On this episode, Stacy talks with the new Ben May Distinguished Professor of Management at the USA Mitchell College of Business, Dr. Robyn Brouer. Dr. Brouer is a dedicated educator who has a passion for leadership, social influence and effectiveness, Organizational Behavior, and Human Resources. And she is driven by the age-old question of "how can we make leaders better?" Dr. Brouer shares her excitement for engaging with the Mitchell College of Business doctoral students, what skills are essential to thriving in a high-level business school program, and mentoring students in a one-on-one educational environment.   Learn More About Dr. Robyn Brouer Key Takeaways - If you have a love of learning, a curious mind, and the will to put in the hard work, then you have what it takes to be in a business Ph.D. program. - The Cohort system is an excellent alternative to a traditional one at a time Ph.D. program. - A life of learning begins with your enrollment and completion of your business Ph.D. - Build solid relationships with your cohort, other students, and instructors; they will be beneficial for your time in school and the rest of your career. - Look for a business school program that values not only research but also in developing mentorship and one on one relationships with the students.   Dr. Brouler Said: I've taught at the big schools where students are just a number. That's not the feeling I got from the University of South Alabama. I'm very excited to come to a school that values research where I can work with doctoral students and develop mentoring and one-on-one relationships. If you like to learn, a PhD program is for you because you can learn and keep learning and learning. You're never going to run out of things to learn. One of the main things I look for when selecting Ph.D. students is that drive, curiosity, and desire to have more knowledge. It's not about what grades you got. It's not about your GMAT score for me. Ph.D. programs are hard work, but you don't have to be the smartest. You just have to have that curiosity, and you have to be willing to put in the work. I think cohort programs do a good job rather than the one-off accepting one Ph.D. per person at a time.   /////////////// Learn more about the USA Mitchell College of Business - Business PhD Program - Master in Business Administration - Undergraduate Business Degrees

Nicole was a single Mom, already thriving in her marketing firm, loved to teach, and didn't think she could find a Ph.D. program to meet her work and life situation and responsibilities. After a suggestion to check out Dr. Joe Hair at the USA Mitchell School of Business, Nicole found the perfect program for her life and teaching goals, and the rest is history. Nicole shares her academic journey, what you should look for in a Ph.D. program, why academic conferences are amazing, and her philosophy of finding dissertation co-authors, researchers, and mentors. Learn More About Dr. Nicole Beachum Key Takeaways - Find a Ph.D. program that fits your work/life goals and has a prestigious staff and supportive leadership. - When choosing a Ph.D. program, research which institutions recent graduates are being placed. - Procrastination is not going to benefit you. You're going to get out of each class what you put into it in this Ph.D. program. - Put yourself out there early. Strive to review journals and articles. Go to as many academic conferences as possible. - Look for paper co-authors and academic mentors in your cohort, institution, and conferences. Nicole Said: My current Department Chair recommended that I consider the USA program specifically because Dr. Joe Hair was there. Attending the USA Mitchell School of Business decision for me; not only was it time-saving and allowed me to keep my main job, but I'd be studying under ultimately some of the best in academia. Learn more about Dr. Hair, realize he's kind of a marketing legend. The Mitchell College of Business is under good leadership, the Global Scholars are incredible, and USA does a really good job of helping and supporting you as a student. If you have a paper that you can present at a conference, USA will try to get you there, and every student can basically go to at least one conference every year. I think we're spoiled at USA because we have Dr. Joe Hair introducing us to all of these marketing giants and other professors that are big names. /////////////// Learn more about the USA Mitchell College of Business - Business PhD Program - Master in Business Administration - Undergraduate Business Degrees

