#165 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Clerks III, Gangs of New York Today's show hits some nostalgic notes. Clerks III is the culmination of Kevin Smith's work since the 1990's, ending his convenience store saga with a story that's referential and odd. Gangs of New York is nostalgic for the three of us, loving the film 20 years ago and still to this day. A harsh and Shakespearean tale about vengeance and the Civil American War. Lastly, we review Wakanda Forever; dealing with the passing of the previous Black Panther and the many plot points that lead to another hidden society.   Next Time: The Menu, The Fabelmans, The Glass Onion     Recent Discoveries Luke: Fruitvale Station Ralf: One Piece: Red, All the Old Knives, Enola Holmes 2, Extra Ordinary, V/H/S 99, All About Evil Oscar: V/H/S 99, All About Evil, The FABLE: The Killer Who Doesn't Kill, RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned, Wendell & Wild     Show Notes 00:00:00 INTRO 00:09:16 Recent Discoveries 00:36:38 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 00:49:05 spoilers 01:03:35 Clerks III 01:18:41 spoilers 01:24:36 Gangs of New York 02:15:31 EXIT

Summary David McCloskey (Twitter; Website) and James Stejskal (Twitter; LinkedIn) join Andrew to discuss writing about espionage. They are both former intelligence officers.   What You'll Learn Intelligence What it is like writing spy fiction as a former practitioner How fact informs fiction Writing as a former analyst compared to as a former operator (James)  Reactions by the intelligence community to practitioners-turned-authors Reflections The heaven and hell of being an author  The process of getting a process And much, much more… Episode Notes Hear two intelligence formers discuss life as current novelists.  Where does fact end, and fiction begin when you are a former CIA officer writing fiction? What parts of your own story bleed into the novel? Are the characters composites of people you knew in your line of work or are they entirely fictional?  To answer these questions and more, this week, I sat down with David McCloskey, former CIA analyst and author of Damascus Station, a book David Petraeus described as “the best spy novel I have ever read,” and James Stejskal, author of Appointment in Tehran, which has been called “a textbook clandestine operation involving…US Army Special Forces and a clandestine CIA Case Officer,” which James would know something about, since he was both.  And… Spy fiction received quite the blow in the space of a 6-month period (Dec 2020-May 2021) which saw the passing of both John Le Carre and Jason Matthews, two formers who served in British and American intelligence. Le Carre was in MI5 and MI6 while Matthews had a long career in the CIA. David and James join a distinguished cast of formers who became novelists, including Ian Fleming, Graham Greene and Dame Stella Rimington.  Quote of the Week "There are far more edits on, short articles I wrote that weren't even going to the president than on the book, so your writing is being critiqued at all levels. I I think when I did write for the PDB [Presidential Daily Brief], I don't think I'm making this up, I believe it was 9 or 10 layers of review. You could probably argue that sometimes that makes it worse, but you have to be able at all stages to roll with the punches and to write and to try to make things very clear." Hello listeners and welcome back to our little pod! For today's review Mike and Matt chat about the Amazon Original All the Old Knives. Not spy thriller topics include The Boys Season 3, Only Fans, and slinging tacos. Do you like spy thrillers loaded with twists and turns that are told completely by flashbacks? Well if you do then All the Old Knives is the perfect film for you. Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton are the shining stars of this film. Their acting is excellent. Laurence Fishburne and Jonathan Pryce also did a great job for the minute or maybe minute and a half they are in the film. All the Old Knives is not a bad movie, it's just nothing special. We have seen this story before, told in as interesting if not more interesting ways. If you are a huge fan of spy thrillers then this is a must watch. If not then it's a pass. Matt awards the film 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Mike with a smidge lower rating gives All the Old Knives 2 out of 5 Reels.     Guess what kids we are definitely hip deep in summer blockbusters! For next week Mike and Matt head back to the theaters to catch the latest Jurassic Park sequel Jurassic World: Dominion. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week! Not air combat training topics include Mike is sick, Happy 80th Ma Hinshaw, and The Boys Season 3. Top Gun: Maverick had super high hopes especially being pushed back multiple years thanks to everyone's new best friend COVID. Mike and Matt are happy to report that it delivered and then some! Top Gun: Maverick is a must see film in the theaters. It is shot incredibly well, has intense action, and a great story. The technical prowess to deliver such incredible real life flying shots is astonishing to say the least. There is also a lovely tribute to Val Kilmer/Iceman. We are not going to spoil anything but we sure do in the podcast. Go see this movie and bring your family and friends, it's worth it! Matt with a record shattering two perfect ratings in a row gives Top Gun: Maverick 5 out of 5 Reels. Mike, back to his old tricks, drops it down a notch awarding the film 4.5 out of 5 Reels.  For next week's podcast Mike and Matt take a break from high flying jets and the movie theaters to review the Amazon Original All the Old Knives starring Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton. Lake Placid – 1999 – ep 128

