Here's a quick overview of what you'll learn: The Power of Routines: Routines may seem boring, but they are incredibly effective in creating calm and reducing stress for both parents and children. The Science Behind Routines: Predictability in routines helps reduce anxiety and improve behaviour by setting clear expectations. Implementing Effective Routines: Start Small: Focus on one routine at a time to avoid overwhelming your child. Visual Timetables: Use visual aids to help children remember and follow routines, especially for those with executive functioning challenges. Involving Your Child: Engage your child in creating the routine to give them a sense of ownership and make the process smoother. Transition Strategies: Introduce changes gradually and use social stories or apps to illustrate the benefits of routines. Join us as we explore how to make routines work for your family—and remember, sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective. In this insightful and reflective episode of Parent Like a Psychologist, we dive deep into Jonathan Haidt's provocative and widely discussed book, The Anxious Generation. Host [Your Name], a psychologist and parent, shares a heartfelt and honest review of the book, exploring its key arguments, research foundations, and real-world implications for today's families—especially those raising neurodivergent children. From initial panic to practical reflection, [Your Name] discusses how Haidt's core message—that smartphones and social media have fundamentally reshaped childhood—resonated personally and professionally. You'll hear about the dramatic shift in children's lives around 2010, as play-based, outdoor experiences gave way to screen-dominated, indoor ones, and how this shift has coincided with alarming rises in anxiety, depression, and social disconnection—especially among girls. This episode covers: What Haidt gets right: the importance of unstructured play, the dangers of constant connectivity, the science behind sleep and screen use, and the growing mental health challenges in young people. Where the book may fall short: overemphasis on screens as the sole cause of rising anxiety, lack of attention to other societal pressures, and missing nuance for neurodivergent kids. How these insights apply specifically to ADHD and autistic children, who may rely more heavily on screens for connection, regulation, and learning. Practical tools and mindset shifts for parents, including collaborative screen boundaries, digital nutrition vs. restriction, and modeling healthy tech habits. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by the screen-time battle, curious about how to raise your kids in a digital age, or wondering how to support neurodivergent children in navigating online life, this episode offers thoughtful perspective, personal anecdotes, and evidence-informed guidance. Parent Like a Psychologist is about meeting parents where they are, with empathy, clarity, and strategies that work in the real world—not just the ideal one. So if you've ever threatened to bring back the Nokia just to keep your sanity (guilty!), this episode is for you. In this insightful and reassuring episode of Parent Like a Psychologist, we dive deep into the nuanced relationship between screens, social skills, and our children's development. Leanne candidly shares a funny behind-the-scenes moment (spoiler: technical difficulties!) before expertly guiding parents through the positives and potential pitfalls of screen use in children's social lives. While screens often get a bad reputation, this episode highlights how technology can actually enhance social connection—especially for neurodivergent children—through shared interests, gaming, and online communities. Leanne discusses key research findings, including the "double empathy problem," and explains why it's crucial to focus on the quality of online interactions rather than simply limiting screen time. Listeners will learn practical tips for encouraging meaningful online social experiences, spotting early warning signs of screen-related anxiety or depression, and maintaining a healthy balance between virtual and in-person connections. Referencing expert insights from The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, Leanne empowers parents to become "smart guides" in their children's digital worlds. Packed with compassion, humour, and evidence-based advice, this episode offers a balanced and thoughtful perspective on raising socially connected children in a digital age. In this episode of Parent Like a Psychologist, I explore how autism presents differently in girls and why it is often underdiagnosed. What are the unique challenges faced by girls on the autism spectrum, and how can parents identify the subtle signs? I dive into the concept of "masking" and how girls often mimic social behaviours, making their autism harder to spot. How does autism present differently in girls compared to boys, and why is it often harder to diagnose? What are some of the subtle behaviours that girls use to mask their autism, and how might these behaviours lead to delayed identification or misdiagnosis? In what ways do girls with autism mimic social behaviours, and how does this affect their ability to form meaningful relationships? What signs should parents look for if they suspect their daughter might be on the autism spectrum? How can sensory sensitivities, difficulties in social communication, and struggles with maintaining friendships indicate potential autism? How does anxiety or depression often co-occur with autism in girls, and why might these conditions mask the core autism traits? Why is early diagnosis and intervention important for girls with autism? How can accessing support from psychologists, occupational therapists, or organisations like Yellow Ladybugs and