Dr. Ed Belbruno is a professional artist, specializing in abstract expressionist paintings, Clinical Professor of Mathematics at Yeshiva University, a Visiting Research Associate in the Astrophysics Department at Princeton University, and President and Founder of the company Innovative Orbital Design. Ed is a mathematician who applies his work to answer questions in celestial mechanics, the branch of astronomy that examines how rockets, asteroids, moons, and other objects move in space. In particular, he focuses on delicate, complicated motions called chaos motions (based on chaos theory). Calculations of chaos motions are relevant for studying trajectories of spacecraft to the moon and other destinations, how the moon was created, the origins of the universe, and other questions in astrophysics. Art is one of Ed's passions outside of math and science. Since his first serious oil painting of a view of Saturn from the moon of Titan at the age of seven, Ed has created a large portfolio of paintings, and he continues to be a prolific professional artist today. Ed received his associate degree from Mitchell College and his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from New York University. He then worked as a faculty member at Boston University for about five years before accepting a position as a trajectory analyst at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He was a loved husband, father, son, and friend. He grew up in southeastern Connecticut, living in Pawcatuck, Mystic and New London. James learned to swim by falling in the Pawcatuck River as a youngster.  In some ways, James's life began in earnest after he contracted rheumatic fever, spent a year in bed, and relearned to walk in his early teens. Shortly after recovery, he dropped out of eighth grade and joined the U.S. Navy at the ripe old age of 17 in 1942, to fight in World War II.  He started his Navy career as a gunner's mate and finished as a Chief Petty Officer and a Fire Control school instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after cruises to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the tropics, and places in between, all above Davy Jones' Locker.  Jim married Agnes Irene Scott in 1948 and started a family with her in between stints of sea duty. They eventually settled in Pawcatuck 1962. Through it all, he learned the power of an education. Though Jim was often away from his young family at sea, working at the base movie theater, and going to night school at Mitchell College, he dearly loved his family. Later, Jim became the Apprentice School Supervisor at Electric Boat and earned an associate degree in Business Administration in 1968 from Mitchell College. After Electric Boat he became the New England Training Coordinator for the National Machine Tool Builders Association and finished his formal career as the Director of the Department of Labor for Rhode Island.   Jim loved scuba diving, fishing, clamming, lobstering, baking, running marathons and of course doing 750 sit-ups whenever he felt like it. In his later years, he also tended a large raspberry patch, dabbled with grapevines, and loved sharing his homemade jelly and sourdough bread.  He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. He was a loved husband, father, son, and friend. He grew up in southeastern Connecticut, living in Pawcatuck, Mystic and New London. He learned to swim by falling in the Pawcatuck River as a youngster. The ever health-conscious and scuba-diving Dad wryly wondered if he should have smoked a few cigarettes along the way as he struggled with walking during the last years of his life. He spent his war years in the Pacific at a forward Navy supply depot on Majuro in the Marshall Islands. He started his Navy career as a gunner's mate and finished as a Chief Petty Officer and a Fire Control school instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after cruises to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the tropics, and places in between, all above Davy Jones' Locker. He served on the Grand Canyon, the Edisto, the McGowan, the Proteus, the Hank, the Moale and others. While on shore leave, Jim loved to roller skate. Jim married Agnes Irene Scott in 1948 and started a family with her in between stints of sea duty. During his Navy years, his family called trailer parks in Virginia and Rhode Island and Army housing in Maryland home before settling in Pawcatuck in May of 1962. Through it all, he learned the power of an education. Though Jim was often away from his young family at sea, working at the base movie theater, and going to night school at Mitchell College, he dearly loved his family. Jim started his post Navy career as the Apprentice School Supervisor at Electric Boat and earned an associate degree in Business Administration in 1968 from Mitchell College. After Electric Boat he became the New England Training Coordinator for the National Machine Tool Builders Association and finished his formal career as the Director of the Department of Labor for Rhode Island. After retiring to build docks, drive cabs, and after taking culinary classes at Ella Grasso Technical School and learning to cook like his mom, he worked in area restaurants such as the Shelter Harbor and Go Fish. No matter what, he often longed for the blue waters off Majuro and sadly enough, travel agents would not sell him a ticket when he tried to return in his eighties. Jim will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Thank you for taking the time today to remember and celebrate Jim's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! This episode was fun because I got to talk to two people younger than me that are now doing what I once did. I sat down with Chad-Wayne of Mitchell College and Lance-Dale of Elms College to talk about their experiences as STUDENT Athletes and how they got to where they are now. It was interesting hearing their stories of college and what they're going through & how I went through exactly those same things. We exchanged stories and I even tried to drop some knowledge on them on how to make it through their next 2.5 years. This one was filled with laughs, stories & all around good vibes. The Rev. Ranjit K. Mathews: Going Deeper in the Realm of God   Today’s guest is the Rev. Ranjit Mathews, rector of St. James’, New London, where he’s been for about a year now.   