They were favorites at the 1980 Olympics, but an injury ended their dream of a medal. For our series Mixed! He got caught up in changes the Trump administration made to the questions consulate officials ask people trying to become legal residents. I am excited to welcome two-time Olympian Jason Brown who became one of the youngest male figure skating Olympic medalists after winning a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. After some time, Jason decided to commit himself to the sport and prioritized performing for his happiness, not to please outside forces. Gracie Gold's story is one of the most powerful stories in figure skating. After winning the bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympic games and being regarded as America’s golden girl, Gracie hit rock bottom spiraling into a painful battle with an eating disorder, and depression. At this point in her life, Gracie did not think she would ever return to skating. Gracie takes us through her journey with mental health and how she ultimately recovered, which led her to speak out about her struggles and find her way back on the ice and hopefully to the next Olympic games. Gracie was most recently featured in Michael Phelps’ powerful documentary, “The Weight of Gold,” which features a variety of olympians who have struggled with mental health. Gracie most famously said, "America loves three stories: America loves a comeback story, America loves an underdog story, and America loves the fall of a hero. I am all three.” Produced by Dear Media

Mirai Nagasu is a figure skater who at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games became the first American woman to land a difficult triple Axel in the Olympics. Her three-and-half revolution jump helped the USA team to win a bronze medal. But Mirai's participation in the Winter Games was marked by controversy after her comments during a press conference that many perceived as criticism of her American teammates. She also suggested that her individual program was an audition for "Dancing with the Stars." During this podcast, Mirai discusses the controversial comments and her performance in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. She also reveals her disappointment about being left off the 2014 USA Olympic team despite placing 3rd at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. And Mira talks about her childhood in Southern California and her future. http://ktla.com/frankbuckleyinterviews.
What we cover: "Take the past for what it is. And then, focus on moving forward." -- Kevin Reynolds Today's guest is Kevin Reynolds. He is, of course, the Canadian figure skating super star who won silver at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, as part of the mixed team event. According to the official Olympics athlete site, he is the first skater in the world to ever land a quad-triple-triple combination, and in 2010 he became the first man ever to land two quadruple jumps in the short program – and we talk about all that goodness. But this is by no means just a talk about skating. You don’t have to be up on your figure skating lingo to follow along – despite the fact that many of us will be up on it on account of we Canadians following the recent success of our own ice dancers, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. This is a conversation about getting up after we fall – figuratively and literally. It’s about recognizing what Kevin calls that “glimmer of hope” in order to set the wheels in motion and turn a dream into reality. It’s about harnessing the adrenaline we’ve all felt at one point or another, and turning that into something positive. It’s about learning to replace the question: “What if it all goes wrong?” with “What if it all goes right?” It’s a peek behind the curtain of the present-moment focus that is required to compete and perform at this elite a level. And, it’s a conversation about the Top 5 skating movies in pop culture, and I’ve posted that complete list at MJDionne.com, under the podcaster tab. So there’s that.
American high school student Blake Stevens may have just landed the triple lutz of prom dates. He asked Canada figure skater Gabby Daleman to prom. She said she would go if he got 10K retweets. HE DID! Blake gave The Taz Show all of the details.
How do you feel about the dog meat factories in South Korea? Do you feel as strongly about it as this Olympic Figure Skater, who saved a pup from a mill by adopting it. Part 1.

