We conclude our multi-part series on one of the greatest actors, philosophers, fighters, and doers of the 20th Century, Bruce Lee. He was all of those things, but above all he considered himself an artist of life. We explore some of the last thoughts he left on paper that his daughter shared with us via her book on her father: Be Water, My Friend - The Teachings of Bruce Lee. Incredibly grateful that Shannon has shared and interpreted the gifts that her father left this world before he entered into the next dimension. Bruce Lee has definitely entered my pantheon of great thinkers: Thoreau, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Nassim Taleb, Jared Diamond, and Malcom Gladwell. I'll be reading his work for a long time to come. I'll tell you one thing, I am also going to be watching the Enter the Dragon and will soon do a review of Enter the Dragon through the lens of Be Water, My Friend. I am doing 15 pushups tonight in honor of Bruce Lee. Enter the Motherf...king Dragon my friends. Enter the Motherf...cking Dragon. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

I just read an awesome book, Be Water, My Friend, The Teachings of Bruce Lee by his daughter Shannon Lee. This book is now on my essential reading list along with Walden by Henry David Thoreau and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I absolutely loved it! I am going to do a series of daily episodes about various teachings in the book. I am no expert on Bruce Lee. I just read this book about three weeks ago, but whoa, this was just an awesome, good vibe, life changing book. Would love to have you join me this week for my daily exploration of the teachings of Bruce Lee and how it applies to our daily lives. Love, love, love this book! I have included a link to the book in the show notes at rocknecole.com. If you buy through the link, a portion of the proceeds will help fund the RockneCast.

Apprenticeships and trade schools have a marketing problem. Sal, the host of the Fresh Apprentice podcast and a plumbing apprentice, told us that when he was first starting his apprenticeship, he got some flak from his family: "You're going to school to plunge toilets and everything? That's so sad." But it turns out that apprenticeships and trade school are actually a pretty sweet gig! He's getting an almost free education: He only has to pay $300 for textbooks, and even those are pretty heavily subsidized. At some trade schools, such as the one close by Isabel's college, Williamson, are fully financed by the alumni of the school, so students get to go there for free. And 100% of the students who graduate from that school get jobs. Sal works for the United Association, a union of plumbers, fitters, welders, and service techs that negotiates contracts with construction contracting companies that mainly work on big sky-rises. We asked him why the workers the apprentices shadow are willing to train mentees, because apparently they don't actually get paid any extra for it: the answer is two-fold. On the one hand, there is a strong sense of brotherhood in the trades and a belief that you have to pay it forward because that's what somebody did for you. On the other, the union pays out a pension and so the more young people you can recruit into the union, the stronger chance your pension will actually pay out because you need to keep a flow of people paying into it. At the end of the day, we need to promote more people (especially women!) going to trade schools because they are high-demand, well-paying jobs (according to ZipRecruiter, a master plumber in the Washington DC area can make between $40K-$100K a year, with a median salary of $62K, which is almost twice the median income of the average US citizen), and it's a great alternative for people who don't think they are a good fit for college. My Friend’s Cancer Made Me Confront Chaos I received a quote recently that bothered me, “slow dancing with chaos”. It immediately recalled the famed John Mayer title, “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room”. Christmas Eve, we are driving through a small, pass-thru town on the way to have a quick glimpse at the university that my son just committed to attending and running for.   “Hey man...just wanted you to know before word got out... I’ve got stage 3 melanoma.” About four weeks later, another bomb... a 14 x 14 centimeter mass on his kidney.   My friend and I along with another dear wisdom mentor grabbed lunch as we do throughout the year.  No agenda, we typically just check in with each other and then meandor the back roads of our experiences while laboring intently to take in new views along the way while staring out a windshield of the wisdom of foundational books and Proverbs.  If it sounds geeky, your perception would not be misaligned. Throughout our lunch, I was unusually quiet primarily because I was moved by my friend’s hope, joy, laughter, humility, curiosity, and confidence. At one point he told us of the many texts he had received encouraging him to “kick cancer’s ass”, and “you can do it!”. He obviously appreciated the backing and optimism, and yet he had a contrasting strategy for the next few months as he cranked up radiation. “Scott, I want to be a helpless lamb in God’s arms.” How did he come to such an outrageous game plan?  The human spirit must fight, battle, war, aggress, and strike blows to that which invades. This quiet warrior had procured a different armamentarium.  His stockpile was one of quiet, thought, slowness, patience, stillness, and sharp perception. To my knowledge, I do not have cancer or one of a thousand other possible ailments that can lob death threats and sentences at the very bodies they call home. I, and you likely as well, suffer from a more social disease; submitting to chaos. Email tethers us.  Facebook (insert your channel of choice) grips us.  The expectations of others blind us, and societal noise confuses us. Ryan Holiday contends that Stillness Is The Key. How can my friend have the courage to build an arsenal in such stark contrast to the common battle tools that are wielded? He practices stillness. My friend wields the sword of wisdom, the shield of a quiet life, the helmet of thinking, the spectacles of reading, and the smiles of joy.  Chaos thrives in the stickiness environment of busy.  Chaos LOVES busy. Our usual response to chaos is to match it with louder and louder chaos.  Chaos is loud, be louder.  Chaos punches, punch back harder.  Chaos confuses, act like a know-it-all.  Chaos delivers a blow, try to kick its ass. Holiday quotes Marcus Aurelius, “Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?’”  Holiday goes on to say, “Knowing what not to think about.  What to ignore and not to do.  It’s your first and most important job.” Stillness will determine your battle armour.  Stillness will provide the insight that you need in the moment.  Stillness sets the stage for wisdom.   Chaos on the other hand... well, if stillness is the key, then chaos is the beautifully groomed path to destruction.   I will not offer a typical stepwise approach to stillness... for I need stillness in order to see it for myself. Maybe this wisdom statement will help, “be still…”  Drop your hands.  Step back.   “... and know…”   I’ll invite you to fill in the blank.   Scott Beebe is the founder of Business On Purpose, author of Let Your Business Burn: Stop Putting Out Fires, Discover Purpose, And Build A Business That Matters.  Scott also hosts The Business On Purpose Podcast and can be found at mybusinessonpurpose.com.

