinese voices. In my conversation with Stefania Travagnin, Professor at SOAS and co-editor of all 3 volumes, we discuss the catalyst for the project, co-editing and organizing of a large interdisciplinary effort, how one can define Chinese religions, representative disciplinary approaches and themes of previous scholarship, Chinese keywords and categories for studying religion, the importance of regional or local contexts, diaspora communities and global China, religious interaction and cross-tradition approaches, and future directions to advance the field of Chinese religions. Gregory A. Scott's Building the Buddhist Revival: Reconstructing Monasteries in Modern China (Oxford University Press, 2020) is the first major work in any language to address the topic of Buddhist monastery reconstructions. This book focuses on reconstructions of Buddhist monasteries in modern China that took place in the period from 1866 to 1966, beginning with the Taiping War in the late Qing and ending with the first seventeen years of the People’s Republic of China. Making extensive use of Chinese Buddhist periodical sources and incorporating Digital Humanities techniques to collect and analyze data, this monograph argues that the building of Buddhist revival in modern China was done in part through the reconstruction of Buddhist monasteries. Building on and engaging with Holmes Welch’s The Buddhist Revival in China (1968), Dr. Scott provides a new framework for understanding the revival of Buddhism in modern China, that “while Buddhist monastery reconstruction in China operates under the guise of a return to the past, it is in fact a confident, energetic step into the future.” Daigengna Duoer is a PhD student at the Religious Studies Department, University of California, Santa Barbara. Pope Francis has reached an historic agreement with the Chinese government which could restore diplomatic ties broken in 1951. Before September this year, Catholic bishops appointed by either the Vatican or the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association were not recognized by the other party. But now the Pope has agreed that in future, the Chinese can submit a list of suitable names from which Rome will make a selection. The Pope has also officially recognised seven Bishops appointed by the Chinese authorities in previous years. The Communists under Chairman Mao tried to kill off religion but it didn’t work and so Mao’s successors have had to compromise. The Chinese constitution says that citizens should be able to “enjoy freedom of religious belief" but in reality it does not guarantee the right to practice those religious beliefs. Buddhism is the most dominant religion and has been practiced in China for two millennia. Supporting our vets isn’t just about a handshake and a pat on the back. While it's always a good thing to recognize their contribution and sacrifice by shaking their hand when you see them in daily life, there's so much more we all can and should do. Fortunately, Gregory Scott, President and CEO of New Directions for Veterans, does. In fact, his organization serves 1000+ vets and their families every year by providing affordable housing in Los Angeles. He is responsible for taking vets off the street, which is excellent since there are thousands of homeless vets who could use the assistance. His organization, NDvets.org, also helps with addiction recovery and mental health issues. The group has a clinical staff to provide services even after vets are placed in permanent housing. Gregory's organization rehabbed two old hospitals to create 147 studio apartments, which means that many more homeless vets can leave the streets and be treated with the respect they deserve. The group is also working to create units with more bedrooms for families, and everything they do is rehabbed to meet strict Disability Standards. Listen to this important podcast through your Independence Day weekend to learn some alarming statistics and how you can help. What a great way to celebrate all those brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our soil safe. Learn about Gregory's involvement in the upcoming Walk for Warriors, too.