As of late, Tara Lipinski has been making the rounds talking about her incredible Olympic Gold Medal Winning moment on pretty much every national television morning show possible. The reason? She's heading to South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games as a host for NBC. This is Tara 2.0. Or, maybe it's 3.0. Could be 4.0. Point is: this woman is never one to shy away from a momentous opportunity to start a new chapter in her life. Wildly aware of when to step away from something which no longer serves, unlike most, Tara sprints into the Unknown, ready to conquer any road she finds herself on. “It’s been 20 years. I almost feel like I’ve lived a second life. I’m glad I sort of accomplished all my goals at such a young age that it forced me to shed my skin and start a new life." Of course we know her as the young faced beauty who scored Gold 20 years ago...in fact, I start this interview speaking about that moment, fresh on my mind, as I watched her win on YouTube - a moment I hadn't seen since the day it happened live. Goosebumps is all I can say for two reasons. 1. The confidence, poise, and strength she carried at such a young age. 2. How had I not brought this up with her before!? We met when Tara was still living in NYC. She, like I, was single and dating. We met for dinner and drinks, talking about everything but skating; relationships, men, women, vulnerability, strength. I had been bewildered then that she was nicknamed Tara the Picky. “I landed the nickname picky. If you know yourself as a woman you kind of know your boundaries and what you want and what kind of life is going to make you happy and by 30 years old, I knew what I wanted in a guy. And I wasn’t gong to settle." This attitude then is still the reason now that I love speaking with this Woman. She is unapologetically herself, she knows what she wants, and she'll make it happen, one way or another, whether that's in her professional or personal life. We speak about her figure skating career, of her working for and winning an Olympic Gold Medal, and touring as a professional skater.. “I did miss out on all these milestones that most people get to experience. But I had this obsessive drive to be at the rink every day. It’s all I needed. I had a relationship with skating. I was in a full-time relationship with skating. It was a love-hate relationship but it was something that I wanted to do and wanted to pursue so badly.” But then, more interestingly, we move through the transition of Tara the Girl into Tara the Woman... “I realized, oh my god, I’m so behind in real life. It was hard. I was so completely lost. Finally my Mom called me and she was like, Tara, you cannot go to the rink anymore. That’s over. Figure out your life. You’re smart. You’re outgoing. Go out there and experience it.” Experiencing life for the very first, especially when she made a choice to move to New York. "It was so nice to be like screw it! I want to make friends and I want to go out and I’m gong to date a lot and I just don’t care. It was this very freeing, fun couple of years for me.” And then there's her recent marriage to Todd Kapostasy. I'll let you listen to how things evolved with them. Hint: trust the process and lose the butterflies. This truly is two girlfriends having a conversation about life and what it means to be a modern woman in today's society. Thank you Tara for sharing your Story, your Truths, and your Flaws. You're imperfectly perfect just the way you are!
Have you ever considered the way your beliefs impact your life? Most of us have thought about it, but it’s only when we really dissect our perfectionism, our vulnerability, and our perception of ourselves that we can truly understand how the little things impact the big picture. Today’s guest, Sasha Cohen, former Olympic Figure Skater and National Champion, gets real personal real quick, giving us an authentic look into the intricacies of her life from first skate to last, the struggles navigating the pursuit of a new purpose, all of the way to her present-day life in New York City as an investment manager. Though once participating in a sport where vulnerability was a weakness, Sasha is nothing short of vulnerable when speaking about refunneling her energy into new projects and redirecting her life after leaving the rigorous daily routine that is associated with being a full-time athlete. Simply put, honesty is the name of today’s game-- honesty with others, honesty with our peers, and most importantly, honesty with ourselves. Some Questions I Ask: What were your dreams as a little girl? (01:58) What was the point you realized you were good at skating? (03:24) Where do you think your expectations come from? (09:56) Are you a perfectionist? (17:33) Do you feel like you have started to learn to be fully present? (26:17) What is your new dream? (31:47) What’s one of the experiences in your past that has shaped who you are today? (49:10) In This Episode, You Will Learn: When Sasha realized that she could go further in life (04:57) The emotions behind physically falling over and over (07:23) What a competitive environment looks like from the inside (14:20) How being harsh on yourself may impact your perception of others (20:34) How appreciating things encourages joy in your life (39:25) Acknowledging your vulnerabilities can help you grow (51:20) How Sasha connected with others through being vulnerable (57:30) Plus much more... From 2012: Here’s something not everyone interviewing Olympic ice skater Sasha Cohen can say: She’s quoted on the front cover of my new book. It’s true: When Mind Over Business hits book shelves on March 6, there is a quote above the title from Sasha, who worked with my co-author Ken Baum in preparing for her legendary appearance and subsequent Silver Medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
