Moms Demand Action: A grassroots movement for gun safety

Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement advocating for stronger gun laws. Gina Pelusi is a volunteer with the Pennsylvania Chapter. She lost her mother to gun violence ten years ago. “It was a cold Thursday morning, and she answered a knock at the door in a manner that she did not know. When she opened the door, she just shot her. In broad daylight. And they rushed my mom to the hospital. They were not able to save her.” Pelusi was shocked, angry, and heartbroken by the passing of her mother. Later, she decided to turn her pain into advocacy for stronger gun laws. “I always knew that I wanted to do something with gun safety advocacy. I just didn't really know what and how. And it actually was after the election when Donald Trump was elected, the first time that I finally went and joined Moms Demand Action and went to a meeting. I had my first child and thinking about my mom, thinking about my son, eventually going off to school one day and all of those things. I was like, I need to find a way to use my voice and share my story and try and have this tragedy mean something.” Moms Demand Action also advocates for updated background checks and responsible gun storage. The organization also meets with lawmakers and other organizations to advocate for gun safety. “it's just it's so important. And I think secure storage shouldn't be something that is controversial. That shouldn't be a hard thing for us to talk about. I think most responsible gun owners that I know and then I've ever had a conversation with agree with that. So it's like sometimes I think we get to this place where everything feels so polarizing. This is not polarizing. This is just common sense. It is the gun owners responsibility to secure their firearm, period.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Not so long ago, talking about Taiwan independence could earn you a lengthy prison term. That changed in the late 1990s as Taiwan embraced democracy. Taiwan independence advocates in the United States have always enjoyed more freedom of speech, but pro-independence organizations that pulled stunts such as chaining themselves to the doors of the U.N. building or flying pro-Taiwan banners over Little League games did come under official scrutiny. One such group, the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), was actually placed on a “terrorist” list. This week, Eryk chats with the President of the Pennsylvania Chapter of FAPA, Liam Keen, a man from the UK who holds ROC citizenship, and lives and works in both the US and Taiwan. Keen argues that actions by FAPA are producing meaningful changes in the recognition of Taiwan as a de facto sovereign state by the United States, noting that until FAPA fought and won, a Taiwan-born could person had to list their place of birth as “China” on U.S. government documents. Enjoy a fun, slightly argumentative discussion on what Taiwan should be striving for in the international arena, and the difference between symbolism and substance.

Animal cruelty and violence toward humans run hand-in-hand

Smart Talk

Animal abuse is widely recognized as both a risk factor for and a potential consequence of interpersonal violence. In children, especially, factors such as dysfunctional families, antisocial personality, physical, psychological, or intimate abuse, and frequent exposure to domestic aggression or animal abuse have been confirmed as factors that can predispose young people to perform acts of animal cruelty. That's according to the National Institutes of Health. The FBI has recognized the connection between animal cruelty and violence toward humans since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Obviously not everyone who hurts animals becomes a serial killer but there is a correlation between violence and animal cruelty. On The Spark Thursday, Teresa Olsen, Program Director, Suspected Child Abuse & Neglect (SCAN), Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics quoted an eye-opening statistic,"There's an 88% chance that if there is child physical abuse, that there is animal abuse in the home at the same time." Olsen addressed one scenario foir animal abuse,"The threat can be a big factor there. There might be sexual abuse going on, and they want that secrecy. So they'll be like, okay, well, if you say anything, that means I'm going to to hurt your belovd pet or kill your beloved pet. So it can be used in a variety of ways. But again, that kind of pecking order of who's the weakest in the family, and that person is going to get that abuse." Kristen Tullo, the Humane Society of the United States, Pennsylvania Director talked about the organization's Keystone Links,"We aim to connect the dots between animal abuse and interpersonal violence, and our coalitions really come together dedicated to the prevention of protecting both humans and animals as victims of abuse. Tullo indicated the FBI has understood the correlation between animal cruelty and violence and investigated animal abuse,"In 2016, the FBI actually began tracking animal abuse crimes into different categories. Prior to that, they were all lumped together. But now they're broken into four areas. The first is animal neglect. The second is intentional abuse and torture. The third is animal sexual assault, and the fourth is organized abuse, like rooster and dog fighting." Animal sexual abuse? Tullo commented,"It is these most the most highly linked predictor of going on to child sexual abuse. And that's why it's so important that we intervene to get these preventative strategies in place to help protect people and pets." Dana Herrmann-Hart, Director of Legal Services and the PAWS for Empowerment Program for Crisis Center North, works with victims of domestic violence,"We have women that are entering shelters report that pet abuse, use those perpetrators to manipulate and control their victims. They found that 71 to 83% of women that are entering into DV shelters report that their partners had abused or killed the family pet in the court system. I have seen it. I have heard it from people." Herrmann-Hart said vistims of domestic violence often forma  bond with their pets and her organization helps to keep them together,"We work not only on educating the people about how do we identify this to get them services, but also to help them because that pet ownership can sometimes be a barrier to leaving. The abuser will say, if you leave, I'm getting the pet, or they don't want to leave their pet in an abusive situation, and they have that intensified emotional bond with that pet during the crisis. The second part of our program is that we will help them leave. We will help them get, if it's an emergency situation, a pet friendly hotel. We have, different kind of housing problems with pets. We help them financially with their pets way so that because they will not, they won't leave their pet if they believe that that pet is going to be harmed, abused or killed."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You do not want to miss a second of this episode; it was quite interesting and revealing. Today on The Neoliberal Round Podcast we present another “Street Vibes: Pulse of the Street” where we stumbled on an amazing group called the “Ausar Auset Society” followers and teachers of Kamitic Spirituality and Culture. The interviews were quite revealing and we also learned about Bamba Ra aka Sha'Heed Muhammad who recently died and is being celebrated as an iconic black revolutionary from Philadelphia who graduated from Howard University and was involved in the Student Non-violent Action Coordinating Committee (SNCC), The Revolutionary Action Movement and the Nation of Islam; and was a frequent contributor to the Journal of Black Poetry. Importantly I raise a concern at the beginning of the episode as a preface saying that I do a compulsory course at Georgetown University as part of the Doctoral Studies Program in Liberal Studies where we are expected to do a course called DLS Foundations 1, 2, 3 and 4: where we look at the foundational history of civilization especially that of the West and to an extent the East. These studies, particularly Foundation 1, looks at our foundation by studying Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and Europe, with a few reference made to Eastern China, Russia or India. But nowhere do we look at Egyptian/African history and ideologies and how they also form part of the understanding and development of our civilizations. I explore in brief before revealing the interview as a backdrop and as a concern that I must continue to bring before the academics at Georgetown and those running the DLS program. I then delve into the interviews largely with High Priest Shekhem Ma'a Kheru Men Metu who unveils the concept, practice, culture and spirituality of Kamit and the Ausar Auset Society's role in re-popularizing, teaching and facilitating this traditional and historical culture and spirituality that has been somewhat incorporated in today but without its totality and wholeness. We also interviewed Priest Rameneikhi about the society's impact and reach and touched on Bamba Ra. We connected with others on the ground and listened to the youngsters as they were practicing their drumming which oils be heard throughout the Interviews with the High Priests or Shkhems. The Ausar Society is International with chapters all over the world. This interview was conducted at the Pennsylvania Chapter located at 6008 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia Pennsylvania 19144. The Society can be reached at 215-843-0900. Visit their website at www.ausarausetpa.com. They have RA Qi Gong classes and opportunities for learning about Kamitic Spirituality Sunday at 5:00pm where they teach Introduction to Kamitic Spirituality.
