The National Trail System in the United States spans many thousands of miles of foot trail. The crown jewels of that system, of course, are the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail. While the adventurous might look at those long trails and set their sights on hiking one end from end, not all manage to complete the journey. Many become disillusioned after days spent hiking in the rain, or because they become homesick, or because of the blisters that sprout on their feet. And some simply vanish. Today we're joined by New York Times Bestselling author Andrea Lankford to talk about her book, Trail of the Lost, the Relentless Search to Bring home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail. It's an incredible story Andrea has researched and woven together around three young men seemingly determined to go end to end on that trail.

The Wonnangatta Valley is the perfect place for anyone hiding a secret, or anyone who doesn't want to be found. The perfect place to have an affair. But also, the perfect place to get away with murder. Over the years, several people have gone missing there, never to be found again, and that very nearly happened to 74-year-old Russell Hill and 73-year-old Carol Clay. But thanks to some careful police work, detectives were able to track down a man named Greg Lynn. And with his trial just concluded, the former Jetstar pilot is waiting to find out how long he'll spend behind bars. Tonight, I'm talking about missing persons in our national forests with Andrea Lankford, former National Park Service Ranger and author of “Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail.” Andrea Lankford Andrea Lankford is the author of Ranger Confidential: Living, Working and Dying in the National Park, a National Geographic "Top Ten Book About U.S. Parks,” and three trail guides. During her twelve-year career as a law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service, Andrea won several awards for her criminal investigations. After leaving the ranger ranks, the accomplished outdoorswoman thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, kayaked from Miami to Key West, and was the first, with Beth Overton, to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail. Andrea is now a registered nurse living in Northern California. Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail, the 2,650-mile trek made famous by Cheryl Strayed's Wild, and no one has been able to find them. It's bugging the hell out of her. Andrea's concern soon leads her to a wild environment unlike any she's ever encountered: missing person Facebook groups. Andrea launches an investigation, joining forces with an eclectic team of amateurs who are determined to solve the cases by land and by screen: a mother of the missing, a retired pharmacy manager, and a mapmaker who monitors terrorist activity for the government. Together, they track the activities of kidnappers and murderers, investigate a cult, rescue a psychic in peril, cross paths with an unconventional scientist, and reunite an international fugitive with his family. Searching for the missing is a brutal psychological and physical test with the highest stakes, but eventually their hardships begin to bear strange fruits—ones that lead them to places and people they never saw coming. Find Andrea on X @andrea_lankford and IG @hauntedhiker or www.andrealankford.com. Don't forget to check out Brothers Keeper on amazon or where ever books are sold. Ty Benhoff two coming soon. In today's very spooky episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Andrea Lankford, author of “Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail.” Andrea's book, and thus our conversation, keys in on the story of three missing hikers on the PCT, all happening in consecutive years between 2015 and 2017. We talk about the specific details of each of these cases, how the official authorities could've done better in their searches, how the community rallied to offer their assistance, Andrea's speculation of what ultimately happened in each case, specific search and rescue tactics, and much more. We wrap the show by sharing a couple of stories about spooky incidents that have happened to us on trail, the triple crown of Halloween songs that slap, and we offer some details of the holiday hiker meetup. We also touch on the deeply saddening news of Donna Sauffley's passing, who was not only a beloved guest on this podcast but also a renowned trail angel. When we enter wild landscapes, no matter how remote, there is an inherent risk. A risk that we could be injured, that we encounter a wild animal, become lost, or, worst case scenario, succumb to foul play at the hands of another human. Some of these interactions and scenarios are unavoidable; even the most seasoned explorers die in the wilderness. In episode 98, we explore these exact topics. I find that it's essential to have a healthy fear when entering the wilderness. Maybe not a fear, but a mindset that it's possible for things to go wrong, and it's important to be prepared for when they do. Although I could likely fill an episode alone discussing some of my wild experiences and encounters outdoors, I had the pleasure of sitting down and learning from