Amaze help in providing the right resources and assistance? What are some effective strategies parents can adopt to support their daughter's emotional regulation and social development? Tune in to find the answers. In this episode I have a conversation with my friend, Dr. Rebekah Diamond. She is a pediatrician and the author of two books: Eat, Sleep, Tantrum, Repeat and Parent Like a Pediatrician. Dr. Diamond bridges the worlds of being a pediatrician with being a parent. She adds a lot of great parental insight into many aspects of parenting from the rigid research to the wild west of the internet. Here's what we talk about with Dr. Diamond: Why the toddler phase is so challenging for so many parents on a daily basis in relation to the advice being given.Parenting advice can be helpful but you can take the pieces that feel good for your own parenting and leave the rest. Parental efficacy, or parental confidence, will directly translate to positive parenting for your child. Different parenting styles and how parents can create their own parenting philosophy to tune into what you and your child need. The reasons why toddlers have tantrums and how to navigate these emotional episodes using different strategies.Setting realistic and developmentally appropriate boundaries and consequences for toddlers. Balancing rewards and external motivators to help toddlers learn about life skills. The importance of a consistent bedtime routine with toddlers and how to implement it in your home.Viewing parenting issues from the stance from whether or not there is an actual problem and determining if you need to take action. Why separation anxiety is developmentally normal in kids and how parents can work through their emotions related to it. In this episode of Parent Like a Psychologist, I dive into a thought-provoking question: Is autism truly a superpower? What does this popular phrase mean, and is it an accurate way to describe the experience of autistic individuals? I explore both the positive traits often associated with autism, such as deep focus, exceptional skills, and innovative thinking, as well as the daily challenges many autistic people face. What are the strengths of being autistic, and how do they manifest in different individuals? Are there any dangers in labelling autism as a superpower? I examine the societal expectations that contribute to these challenges and ask how we can better support and accommodate autistic people in a world built for neurotypical individuals. Other Resources Welcome His Heart: https://welcomehisheart.com/ MFP 165: Forgiveness Brings Freedom and Transformation Videos - Evangelizing Your Kids and Forgiveness in the Family https://messyfamilyproject.org/course/pizza-and-parenting/watch/ Key Takeaways Parents must be very intentional about evangelizing their children and bringing them into a relationship with Christ. Marriage is a sacrament of service to the world. Our marriages are not just for us, they are an office of service. Every mother and father is to act as “priests of the home” and take up the spiritual authority God has given them for the sake of their children. Forgiveness is key to restoring relationships that have been broken and can teach children powerful lessons on relationships. In order to transform your family you will need to start with these three things - create habits to support your goals, make Jesus the king of your home, and build community to support your family. Couple Discussion Questions How are we leading together in the home? Have we taken up that call to spiritual leadership? What is my understanding of forgiveness? How can we live this out better within our home and our relationships? How is our marriage serving others? How are we giving from the well of our sacrament? What are 2 resolutions that we can make today to start living a transformed family life?
Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
Your authority in the family does not come from perfection, it comes as a grace from your parenthood. Summary There are two kinds of families - those that are frantic and those that are fruitful. As Catholics we have an incredible grace to be fruitful families, but often our families don't look much different than the secular, frantic families around us! How can we live family life differently? There are so many different parenting philosophies out there. Which ones should Catholics follow? In this podcast, we give an overview of The Catholic Parenting Course - a guide for parents who want to have a roadmap for raising their families to be in the world, but not of the world. The two parts of this podcast are how to parent like God the Father and then the secret weapon of the Catholic family (our regular listeners can guess what that is!). Listen in! Other Resources Book: Abba's Heart Podcast: MFP096 and 097, Elements of a Family Culture and Building a Family Culture Key Takeaways To parent like God the Father, we need to start by conforming our hearts to His. Unity within your marriage needs to flow out and encompass everyone, all of your children giving them purpose and belonging. More than anything else, our children need us to delight in them. Forming the hearts of our children is our sacred task. Our goal should be to hand over the locus of control from us as parents to them. When lived intentionally, the culture within your home can be a powerful weapon against secular forces arrayed against us. Couple Discussion Questions Do we see our Heavenly Father as delighting in us? Why or why not? On a continuum from isolation to oneness, where are we now? How unified are we in our home? What does it mean to delight in our children? What does that look like for each of us, realizing that we will do this differently? What are the values that our family culture is communicating to our children?

