Boston - like many cities around the US - has begun to wrestle with the notion of paying reparations to Black people to make up for 400 years of enslavement and economic exclusion. But in Boston, this debate is layered in history. It was here that slavery was first legalized in the American colonies; it was here that founders of American independence are buried alongside the Black people they enslaved; and it was here that legislation was introduced in the 1980s that became the model of a national bill calling for reparations - a bill that is still on agenda in the U.S Congress. In “What Is Owed?”, a new 7-part podcast, GBH News political reporter Saraya Wintersmith seeks to understand what reparations might look like in one of the oldest cities in America, uncovering the lessons for a successful reparations framework through the stories of its architects, past and present.

Thursday, 01/25/2024, on American Indian Airwaves “Defiling Mother Earth: Stopping the Mountain Valley Pipeline” Today on American Indian Airwaves listeners will hear an update the $6.6 billion Mountain Valley Pipeline construction struggles and how the Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC, a joint venture of several companies operating in the extractive industries, could desecrate Native American sacred and cultural sites with the planned construction of the Southgate portion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline into what is called the state of North Carolina. Meanwhile, listeners will be informed about the how the Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC. is presenting suing over 40 land defenders, and two organizations (Appalachians Against Pipelines and Rising Tide North America) with Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (S.L.A.P.P.) lawsuits. SLAPP lawsuits are often instigated by wealthy corporations and sometimes the state. It is powerful legal tactic used to silence and censor Native Americans, U.S. citizens, grassroots peoples, activists, and even organizations. SLAPP lawsuits result in violating peoples U.S. Constitutionally protected Free Speech rights and their right to assemble while the lawsuits move through the court system. Moreover, SLAPP lawsuits are financially expensive for Native Americans, U.S. citizens, activist, land defenders, water protectors, and grassroots and non-profit organizations, that result is systemic financial harms. The Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC is a joint venture of Equitrans Midstream, NextEra Energy Resources, Consolidated Edison, and RGC Resources, and other companies. The pipeline is six years behind schedule, about half a billion dollars over budget, and, despite promises that it would be done by the end of last year, delayed once again. The remaining construction is over rugged terrain, with hundreds of water crossings left to bridge. The pipeline runs through the states of West Virgina, south Virgina, and possibly into North Carolina, including through and adjacent to mostly Native American communities, POC neighborhoods, and poorer white communities. Beside the land and water damages, if the pipeline is fully constructed, the long-term, irreversible danger is releasing 90 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from producing, transporting, and burning all that methane over the 40 to 50 years the pipeline's life expectancy. Tune in to hear more about the struggle over the Mountain Valley Pipeline, the U.S Congress political back deals and the U.S. Supreme Court's complicity in sanctioning the original pipeline route's contrition, and what listeners can do to defend the sacred. FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE 30 DEC 2022!Great questions, thank you so much!I'm going to see Canadian progressive synth-rock band Saga in February. Saw Tom Cochrane in May and Blue Rodeo August/2021. HUGE fan of Canadian music, especially from the 80s. What are some of your favourites?Hi Stef! Do you think cognitive dissonance is real? Can a person truly not be conscious of their own contradictory beliefs, or is it a shit test by bad actors to see who will be permissive of their hypocrisy?I have been giving tons of thought to the future of AI after watching the movie Bladerunner 2049. If AI advances far enough, less say "self aware" with its own ambitions and emotions, would morality push us to treat it similar to animals at some point? Have you written any books that cover this topic? Thank you in advance! How do I handle a oscillating 2 year old that makes a deal than backs out as soon as you try to change a diaper?Would you be OK with the creation of a giant hippy commune if it doesn't violate the NAP?Is Andrew Tate a force for good? What do you think were some important moments of 2022, Ukraine war? U.S Congress selling out and refusing to close the border. EtcStef when is a good age to talk to a child about sexual predators/ kidnappers and how would you approach the subject with them? Why is it a stereotype for libertarians to be autistic ?I saw Ed Dutton (jolly heretic) say that autistic people are more honest than non-autistic people.Stef if you changed your name to Stefania Molyneuxa, put on a blond wig you would have been a New York best seller like Jennette McCurdy. Thanks for answering my stupid AI question. Now I'm going to ask you the question I should have to start with:My father does not see spanking as child abuse if done as a last resort. I have had conversations with him about peaceful parenting and he believes some children will only respond to punishment.I told him if that is the case, he will never spend time with my future kids alone if he chooses to spank and doesn't change his position. Was I right to do this?I read Anthem in High School, it was the first High School level book I read cover to cover.I've listened to most of The Fountainhead on YouTube, thoroughly enjoying it.The next Rand book on the list is Atlas Shrugged. How would you rank those three books and what other books of hers would you suggest?Stefan, what is your fatal flaw? How do you develop the discipline to avoid the behaviors that are bad for you and do the things that are so unenjoyable but necessary for your progress as a person? If you have a serious health condition why do you think people try and move on from the subject rather than express sympathy?

