Today on the show we have Oscar® nominated documentarians Betsy West & Julie Cohen.Betsy West (Director/Producer) is an Academy Award®-nominated Emmy winning director/producer of RBG (Magnolia, Participant, CNN Films, 2018), along with Julie Cohen. Most recently, she and Cohen directed My Name is Pauli Murray (Participant/Amazon Studios), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021.Betsy was executive producer of the MAKERS PBS/AOL documentary and digital series about the modern women's movement, and the feature documentary The Lavender Scare (PBS, 2019). As an ABC News producer and executive producer of the documentary series Turning Point, she won 21 Emmy awards. Betsy is the Fred W. Friendly Professor Emerita at Columbia Journalism School.Julie Cohen (Director/Producer) is the Academy Award® nominated, Emmy winning director and producer of RBG (Magnolia, Participant, CNN Films, 2018) along with Betsy West. Her film My Name is Pauli Murray, also directed with West, premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.Previous films she's directed include The Sturgeon Queens (7th Art Releasing; Berlinale, 2015; Best of the Fest, San Francisco Jewish Film Festival), and Ndiphilela Ukucula: I Live to Sing (2014 New York Emmy Award for Best Arts Program). Before she started making documentaries, Julie was a longtime staff producer for NBC News. She's been an enthusiastic amateur cook and baker ever since her parents bought her a Cuisinart for her bat mitzvah in the 1970s.Their current film is called JULIA. The film tells the remarkable story of the groundbreaking cookbook author and television superstar who forever changed the way Americans think about food, about television, and even about women.Using a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival video, personal still photos, first-person narratives, and cutting-edge, mouth-watering food cinematography, the documentary will trace Julia Child's surprising path, from her struggles to create and publish the revolutionary ‘instant' classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961, Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group), to her empowering personal story of a woman in her 50s, finding her calling as an unlikely television sensation. This is the first feature-length documentary solely devoted to Julia Child, and will illuminate her casual upheaval of the male-dominated culinary and television worlds.Almost single-handedly, Julia Child upended the mythology that women could not hold their own at the highest levels of creative gastronomy, and that the only women Americans wanted to see on TV were young, submissive, and conventionally beautiful.JULIA is produced with the full cooperation of Julia Child's friends, family, and the Julia Child Foundation.  It follows the highly-acclaimed documentary, RBG, executive produced by CNN Films, directed and produced by West and Cohen through their company Storyville Films, and edited by Carla Gutierrez, who will also edit JULIA.The film comes out Nov 12 in-theatres NY/LA followed by nationwide expansion. In this episode we not only discuss the making of Julia and RBG but also cover how they approach documentary, the craft of tell stories and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Betsy West & Julie Cohen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Michelle shares how being ruthlessly bullied as a child stayed with her into adulthood, expressing as internalized racism, rage, and ultimately a deep sadness that she has transformed into fighting for a more diverse world. We talk about the damaging effects of reducing Asians to cliches and stereotypes rather than recognizing us as full human beings.  As we acknowledge that there's no quick and easy answer to how we go beyond DEI optics and checkboxes, Michelle emphasizes that one thing is very clear — we have to uplift ALL marginalized cultures. We have to stay out of our comfort zones and keep pushing each other forward and lifting each other up, because an entire ecosystem is required to effect change. In honor of #AAPI #heritage month, I was invited to share my story with the #AsianAmerican audiences living in NY + LA. But perhaps, this story will resonate with you as well :) (continued from previous segment) 英文里有句话说,a different language gives you a different view of the world. 小的时候上学的时候,老师就会跟我们说,如果你去assume,就是你去认为别人的想法,你就会 “make  an ass out of you and me” 。 To be heard, to be seen。

In honor of #AAPI #heritage month, I was invited to share my story with the #AsianAmerican audiences living in NY + LA. But perhaps, this story will resonate with you as well :) One of the first books my father gave me was Adventures of Alice in Wonderland. I was 5 at the time, going to school in England, and identifying very much with Alice's adventures and quest to know herself, who am I? The culture gap is like this rabbit hole that drops you down a crazy chasm to a battlefield of identities and values that are often in conflict with one another. This has been, and remains where I live my life. This is where I grew up. The first time I was asked to write my story was a Grade 5 writing competition. I was handpicked by our Chinese language teacher to enter the competition as the class representative, which came as a shock, because up until that point, Mandarin was my weakest subject. Out of all the given options, the only topic I could comfortably write about - without being wrong - was “My Story”. What kind of a story would an 11 year old have? You might ask. I was the only Chinese student (out of almost 2000) who had joined the school from being abroad - I had failed the entrance exams (math and Chinese), so I was placed into second grade instead of third, where I had come from. Where I was from, I was just beginning to study French and the violin, subjects which did not exist in the Chinese school. Everyone thought I was weird - from my clothes to my (non-metal) pencil case. There were those who were curious about me - and they welcomed me, surrounding my desk (to look at my foreign objects and… me, the foreign object), whenever there was a class break. Then, there are the ones who called me, “traitor”, because I had come from England. Fair enough. My mother told me that my teacher told her that I spoke incredibly slowly and read Chinese like a foreigner. I couldn't tell, but what I do remember is that for a long time, I pronounced music as “yin le” instead of “yin yue”, because my dance teacher's name was “le le”, the same characters, and I had no idea that characters could look the same but be pronounced differently - this concept was non-existent in the English world that conditioned my past years. Even as an 11 year old, I noticed sharp differences between the cultures, expectations, expressions, and therefore difficulties, misunderstandings, and moments of unintended humor, in communications. All of which I recorded on the pages of the writing competition. When the bell rang, I was beyond relieved. I was completely stunned when my laundry list of cultural misadventures ended up winning first prize. I was asked to read the piece out loud over the school PA system. That was the first moment I was made aware that by simply sharing my experiences - what I saw, what I heard, I was already translating culture and showing people - even, or rather, especially Chinese adults, “the big people”, the very real things they couldn't have understood, fathomed, or imagined to be possible before.

Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms, and Joe Yanick are the trio behind Yellow Veil, a NY/LA-based worldwide film sales and distribution company with a focus on horror and boundary-pushing genre cinema. Their slate includes Luz, I Trapped the Devil, Blood Quantum, The Cleansing Hour, Hellbender, Depraved, Sator, and most recently, Gaspar Noe's Lvx Æterna.  In this conversation, Hugues, Justin, and Joe get into how they came together as a company, keys to successfully producing boundary-pushing indie movies, and what they look for in the movies they produce. Without further ado, please enjoy this conversation with Yellow Veil.  Here are some key takeaways from this interview.  Unanimous love is a must. As a company, the guys have different tastes, but the DNA of their slate requires a mutual love of every movie they put out. Producing movies is grueling, lengthy, complicated, and backbreaking work. If you're not all in and don't have passion to make it through the tough times, you're simply not going to pull your weight. Because of this, Hughes, Joe, and Justin all agreed that they need to all love each movie they work on as their mutual passion will motivate them to push each movie through and forward to completion.  Trust your gut. When selecting movies, Hughes, Joe, and Justin don't use any Moneyball metrics or read Hollywood Reporter headlines to see what's popular and then make films based on perceived audience interest or what's considered hot right now. Instead, they trust their gut. If they see a movie that's totally off the wall and unlike anything they've ever seen, they rely on an intangible intuitive gut feeling to tell them whether or not to pull the trigger on it. The danger of always relying on data and proven formulas is you'll ultimately make derivative movies. However, it's still important to see everything and be aware of what's popular. In the 80s, Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon binge-watched every single horror movie that came out in the previous two years. They didn't do it to see what was popular and then make movies based on the same things. No, instead, they wanted to see what audiences were seeing so they could deliver something completely fresh and different instead of a copycat or coattail riding film, and as a result, they came up with Reanimator. All of this comes down to gut instinct, not what's trendy.  Support first-timers. All you first-timers, listen up, Yellowveil loves working with first-time directors. They claim that there's a blissful ignorance of what you're allowed to do and not allowed to do, which makes many first films very exciting and different.  Embrace that in yourself. Don't try to make your movie fit into a box - the public needs to see your unique raw vision in a way that hasn't been tampered with. So all of you who are insecure about your lack of experience can rest assured that this insecurity could very well be your greatest strength as a director.    Thank you for listening! Back when we were job hunting early in our careers, no one mentioned company culture, and we didn’t look at company culture as a ‘thing.’ We looked for open jobs and took them when hired! These days, a company’s culture ranks high on the wish list of many motion design job seekers. Join us as we discuss what makes company culture toxic, or sustainable, and how to recognize aspects of each type. Every company or classroom has a culture, it may be great in a giant corporation, and it could be horrible in a small, seemingly cool, boutique organization. Don’t assume. Do you have some great culture-related work stories? Send them to us, we would love to hear about them. Discussion Points: Let’s first define what culture is in the dictionary It’s definitely challenging to foster culture in our current remote home-based zooms and slack etc.. Motion design work used to be only in NY/LA but now you can work anywhere Great motion design teams can be found in lots of unexpected places, like CashApp Company culture is always changing– and you can influence it when you’re inside Is the company culture “sustainable” or toxic? Some attributes that make for a toxic company environment: Discrimination of any kind: any of the ‘isms’ Unrealistic expectations for work deadlines Constantly in DefCon 1 Mode/putting out fires Burnout Some attributes of a sustainable culture Feeling like you want to be there Anyone can speak up at any time without repercussions Communal spaces to talk, eat, hang out Clear HR policies/regular reviews Clarity of reporting structure– who can you talk to about issues? Ability to manage your personal obligations without repercussions Accessibility to leadership People/leadership saying thank you for all your hard work Do you have some interesting culture
