When thirty-four-year-old St. Paul housewife Carol Thompson was murdered in the spring of 1963, her entire neighborhood was shocked by the evil that had invaded their middle-class neighborhood. As far as anyone knew, Carol was a happily married mother of four who appeared to have it all, but the cruel brutality of her murder suggested someone had hated her enough to kill her. When investigators began to dig deeper into Carol's life and background, they found the truth was that, far from the happy façade she showed the world, Carol Thompson's life was anything but happy. In the weeks that followed her death, investigators would uncover an unexpectedly complicated conspiracy involving several well-known criminals, all leading back to the one person no one wanted to suspect.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1963. Leah Rudick is playing to sold out theaters on her comedy tours and stars in her own special, Spiraling, on Amazon Prime, thanks in large part to her massive following on TikTok and other social media platforms. So does that success help her lifelong struggle with anxiety? Well, kind of, yeah! It feels good. But achievement isn't a cure for anxiety and it's still something that Leah has to manage on an ongoing basis. Part of that is being aware of her people pleasing tendencies and learning how to tell other people what she needs from them. Back in 2013, Google's top secret lab, Google X attempted to change the world with a computer you could wear on your face. The strange looking spectacles, Google Glass, promised a seamless way to experience the real and digital world in harmony. The product generated substantial buzz and adorned the famous faces of Oprah and King Charles, but safety and privacy concerns hounded the specs as they quickly became a symbol of Silicon Valley elitism - and gifting us with the iconic term “Glass holes”. Suffice it to say, not everyone viewed “Glass” as rose-colored, and it nearly tanked a division of Google.Comedian Leah Rudick (Spiraling, High Maintenance) and TikTok star Rod Thill join Misha to ask who's the real Glasshole in this story?Follow The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts. Leah Rudick is an actor, writer, and comedian whose Wealthy Woman character videos have earned her almost one million followers on Instagram and TikTok. Thanks to her breakout social media success, Leah is now selling out comedy shows all over the country. In these videos, a clueless woman of wealth shares her point-of-view on everyday experiences like going to Cracker Barrel, flying Southwest Airlines, renting a car, or taking the bus. I (Paul Ollinger, hoster of show / writer of episode notes) find her videos hilarious. Leah was in Atlanta last week for a sold-out show at City Winer. She was kind enough to come by the house to chat money, success, and the very odd jobs that helped her pay the bills as a struggling actress. A native of Cincinnati, Leah began performing improv in New York City after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College. Her work has taken her to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. New York Sketchfest, and the Los Angeles Comedy Festival. She has appeared on HBO's hit High Maintenance and IFC's Commuters.
If you've listened to this podcast before, you already know that we avoid hype, and we stick to talking about evidence-based science. So, let me say right up front -- today, the cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown. However, a research team has identified a bacterial toxin that may prove to be the cause of MS onset as well as MS relapses. Joining me for an exclusive conversation about this discovery is Dr. Timothy Vartanian, who leads the team that made the discovery, and Dr. Richard Rudick, whose career has focused on experimental therapeutics for MS, playing a key role in the development of both Avonex and Tysabri. We're also talking about a stem cell therapy called MSC-NP that, in a Phase 1 clinical trial, delivered positive outcomes among people living with progressive MS. We'll tell you about a study that demonstrated why EDSS alone does not accurately define an individual's MS journey. We're sharing news from the International Progressive MS Alliance about a new research pipeline that will focus on improving well-being for people living with progressive MS. And we'll tell you where you can catch a replay of the International Progressive MS Alliance's latest webcast, Developing Treatments to End MS Progression. We have a lot to talk about! Known best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works celebrating the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination, and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual, a performance―a process connecting life to art. In this unconventional, illuminated biography, Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches, and writings—many previously unpublished or long unavailable–that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy.Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23. Along with her celebrated large-scale projects―including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem, and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany―Saint Phalle also produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with family, marriage to novelist Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with artist Jean Tinguely, and her productive years in Southern California.Nicole Rudick is a critic and an editor. Her writing on art, literature, and comics has been published in The New York Review of Books, the New York Times, The New Yorker, Artforum, and elsewhere. She was managing editor of The Paris Review for nearly a decade. She is the editor, most recently, of a new edition of Gary Panter's legendary comic Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise. In the interviewer's chair this episode is writer and curator Yann Perreau, who organized some exhibitions of works by Saint Phalle. Originally from Paris, Yann now lives in Los Angeles. Here's Yann Perreau discussing the life and work of Saint Phalle with writer, critic, and biographer Nicole Rudick.
