Imagine making a film set in a town where dancing is illegal. Imagine that bit being the true story element of said film. Imagine that not one of the team had ever seen 1984's Footloose in full before this very week. SCENES, such very eighties scenes, in this week's Rated or Dated, chosen by Offord, montaged by Bacon. Before that, Mick's been on the Zoom with comedian Olga Koch to chat about her latest show, Prawn Cocktail, the masters she did in lockdown, which looks at parasocial relationships and how the two might come together. Hannah's been to see Othello at The Globe's Sam Wanamaker theatre, a new production directed by Ola Ince, and she loved it. Hannah chats to Ola about placing Othello in a police force, putting words in Shakespeare's character's mouths, and why she's put a second black man onstage in a play which quite on purpose only ever has one. In Jenny Off the Blocks, Jen's talking about allyship in football (we can all wave our scarves in celebration at CANDI Utd's recent actions), while over in the Bush Telegraph, we're getting up to date on who's in charge of France and what a nutritious breakfast looks like, as well as looking at some bad maths for women.
Tune in to Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse" for an engaging broadcast of "Hay Fever," a timeless radio play by the acclaimed playwright Noel Coward. Aired in 1947 on CBS, this radio adaptation brings Coward's comedic genius to life. Set in the English countryside, "Hay Fever" is a witty narrative centered around the peculiar Bliss family. The story unfolds over a weekend, filled with romantic confusions and humorous misunderstandings. Leading the cast is Evelyn Carden as Judith Bliss, the flamboyant retired actress, alongside Everett Sloane who portrays David Bliss, her novelist husband. Their children, Sorel and Simon Bliss, are charmingly enacted by Anne Burr and William Woodson. The play also features Jane Cowl as Myra Arundel, Sam Wanamaker as Sandy Tyrell, Vanessa Brown as Jackie Coryton, Paul Stewart as Richard Greatham, and Agnes Moorehead in the role of Clara, the housekeeper. This episode of "Sunday Night Playhouse" promises a delightful journey into Coward's comedic world, showcasing the intricate dynamics of the Bliss family and their weekend guests. Join us on Vintage Classic Radio this Sunday for a memorable rendition of Noel Coward's "Hay Fever," a classic piece of 20th-century theatre, adapted exquisitely for radio.
Episode 074: Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Kirsten Shepherd-Barr Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Henrik Ibsen's dark family drama Ghosts provoked outrage when it was published in 1881, its treatment of sexual disease, incest and euthanasia too much for the critics. More than 140 years later its portrait of repressed truths and social hypocrisy remains as powerful as ever. As we record this episode a new adaptation of Ghosts by Joe Hill-Gibbons is playing in the Sam Wanamaker theatre at Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London. Kirsten Shepherd-Barr, Professor English and Theatre Studies at St Catherine's College, Oxford, joins us to review Ibsen's unflinching drama.
Take a trip to London, England. Host (and native Brit) Alan Campbell took a trip "across the pond" to visit the home of Benjamin Franklin, Jimi Hendrix's flat, and the reconstructed Globe Theatre where actor and director Sam Wanamaker labored for years. We hear stories from historians and tour guides about why these gentleman fell in love with London and what they accomplished there. This episode of Watching America originally aired September 2022, soon after the passing of Queen Elizabeth.
Welcome back to another “super” exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are once again joined by Jose from the Watch/Skip+ podcast to discuss 1987's superhero film - Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. What do you get when you combine the Man of Steel and The Cannon Group? You get a commercial and critical failure, and the end of Christopher Reeves as Superman. Made with a comparatively tiny budget, The Quest for Peace is best known for terrible special effects, a total lack of scientific knowledge, and slo-mo WWE wrestling in space. Does The Quest for Peace have enough charm to make it watchable? Why is Jon Cryer in this movie doing his impression of a “Valley Girl?” Did Brad just do a Rodney Dangerfield impression? We will explore his career while also touching on Sean Connery's badassery, David Cassidy as a TV cop, the genius of Columbo, and the relationship between Picasso and Dr. Richard Kimble's innocence. Nicholas Hammond shares life lessons learned from being the first live-action Peter Parker/Spider-Man and working with Julie Andrews on The Sound of Music. Nicholas Hammond was the first actor to play a live-action Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the 1970s. We discuss how Nicholas landed the role and what it meant to him to be the star of his own show. We dive into the decisions made on the show that upset Stan Lee and we discuss the current movies and with their approach to the Multi-verse how a 1970s Spider-Man could make a comeback. Before Nicholas became the first prime-time web-slinger he had a starring role as one of the 30 children in the original Lord of the Flies (1963) movie. We discuss the making of that movie and how the director navigated such a disturbing tale with unknown 10-year-olds. We also discuss Nicholas's role as Friedrich Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Working directly with Julie Andrews had a profound impact on Nicholas's life and he share the lessons learned early on working with such an amazing person as Julie Andrews. We also discuss the time Nicholas was the big man on campus and what it was like creating a one-time iconic character on The Brady Bunch. This episode is... well... Amazing and ends with Nicholas's story on landing the role of Sam Wanamaker in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood.

Sam Wanamaker was an American actor and director, and the visionary behind Shakespeare’s Globe. He founded the Globe project in 1970, and worked tirelessly for decades against setbacks, funding struggles and court cases to build the Globe theatre we sit in today. In the run up to the centenary of Sam’s birth, we chat to our Director of Education Patrick Spottiswoode – who has been part of the Globe team since 1984 – about Sam’s remarkable story.
The Hay Festival began in 1988 with 250 people in a field in mid Wales. Thirty years later, the crowd has swelled to more than quarter of a million - 265,000 people are expected to turn up this year over ten days - and it's still in a field in mid-Wales. But the Hay Festival has also grown into an international brand, with spin-offs across the world in Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Segovia. The Festival founder, Peter Florence, has been running it all that time; he started it with his parents - his father was a theatre manager for Sam Wanamaker. Legend has it - and Peter confirms this - that it was partly funded by winnings from a poker game. In Private Passions, he looks back over the lessons of the last thirty years, and reveals how he has grappled with censorship when staging festivals in Hungary and Mexico. Peter Florence's music list reflects a passion for Bach and Mahler, and for the oud player Anouar Brahem. He chooses Handel's Sarabande, made famous by the film Barry Lyndon, and Sarah Vaughan singing "The Man I Love", which he describes as the sexiest song in the world. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

Story: Ostberlin 1978. It is 15 years since a replica of Shakespeare's Globe theatre was first opened in London. Built on the banks of the Thames it stands almost exactly where the original 17th Century building had been. It came into being because of the passion of an American actor, Sam Wanamaker. Photo: The Globe Theatre. BBC
HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur is at the Globe Theatre in London - a magical recreation of the theatre where William Shakespeare honed his theatrical genius in the late sixteenth century. Over the next six weeks every one of Shakespeare's 37 plays is going to be performed, in 37 different languages by theatre companies from all over the world. He speaks to actor Zoë Wanamaker, honorary president of the Globe which was built thanks to the tireless efforts of her father, the American actor and director, Sam Wanamaker, about Shakespeare, the stage and her family's artistic obsession.
