Zen Benefiel, Author and Transformational Life Coach (BeTheDream.com) takes us on another apocalyptic (uncovering knowledge) journey in making sense common. Zen is a polymath, deep thinker and researcher and it comes out in his comfortable and open yet focused style. Make sure you subscribe, please! You'll be glad you did. Closed Captions (CC) in multiple languages, though Google Translate may not be the best. In a past life Faye Kitariev, aka SoFeya, was an Olympic skating coach with her athlete, Sasha Cohen, achieving a Silver Medal in women's figure skating, so she knows what discipline and determination can do. She admits that even though she came from a very disciplined country, she felt she rejected it in her youth. As an adult in her degree work in spiritual psychology, she became aware of the trauma from the highly disciplined and often physically abusive environment. She was particularly surprised by how her studies revealed many trauma triggers which led to greater self-awareness and the ability to embrace and transcend them. Growing up in Russia's influence was particularly influential, though not how you think it would be as she defied her coaches and mentors. She mentions a well-known coach, Béla Károlyi, who inspired her as a coach years later; and even later finding a letter she'd written to him telling him about her aspirations in life. Her findings might just inspire you to write about your aspirations, too. After all, goals are just dreams with deadlines. Midway through we begin to enter the twilight zone when our discussion turns to a bit of synchronicity beginning with a quick interlude on a Russian couple, Nicolai and Svetlana Levashov, scientist and psychic, after Zen inquires if SoFeya knows of him. The flow begins to dive deep into how inner work and spiritual practices. SoFeya shares her journey, including becoming a Kundalini yoga teacher, and how her connection to a greater consciousness led her into her current work. SoFeya speaks to her growth in awareness and learning that even though we think we know stuff, our definitions are limited by the words we use. Experiences hold wisdom beyond words, yet it's often a challenge to articulate the wisdom garnered in understandable terms and words. Even when words do come, as we gain more knowledge, those words often change and so we need to not be so attached to them. There is a shared passion for elevating our conditions and the way we see the world as we emerge into something new. You'll enjoy the full conversation. 观众为何向花样滑冰运动员扔毛绒玩具?|Why Do People Throw Stuffed Animals at Figure Skaters?Moments after a figure skater finishes their program, adoring fans fling gifts onto the ice. There have definitely been some weird ones over the years. As NBC Sports reports, Sasha Cohen was once given multiple cashmere sweaters; Canada's Elvis Stojko and Patrick Chan have walked away with lingerie; and Debi Thomas even got a box of Domino's pizza after her performance at the 1987 world championships. (Another skater, Doug Mattis, had tossed it onto the rink because Thomas had jokingly wondered why people “don't throw something good, like pizza?”) Carbs and clothing aside, the post-program offerings are mostly stuffed animals. Though it's not clear exactly how or when this custom began, there are a couple of factors that help explain why it's so popular. First and foremost, flowers, once the go-to item to toss at skaters, are messy. The “sweepers”—the kids who skate around collecting all the gifts between each program—have a much easier time grabbing plush toys than scrabbling at every petal and leaf that fell off its flower. There's no global ban on chucking bouquets, but organizations have made attempts to discourage the practice in the past. In 1989, US Figure Skating banned arenas hosting national championships from selling flowers. And ahead of the 2002 national championships, the association outright prohibited fans from bringing their own flowers (and other items) to the arena at all. Flowers have always been a problem. Even when they're wrapped, the staples pop out and become a hazard,” Larry Kriwanek, chair of the event's organizing committee, told the Los Angeles Times. “Flowers were going to be eliminated. It was just a question of when.” Instead, fans could purchase already-authorized stuffed animals inside the arena and shower their favorite skaters with those.