Listen Now to Best of Futures 1 This summer we are traveling quite a bit. As I write this we are still in the wilds of Quebec, Canada, soon to head for Maui, Hawaii.  And Mrs. Future will then be heading to Ireland, Portugal, and Spain!  We will attempt a live transmission at some point on our various journeys, but meanwhile we have 15 years of some amazing content to draw upon for shows while we are away.  Instead of replaying full live shows, we are taking clips of our various guests and combining them with outtakes of others to create a dynamic interplay of thoughts and ideas that are quite engaging and relevant to what’s happening now.  Enjoy and you’ll hear from us in the future!

Folk Alliance International Takeover Part 3 - Patterson Barrett and Beth Bombara

On February 3, 2023, I presented a four-hour edition of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show, interviewing an array of local, national and international touring artists that were in Kansas City for the annual Folk Alliance International Conference. Next up is Patterson Barrett from Austin, Texas and Beth Bombara from St. Louis. Patterson first came to my attention about 8 years ago at the Folk Alliance Conference as the side man for Songwriter Stephanie Urbina Jones. As you'll hear, we've stayed in touch over the years and I learn something new about Patterson with each visit. During this conversation, he casually drops new information to me that at the age of 17 he played pedal steel, dobro and guitar on Jerry Jeff Walker's rendition of Guy Clark's L.A. Freeway for Walker's first release on MCA Records. He has helped anchor the Buddy Miller House Band during an Americanafest Awards Show at the Ryman Auditorium. I had the privilege of attending those Awards Show for a good number of years and the house band was always on fire! Not long after arriving in Austin, he formed the band Partners In Crime, which included Buddy and Julie Miller, sometimes referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Americana Music….releasing one album on their own label, Criminal Records. In the years since, Patterson produced some of Hal Ketchum's earliest demos, served in Al Kooper's back-up band, and performed before 10,000 festival-goers as Chuck Berry's pianist. He accompanied Nancy Griffith on Austin City Limits, legendary Austin singer Lou Ann Barton in music clubs around the country, and Buddy Miller on his Your Love And Other Lies CD, and more recently, on the Buddy & Jim CD. He has a continuing collaboration with Stephanie Urbina Jones as her accompanist, musical director and producer, including work with her Honky Tonk Mariachi project, appearing on the Grand Ole Opry multiple times. In addition to years of supporting other talented artists in every format imaginable, Barrett has maintained a career as a recording artist in his own right. Around 2015, I was introduced to Beth Bombara through a mutual musical friend, Sky Smeed. Although based in Missouri, Beth has spent much of her adulthood on the road, carving out her own award-winning mix of vintage folk and electric roots-rock. She's been a solo artist, a bandleader, and an occasional side musician for other artists. Her songs live in the same world as greats like Petty and Dylan; Gillian and Joni, and grow up like trees drawing nourishment from their roots music. But she never, ever sounds like the "typical" artist who claims these influences; Bombara to zig where someone else might zag, making harder or gentler turns, brushing up against jazz or taking rock toward its fulfillment.” - The Columbia Tribune It's been my pleasure to include Beth for the last three years now as part of the Heartland Song Network Private Showcase line up. Enjoy these conversations and performances with Patterson Barrett and Beth Bombara in Hour 3 of the Folk Alliance Takeover of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show.

Four men are facing federal charges in connection to the mounting count of 53 migrants who died of heat exhaustion after being abandoned in a tractor trailer near San Antonio this week - including the driver of the truck, who tried to pass himself off as a migrant himself when confronted by police. The first Texas city on record saying it will not enforce new abortion restrictions in Texas isn't Austin - it's Denton. Following the closure of Jacob's Well this week comes the closing of Hamilton Pool, also due to high bacteria levels in the water. Meanwhile, after months of pleading for new lifeguards, some of them have not been getting paid on time by Austin's Parks and Recreation Department. Austin's Music Commission is requesting that the City Council expedite the deployment of the Live Music Fund to an earlier date than the one currently planned, next July. Stream Realty Partners, the company heavily invested in revitalizing East 6th Street has unveiled plans for new live music venues in several spaces it controls, including the former Buffalo Billiards and Dirty Dog spaces. SXSW is planning an offshoot event in Sydney, Australia, in October of 2023 (it's spring down there at that time). Travis and Williamson counties both made U.S. News' new rundown of the 500 healthiest counties in the country - Collin County ranked highest in Texas at #50, and Williamson significantly outranked Travis, at #121 and #295, respectively. Thursday live music roundup for the weekend: Friday shows include album releases with Sir Woman album release at The Parish and Big Bill at Hotel Vegas, a TC Superstar tour kickoff show at Cheer Up Charlie's, Bigg Robb at Antone's as part of their 47th Anniversary run, and a Nancy Griffith tribute show at the Cactus Cafe. Saturday catch Antone's anniversary fun with Jimmie Vaughan, a heavy 2nd Anniversary party at Hold Out Brewing with Holy Death Trio and Eagle Claw, and Los Pendejos del Norte featuring Ed Miller of Sun Radio and Rich Brotherton of the Robert Earl Keen band at New World Deli. Sunday Fleet Foxes are at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, and the Antone's anniversary features Miss Lavelle's Birthday Bash. And Monday the 4th, Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic rolls into Q2 Stadium for the first time with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Tyler Childers, Allison Russell, Steve Earle & the Dukes, and tons more. Austin weather: a tropical disturbance in the northwestern Gulf Of Mexico is expected to dump rain on the Texas coast, and there's hope some of that will come our way, but officially our rain chances for this week are dropping and our hopes for significantly cooler temps are fading too. Highs Thursday and Friday of 96, rain chance now down to 20% for Friday. We're back to upper 90's by Saturday, and then back to what looks like a long string of triple digit days starting Tuesday.