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:   1979 was a crucial year for Taiwan. In January of that year the United States changed its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing and in December of that same year the Kaohsiung Incident happened. Speaking with my guest, Dr. Mark Chen, for this episode made me realize that there are many people to thank for the important work that they did back then to safeguard Taiwan and the people of Taiwan.   Dr. Mark Chen (陳唐山 ) has spent much of his life dedicated to doing advocacy work for Taiwan both in the U.S. and in Taiwan. Listeners of this podcast may recall his name being mentioned in episode 199 when I spoke with Gerrit van der Wees about the Taiwan Relations Act.   When the United States formally recognized the communist People's Republic of China and severed its diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979, Mark Chen and others reached out to U.S. congressmen and senators to express the concerns of the people of Taiwan. As a result, he and several others were invited to testify in front of the U.S Congress as the Taiwan Relations Act was being drafted. The act passed in April of 1979. Later that same year when the Kaohsiung Incident happened on December 10th Dr. Chen and overseas Taiwanese were galvanized to call for further investigation into the matter and to put international pressure on the Kuomintang government to release those charged and arrested in connection with the Kaohsiung Incident.   Dr. Chen also shared how the advocacy work being done for Taiwan at the time led to the formation of FAPA (the Formosan Association for Public Affairs) in 1982. This year marks the 40th anniversary of FAPA.   In part one of my interview with him we focus on the work he's done for Taiwan in the U.S.- which started when he was a student at the University of Oklahoma.   Dr. Chen has been the president of the Taiwanese Association of America, World Federation of Taiwanese Associations, and the Formosan Association of Public Affairs.   In part two of my interview with Mark Chen, we'll talk about his work in Taiwan as an elected official and public servant, and his current work as the chairman of the Prospect Foundation.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: How the education Dr. Chen received when Taiwan was ruled by the Japanese influenced him How the arrival of the Kuomintang in Taiwan in 1945 at the end of World War II was without the consent of the Taiwanese people and changed things overnight for the people of Taiwan How the Chiang Kai-shek Kuomintang government was focused on retaking China at the time and a lot of this rhetoric ended up being taught in schools The impact of the 228 massacre on the people of Taiwan How subject matter taught in schools changed under the Kuomintang How Mark and many of his peers were able to study in the U.S.  with the financial assistance of scholarships How an exit visa was needed to be able to leave Taiwan which was still under martial law at the time His involvement with Taiwanese student groups as a university student was forbidden by the Kuomintang government in Taiwan at the time Why his Taiwan passport was confiscated after sending it to the Taiwan embassy in Houston to be renewed; making him stateless When an ad about the 228 massacre that was to run to the University Oklahoma newspaper was denied publication, Dr. Chen who was a young student at the university, appealed directly to the university's president who agreed to publish the ad When the U.S. cut its official relationship with Taiwan in 1979, Taiwan was known as “Free China” under the rule of the Chiang Kai-shek government, as opposed to “Red China” which refers to the People's Republic of China How Dr. Chen and others in the Taiwanese American community worked to inform members of the U.S. Congress about the importance of the U.S. maintaining a relationship with Taiwan, and understanding the perspectives of the Taiwanese people How Dr. Chen was blacklisted for being involved with organizing Taiwanese student organizations not allowed to return to Taiwan for father's funeral How Dr. Chen, Peng Ming-min and others were invited to testify to the U.S. Congress about on behalf of the people of Taiwan that there should be freedom and democracy in Taiwan, this formed the basis for the Taiwan Relations Act On January 1, 1979 U.S. President Jimmy Carter switched the U.S.'s diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to the People's Republic of China How Dr. Chen asked the American Institute in Taiwan office in Washington D.C. to investigate the Kaohsiung Incident which happened on December 10, 1979 Dr. Chen was the chairperson of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations when he personally went to visit the chairman of Amnesty International in London to appeal of their help in calling for the release of those arrested due to the Kaohsiung Incident How Dr. Chen and others informed U.S. Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy about the Kaohsiung Incident and what was happening in Taiwan at the time What led to FAPA (Formosan Association for Public Affairs) being established in 1982 When U.S. President Jimmy Carter officially recognized the People's Republic of China, the annual 20,000 immigration quota that the U.S. had allotted for Taiwan would switch over to China, Dr. Chen, Chai Trong-rong and others started lobbying for the immigration quota They reached out to Senator Ted Kennedy, Senator Claiborne Pell, Congressman Jim Leach and Congressman Stephen Solarz, about the immigration quota and a bill was passed that allowed the U.S. to allot Taiwan an annual immigration quota of 20,000 The success of recovering the U.S. immigration quota for Taiwan led to the idea to form FAPA (Formosan Association for Public Affairs) FAPA was modeled after AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) The first president of FAPA was Chai Trong-rong and Dr. Mark Chen was the second   Related Links: To view all related links for this article, click link below: https://talkingtaiwan.com/dr-mark-chen-advocate-for-taiwan-in-both-the-u-s-and-taiwan-ep-212/

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invoked Pearl Harbor and 9/11 during a rare and urgent appeal to U.S Congress for more weapons to stem the Russian assault. He's also projecting optimism that Moscow's demands for haunting the nearly three-week war were becoming "more realistic." The remarks came on a day that local officials say that a Russian airstrike destroyed a theater building where hundreds of people were sheltering in the encircled seaport I Mariupol. There was no immediate word on deaths or injuries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that a "business-like spirit" has emerged in the diplomatic talks, which he described as focused on a "nuteral status" for Ukraine's military.

