It's More Than Physical - Neurokinetic Therapy with David Weinstock

This week, I chatted with David Weinstock, the brilliant mind behind Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT). We dive into the fascinating journey of how NKT came to be, how it's integrated into movement professions like Pilates, and why understanding proper breathing and diaphragm function is so crucial. We also talk in-depth about the role of the psoas muscle in core stability and why it's important to assess whether it's overworking or underworking before diving into treatment. David shares his knowledge on how the psoas connect with other muscles and systems in the body, such as the diaphragm and the limbic system. We also touch on the emotional side of things—how trauma impacts movement—and how addressing this can be key to successful outcomes. David's take on failure and how it's a vital part of learning really resonated with me, as well as his perspective on the joy and reward that comes from helping others and making a positive impact. Takeaways: Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) is an amazing system that focuses on how movement patterns connect, using biomechanics and neuroscience to assess and rehabilitate both acute and chronic injuries. NKT Meets Pilates: NKT is a perfect complement to Pilates, helping to spot and correct compensatory movement patterns and ensure optimal movement quality. The Importance of Proper Breathing: David talks about how breathing needs to involve a 360-degree expansion of the ribcage (yes, all around!) for the diaphragm to function at its best and how this affects core stability. Psoas Muscle Misunderstandings: The psoas is such an important part of the core, but often misunderstood. Stretching may not be the answer; instead, we need to figure out if it's underworking or overworking before deciding on any treatment. Body Interconnectedness: Every part of the body is connected, and understanding this is essential for effective movement therapy. The psoas, diaphragm, and even the limbic system all work together in fascinating ways. Emotional Trauma's Role: Trauma doesn't just affect the mind; it affects movement. Addressing the limbic system is crucial for deeper healing and more effective treatment. Embracing Failure: David's insight into failure was refreshing—it's a necessary part of learning and growth, something I think we can all relate to. The Reward of Helping Others: David reminds us of the deep fulfillment that comes from helping people heal and make positive changes in their lives. About David Weinstock: David has been at the forefront of manual therapy since 1973, after graduating from Johns Hopkins and traveling throughout Central and South America, learning from native healers. He co-founded the Institute of Conscious Bodywork in California and developed NeuroKinetic Therapy® in 1985. His book, "NeuroKinetic Therapy, an Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing," has become an essential read for anyone in the bodywork field. He teaches internationally, sharing his knowledge with Pilates instructors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and many others. David also runs a private practice in Marin County, where he treats everyone from athletes to weekend warriors, offering personalized treatments to help them recover and thrive. In his free time, David enjoys hiking, skiing, and playing tennis, and he loves connecting with people from around the world, always sharing knowledge and learning from others. Today on the Holistic Dentistry Show, Dr. Sanda speaks to Dr. Bryn Aitken-Young, an Integrated Physical Therapist, about the healing power of neurokinetic therapy, how it relates to dentistry, and how it eliminates pain so that the body can move more.  Neurokinetic therapy supercharges physical therapy by treating both the immediate source of pain in the body as well as treating the source of the dysfunctional movement in the brain. This technique can be applied to any area of the body experiencing pain for long-lasting results. Truly incredible! Dr. Aitken-Young shares how her work pairs brilliantly with dentists, such as for helping patients with TMJD or breathing problems. In fact, Dr. Aitken-Young believes that, like a dentist's biannual check-up, a neurokinetic therapist should also be consulted often for preventative movement checkups. Charles Clay interacts with the world from a grounded, holistic perspective. But, his confidence was not always as strong as it is today. Though Charles grew up in picturesque rural Washington, his childhood wasn't a fairytale. Clay's parents divorced when he was four years old. This trauma colored his future beliefs on nearly everything: confidence, purpose, money, and career. It took another trauma, a skiing accident in 2008, for Charles to face his inherited internal blockers. While suffering from back pain after his accident, Charles discovered NeuroKinetic Therapy®, or NKT. Inspired by the teachings from NKT, Clay created new programs – The InnerPeace Process and The Laser Focus Method – that he uses with his clients today.  Pain can serve as a powerful indicator in our bodies and our minds, like a check engine light alerting us that something is not quite right. Charles believes that we often overlook the messages that our bodies send us. He implements The InnerPeace Process with his clients to unlock the root cause of their unease and help free them from it. Often, physical pain shows up as a symptom of unresolved emotional problems under the surface: anger, stress, and resentment.  Charles challenges you to ask: what is my body telling me? And what should I do about it? From his experience, Charles knows that when you're aligned with your emotions, existing patterns are challenged. After his parents' divorce, he inherited two money mindsets. From his dad, that money was a roller coaster. From his mom, there was never enough money to go around. Understanding the origin of his money mindset allowed Charles to own his past patterns and gave him a boost to create a new future for his finances.  