Tonight we present a very special concert that took place in Vancouver at the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Theatre and was presented by the old Vancouver New Jazz Society. It took place on a Sunday night on December 6, 1959. The star was the great Modern Jazz pianist Russ Freeman. Mr. Freeman was one of the leading and busiest pianists on the West Coast as he had played with Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Art Pepper ,Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss and many other greats. He was a hard swinging and inventive pianist who had his own style. Russ and Hampton Hawes were the two leading lights of Jazz piano on the Coast. He was very happy with his two accompanists and inspired by their talents. They were Vancouver legends Stan "Cuddles" Johnson on bass and swinging drummer Jimmy Wightman. Russ didn't do many trio albums under his name and this disc issued by Montreal's Just a Memory label adds greatly to his legacy. Sadly these fine musicians are all gone but their music lives tonight as The Jazz Show's Jazz Feature.

Together they examine the changing functions of dance in the aftermath of TikTok and how technological advancements affect the creation and attention towards faith.Coming from an extensive dance and performance background, Nina Davies (b. 1991, Canada) now situates her work within the Fine Arts; questioning choreography beyond its performative state. Using moving image, sound, text and fiction her practice aims to further critical discussion around dance by observing how it intersects with language and where it begins to take on commodified or material forms. Her work has been exhibited at SEAGER Gallery, London; Robota - Center for Advanced Studies, Bratislava; Museum Tijdschrift Cultuurcentrum, Brugge; and Strangelove Time Based Media Festival, London. She has performed at Lilian Baylis Studios, London; The Ailey Citigroup Theatre, NYC; and The Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver. Jimmie Rodgers was the foremost folksinger and hitmaker of the late 50's. His first smash was "Honeycomb" on Roulette Records in 1957. In the midst of the first stages of rock'n'roll, Jimmie was a winner with his own unique versions of standard folk songs. His version of folk emphasized a background beat that made his music unique. Starting with "Honeycomb" his string of hits lasted until 1967. It's interesting to note that "Honeycomb" was the only number one hit he ever had although his 10-year string of hits was impressive. I met Jimmie Rodgers years later when he came to perform at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre. He was most sincere and his folk songs offered a definite balance to the outpourings of hard rock. During my final week of daily radio in CISL's Wakeup Club this week in 2000, Jimmie was part of a group of special guests who made an impact on my career. Jimmie passed away January 18 at 87. I found him to be one of the warmest young singers I had ever met. I will always remember him and the influence he had on the music we loved!

We should have declared May 5 to 10, 2008 Anne Murray Week in Vancouver. Canada's first lady of song played to a full house at the 3000-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre. I was asked to emcee the opening and told the crowd that I had discovered that during this, her final coast-to-coast tour, the longest applause was in Ottawa with a three minute standing ovation at the end of the show. I urged everyone in the audience to beat Ottawa and they did by 30 seconds. Later that week at the Red Robinson Show Theatre (another sellout), the audience there beat them all with a 5 minute standing ovation. After the show we met Anne in the Green Room for this interview. We were joined by photographer Kevin Statham, TV camera person Sharron Bates, Carole, and some of Anne's people. Bruce Allen, Anne's manager, was on the speaker phone from backstage at Michael Buble's Santa Barbara concert. I told Anne that we had a special gift for her: the audio of Anne's complete show at the Cave Theatre Restaurant in 1971- recorded illegally. It is one of a kind and might have been lost over the decades but it was discovered in the late deeay Jack Cullen's collection. My friend Owen Coppin rescued it and copied it onto a disc. We had the pleasure of presenting it to Anne. She was awestruck as she had no idea anything like this existed. It was a special evening with a special lady.

It's a koi cull at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen garden in Chinatown! A murderous otter snuck into the garden over a week ago and began to chow down on the prize koi. These fish aren't cheap either - koi can easily sell for $3-thousand dollars. A 3-foot, 3-inch long koi fish sold at auction last month for $2.8-million CDN! So why don't they just trap the otter? Well, officials tried however… This isn't the first time BC has had to deal with rogue animals: In 2015, a deer was found wandering the streets of downtown Vancouver, grazing on grass amongst the skyscrapers. A couple years prior in 2011, a black bear popped out of a garbage truck on Georgia St at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. In 2014, an emu escaped from its home in Nanaimo. It was eventually captured at the Vancouver Island University. In 2017, a wallaby went on the run in Langley. It hopped around for two days before finally being caught by police with a fishing net. In 2015, a cheetah was spotted on Hwy 3, about 50 km northeast of Nelson. The cheetah was never captured and the search was eventually called off. GUEST: Niki Reitmayer CKNW Contributor Team otter

Within days recently two iconic artists passed away, and they were related to each other. Debbie Reynolds was 84 and her daughter Carrie Fisher was 60. Carrie was best known as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies. Debbie was a major Hollywood actress at 19, just like Carrie! She starred in many musicals including Singing In The Rain with Gene Kelly. I met the engaging Debbie during a November 1989 appearance at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre. She was here promoting her show The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and she had much to say about the Hollywood system of yore and her relationship with her kids.