This story is dedicated to the work I did along the way and what I hope for you is an inspiring story of healing. I will be sharing tips and tools that worked for me as a message of hope. I did it and so can you!   In this episode, I share:  How I handled getting diagnosed with cancer Finding a doctor that was right for me Going through chemo, radiation, and losing my hair Western and plant medicine The breast meridian grid, lymphatic drainage massages, acupuncture My healing process Finding support and asking for help Work with Jennifer 25% Off a Private Coaching Session  Sign-up for the Newsletter  Become a Member & Support the Illuminated Podcast Athletic Greens ~ Exclusive Discount  Resources From This Episode: Mederi Center - Holistic Health & Healing, Patient Care, Research, Education Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation ︱Medical Marajuana Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas is an incredible local organization that is here to help. Whether you need rides, housework done, financial help, or emotional support ~ they're incredible and understand. There's a lot of grants and financial assistance out there if you need it! They can help you navigate through ALL and ANY of this! https://bcrc.org https://www.instagram.com/bcrcoftx/ Mederi Center HERBAL TEA MIXTURE: 3 parts I. equal parts ~ hibiscus, fennel, uva ursai, lemongrass After you buy the herbs just go on and blend them together in a jar, mix them up, and then just scoop out what you need as you fill the loose tea into the large metal tea infuser. I buy all of my herbs at The Herb Bar on Mary St off of S Congress, they also sell Chaga Mushrooms as a tea and that's also great!  Brew it long & brew it strong! In a crockpot on low for 7hrs + I find is the best way II. Slippery Elm/Marshmallow Root Either one. Marshmallow Root is a Slippery Elm. This is a cold brew.  1TBSP : Quart (mason jar) filled with distilled water and kept for 24 hrs in the fridge. Drain & store. Slippery Elm is kind of mucusy for lack of a better word and it looks weird but it's fine, strain it after 24 hrs. III. To Drink Mix them 50/50 or 75 mix/25 elm - they are both super beneficial and I wouldn't worry too much about the balance. Serve warm. Drink as much as you want. It's such a great kidney flush and if you're experiencing any UTI like symptoms it will clear it right up. It's kind of dry but you can add Stevia or Honey to take care of that. BONE BROTH   This is such an awesome way to get nutrients when you don't feel like eating and it will really help to get your vitamins and minerals. I loosely follow Dave Aspreys recipe. You can get Grass Fed Beef Marrow Bones from most any Farmers Market. Richardson Farms takes orders and you can collect from Barton. 10lbs will make 3 - 4 batches. It goes a long way. If available I will also add chicken feet, egg shells from past eggs I've eaten. I keep them in the freezer, knuckles ~ really whatever goodness I can find at the market. And vegetables only for the last 12 hrs. IT seems like a lot but it's pretty easy. After I warm it to serve I always add sea salt, pepper, cayenne, ginger, turmeric. Yum! It will definitely need salt, other than that flavor it however you like. If you have any problems finding the recipe then let me know. If you take HERCEPTIN as one of your drugs ~ You must consume OLIVE OIL and OLIVES. IT helps the Herceptin to work better. Water   Water is so vital and with everything you hear nowadays I have taken an extra precaution and installed filtered water that is all throughout the house - including laundry, shower, and bidet! There's also a PH tap at the sink to get high alkaline water.  SUPPLEMENTS/NUTRITION   When I first got diagnosed I went to see an Integrative Wellness Coach, Carl Schmidt at Lake Hills Pharmacy, he was very knowledgeable about Cancer in general and got me onto various supplements; Paw Paw & Methyl Folate were crucial. There's great, short YouTube videos about Paw Paw and how it works to fight cancer cells. It was so hard for me to eat veggies and drink my green drink and all the “healthy” stuff while on chemo and I got to the point where I was too tired to grocery shop, cook, clean, and eat. Ask for help! People want to help you and you have to stay nourished. If you take HERCEPTIN as one of your drugs ~ You must consume OLIVE OIL and OLIVES. It helps the Herceptin to work better. I worked alongside the Mederi Foundation in Oregon - there's a lot of info online. They had access to all of my