这场赛事的组委会主席拉里·克里瓦尼克对《洛杉矶时报》记者说:“往冰场上扔鲜花一直是个问题。即使是包装好的花束,花朵和叶子也会掉出来,从而造成隐患。应该让鲜花从冰场上消失,这只是个时间问题。”作为替代,粉丝们可以在场馆内购买官方授权的毛绒动物玩具,然后抛给他们喜欢的花滑选手。Stuffed animals also give supporters an opportunity to choose presents that seem more personal. "We sometimes will get stuffed animals made in custom costumes to match what we're wearing,” American ice dancer Meryl Davis, who won gold with partner Charlie White in 2014, told NBC Sports. It turns out that skaters often do try to take especially meaningful or thoughtful gifts home with them. Note: Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022has cancelled the toy throwing part of the figure skating events due to the guidelines on pandemic preventionand control. cashmere英 [ˈkæʃmɪə(r)];美[ˈkæʒmɪr] n. Paul McDonald and Britt Mooney enter week 2 of the “Who am I?” series by diving into the documentary The Weight of Gold (2020) with Michael Phelps, Apolo Ohno, Shaun White, Lolo Jones, Gracie Gold, Katie Uhlaender, Bode Miller, David Boudia, Jeremy Bloom, Sasha Cohen, and, posthumously, Steven Holcomb and Jeret "Speedy" Peterson. We dig into the contrast between accomplishment and identity, and the difference between comparison and competition. We compare the weight of gold, the pressure of striving and chasing and fighting for our victories, with the CS Lewis essay the Weight of Glory. In it, we find that the greatest prize we can win is knowing who we are. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What makes your sacrifices worth while? Medals/trophies? Something else? What does success mean to you? When do you feel like you are your accomplishments? Productivity? Schedule? Where does your worth come from (honestly)? Job? Roles? Work? If your accomplishments make you who you are, what do you do when you fall short? What do you believe will make you happy? How does our culture react to words as violence? Where do you feel “not good enough?” Where is your comparison trap? Job? Money? Vacations? Car? Free time? Kids? Wife? Friendships? Where do you feel like you're failing? What desires have gone wrong? Who are you, outside of your roles and accomplishments? Do you feel more like a worthless failure, or a saint, a holy one? What does God call you? What would be your perfect lap? What race are you called to run? What does it mean to fight from victory? What does victory look like? Are you chasing applause in heaven or here on earth? What is the difference? How easy is it for you to ask for help? Where do you feel weak? Do you feel pitied by God or delighted in by God? What is the difference? Just a little over a year ago, the Nickelodean network premiered a kids show called Danger Force, which is a spinoff of the older Henry Danger kids series. Danger Force follows the adventures of some young super-heroes in training. The show casted thirteen year old transgender actor Sasha A. Cohen into the June nineteenth episode, making history as it was the first time in network history an openly transgender actor was cast in a live-action show. Actor Michael Cohen, who is no relation, is a star in the series and is transgendered as well. Michael Cohen says that Sasha Cohen's appearance on Danger Force will help change kid's lives. Nickelodeon Vice President for programming and content strategy, Paul DeBenedictus, says that the network's mission is to be a home for all kids, and to authentically represent them in their full diversity. Parents, this offers an opportunity to talk about God's grand and glorious design for gender, making us male or female. Use these teachable moments to tell your kids the truth.

