Shine On! In dieser Folge zu Gast: Stefanie Lamp, Bezirksvorsteherin von Ottakring, Wiens 16. Bezirk.

Fixed income investments are subject to various other risks including changes in credit quality, market valuations, liquidity, prepayments, early redemption, corporate events, tax ramifications, and other factors. Lower rated securities are subject to greater credit risk, default risk, and liquidity risk.Bank loans typically have below investment-grade credit ratings and may be subject to more credit risk, including the risk of nonpayment of principal or interest. Most bank loans have floating coupon rates that are tied to short-term reference rates like the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR), so substantial increases in interest rates may make it more difficult for issuers to service their debt and cause an increase in loan defaults. A rise in short-term references rates typically result in higher income payments for investors, however. Bank loans are typically secured by collateral posted by the issuer, or guarantees of its affiliates, the value of which may decline and be insufficient to cover repayment of the loan. Many loans are relatively illiquid or are subject to restrictions on resales, have delayed settlement periods, and may be difficult to value. Bank loans are also subject to maturity extension risk and prepayment risk.Commodity-related products carry a high level of risk and are not suitable for all investors. As Amy breaks down the complexity of CPI, she highlights its various components and how they relate to inflation. The discussion then moves on to the relationship between unemployment and inflation, with Amy explaining the significance of the U3 and U6 unemployment rates. She emphasizes the importance of monitoring these rates to understand their potential impact on the economy.Lastly, Amy delves into the connection between consumer and investment sentiment, explaining the importance of consumer sentiment as an economic indicator. By understanding consumer sentiment, we can better grasp how it affects spending and overall GDP.Don't miss out on this informative episode that sheds light on the complex relationships between economic indicators and consumer behavior. And if you haven't already, make sure to listen to the previous episodes in this six-part series to get a comprehensive understanding of the economy and its impact on our daily lives.Virginia is for Wine Lovers:In this episode, host Amy Irvine takes a detour from the economic discussion to share her passion for wine, specifically exploring the wine industry in Virginia. She reveals that wine production in the state dates back to the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. Despite the hot and humid summers that can pose a challenge to viticulture, the Virginia wine industry has grown significantly in the last 20 years.Amy highlights that French hybrid varieties account for about 20% of the total grape production in Virginia, while American varietals make up approximately 5%. She shares the top ten varietals produced in the region, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Viognier. Amy also notes that the central and northern Virginia County area, particularly just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is responsible for a significant portion of the state's wine production.Amy's enthusiasm for the Virginia wine industry is evident as she expresses her desire to visit and explore the region in person, and she encourages listeners to share their recommendations for great Virginia wines that she could try and potentially feature on the show in the future. This episode is brought to you by Rooted Planning Group. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Updated Deference is not a strong argument against the utility uncertainty approach to alignment, published by Ivan Vendrov on June 24, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. Thesis: The problem of fully updated deference is not a strong argument against the viability of the assistance games / utility uncertainty approach to AI (outer) alignment. Background: A proposed high-level approach to AI alignment is to have the AI maintain a probability distribution over possible human utility functions instead of optimizing for any particular fixed utility function. Variants of this approach were advocated by Stuart Russell in Human Compatible and by Hadfield-Menell et al in the CIRL paper. Adding utility uncertainty intuitively seems to provide a number of safety benefits relative to having a fixed objective, including: Utility uncertainty gives the AI an incentive to adjust in response to a human operator's corrective actions. Utility uncertainty weakens the AI's incentive to harm its human operators, since this might result in a permanent loss of utility-relevant information. Utility uncertainty incentivizes the AI to avoid irreversible changes to the state of the world, since those might lead to permanently low utility. Despite the high profile and intuitive appeal of utility uncertainty, almost none of the alignment researchers I know consider it a promising approach to AI alignment. The most common reason cited seems to be the problem of fully updated deference (e.g. Richard Ngo's alignment research exercises point to this as the reason for why CIRL doesn't solve the alignment problem). In this post I will argue why fully updated deference should not be seen as a strong argument against utility uncertainty as approach to AI alignment. This is not meant as an argument in favor of the uncertainty approach; it may have other irresolvable difficulties which I discuss briefly in the conclusion. Outline: The Arbital post that seems to be the canonical reference for updated deference contains many heuristic arguments and one concrete, worked-out example in the section Moral uncertainty and its relation to corrigibility. I will mostly engage with the example, and argue that It conflates the problem of updated deference with the independent problem of prior mis-specification. If we remove prior mis-specification, there is no problem in the limit of increasing AI capability. The Problem of Updated Deference The example in the post has an AI that is uncertain between three utility functions U1, U2, U3 whereas the human's true utility function is V. The AI believes that the utility that will be attained in each of the three possible worlds is ui with AI assistance vi if the human optimizes V without the AI's assistance (e.g. because the humans shut the AI down) If the AI is much more powerful than humans, the argument goes, then uivi in any of the three worlds, so the AI will not let itself be shut down. The uncertainty doesn't help because the AI can choose to keep gathering information until it has fully updated. Since it's more powerful than the humans, it can gather that information more efficiently when it's not shut down, and therefore ignores the shutdown signal. Factoring out prior mis-specification The original example has the AI system assign probability 0 to the true human utility function V, presumably because its prior probability was 0. I think any advocate of the utility uncertainty approach would agree that assigning a nonzero prior to the true human utility function is critical for the approach to work. Describing such a prior abstractly is easy (just take the Solomonoff prior over programs), implementing a real CIRL agent that reasons with such a prior could be intractably difficult, but this is clearly a separate problem from "fully updated deference". So from now on w...