However, as history has repeatedly shown, well-intentioned financial interventions can lead to unforeseen consequences, distorting markets and triggering economic crises. As we approach the 2024 presidential election, candidates on both sides of the aisle are once again offering a range of fiscal proposals that may sound appealing but could potentially harm the very people they aim to help. Thomas Vartanian shares how we can discern between genuine solutions and potentially harmful populist promises.

Tom Vartanian, executive director of the Financial Technology & Cybersecurity Center, joined the JofA podcast recently to discuss concerns about the rapid pace of technology adoption. Although he sees the benefits technology has had, he also sees drawbacks. “It's not that we shouldn't have technology, it's not that we shouldn't applaud tecnology,” Vartanian says in the episode. “It's just that our balance is off.” Vartanian, a former federal banking regulator and the author of nine books, is a keynote speaker Sept. 9 at the AICPA & CIMA Conference on Banks & Savings Institutions, which is co-located with the AICPA & CIMA Conference on Credit Unions. What you'll learn from this episode: Why Vartanian senses “irrational” euphoria about rapid technology advances. The speaker's reminder about the original, limited purpose of the internet. Details on the assertion of “going back to fundamentals” when it comes to cybersecurity. The difference in approach between a regulated bank and a third-party service provider. Welcome to Episode 87 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Colette Vartanian (MS RD), a sports dietitian and the Athlete Care Manager over at Skratch Labs. Today, Colette and I are chatting about personalized hydration. It's been awhile since I did a dedicated hydration episode, so I figured it was time to revisit this important topic, especially as the weather warms up. We discuss key hydration concepts and strategies, including how to identify fluid and sodium needs during exercise, the role of thirst, prehydration vs hyperhydration/preloading, various methods of sweat rate and sweat composition testing, how to adjust your hydration plan for different weather conditions, and SO much more. If you're fairly new to my podcast or you just happened to miss it, Episode 52 with Andy Blow, the co-founder of Precision Hydration, is another great episode that deep dives into hydration. There's some overlap with today's show, but we also cover many other aspects of hydration, including a more in depth discussion of hydration basics, so it's a great starting point if you're looking to gain a better understanding of this topic. This week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast features Rachelle Vartanian, founder of the Living and Learning Center – a nonprofit organization that works to enhance the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic, social, work-based, and community engagement. Rachelle graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in teaching for the emotionally impaired and right out of college, she worked at a center for adjudicated youth. Rachelle was so passionate about that work, that she ended up working in that field for over 10 years. At the same time, Rachelle went back to school and obtained a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Personality and Development because she wanted to better understand why so many of her students chose to behave in self-destructive manners. It was during this same time that Rachelle began seeing signs of autism in her youngest son. When he was officially diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, she made the decision to go back to school to get a second Master's Degree in Autism Spectrum Disorders and she simultaneously began teaching high school special education. Rachelle had been looking for resources and social skills groups that would benefit her son and through her own experience and seeing the lack of support and resources – she decided to start her own local family group. Every Sunday, Rachelle facilitated a group of like-minded individuals that they called “Weamara” (the initials of the original social skills group members) and that went on for almost two years. After those two years, Rachelle recognized there was a greater need and she had a vision for what she could do to be the change she wanted to see in the world. Rachelle  took a leap of faith and quit her job after being a special education teacher for 20 years, she sold her family home, drew money from her retirement, and downsized her life – and that's what started the Living and Learning Center.   The Living and Learning Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. Through therapeutic, social, work-based, and community engagement, the Living and Learning Center seeks to support, enrich, inspire, and embolden their participants and their families so they can achieve their goals and thrive. The Living and Learning Center's vision is to become the nation's model in supporting the highest quality of life for people with disabilities and their families. In this episode, you'll hear:  Rachelle's inspiring life story; About Rachelle's journey with her son who has Asperger's Syndrome; How Rachelle got the idea to start the Living and Learning Center and how it has grown and evolved throughout the years; The story of how Rachelle took a leap of faith, quit her job, sold her house, and started the Living and Learning Center; About the incredible work that the Living and Learning Center does to support individuals with disabilities and differences and their families; And so much more.   The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, YouTube, and everywhere you listen to podcasts.  For more information on Rachelle and the Living and Learning Center, please visit: www.1GirlRevolution.com/RachelleVartanian For more information about 1 Girl Revolution, please visit: www.1GirlRevolution.com

Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 10 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Diving into our first interview this week, we have Montana Dobrovich-Fago talking with Patrick Smith, the head of visualization at MPC Visualization Studios, a major visual effects company in Los Angeles. Through the interview we learn about Patrick's past studying computer animation at Savannah College of Arts and Design, to his current role at MPC where he has worked on projects such as Avengers: Infinity War, Nope, Prehistoric Planet, and Emmy award winning Chip ‘N' Dale: Rescue Rangers. Patrick discusses what it is like to Head the visualization department including where he finds creative freedom in the position, and how he and his department navigated shifts in the industry due to COVID19. They conclude with some tips and tricks from Patrick for creatives hoping to navigate a similar career. Gianna Ormonde brings us to a close this week with her interview of Bloom Nutrition's Head of Creative Marketing, Nareh Vartanian. Ormonde leads in with Vartanian's education background by discussing her degree in Creative Advertising from Michigan University. Unauthorized network access was the most common cause of third-party cyber attacks in 2022. This includes ransomware and phishing attacks that created internal network compromises that were responsible for 40 percent of third-party cybersecurity breaches. Are we really heading toward a more secure internet? Protection from cybersecurity scams needs more security by design and an ability to give more tools to consumers for better privacy and security control. To get at the heart of some of these concerns, we interviewed AEI's very own Paul Kupiec and Thomas Vartanian. Kupiec is a colleague at the American Enterprise Institute who focuses on systemic risk and the management and regulation of banks and financial markets. Before joining AEI, Paul worked at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the International Monetary Fund, Freddie Mac, JP Morgan, and for the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve System. Vartanian is the author of The Unbreakable Internet and has served as General Counsel of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board during the saving and loans crisis and as Special Assistant to the Chief Counsel of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He is also the author of 200 Years of American Financial Panic, which is rising on the best-seller list. Tom currently leads the Financial Technology and Cybersecurity Center. In this episode, Shane walks us through just one of the many approaches to creating a more secure internet for all. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

Tom pulls no punches in his new book as he vividly and colorfully, and also convincingly, describes our cyber security vulnerabilities. As he explains, we are living on the razor's edge between prosperity and devastation; the possibility of a digital Pearl Harbor, of a geopolitical D-day, of a technological and geopolitical tsunami, and of systemic vulnerabilities, including to our entire financial system, with the risk of a financial meltdown and economic annihilation, and also, among other things, vulnerability to the world's food supply. He refers to unprecedented threats and describes the cyber security risk as one huge virtual improvised explosive device, a quintessential existential threat, the greatest threat to the future of humanity. He also refers to the “technological euphoria“ in the market, as  we all “mindlessly” click “yes” to accept terms of service, whatever they may be, and as tech start ups “move fast and break things”,  get to market first and worry about security later; and he refers to all of this as the twenty-first century version of the tulip bulb mania. He concludes that there has been for the most part short term thinking, an absence of any sense of urgency, a failure of vision, will and leadership, lack of technological expertise within the regulatory agencies, a pedestrian approach; which he describes as penetrating insights into the obvious and rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. That's a pretty damning conclusion. As a result of what Tom refers to as the norm of inaction and rudimentary analysis, we have today a “kindergarten level” cyber defenses, a practice of apologize, rinse and repeat, an attitude of defeatism in the face of a three-alarm fire. At the same time, we have no cyber police or virtual firefighters, no internet police.