We might think of insects as pests, annoying little creatures that enter our homes uninvited, that buzz incessantly and bite us without cause. But insects make the world go round. In this episode, Sasha Cohen, former US Olympic figure skater, discusses the most challenging things about life as an Olympian—the pressures, the expectations, years of sacrifice, but worst of all a loss of identity post-career resulting in many former Olympians suffering from depression. We begin by talking about everything that led up to her unforgettable moment from the 2006 Olympics, and how she handled herself so beautifully in the face of disaster. Most importantly, we talk about post-skating life when she shares many insights such as the downside of constantly striving for a moment, the hollowness of achievement, and the importance of redefining our definition of success. We discuss: Sasha’s mindset going into the 2006 Olympics as the favorite [6:30]; Figure skating basics, scoring, short program vs. long program, etc. [13:40]; Sasha’s unforgettable performance at the 2006 Olympics [18:10]; Win, lose, or draw, why many Olympians suffer from a loss of identity [32:30]; Dealing with the disappointment of “losing the gold” [40:30]; The tiny window of opportunity for Olympians, and the overwhelming pressure to meet expectations [49:30]; Sasha’s unique childhood, finding figure skating, and channeling her hyperactive personality into becoming an amazing skater [1:01:30]; The consequences of extreme training at a young age, and trying to control the uncontrollable [1:10:00]; What is driving extreme athletes and Olympians to be the best? [1:18:30]; Why many former Olympians and athletes struggle with depression [1:25:00]; Refining success—How Sasha overcame her own loss of identity [1:32:30]; What advice would Sasha give her 15-year-old self? [1:40:45]; Lessons we can learn from watching the rapid downfall of many former Olympians [1:45:00]; Advice for people who are tying their identity to being “successful” or striving to be “the best” [1:56:00]; Life lessons Sasha wants to apply to being a mother to her baby boy she is expecting [2:05:00]; and More. Sasha Cohen is a World Champion ice skater. She won silver in the 2006 Winter Olympics when she was just 22 years old. Which means she had to start early. We’re taking to the ice as we explore the physics of figure skating with host Chuck Nice, Olympic medalist Sasha Cohen, neuroscientist Dr. Heather Berlin, and resident astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Record live as a part of “StarTalk at BAM: Science is Everywhere.” (Adult Language). Note from StarTalk Editors… For further reading on the complex topic of ice melting under pressure, Dr. Tyson, recommends the following two scholarly articles on the subject, one on the general topic of slippery ice (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ykmfo4yez04wllo/Why%20is%20ice%20slippery.pdf?dl=0), and the other on the Capt. Robert Falcon Scott expedition to the South Pole (https://www.dropbox.com/s/2swrz12vs158v30/PNAS%20on%20RF%20Scott.pdf?dl=0), whose diary entry noted, "The (ice) surface, lately a very good hard one, is coated with a layer of woolly crystals [...] (that) cause impossible friction to the runners. God help us, we can’t keep up this pulling, that is certain.” Don’t miss an episode of Playing with Science. Have you ever considered the way your beliefs impact your life? Most of us have thought about it, but it’s only when we really dissect our perfectionism, our vulnerability, and our perception of ourselves that we can truly understand how the little things impact the big picture. Today’s guest, Sasha Cohen, former Olympic Figure Skater and National Champion, gets real personal real quick, giving us an authentic look into the intricacies of her life from first skate to last, the struggles navigating the pursuit of a new purpose, all of the way to her present-day life in New York City as an investment manager. Though once participating in a sport where vulnerability was a weakness, Sasha is nothing short of vulnerable when speaking about refunneling her energy into new projects and redirecting her life after leaving the rigorous daily routine that is associated with being a full-time athlete. Simply put, honesty is the name of today’s game-- honesty with others, honesty with our peers, and most importantly, honesty with ourselves. From 2012: Here’s something not everyone interviewing Olympic ice skater Sasha Cohen can say: She’s quoted on the front cover of my new book. It’s true: When Mind Over Business hits book shelves on March 6, there is a quote above the title from Sasha, who worked with my co-author Ken Baum in preparing for her legendary appearance and subsequent Silver Medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

This week we're doing something a little different, as Cooter and I do the show sans Lando. We cover quite a bit of ground, starting with Ron Paul getting mighty uncomfortable with Sasha Cohen and whether ignorance is ever understandable. From there we move into some more scientific realms, starting with Cooter's ideas on clean fuel before moving into the potentially huge Wolfram Alpha project. After that, we talk another innovation that has some fantastic promise: Glasshouse. All this talk about the future and amazing technology on the horizon naturally leads to some musing on the stunning things we have with us right now. Flying cars, the commonality of touch screens, toy brain scanners...the future is now baby! Enjoy! Opening Music: "Alive WIP v2" by George CarpenterClosing Music: "Blau.ton" by Rauschwerk