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is Highly Advanced Epistemology 101 for Beginners, Part 7: Stuff That Makes Stuff Happen, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Followup to: Causality: The Fabric of Real Things Previous meditation: "You say that a universe is a connected fabric of causes and effects. Well, that's a very Western viewpoint - that it's all about mechanistic, deterministic stuff. I agree that anything else is outside the realm of science, but it can still be real, you know. My cousin is psychic - if you draw a card from his deck of cards, he can tell you the name of your card before he looks at it. There's no mechanism for it - it's not a causal thing that scientists could study - he just does it. Same thing when I commune on a deep level with the entire universe in order to realize that my partner truly loves me. I agree that purely spiritual phenomena are outside the realm of causal processes that can be studied by experiments, but I don't agree that they can't be real." Reply: Fundamentally, a causal model is a way of factorizing our uncertainty about the universe. One way of viewing a causal model is as a structure of deterministic functions plus uncorrelated sources of background uncertainty. Let's use the Obesity-Exercise-Internet model (reminder: which is totally made up) as an example again: We can also view this as a set of deterministic functions Fi, plus uncorrelated background sources of uncertainty Ui: This says is that the value x3 - how much someone exercises - is a function of how obese they are (x1), how much time they spend on the Internet (x2), plus some other background factors U3 which don't correlate to anything else in the diagram, all of which collectively determine, when combined by the mechanism F3, how much time someone spends exercising. There might be any number of different real factors involved in the possible states of U3 - like whether someone has a personal taste for jogging, whether they've ever been to a trampoline park and liked it, whether they have some gene that affects exercise endorphins. These are all different unknown background facts about a person, which might affect whether or not they exercise, above and beyond obesity and Internet use. But from the perspective of somebody building a causal model, so long as we don't have anything else in our causal graph that correlates with these factors, we can sum them up into a single factor of subjective uncertainty, our uncertainty U3 about all the other things that might add up to a force for or against exercising. Once we know that someone isn't overweight and that they spend a lot of time on the Internet, all our uncertainty about those other background factors gets summed up with those two known factors and turned into a 38% conditional probability that the person exercises frequently. And the key condition on a causal graph is that if you've properly described your beliefs about the connective mechanisms Fi, all your remaining uncertainty Ui should be conditionally independent: or more generally And then plugging those probable Ui into the strictly deterministic Fi should give us back out our whole causal model - the same joint probability table over the observable Xi. Hence the idea that a causal model factorizes uncertainty. It factorizes out all the mechanisms that we believe connect variables, and all remaining uncertainty should be uncorrelated so far as we know. To put it another way, if we ourselves knew about a correlation between two Ui that wasn't in the causal model, our own expectations for the joint probability table couldn't match the model's product and all the theorems about causal inference would go out the window. Technically, the idea that the Ui are uncorrelated is known as the causal Markov condition. What if you realize that two variables actually are correlated more than you though...

Topics to Discuss: National Employment Situation report contains some solid numbers, but mixed headlines. The solid numbers are in job gains, where the nation added 213,000 jobs, well above the market expectation of around 190,000. Revisions to the two previous months added another 37,000 jobs. The mixed part of the report is that the headline is the unemployment rate (U3) ticked up from 3.8% to 4.0%. The expectation was for no change. This was mostly due to an increase in the labor force participation, which moved up 0.2 percentage points after being essentially unchanged since February. At this point the economy needs the additional workers, so this is a fundamentally good thing. The broader measure of labor underutilization (U6) also rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%. Average hourly earnings rose 2.7% from a year ago, slightly below expectations, but about in line with recent history. Jobs gains were led by professional and business services, followed by manufacturing, which had a solid 30,000 job addition, mostly in durable goods. Strength was also seen in health care, construction, and mining. Retail was the only sector with a notable loss of jobs (-22,000), but that did not offset last month's gain of 25,000. Other sectors were essentially unchanged. All in all, a pretty good report, despite an easily misinterpreted rise in unemployment. I have used this several times for moving Linux to new drives. It does support Windows 10 too. The only downside is it has so many different options. You need to read the instructions carefully before starting. It's almost impossible to destroy your original drive (unless you try to restore your new blank drive onto your original Windows drive)! He lives in Haslemere, Surrey, but he is limited to just variable BT Internet with a max speed of 32Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. He looked at 5G but not available in his area yet. Starlink costs him approx £90 per month. It delivers speeds consistently in the 80Mbps - 170Mbps range - and this is improving as Starlink adds more satellites. He does get dropouts of 3-6 seconds at times, now and then. The Starlink dish is mounted on his chimney and is slightly bigger than a Sky dish. It is motorised for tracking the satellites and heated to clear snow and ice. He's not had any overheating issues, but could see that might happen on a hot 30C+ day in direct sunlight. U3 pod was lucky enough to have Carinya join the show and share the journey she and her partner went through in starting a family. Carinya gives us insights into what it is actually like going through the motions of infertility – from trying to fall pregnant naturally, to the medical investigations required to work out why they weren't having success, to the realisation they needed IVF + ICSI.Carinya shares her experiences and knowledge around pregnancy, birth, IVF and parenting on her blog: www.thebirthingjourney.comPlease keep in mind that Carinya has generously told us her personal story. Starting a family is a unique journey, and we don't expect Carinya's experience to reflect that of everyone going through investigation and/or treatment of subfertility/infertility.