On this episode of Money Loves Women, join Dr. Deborah Ekstrom and Charles Clay to learn about the power of uncovering the root cause of our pain, and unlearning and reshaping our money mindsets. How to get back to our home base which is inner peace. The incredible joy and honor that his new daughter, Sofia, has brought into his life. Common stereotypes of what doing the inner work should look like vs what it actually is for the person doing it. What his specific awareness process is and how it has shifted since becoming a father. The deep underlying anxiety that he had for years and how he became adapted to it until he was ready to start letting it go. Different tactics he tried from self-sabotage to healthy lifestyle choices to let go of his underlying anxiety but it intensified the harder he tried until he welcomed it into his life. The moment he committed himself to start breaking the relationship he had with external substances and how he was able to do that when he started to improve his emotional intelligence.   [18:00] How To Step Into A Creator Consciousness How he was able to step into a creator consciousness over focusing on constantly consuming. Why Josh believes that the 'clean slate' is an illusion and we are imperfect beings on purpose. Charles' system to set yourself up for wins every time you make these agreements with yourself. The power of tapping into the energy and emotions you feel when you crave a habit you want to break like sugar. Why you should always celebrate the little victories even if it's something like 1 day without sugar. Unpacking why self-doubt is really a Protector archetype and why you should give it a persona/character/voice and welcome it into your day. Why the inner work process is actually really simple as you dive into where you are feeling stuck, noticing where that shows up in your body, and then becoming curious about it. The abandonment he felt when his parents divorced and his mother left when he was four years old. How his repressed anger and the belief that he's not good enough was created when his mother left. The moment he was gifted with finally being able to sit with his repressed anger and buried emotions. How physical movement became key for his emotional intelligence practice. The fact that all of our biggest adversities always lead to something great. How past obstacles can help us maintain a level of calmness, come back home to ourselves, and realize what's actually important. The opportunity we have to no longer allow fear to take control of our mind and body. How we can heal as a collective in 2020. What steps you can take to choose creative consciousness over consumer consciousness. How we've been conditioned as a society just to consume without questioning. The fact that people with brilliant marketing for their wellness and health services have not actually done the work themselves. What you should look for when seeking out someone for emotional intelligence and spiritual development. Who Charles himself looks for when seeking a new coach to help guide him. Why he always tunes into his intuition and the answers that start showing up to help him with his problem. What wellness practices he does to sharpen his intuition and awareness skills. Unpacking what energetic sovereignty is and how to tap into it to fully embody each and every cell, molecule, and atom of your being. Unpacking his relationship with his father growing up and how life events lead them to bond and create this space for love. The positive action and focus he and his father took on when they found out that his father had Stage 4 cancer and 2 months to live. What he realized about himself and his father as he helped him live for another two years. The process of giving full permission to let go as his father laid on his deathbed. Why he was called in the past to plant medicine and DMT to experience life outside of the human body. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho What is revealed to us when we witness life and death. How to let go of intellectualizing life and just being present with it. Why it's courageous to step up and ask for help right now if you need it because we're not meant to do it alone. What we can do to create heaven on earth according to Charles: Everything moving forward has to be built on a foundation of what's in the greater good of all living beings including us and Mother Earth; otherwise it will crumble. breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show   A Path For The Golden Age "The whole collective right now with everything that's going on in the world, all this so-called chaos, is all happening for us and you can choose; are you going to keep consuming the fear which is the information that you choose to give your energy and attention? Notice how that feels in your body. I really commend everybody that's showing up and having the courage to dive into some of these emotions and learn what they can from this inner journey right now because that is actually helping heal the collective and amazing things are going to come from this. The whole world right now is on a path for the Golden Age and in order for that transformation to occur, it's going to be uncomfortable at times and we're all experiencing that in our own way." - Charles Clay   Are Mindset Hacks Overrated? "Think about where your attention is going on a daily basis. Are they really going towards what you want to create; this list of ideas and things that you want to bring to the world before you die? How much energy and time are you giving those? How much time are you spending tuning in to allow more of those to flow in? When we come back to that natural state of inner peace, then we're in a receptive mode where we can receive those dreams, inspiration, and amazing ideas from Mother Gaia. Operating from that place is different from having to use a million mindset hacks to motivate yourself to get your butt off the couch and actually do something. Either way will get you there, I just prefer the inspired action approach simply because the quality of energy that I'm creating with is so much more exciting and fun." - Charles Clay     Intuition Is Medicine   "I always tune into my intuition; it's our own medicine that we are all gifted with. Sometimes it's harder to listen to it than others but with your intuition, you can navigate and notice what comes up on your radar. What you want help with, what you are sick of, and what aspect of your life you're ready to change. Then notice as those answers start showing up like puzzle pieces that start filling in. Next, really tune into the intelligence within your body