Send us a textClick to Join PMDD Power Couples Click to Book a Private PMDD SessionFollow me on InstagramFollow me on TikTokHave you ever left a therapy session feeling worse about your relationship than when you arrived? For those experiencing Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), traditional talk therapy can actually intensify relationship struggles rather than resolve them. Drawing from nearly two decades of personal experience with PMDD and extensive work with couples, I uncover why this seemingly helpful approach often backfires.Words shape reality—this principle lies at the heart of why talk therapy fails PMDD relationships. When you're already battling hormonal fluctuations that trigger negative thoughts about your partner, verbally rehearsing these problems without strategic solutions only reinforces neural pathways of dissatisfaction. Your brain doesn't distinguish between venting and programming—it simply absorbs whatever message you repeatedly deliver. The most dangerous aspect is how talk therapy can create a powerful feedback loop: PMDD focuses you on relationship negatives, therapy encourages expressing these negatives, your brain interprets this as confirmation the relationship is problematic, and well-meaning friends or therapists naturally suggest you should leave. Meanwhile, the underlying PMDD patterns driving these perceptions remain unaddressed.Breaking this cycle requires more than awareness—it demands specific tools designed for PMDD's unique challenges. One powerful technique is creating a "follicular phase letter" documenting what you appreciate about your partner when symptoms subside, then reading it daily during your luteal phase as a concrete reminder of what PMDD temporarily blinds you to. This isn't toxic positivity; it's strategic counterbalancing of PMDD's overwhelming negativity. If you're committed to your relationship but struggling with PMDD's effects, join our PMDD Power Couples community where we combine understanding with practical strategies. Learn to speak what you seek until you see what you spoke—because with the right approach, PMDD doesn't have to dictate your relationship's destiny.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe and often debilitating condition that affects millions of women worldwide. Unlike typical PMS, PMDD can trigger extreme mood swings, intense depression, anxiety, rage, and overwhelming physical symptoms, making daily life feel unbearable. Despite its profound impact, PMDD remains widely misunderstood, frequently misdiagnosed, and often dismissed by medical professionals, leaving many women feeling isolated and without answers. In this episode of The Happier Life Project, host Gabby Sanderson speaks with Sharryn Muir, a clinical psychologist who has dedicated her career to working exclusively with clients experiencing PMDD and menopause. As the founder of the Northern Psychology Centre in Australia, Sharryn has been at the forefront of educating doctors, conducting public seminars, and developing a PMDD treatment app to help women who struggle to access professional support. Her passion for this work comes from personal experience, having faced the challenges of PMDD herself. Gabby and Sharryn explore the harsh realities of PMDD, from its severe emotional and physical toll to the frustrating lack of awareness in the medical community. They discuss who is most at risk, why so many women go undiagnosed for years, and the latest medical treatment options available, including how effective they really are. Sharryn also opens up about her own journey with PMDD, what finally helped her, and why she's committed to breaking the stigma and ensuring better treatment for those suffering. If you or someone you know has been affected by PMDD, or if you experience debilitating symptoms related to your menstrual cycle for half of every month, this episode offers vital insight, expert knowledge, and the reassurance that you are not alone. According to Nikki Morrison (our resident Nurse, Death Doula and Angel), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a medical condition similar to Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) but it's a kind-of, ‘on steroids' version. PMDD causes severe (sometimes extreme) irritability, depression, pain and/or anxiety in the week or two before a period starts. For Nikki, extreme PMDD led her to question her sanity, her future, her ability to keep working, to have relationships and even, to leave the house. For me, this was an eye-opener on a range of levels. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that affects some individuals, typically in the days or weeks leading up to menstruation. It's important to recognize the impact that PMDD can have on one's emotional and mental state, and how it can influence decision-making. Making major decisions during a PMDD episode can be problematic for several reasons: Mood Instability and Emotional Fluctuations: PMDD is characterized by intense mood swings, heightened emotional sensitivity, irritability, and feelings of sadness or hopelessness. These emotional fluctuations can impair your ability to think clearly and make rational decisions. Impaired Judgment: The emotional and cognitive symptoms associated with PMDD can impair your judgment and lead to impulsive decision-making. You may not fully consider the consequences or evaluate the situation objectively. Negative Perceptions and Cognitive Distortions: PMDD can distort your perceptions of reality, making situations appear more negative or dire than they actually are. This distortion can lead to a skewed perspective and influence decision-making in a way that may not be in your best interest. Difficulty Concentrating and Focusing: The symptoms of PMDD, such as difficulty concentrating and focusing, can hinder your ability to gather and process information necessary for making informed decisions. This can result in overlooking important details or making hasty choices. Physical Discomfort and Fatigue: PMDD often comes with physical symptoms like fatigue, bloating, headaches, and body aches. These discomforts can further impact your ability to think clearly and make sound decisions. Potential for Regret: Decisions made impulsively or under the influence of PMDD symptoms may later be regretted once the symptoms subside and your judgment becomes clearer. This can lead to added stress and anxiety. Given these factors, it's advisable to avoid making major decisions during the peak of PMDD symptoms. Instead, consider waiting until your symptoms have subsided, and you are in a more stable emotional and mental state to make well-informed choices. Seeking support from healthcare professionals, therapists, coaches or support groups for PMDD can also be beneficial in managing the symptoms and making informed decisions.