Andrea Lankford about how not to die in the wilderness. Andrea Lankford is the author of Ranger Confidential, three trail guides, and her upcoming book, Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail. During her career with the National Park Service, Andrea performed law enforcement, search and rescue, wildland firefighting, and wilderness emergency medicine. After leaving the ranger ranks, the accomplished outdoorswoman thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, kayaked from Miami to Key West, and she and her friend, Beth Overton, were the first to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail. "I really wanted to tell the truth behind the beautiful scenery." In a world of rugged landscapes and unpredictable elements, park rangers and first responders face challenges that test their limits. Sometimes that work can include critical tasks such as searching for missing hikers. Andrea Lankford is a former National Park Service ranger who joins to share her insights on the importance of firefighting and law enforcement in parks. Andrea's love for the outdoors lead her to study Forestry and Wildlife management at the University of Tennessee. She volunteered for the Forest Service for one summer and ended up going to the Seasonal Law Enforcement Academy in Silva, North Carolina. From there she was hired at Cape Padres National Seashore as seasonal law enforcement park rangers with the National Park Service. She fell in love with the job and ended up working for the Park Service for over a decade. The opportunity to work in national parks like Zion, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon, had Andrea face the thin line between natural beauty and danger. She witnessed the harsh reality of nature and the risks that came with her role. Her experiences were not just about enforcing laws but also dealing with injuries, deaths, and missing persons. These intense experiences inspired Andrea to give voice to the heroic efforts of park rangers. After years of serving as a park ranger, Andrea found herself drawn to the unanswered mysteries of missing hikers. The uncanny disappearances of three hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail piqued her interest. Using investigative skills honed over the years, she offered her expertise pro bono to the grieving families. Andrea's experiences as a ranger proved invaluable. The resilience, people skills, and problem-solving abilities she gained were put to use in unexpected ways, proving the versatility and value of her background. As a park ranger, she won several awards for her work as a criminal investigator and she implemented the "Heat Kills. Hike Smart" public education program credited with preventing heat-related deaths at the Grand Canyon—a program that continues to save lives today. Andrea is equally passionate about using her influence to raise significant discussions around missing hikers and effective search and rescue strategies. Her storytelling seamlessly fuses personal experiences with professional insights. After you listen to this episode, make sure to buy her book Ranger Confidential. It is Andrea's first book that takes you behind the scenes of being a park ranger and shares captivating stories from her time in the National Park Service. In American folklore the hodag is a fearsome monster resembling a large bull-horned predator with a row of thick curved spines down its back. The hodag was said to be born from the ashes of cremated oxen, as the incarnation of the accumulation of abuse, the animals had suffered at the hands of their owners. On this episode we talk about missing or dead hikers in Russia and on the Appalachian Trail. It may get gruesome—a bit of mystery with unproven theories. Cattle mutilations were brought up in comparison to the injuries sustained by the Russian hikers. We were recording outside at Grayhaven Winery so you'll hear background noise like other customers, horses, dogs, fire crackling, wind, and one of the wine stewards coming to check on us. 8 hikers gone missing in Russia. Quick episode
Hey everyone, we’re still out on maternity leave. (You like how I said “we”??) This week we’re bringing you a classic episode that’s been making the headlines recently. National Geographic has reported that scientists using animation software from the movie Frozen have determined what really happens to the hikers of the Dyatlov pass incident. Did they finally prove that the KGB stalked the hikers and took them out? Or did they find evidence of a yeti? Aliens? Olaf? Not quite. They’re saying it was a simple explanation - the hikers perished in an avalanche. But listen on, because there is a mountain of evidence that points to a much more sinister explanation. After checking out this throwback episode, you can head over to our Patreon for some bonus content like our minisodes, mixed bags, Wheel segments and Am I the Asshole questions - where Reddit users ask whether they're acting like assholes and we judge them! Enjoy the episode! Thanks so much and keep it creepy Nine hikers go missing on a treacherous and difficult hike up, what some call, Dead Mountain. Russian Military, aliens, bigfoot - who or what is to blame for the Dyatlov Pass incident?