and what feels intuitively expansive and going to help you on your path or is more constrictive and doesn't feel aligned. Really paying attention to those cues from your body can help steer you to the right guides, coaches, and direction on your journey." - Charles Clay     Links From Today's Show  The Laser Focus Method 263 Charles Clay M Powered Men’s Group Training and Mastermind CURED Nutrition Caroline Myss 368 Bobbi Vogel Marci Lock The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho How Death Opens the Masculine Heart Neurokinetic Therapy Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Charles Clay Facebook Instagram    About Charles Clay Charles Clay is a Men’s Empowerment Coach, Dynamic Speaker, Published Author and Founder of  M Powered Men’s Group Training and Mastermind. She is currently working towards her Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in order to deepen her comprehension and mastery for her patients benefit. Hilary was a two-time NCAA Division 1 All American Nordic Ski Racer. She raced with the U.S. Ski Team for 3 years. As a competitive skier, Hilary overtrained and acupuncture was the one thing that brought her back to a whole, healthy person and athlete. She continues to train and compete in ski races, marathons, and triathlons. She competed in the Ironman World Championship and the Boston Marathon. Her competitive experience provides her with unique understanding of what pushing the body to its limit means and how acupuncture can aid the athlete’s body. Please help us welcome JADA Studios newest team member! Sophia is a licensed acupuncturist in Minnesota, with a background in neuroscience, hormonal balance and fertility. With a focus on the nervous system, Sophia is motivated by exploring and strengthening the relationship between an individual’s conscious experience of their body and the body’s deeper operative systems. She seeks to work with patients to discover how to harness this relationship for control and precision in athletic pursuits and everyday life. In the past, Sophia competed in swimming, diving and dance. However, her appreciation and passion for acupuncture came from personal tragedy. Acupuncture was crucial to her full recovery from a snowboarding accident and a life-threatening car accident from which she had to relearn how to walk, swallow and dress. She is now dedicated to helping others experience the same profound impact of acupuncture. Hilary, Sophia, and I discuss how they help others enhance their overall well-being, their personal journeys to well-being, and their advice for other entrepreneurs. Enjoy!

Today’s guest is Perry Nickelston.  Perry is a chiropractic physician with primary focus on performance enhancement, corrective exercise, and metabolic fitness nutrition.  He is certified and trained as a Functional Movement Specialist (FMS) and Selective Functional Movement Assessment Specialist (SFMA).  Perry is a master fitness trainer with over 25 years of experience in the industry, and runs the “Stop Chasing Pain” podcast. I’ve personally been on a journey for some time in the realms of corrective exercise and “activation/reset” based therapeutic means for helping the body achieve its original, or optimal, patterning.  At a Neurokinetic Therapy seminar (I completed level 1 and 2), which was a really great course, a name that frequently came up at the seminar was Perry Nickelston.  Ever since, I’ve been looking into Dr. Perry’s work, how I can better integrate concepts of corrective exercise into my own work, and also how these concepts tie into sport performance. This show has great ideas for any strength coach engaging in the host of modern corrective and activation based performance paradigms.  It also has important implications that originate in therapy, but stretch out into every aspect of full blown athletic performance programming.  On the show today, we’ll discuss ideas of “the core”, pain science, the minimal dose in treatment and corrective exercise, making corrective exercise more “sticky”, and more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Perry’s background What is the core really when it comes to athletic function and movement What the science is saying about what pain actually is Why Perry doesn’t inflict pain in his treatment methods Factors that make corrective exercise stick and change technique over time The minimum effective dose in rehab and corrective exercise Function, dis-function and the nocebo effect The brain, safety and performance Quotes “Pain is the last thing you feel in any injury mechanism that’s not traumatic” “Human beings naturally like to overcomplicate everything” “Pain is not correlated to the amount of tissue damage that you have” “You can decrease someone’s pain by the nature of how you talk to them, how you touch them” “I don’t really care if you feel better after (treatment), what I’m looking for is “does it last”, because anything can make a temporary change on your nervous system, but if it doesn’t stick, to me it’s useless, and what I’m finding is, the harder you go on your nervous system but the more it pushes back.  Not when I’m working on somebody, I don’t inflict any pain or any discomfort on any of the releases or movements that I’m doing” “If you inflict pain on your body when I’m trying to teach you a different movement pattern, it won’t let you learn it.  Pain takes you into survival mode, and habit and compensation” “If your nervous system and your brain feel threat in any way, it shuts off learning. Period.” “I don’t even call it muscle testing anymore because the brain doesn’t think like that, I call it pattern testing.  I’m looking for how your brain can pattern external force” “If you want to be a success, whatever that means for you, you have to embrace the willingness to look stupid” “One of the biggest things that helps (corrective exercise) stick is not doing too much, too hard, too soon” “(For fixing movement) I’ll put you down on the ground, and I get you into these ground based movement patterns, where you feel safe and you feel stable, because that’s where you learned to move in the first place” “When I make you move, I’m looking at if your nervous system is freaking out” “I don’t have a problem with the placebo effect…. this placebo stuff is beyond ridiculous!” “I don’t use the word stability anymore, I use the word safety.
