This past offseason the Houston Texans spent their time signing a horde of veteran players to churn the bottom of the roster, change the culture of the team, and maybe, flip them for future draft selections, or help them acquire future compensatory picks. There were two problems. The players they signed weren't very good, and teams don't give up assets for players who aren't very good. Before the buzzer hit, Houston was able to trade Mark Ingram for a 2024 seventh round pick, and Charles Omenihu for a 2023 sixth round pick. Nick Caserio's plan failed. It didn't work. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston discusses the Texans at the trade deadline, and answers your listener questions. Topics include: why Houston traded Omenihu, the problems Houston had moving players at the deadline, why this is indicates Caserio's problems from this past offseason, Deshaun Watson stuck in Houston, if David Culley will be fired at 2-16, the size Nick Caserio's statue should be, which young player has the most to gain from the Omenihu trade, what type of team I want to watch in 2022, and the rest of your questions. Texas football has started to make its return to the Forty Acres as the Longhorns prepare to begin voluntary summer workouts leading up to fall camp. But the protocols the players are going through this summer look far different than in previous years. The Longhorns’ return to practice includes players being tested for coronavirus upon arrival in addition to extensive education on how to safely co-exist with COVID-19. In this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with some of the latest headlines over the last week, including detailed insight into the Longhorns’ return to campus, how the NCAA is working on plans to have an extended fall camp period, which could begin in mid-July and Tom Herman and the Longhorns’ continued response to racial injustice. The Flagship then welcomes in a very special guest this week in former Longhorn and current roster member of the Houston Texans Charles Omenihu. The 2018 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year winner opens up on both the NFL and nation’s response to the tragic death of George Floyd. Omenihu weighs in on several other topics, including his thoughts on Longhorns who could be poised for a monster season, what he likes about Bill O’Brien and how he took it upon himself to reach out to former Texas receiver Collin Johnson after he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Chip and Taylor then kickoff the 'Love it or Leave it' segment, as this week's topics include if people are sleeping on Keaontay Ingram with all of the younger talent available at running back, how Herman’s message has been received throughout the recent protests and if the Longhorns have another Big 12 D-Lineman of the year candidate on this year’s team. The Flagship Podcast — featuring co-hosts Chip Brown and Taylor Estes with Horns247 publisher Bobby Burton as a frequent contributor — hits the airwaves each Wednesday, and centers around all the latest happenings surrounding the University of Texas and college athletics, with big-name guests joining the show on a weekly basis. The Houston Texans 2019 draft class paid dividends for the team in 2019. Tytus Howard and Max Scharping were primary starters along the offensive line. Charles Omenihu added interior pass rushing production. Cullen Gillaspia was a battle fightin' special teams hero. Well, almost all of it. Lonnie Johnson Jr. was one of the worst cornerbacks in the league. Kahale Warring was too hot and too much of a CHAD for Bill O'Brien. And Xavier Crawford is no longer on the team. In part two of our breakdown ofthe Texans 2019 draft class we discuss if Warring will ever have an impact on the Texans and how he could if he ever does, the surprise pass rushing production from Omenihu and what he can do to take the next step forward, if Crawford would look better as a Seattle Dragon, a Calgary Stampeder, or as a San Antonio Defender, and whether or not Gillaspia can contribute on the offensive side of the ball.