Hey everyone, we’re taking this week off. Since it's January 20, we're re-releasing episode 20 - the unsolved case of the Lost Girls of Panama. An episode that still keeps us up at night. After checking out this throwback episode, you can head over to our Patreon for some bonus content like our monthly minisodes, mixed bags, and Wheel segments where we spin an actual game show wheel to determine what we're going to talk about! Thanks so much and keep it creepy! _Two friends. A world away from home. 90 mysterious photographs. What started out as a fun trip to learn Spanish and help some kids in need turned into a nightmare. Fell Wanderer - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvwnpNXp1asbU6c-SyScw9QHarwood Forest, The Cheviots and The Simonside hills are places where there are multiple strange encounters and the odd 7ft hairy hominid report, over the years many people have shared their encounters by reporting strange figures, Paranormal and unexplained events, Animal Mutilations, Strange Craft and Lights, Ghost Lights, Missing Hikers, Missing time and even the odd Cryptid. The stories and folklore in the area goes back generations in time. Northumberland has many forests, and most of them are accessible to the public. Although there are miles of woodland paths where you are unlikely to meet another soul, there are several more popular, waymarked trails. The area is popular with wild campers due to the many out of the way places, and many of the areas mentioned here will be familiar to them. The reports in the area are usually made by people walking the dog, hiking, mountain biking or camping. Everyday people doing everyday things. I wonder when the next strange experience will be reported and if you will be that person making the report. The Simonside Hills have an ancient legend of malevolent dwarves. The dwarves are described as dark and mischievous pests, tricksters that attack innocent travelers in the night. The dwarves are also referred to as Brown Men, Bogles and the Duergar. They are known to lead hikers astray, usually after dark with lit torches that attract attention and lead the unsuspecting follower into the dark bogs or over the crags which would lead to certain death. .....................I was walking close to some hazel bushes, my wife was about 30 yards away to my right and Oskar our dog was beside her. Suddenly I was aware of a loud growling sound coming from the bushes beside me, it didn't sound like a large Cat growl more like the growl of a very large Dog. My wife at that point hadn't heard the growl, neither did Oskar so I didnt say anything. As we got further down the hill about another 50 yards I heard another loud growl, louder than before and it came from within the trees, this time my wife shouted "did you hear that"? I said "let's get back to the car "and we quickly walked down the hill to the carpark. Suddenly to our horror we found that whatever was making the growling sounds had beaten us to the car somehow and was now in the trees directly in front of us, making even louder growling noises. I told my wife to quickly get into the car and I dragged Oskar to the back end and put him in the boot. It was at this point that I was truly scared as I looked around for some large stick to fend off whatever it was to my mind was about to spring at me from the trees. I got into the car and breathed a sigh of relief. Whatever it was had stalked us all the way down the hill for over 300 yards and by the sound of the growl it was extremely large. If you have not already joined BBR International Investigations, you can become a member of our BBR Investigations group and help us to investigate cases like these, in the field or online by contacting Deb via debbiehatswell@gmail.com. Traveling abroad with your best friend sounds like a dream come true, but for Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon it became a living nightmare. More than four years after they went missing in the Panamanian jungle there still isn't a definitive answer as to what tragedy befell these women. Phone records recovered from their cell phones tell a story of two women desperately trying to get help. Pictures recovered from their camera seem like they were trying to send a message to their families as to what had happened. But what did happen still remains a mystery...
Nine hikers go missing on a treacherous and difficult hike up, what some call, Dead Mountain. Were they victims of human error, or was something more sinister to blame?.
The dark side of the romantic story of two missing hikers who died in each other's arms, sort of ... and with the help of a handgun. Support the show.
