What does peace look like for ordinary people, and how we can create metrics of peace that reflect those things that people value? In this conversation, we bring you audio from a May 2023 talk by Peter Dixon, a member of the CT Collaborative's External Advisory Board and a Middlebury alum. Everyone agrees: We are witnessing unprecedented political polarization and deep divides tearing our country's fabric. Since the current leadership in Congress cannot come to terms, the voters have little option but to send a message by electing new representatives and senators to Congress. I had an opportunity to interview a newcomer in the upcoming primary elections in California. Peter Dixon has impressive international accomplishments, entrepreneurial experience, served as a marine in combat, and a common sense approach to addressing big issues. He believes in finding creative solutions to critical priorities and has persevered through some remarkably adverse experiences. We will discuss the big issues: Guns, border, immigration, and the national debt. Peter understands that solutions must go beyond party lines and believes it's a fundamental responsibility that unites us all. Peter might be the right person at the right time. I sensed a principle-based independent thinker during our interview. Join me in this interview and see if you find his approach refreshingly honest.
Today is the deadline to enter the race for Congress to succeed retiring Representative Anna Eshoo, and it's a crowded field. There are about a dozen people running to represent parts of the Peninsula and Silicon Valley in the 16th District in Congress in a really compressed campaign; they had to decide to run within the last two weeks, and there are just twelve weeks until the primary in March when the top two will survive and move on to November. We've already interviewed three of these new candidates on this program, and today and tomorrow we will talk with two more. In today's edition of The State of California, KCBS Radio news anchor Megan Goldsby and KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Peter Dixon of Portola Valley, a 40-year-old Marine Corps veteran and Silicon Valley entrepreneur who served in the State Department under Hillary Clinton and is one of the candidates for Rep. Eshoo's seat.

Hitting The High Notes is town planning's equivalent of Desert Island Discs. In these episodes Sam Stafford chats to preeminent figures in the planning and property sectors about the six planning permissions or projects that helped to shape them as professionals. And, so that we can get to know people a little better personally, for every permission or project Sam asks his guests for a piece of music that reminds them of that period of their career. Unlike Desert Island Discs you will not hear any of that music during the episode because using commercially-licensed music without the copyright holders permission or a very expensive PRS licensing agreement could land Sam in hot water, so, when you have finished listening to this episode, you will have to make do with YouTube videos and a Spotify playlist, links to which you will find below. Sam's guest for this episode of Hitting The High Notes is Peter Dixon. Peter's studies at Cambridge started with archaeology and anthropology, but finished with land economy. Having started his career as a surveyor with JR Eve, Peter co-founded planning consultancy Hepher Dixon, which was subsequently acquired by Savills, before retraining as a barrister. Their conversation takes in the changing role of the planning consultant, the circular nature of planning policy, Noel Coward, motorway service areas and a football stadium. Peter's song selections. Natalie de Blois loved systems – understanding how things worked. For her, it wasn't just pretty buildings, she challenged the code and questioned the status quo. And like the buildings she designed, there was a certain complexity to Natalie herself. She was a woman of resilient beauty, inspiring yet distant, ahead of her time. Natalie de Blois (1921–2013), a pioneering woman architect, contributed to some of the most iconic modernist works for corporate America, all while raising four children. After leaving a significant mark on post-war NYC Park Avenue, she transferred to the Skidmore Owings and Merrill Chicago office, where she became actively involved in the architecture feminist movement and was one of the leaders in the newly formed Chicago Women in Architecture advocacy group. In this podcast Chris interviews Andy Baxter, the founder of the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation. The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation was founded out of Andy's endeavor to make a difference after having experienced one of life's greatest challenges. His wife Carley died after a three-year battle with breast cancer. Reflecting on that experience as he talked to others Andy realized his wife's experience of care and passing peacefully at home was a unique one thankfully due to the oncologist they were blessed with Dr. Peter Dixon. Hence the Dixon in the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation name. Andy shares that story and the focus and mission of the foundation including some of their more recent work in the area of Advanced Directives with their co-developed tool “Planning my Way.” Andy also pays forward to hospice and palliative care professionals what he learned during his wife's illness as well the learning from his foundation's great work in the hospice and palliative care space. Andy has great wisdom to share so tune in because there are some great pearls in this episode of “TCNtalks.” Join us. Guest: Andy BaxterHost: Chris Comeaux, President & CEO of Teleios Collaborative NetworkAndy Baxter Bio:Matthew A. (Andy) Baxter was born in New York City in 1942, and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Yale University and the Amos Tuck School of Business, he had a career in finance in New York. In 2005, his wife Carley Cunniff died from breast cancer. Baxter created the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, honoring his late wife and Dr. Peter Dixon, the physician who had guided Andy and Carley through the last stages of her life. The mission of Cunniff-Dixon is to enrich the physician-patient relationship at the end of life, to educate individual physicians and inspire them to provide the kind of care at the end of life that we all wish for ourselves and our loved ones. To that end, the foundation has sponsored continuing medical education symposiums on end-of-life care, has co-sponsored with The American College of Surgeons a curriculum on end-of-life care for surgical residents, and has sponsored the Hastings Cunniff-Dixon Physician awards. Since 2007, these awards have been given to 39 physicians from across the United States. The awards are now granted every other year, with 3 awards to early career physicians, and 1 each to a mid-career physician and a senior clinician. The recipients of these awards, together with the selection committee that determines the recipients, collectively represent the best and the brightest of palliative care leadership in this country, and perhaps the world.Since 2018, the Foundation has been working on its contribution to advance care planning. Planning My Way ….A Guide for Future Health Care Decisions is an educational resource designed to help patients and patient families with advance care planning. Here we have part two of this incredible three part series of interviews with Peter and Dr Des Ford. This episode is more informative and dynamic than the first as both have relaxed and gotten into the groove of the conversation!
Sadly Dr Desmond Ford passed away before I was able to upload this interview. You will hear me talking in the intro as if he is still with us. We release these three interviews as a tribute to the humble, gracious and caring life he lived. The interview was carried out in Des & Gil's home in late 2018. To some, Des was a controversial and even divisive character, to others he was a loving father, friend, teacher, Bible student and deep thinker who contributed enormously in aiding Adventists to better understand Righteousness by Faith. In this three part series you will hear Des, still sharp as a tack, sharing his love of the Gospel. His views on the Investigative Judgement. His respect for Adventism and Ellen G White as well as many clear and concise insights, thoughts and memories on the history and controversy that surrounded him during the '70s and beyond. In true SDA Q&A style, we invite the listener to make up their own mind.
During the American Cheese Society Conference in Pittsburgh last month, we sat down with two of our good friend in cheese, the iconic duo of Peter Dixon and Rachel Fritz Schaal, owners and cheesemakers at Vermont's Parish Hill Creamery! They make the most enticing Alpine-style cheeses using grassfed milk from the neighboring Putney School's herd of cows, and they even create all their own cultures using milk from specific herd members. They've even gotten together with a crew of awesome cheesemakers in the Northeast (our very own Sue Miller is one of them) to create Cornerstone, a recipe for a true American original cheese that makers can use to express their own unique terroir from the milk down to the microbes. Listen in to find out how they make it all happen!