Ranjit was born in Brighton, Mass. to immigrant parents who came to the U.S. in the 1970s. He grew up in Sharon, Mass., majored in business administration at George Washington University, and received his M. Div from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. As a seminarian he served at St. Mary’s in Harlem and studied abroad in Bangalore, India. Ranjit was ordained deacon in 2006, and priest in 2007, both in the Diocese of Massachusetts.   His father, the Rev. Koshy Mathews, is also an Episcopal priest, who has been serving as rector of St. Peter’s in Phoenixville, PA for more than a decade. (Ranjit’s middle name is Koshy, after his father.)   Before coming to Connecticut, Ranjit served on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s staff as the Partnership Officer for Africa. Prior to that he was associate rector of St. Luke’s, Long Beach, California a bilingual parish where he worked to build connections between the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking community members, and led the youth group. It’s where he developed a relationship with the hip-hop community that he’s carried with him.    He’s also served as theology lecturer at the Msalato Theological College of St. John’s University in Tanzania, and assistant rector of St. Michael’s in Milton, Mass.     Ranjit and his wife, Johanna, have a young son, Dhruv, who is six. They live in New London.    We began with a conversation about hip hop: He loves the genre so much that he made it part of his Celebration of New Ministry last fall. He talks about his experience in California working with an organization, “Hope in Hollywood,” that brought in young adults from across LA to St. Stephen’s, Hollywood once a week. There was a meal and a DJ, and the youth would dance or rap for hours, while the leaders took the opportunity to build relationships. Some of the youth were able to come to the church during the week, as well, to talk about life, school, and family.    After Ranjit was called to New London he began to meet some of the young adults in the hip hop community in New London. That led to their inclusion in the Celebration of New Ministry. Ranjit rapped, they danced. The grant will allow them to expand that, and go deeper.   Next, we talked to him about the city of New London, known for the submarine base, Electric Boat (that builds submarines), the Coast Guard Academy, Mitchell College, Connecticut College, the Hygenic Art gallery and performance space, and so much more.    He calls it a fabulous city, sharing that a parishioner calls it “juicy.” What he likes in particular are the way it’s all connected, that incongruent communities and people can find congruence in places like its coffee shops and – he hopes – at St. James. The church used to host the city’s homeless hospitality center, which has since moved to its own space. Now it hosts a refugee agency, a group that works with families who are poor, and other works. He hopes to increase the number of groups that meet there. “I’d love for St. James’ to be a convening place for incongruent,” he said, adding that his “single and only focus is on the realm of God however that manifests itself in New London.”    While he says the parish is “popping” now with organizations that are about the work of Jesus Christ, he talks about how he sees the opportunity to build relationships, go deeper, and lean more intentionally into the work.   The conversation then moved to more personal matters. Ranjit, and his wife Johanna, were raised in the Mar Thoma Church (brought to India by the Apostle Thomas). Ranjit’s great grandfather served in that church, and was a renowned healer; his father, Koshy, decided to follow that example. After emigrating to the U.S., Koshy found a connection to The Episcopal Church, was ordained in that tradition, and raised his children in it as well.   Ranjit then shared some of the ways his father encouraged him to think more deeply about his engagement in social justice, his early experience with a more conservative faith group on campus, and, his amazing spiritual lesson learned from two girls with leprosy whom he encountered in a cathedral in India. “She broke me open and taught me about vulnerability; that gives me the passion for the work that I do,” he said.   Our final question was about where he sees God now, and about his family and his thoughts for the future. He acknowledged the need that he and his family have for their own nourishment, and reiterated how much is “popping” in New London. There’s some pushback, he said, and change is hard, yet he believes there’s integrity in walking with that pushback and resistance: “We’re paying attention to where God is leading, and sometimes that’s hard,” he said. But they’re going deeper in the realm of God.