Today, Julia and Dr. Rebekah Diamond, author of Parent Like a Pediatrician, focus on parenting newborns and children. Where do you turn when you have questions? When seeking guidance, do you rely on friends, family, or social media input to glean insights from "expert" influencers? Julia and Rebekah discuss how to filter through the well-intentioned relatives and the mistruths on social media to find your own voice and inner wisdom as a parent. This book, and this episode, focus on empowering parents to make data driven choices that suit your own individual goals for how you want to parent. We also discuss Rebekah's experience as a first time parent and pediatrician, particularly her experience with postpartum depression and anxiety has changed how Rebekah practices and teaches medicine. Discover valuable insights in this episode as you decide what is best for you and your child. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:24] Rebekah explains she wrote the book because of her experience as a new parent [05:23] Rebekah discusses all the information available, but the impracticability of achieving all of those goals [08:29] Operating in the “safe range of options” and giving advice regarding parenting [18:30] Why the book was helpful for Julia. The book is based on science and not influencers [20:40]Rebekah explains why she doesn't tell a parent what to do and her feelings about the path the medical profession has taken [25:48] Rebekah discusses her anxiety and depression and her advice for others [30:27] What would Rebekah change in the medical system if she could regarding supporting parents and empowering them [37:02] Discussing the breastfeeding concept [45:00] Rebekah explains her definition of family KEY TAKEAWAYS: There is information on social media about everything you should do as a new parent. However, it is not humanly possible to wrap your mind around all of it, let alone put all those ideas into practice. Don't let social media and influencers set the schedule and do's and don'ts for your baby or yourself. The medical institution needs to do more to support parents. One size does not fit all. We will hearing the second part of our Parenting Series. Robert Dodson will be opening up God's Word from Ephesians 6. This is the most poignant passage in scripture to parents. This passage provides us the most concise guidelines for parents for all times. Paul commands parents to apply these important truths to make these the core focus as we parent. These are tremendous truths that we as a church need to come along side all our families to support. We ALL need to know what God's standards are for parents so that every aspect of ministry is aligned with these biblical truths.

Being a new parent has a lot of unknowns and a lot of misinformation, especially in this era of social media. We all want the best for our children, and all of this information we receive and decisions we have to make can be very overwhelming and even evoke a lot of fear. It's so important to ask the hard questions, and find medical professionals that you trust and who are reputable. An example of one of the big questions parents have is, “Should I follow a vaccination plan for my newborn?” Rebekah Diamond is on the podcast today to discuss her role as a pediatrician and how she helps parents figure out their medical plan and give them steps to take when it comes to raising a healthy child. We also discuss the best way to gather information online, the anti-vaccination movement, and how the wellness industry can be predatory to moms and promote false hope. Dr. Rebekah Diamond is a hospital pediatrician in New York City and an assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University. She is the author of the book “Parent Like a Pediatrician.” Follow her on Instagram @parentlikeapediatrician. In this episode we discuss: The decision paralysis that we often experience as parents. The inspiration behind “Parent Like a Pediatrician” and how it helps parents when it comes to vaccinations. How to gather information online in a way that is helpful instead of harmful. Why some families are scared to vaccinate their children and the psychology behind it. The history of the anti-vaccination movement and how it parallels today's anti-vaxxers. The wellness industry and how it's not actually promoting preventive health or holistic medicine. A clear explanation of what HPV vaccine is specifically used for. “I'm not sure whether my three little girls are regenerate. Regardless of whether or not they are regenerate, I will raise them as ‘pre-Christians,' not pagan enemies of God. Even as a Baptist, I fully believe that when it comes to the salvation of my children, the question is merely a matter of WHEN God will choose to save them, not IF God will choose to save them.” -Pastor Joel Webbon