Ignite 2 Impact Podcast - Raise up and Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders
When Meryl first fell in love with figure skating on a frozen lake by her childhood home outside of Detroit, Michigan, she had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Teaming up with partner, Charlie White at the young age of nine, Meryl and Charlie began their quest together. Neither knowing much about the discipline of ice-dance, the team was driven by a passion for skating and the desire to learn, grow and see improvement from one day to the next. 20 years later, Meryl and Charlie are the reigning Olympic Champions and the first and only Americans to win the event. They’re also six-time U.S. Champions and 2-time World Champions, making them the most decorated U.S. ice dancers of all time. Immediately following their 2014 Olympic win in Sochi, Russia, Meryl and Charlie continued to dance into the hearts of Americans on season 18 of the hit TV show, Dancing with the Stars. With pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Meryl again came away with a win and the coveted Mirrorball trophy. Continuing their post-Olympic whirlwind, Meryl and Charlie now travel the world sharing their passion for skating with some of the most loved international skating tours, including Stars on Ice. With education always having been a priority for the pair, both are currently finishing up degrees at the University of Michigan while exploring other passions and interests. For Meryl, the journey to becoming an Olympic Champion was filled with challenges and opportunities that allowed her to find strength and confidence. As such, Meryl now seeks to empower girls and young women through her multiple philanthropic endeavors. Most prominently, Meryl is proud to be a Founding Co-Chair of Figure Skating in Detroit, a youth development organization that empowers girls to develop life skills through the sport of figure skating with a heavy emphasis on education. Meryl is also on the Advisory Panel of the Women’s Sports Foundation, a UNICEF Kid Power Champion and Classroom Champions Athlete. “Meryl is a great example of beauty, achievement and giving back to the community. That's what true leaders do,” said Denise Ilitch, CEO of Ilitch Enterprises, who is the Co-Chair, Champions Committee with Figure Skating in Detroit. When not at home with her family in Birmingham, Michigan Meryl most loves sharing her story and experiences in the hopes of inspiring others to follow their dreams. Karyn Garossino, former Olympic Figure Skater is just what we needed on the podcast to help move us forward in any goal we might have. We’ve discussed over physical fitness at length on the podcast, but today we will focus on mental fitness. Karyn talks to us about building mental fitness and resilience. This podcast episode is POWERFUL! Her successes did not make her resilient. Her challenges made her resilient. Listen in to find out how those very challenges we experience are building us up for success. How to Build Resilience You can’t buy it. It’s something you must build. You need to take the challenges that come up in life, whether it’s in family, business, school or friendships and take those experiences and save them as learning opportunities. This is where mental fitness comes in. How Do We Build Mental Fitness? It’s about withstanding the negative things that come our way. Not so much about withstanding the hurt, because it is real to feel the hurt, we’re only humans. Part of this mental fitness and resilience is to be able to recover. Component parts of building mental fitness: It’s asking why. Afterall, our guest’s name is Karyn with a Y!! When you are really scared, and connecting with that fear, one of the mental skills of resilience is to turn your attention on the why you’re doing this. What does this mean to you? What values are you honoring? What contribution are you bringing to the world in this? What are the things that you most look forward to? This is the skill area of focus. This is where you choose to put your attention. Then ask, does the fear serve me? Create an image in your head of where you want to be 1 to 2 years from now, and pull that image in your head every time chaos and stress are increasing and you’re getting busier daily. The hardest thing you can do, is work hard and simply plot your feet one in front of the other. When you have your vision in your head that is a clear mental image of you in the future, you will be drawn to it even through all the obstacles, whether you go through it, over it or around it. It becomes your conveyor belt. So create your visual image!!! You can create a vision board with images, or words and engrain it in your head every time you feel the stress and obstacles coming your way. Rather than a situation controlling the outcome, you control your own outcome. If you can practice the way you want to execute a skill with mental imagery and play it out in your mind, you will be far more successful in actually implementing it. The more we do this, the more we will be able to do it. Karyn’s 3 Habits to Build Resilience Stay connected with the people that you care about. Social relationship quality. Quotes for inspiration.