info; blood work, tests, etc. and they sent tonics and all sorts and that's how I got the recipe for the tea. MIND/BODY ~ SPIRITUAL HEALTH   This is a really important time to look after your spiritual and mental health. This is tough and it sucks. You've got to come to terms with the fact that you are down - and that's not easy. While you're laying down listen to something inspirational or calming, meditating, etc., whatever suits you. It's better than drowning in crappy tv and having that vibration bring you down. I recommend Deepak Chopra Soul of Healing Affirmations, The Secret of Healing both on iTunes and it's so awesome to listen to. The Soul of Healing is also a book and a DVD; it's really incredible. Abraham Hicks is also great to listen to. I think it's important to reaffirm that you can do this! Don't ever refer to the cancer as “my”. Do not own it. It's here and you have to recognize that but that's not what you are and that's not how you should own it. You'll get so much literature and books, etc. Read when you can but don't overwhelm yourself and don't look at the word cancer in various forms all over the house. Know what I mean? https://open.spotify.com/album/3rpDTnXBdaciYySxV1ElyH?si=1IvS7Z0WS3CCFQxjnq2BJg&dl_branch=1  Soul of healing Affirmations https://open.spotify.com/album/71M7hkvO8USA2Qlagia2be?si=O1opisxaTs6VurW8wprEcg&dl_branch=1  Soul of Healing Meditations  Chopra, Deepak. The Soul of Healing Affirmations Whatever you believe in - believe in it. Pray hard and pray strong. ACUPUNTURIST & HEALER   I have an incredible acupuncturist and healer, her name is Rama Chittajallu and her number is 512.293.5388 I saw her for a couple of years before my diagnosis. She is a Reiki Master, Acupuncturist, and a Dr. Master of Chinese Medicine - this is a great addition and balance to the Western Medicine.  PETS   I had my dog registered as an Emotional Service Animal (ESA) She loves everyone and is just a really special beast and my bestie. She eases my anxiety SO much and truly is my xanax. It's super easy to certify your pet online audit's like $80. Trust me - if you've got a cool dog that goes everywhere with you, take it to the next level, you'll love it!   The Grove Wine Bar https://www.instagram.com/grovewinebar/ https://www.grovewinebar.com Connect with Jennifer Website Patreon YouTube Facebook Instagram

Some of today's biggest winners were Amazon, which was up 3.3%, Costco was up 2.915%, while Walmart closed up 2.66%. Video game company Electronic Arts saw shares go up 2.35%. While many were up today, Walgreens Boots Alliance saw shares dive 7.8% as a result of their missed earnings. Much of the negative reaction was attributed to their Boots UK stores low sales numbers from low foot traffic due to stay-at-home orders. They plan to cut 4,000 jobs in the Boots UK business as a result. Others that saw losses included Kohl's retail and United Airlines, which both were down 7.25%. Oil and gas stocks also took a hit with Hess Corp down 9.4%, Phillips 66 down 7.8%, and Marathon Oil down over 7% today. https://callputstrike.com/2020/07/09/florida-coronavirus-cases-spook-markets-while-tech-rides-high-daily-financial-news-summary-for-thursday-july-9-2020/ Hong Kong National Security Law Threat To U.S Tech Giants And Financial Institutions China imposing Hong Kong Security Bill 2020 and the U.S retaliating with a new sanction bill is a tailwind that threatens U.S companies' operations in the former British colony. The security law has already had its first casualty, ByteDance, has announced it is ending support for video service TikTok in Hong Kong. Hong Kong National Security Law With the passing of the Hong Kong national security law, Beijing now has sweeping powers to prosecute any entity it perceives as a threat to national security. On its part, Washington has responded the best way it knows, fearing its interests in the semi-autonomous region are at considerable risk. The U.S Congress has already passed a bill that establishes penalties to foreign persons or entities that undermine Hong Kong one country, two systems, under the new security law. The bill gives the government of the day the power to block assets and deny U.S entry to entities that implement the security law. https://callputstrike.com/2020/07/09/hong-kong-national-security-law-threat-to-u-s-tech-giants-and-financial-institutions/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/callputstrike/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/callputstrike/support