Trackliste:Stephen Sondheim (f. 1930) Glynis Johns: “Send in the Clowns” (1973) Lloyd Price (f. 1933): “Stagger Lee” (1958) Lee “Scratch” Perry (f. 1936) The Upsetters feat. Did you know that when playing your instrument, that there's actually a question of ergonomics? Beyond getting the best sound possible, is there a better way to hold your instrument? Is your posture the best for you when performing? Are you standing or sitting correctly? How about that pain-related playing you experience after long hours of practicing or performing. Are the bad habits you've picked up over the years, or even in the past year of the pandemic lockdown, fixable. Does the imbalance of your instrument cause you physical pain? Angela McCuiston is here to explain it all to us. We talk about taking care of your body, along with taking care of your hearing, all things that musicians (or anyone who works in the music industry, for that matter) should pay close attention to. Angela McCuiston is a NASM-CPT, CES, SFS, and CETI-CES (Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist, Senior Fitness Specialist and Cancer Exercise Specialist) and owner of Music Strong, a business that specializes in personal fitness training for musicians.  Winner of the 2007 NFA Piccolo Master class, Angela received her Master of Music in Flute Performance from Florida State University and her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Tennessee Technological University. An avid performer, Angela is Assistant Principal/Piccolo of Sinfonia Gulf Coast of Destin, Nashville Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, and Nashville Flute Choir. Joining the military soon after 9/11, she recently became a member of the 313th Army Band in Huntsville, AL, after completing a 16-year tenure in the 129thArmy Band in Nashville, TN.  In addition to her solo performances, she has performed with such celebrities as Kristen Chenowith, Pink Martini, Jamie Bernstein, Morgan James, Chris Mann, Nancy Griffith, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes.  As a trainer, Angela maintains several training locations in Nashville and travels to give her workshops and presentations, most notably presenting at the National Flute Association Conventions in Salt Lake City, UT; Las Vegas, NV, Washington, D.C., and Orlando, FL. Among her recent workshops, she has traveled to present at Arizona State University, Florida State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Ft. My guest today is Marc Frigo a mix engineer, recording engineer, and producer based out of Nashville, TN with multi-platinum credits and over 29 years of experience.  Marc started out in his hometown of Chicago in 1990 but relocated to Nashville, TN in early 1991 where he became a staff engineer at Woodland Studios. It was there that he was able to work with and learn from some of the best engineers and producers in the world, such as producers Peter Collins, Don Was, T-Bone Burnett, Tony Brown, Josh Leo, Jay Joyce and engineers David Leonard, Steve Marcantonio, Rick Will, Bob Bullock, Steve Tillisch, Bill Schnee, and so many others that were great mentors.  During his days as an assistant engineer, he worked on projects with Bob Seger, Keith Urban, Restless Heart, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, The Divinyls, Nancy Griffith, Larry Carlton, Gillian Welch, and the list goes on.  Eventually moving out of assisting and into engineering, Marc engineered and/or mixed projects for The Indigo Girls, K.T. Oslin, Nelson, Dez Dickerson (of Prince & The Revolution) Israel Houghton, Jewel, and Future Leaders of the World to name a few. Marc also recorded and mixed the "Larry Boy" theme song featuring Nicole C. Mullen for the popular Veggie Tales children's video series, which went on to sell 15 million copies. Lucy started out singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. The New York Times noted, "Easy to predict stardom for her." But, convinced her calling was in another direction, Lucy dropped it all to become a clinical psychologist. But she never stopped singing. She was often pulled back in to the studio by her friends - now with record deals -, singing on records with Sean Coleman, Nancy Griffith, Suzanne Vega on 'Pretty in Pink' the movie, and commercial credits for Chevy with "Heartbeat of America." Her voice has remained in high demand by her peers.  Her new album, "Everyday Street," features songs about family, loss, and discovery. Secrets of the Motherworld
12: “The reason I’m writing is because nobody ever talks about the heartbreak of estrangement between a mother and a daughter”

Secrets of the Motherworld

Here’s the story we discuss this week:   “The long story would be a book but the short story goes something like this.  When my daughter was 16 she moved in with her out of work boyfriend. Two months later she was pregnant with her first child and this is when the domestic violence began. I begged her to come home and leave but she chose to stay, although she did escape a couple of times and the police and courts were involved due to the beatings she received whilst being pregnant.  This all happened 16 years ago and today it feels like she died back then although I never gave up trying to contact her despite her silent replies. And so I embarked on therapy myself, including reading, studying domestic violence and personality disorders in great depth. Occasionally, when I did bump into her without him in tow I would ask her to go for a coffee and try to talk to her about what had happened between us but she wouldn’t listen. I have two daughters and she stopped talking to her younger sister too, which continues to cause pain.  What hurts so much is that I’m estranged from my own mother as she was from hers. For context, I’ve been working as a psychotherapist for 25 years and have explored my heartache in many ways, including unpacking dreams, studying myths, family constellation workshops and everything else I can think of to ease the pain and move towards acceptance.  The reason I’m writing is because nobody ever talks about the heartbreak of estrangement between a mother and a daughter and how some wrongly assume that there must be something inherently wrong with the family, and yet this is not the case as my daughter was loved, encouraged and nurtured throughout her childhood. Sixteen years later my daughter remains in the same relationship and has had subsequent children and still doesn’t talk to us. Thank you for reading.” Stella mentions the Nancy Griffith song ‘The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNBeP8dzYdg