This conversation reminded Shannon of this passage from her book Be Water, My Friend, “In order to engage with what is happening openly, we have to be able to be fully honest and fully sincere with ourselves. We have to approach every experience head on without prejudice. If you can be fully present and honest about your experience you can begin to truly research it.” Hope you enjoy this genuine discussion about life, therapy, flow, creativity, and keeping it simple with Affion Crockett. Forty-seven years ago, Bruce Lee began to write out his philosophies in an article called In My Own Process. Sadly, he passed away before he could finish. His daughter Shannon, who was four years old at the time, took it on her shoulders to put those philosophies in a book. It’s called Be Water, My Friend, and when Cal began to read it he thought of the John Milton quote: “A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life upon life.” Listen to Shannon and Cal, and put a little Bruce Lee in your life.

I’ve been going through a lot recently with corona and quarantine and everything, and just really need to stop thinking about my own life for a second. Unfortunately, most things I read or watch remind me of myself and my relationships. The only thing that’s been helping is watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and playing Papa’s Bakeria non-stop, lol. I just really need something fun and cute and escapist that I can binge-read and not think about the world. Love, -Maria 2. It is hot hot HOT and I am craving some winter fairy tale magic. (To be fair, I am almost always in the mood for this sort of thing, but it is Very Hot.) I was the Children’s Book Buyer at an indie bookstore until recently, meaning I am quite well-versed in the Middle Grade and YA options, so I’m searching for a recommendation from the adult side of things. While I loved the quiet magical realism of The Snow Child, I’m looking for something more along the lines of The Bear and the Nightingale or Spinning Silver. Thank you thank you! -Hana 3. Hello Get Booked team! Your podcast is one of my absolute favorites – I am an avid listener. Do you have any recommendations for comics, short stories, chapter books, etc. featuring Superman and/or Spiderman for reluctant beginner readers? If possible, I would like to avoid those “easy reader” / “I can read” books. I’d love books that explore these superheroes’ origin stories in a kid-friendly way, in addition to fighting bad guys. The reader I have in mind is 6 years old and will try to read above their level if really interested (but is currently struggling). I told this reader a bit about Superman’s origin story myself like a bedtime story and they were hooked. I’d really like to foster a love for books and reading this way, if possible. -Sel 4. I’m a bookseller in quarantine trying to keep my guilty pleasures book club active and engaged as we have not been able to meet in person since March (we are a notorious loud, slightly tipsy, and chatty group). We read YA, more on the Sarah J Maas end of the scale, and this year we’ve tried to highlight different heritage months in our picks (Black History, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander, Pride Month, etc). I’m running into trouble finding us something for November, when we’d like to read an Indigenous / First Nations pick. All the ones I have found skew younger or are contemporary, but I’d really like to give them a few Fantasy options. Some picks they’ve loved in the past include THE BONE WITCH and SADIE. We have some members with mental health and PTSD triggers, so please give any content warnings you deem relevant. We try to pick two months in advance so if you can get back to me by September that would be great but if not I’d still love some recs I can pass on to them. Thanks so much! -Faith 5. I have been experiencing a lot of loss over the past few months.  That paired with all the pandemic madness and some personal relationship issues I feel like I need a good pick me up book. I’m looking for something that will help me know it is ok to feel what I feel.  Maybe something with a lot of feels that I can cry with.  Fiction or non-fiction is ok.  Just a good emotional book that will help me release some feelings and feel  better after reading. -Noelle 6. The All Souls Trilogy is one of my all-time favorites, but I haven’t been able to find anything similar that’s not YA! Fantasy, magic, romance, and a little bit sexy. -Aislinn 7. I am looking for historical fiction for my daughter.  She is starting school virtually this year and had a hard time with virtual school in the spring.  I am looking to supplement her social studies content with some books that can bring that subject to life for her.  This year her curriculum includes history and culture from Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe and Australia.  She is 11 and going into 6th grade.  Last year she studied WW1 and WW2, and read a few books on those subjects (Diary of Ann Frank, My Friend the Enemy), so we do not need anything involving that time period in Europe. She loves mysteries, horror, and pretty much every graphic novel I’ve given her to read.  Bonus points if my advanced 3rd grader can also read these recs. A few of her favorites are the Nancy Drew series, Bloom by Kenneth Oppel, everything by Raina Telgemeier, El Deafo by Cece Bell, and the Greek Myth graphic novel series by George O’Connor.