Old Millennials Remember Movies

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2022 85:05

You might be surprised to learn that the little-seen creature-feature "Lake Placid" contains more sparring between Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Platt than it does giant crocodile mayhem. And it's all the better for it! David E. Kelley, notable creator and writer of courtroom dramas like "The Practice," "Boston Legal" and "Ally McBeal," wrote this Croc Attack flick back in 1999... for reasons unknown. It just seems like a left-field choice, amirite? Oh well, because it's super weird and filled with profanity-infused one-liners from an over-qualified cast, including Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Platt and Gleeson (that "small-town-sheriff" American accent aside). Go for Pullman's lazy charm and stay for the glorious Betty White (RIP) delivering some of the best jabs in the movie in all of maybe five minutes of screen time. She's rooting for the crocodile, obviously. Old Millennials Remember "Lake Placid" Co-hosts Angela and Tyler jump into the water of this comedy/horror oddity, which clocks in at barely 80 minutes (it doesn't need to be longer). Tyler recalls his harsh, teenage-brain first impression of the movie as well as his subsequent reappraisal after countless cable TV viewings. Additionally, Tyler and Angela unravel the bizarre backstory of Fonda's character and try to figure out how the guy who wrote a whole television series about a smart legal professional could reduce a lead character in his high-profile blockbuster to essentially, "Woman no like be outside." The Old Millennials also discuss the film's stellar animatronic crocodile (courtesy of Stan Winston and Co.!), the curiously small body count and all the delightful contradictions of Platt's "mythical croc scholar." Most importantly, we learn that you're supposed to say "Go" before starting Karate. Also discussed on this episode of OMRM: The Batman (2022) The Bubble (2022) All the Old Knives (2022) The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey (Limited series) Better Call Saul (TV series) Russian Doll (TV series) Drive Angry (2011) Ghost Rider/Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2007/2011)

This is a strange week as directors go with opposite ends of the career track represented. We have rather opposite efforts as far as the films as well. A hyperkinetic chase/heist film with a wildly "on" Jake Gyllenhaal, and a slower-than-slow burn spy-focused investigation with Thandie Newton and Chris Pine, neither of whom seem able to emote at all. We'll let you know if you need to catch Ambulance or All the Old Knives, and this week we are also going to give you a quick preview of what's coming up in the next couple of months.

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we take a look at the world of movie and TV heroes. But instead of daring acts of valor, we discuss those heroes who truly aren't very heroic. We're not talking anti-heroes either. Maybe these alleged good guys didn't actually save anyone, or maybe they caused more damage than the villain, or maybe they were constantly bailed out by their friends at Hogwarts. Luke Skywalker, Frodo, Glenda the Good Witch, Rose, and the names keep coming. Whatever the case, we taking a sharp look at whether many of these protagonists deserve the title of "hero". Also on this episode, we are discussing why we need so many thumbs for Netflix, how far deepfake technology has come, reviews of DUAL, All the Old Knives and Ambulance, and much more. On April 8th, Amazon releases the movie adaptation of Olen Steinhauer's All the Old Knives. In today's episode, two of our most knowledgable spy movie experts and Spybrary agents Matthew Bradford and Jack Lescamela chat with author and screenwriter Olen Steinhauer and the director of All The Old Knives, Janus Metz. Hello, and welcome to episode 181 of the Spybrary podcast. Today, I'm delighted to serve you an absolute treat a couple of weeks ago, we received an email from the PR folks over at Amazon Prime asking us if we had any interest in a conversation with author and screenwriter, Oen Steinhauer. Many of, you will know Olen from his previous works, the Tourist series of books or maybe you know him from the hit spy tv series Berlin Station? There's a new movie about to hit Amazon prime, which is an adaptation of Olen Steinhauer's book, All the Old Knives. I know that there are many of you in the Spybrary community who are big fans of that book and are excited for the movie. Not only did the PR team offer us an interview with Olen Steinhauer, but also with the All the Old Knives Director Janus Metz. I thought to myself, I've got to get the big boys on this. I've got to call the real experienced agents that really know their spy movies and TV. So I called upon Our Men in Hollywood. Many of you know them from our Spybrary community. That's Matthew Bradford and Jack Lescamela. And I called him and said, I've got a job for you. So today we bring you that conversation that Our Menn in Hollywood had with Olen Steinhauer and Janus Metz. It's a wide-ranging conversation. They touch on a ton of different topics, Jack and Matthew really knock it out of the park for us here. It's a fascinating conversation that I just know you're gonna enjoy. Just a couple of words of warning, Janus used a couple of F words. So if you're in the car with the kids, or maybe your husband, doesn't like bad language, whatever it may be. He throws me in quite quickly. I couldn't quite edit them out and I didn't want to bleep them, because I just felt that would detract from the conversation. So just a heads up on that. After the conversation, do stick around for, a bit of post-show. Matthew and Jack have a conversation about their interview about All the Old Knives and more with Olen Steinhauer and Janus Metz