In this first episode in English, I am with a publisher specializing in Japanese photography, Ivan Vartanian. In this episode, he spoke about his career and he gives us his opinion on the evolution of photobook publishing over the past 10 years and also the current opportunities in this industry. We talked about some cultural differences between Western and Japanese photography in particular the difficulty of not applying our own way of thinking and our own filter when we see photographs from another country. According to Ivan, discovering photography for another country is a process of self-discovery: "The more you're engaged with this country's culture, the more you learn about yourself ." I hope you will like this episode!1'50 – Who is Ivan Vartanian? His work experience at Aperture NY.08'55 – His first job in Tokyo for the Japanese publisher Korinsha and his beginning as an independent publisher20' – His approach to creating a book: « what the trajectory of photography is nowadays and what contribution I can give to the broader discussion ».31' - Challenges in the book industry in the 2000s and today opportunities thanks to online independent publishingNow :- Easier to interact with people through social media- During corona online shopping has exploded.- Logistics easier (Amazon, Walmart (USA).37' – The Japanese photography industry. The market for selling photographs almost does not exist or is very small. The publishing industry is much richer. There is a lot of interest and appetite for the consumption of contemporary photography in Japan through magazines.Photography is appreciated to the relation with a media, with the story that appears. Photograph response to discourse in a magazine. Different to a photograph that has been done for the sale.43' – In Western countries: conceptualizing photography as a vehicle for a story. The story of the subject, photographer, and nation. Narrative. In Japan, photography is not just a story vehicle. People are eager to apply a story to work. Not untrue but not the only filter.46' – "Discovering photography for another country is a process of self-discovery. The more you engaged the more you learned about yourself". "Japanese photography can be the place for a western audience to discover pre-established ideas about photography".49' – The understanding of the Japanese photobook is convenient for a western audience because it fits the model. The pre-existing model of an artist who is working in isolation and creating art from zero and putting it out in the world. It is not inaccurate but it is just one way. There are lots of polarization and collaboration between writers and artists. Photographers do not work in a vacuum. The Unhackable Internet: How Rebuilding Cyberspace Can Create Real Security and Prevent Financial Collapse by Thomas P. Vartanian Like most aspects of modern existence, more and more of our financial lives have migrated to the digital realm. With the benefits of ease that our Internet allows us, that transition also raises numerous – and dangerous – threats to national security, our money, and the systems we use to store and transfer it. In TheUnhackable Internet, financial services and technology expert Thomas P. Vartanian exposes the vulnerabilities of the many networks that we rely on today as well as the threats facing the integrity of our national security and financial services sector. From cyberattacks by foreign adversaries like China and Russia, the explosion of cryptocurrency, the advancement of ransomware, phishing, surveillance apps, spying software, and logic bombs, along with the increasing savvy and daring shown by Internet hackers, the next financial panic is likely to be delivered to us through use or abuse of technology. The Unhackable Internet describes how society can remake an Internet that was never conceived as a secure environment and badly tainted by the original sin of substandard coding. Vartanian argues for increasing the use of private and offline network infrastructures, controlling the ownership of Internet infrastructure, and imposing enhanced authentication, governance, and enforcement standards. This online universe would look more like our analog lives, authenticating all digital traffic to a real person and removing any virtual traveler that violated the new rules of the road. The Unhackable Internet poses a challenge to America: take the lead and create a coalition of democratic nations to implement financial cyber strategies or be left with no counterweight short of military power to respond to those who weaponize technology. This comprehensive and compelling book makes it clear that nothing less than the control of global economies is up for grabs, and that how we use technology is our choice.

This provided Vartanian with an intimate knowledge of quality materials, which helped him modify his own gear. After his time in the US Marine Corps, Vartanian became a police officer in South Carolina. As a police officer, Vartanian also modified some of his gear, including the infamous rifle sling. This piece of equipment picked up popularity among the instructors, the other officers, the folks at the range, etc. After noticing the equipment a K9 handler was using, Vartanian thought he could “hear the stitching coming out” and didn't want the patrol dog that he works with to bite him, so Vartanian asked the handler if he could make a better leash, would he use it? And Modern Icon was born. (Also, Vartanian gave a shout out to Modern Icon's “frenemy”, Ray Allen, for whom there is a mutual respect for each other!)

Whether or not you signed up to “be a writer” when you started your business, the truth is that clearly communicating your ideas through great copy is a requirement.Between newsletters, blog posts, video descriptions, captions, lead magnets, promotional emails, sales and check out pages  (those last 3 are the money makers btw)  writing is part of building an online brand. But what if you don't consider yourself a great writer? What if you struggle to come up with ideas or “get into flow” when you sit down to type? And even if you can write great content, what if persuasive selling in copy seems like an unsolvable rubik's cube?  Today's episode will help you step into the role of writer and become persuasive and compelling in your copy, through the help of my dear friend (and our copywriter here at The Speaker Co), Sara Vartanian.Sara is a launch strategist and copywriter and I've asked her to sill the tea on all things copy tips  to help you make your copy hotter than Taylor Swift tickets. You will LOVE unscripted, hilariously real conversation, packed with tangible tips, advice and strategies. We tackle questions like: how long should copy really be? Where do people spend way too much time?  What if I don't feel like writing? Plus we go into a few wildly inappropriate metaphors (per usual) that unsurprisingly drive the lessons home.Inside this episode, you'll learn:How Sara's early experience with teaching and cloth diapers (wait what?) paved the way to damn good copywritingBridging the gap between verbal and written communication styles (and how they play together)The two distractions people obsess over, but don't pay off (and what to do instead)What it takes to write unboring copy that packs a punch-y “YOU” in it4 specific actions to take when you feel “stuck” with writing Grab the show notes here ➡️ https://thespeakerco.com/sara-vartanianTHE SPEAKER SOCIETY: Learn to craft and deliver a Signature Talk that will grow your online business:  – www.thespeakerco.com/societyFREE GUIDE: Get Better Results from Your Speaking
