The 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal will always be remembered for the perfection of Nadia Comaneci; the golden smile from Sugar Ray Leonard; the perseverance of Bruce Jenner in the decathlon; the grace of hurdler extraordinaire Edwin Moses; and the youthful exuberance of 17-year old diver Jennifer Chandler in the 3M springboard. Two years earlier, Jenni was a 15-year old kid getting ready for those games and featured in article by Sports Illustrated. She was spending the summer with her family on their farm in a small town in Alabama... her two parents and her two sisters driving everywhere for competitions that were prepping Jenni for a shot at Gold. That hard work, determination, and sacrifice from the teenager and her "Gold Medal Driver" mother put the young girl in a position to make the U.S. diving team and once she did that, her coach, Carlos de Cubas, had her ready to reach her potential when it mattered most. 50 years after that precocious 15-year old was featured in SI we talk with the Gold Medalist about how that moment shaped the rest of her life... what it was like to be a part of the Opening Ceremonies... how hearing the National Anthem still moves her to tears and how she looks back on a time in her life when for one brief moment... she was the best in the world... Jennifer Chandler, the last U.S. woman to win Olympic Gold in the 3M diving event, is engaging, thoughtful and grateful for what diving did for her and she shares her story on the Past Our Prime podcast. We surf waves, climb mountains, and dive into odorous media mixed zones with Elliott Almond. He has earned a reputation as one of the top Olympic writers and sports investigative reporters during his adventurous career of nearly 50 years. Elliott explains how Edwin Moses led him to break a major story about steroids before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. He recalls the bunker mentality needed to report on the tragic death of Hank Gathers. Why did Marion Jones talk to Elliott after a failed relay despite despising him? Hear about the craziness of writing about figure skating on deadline, how surfing with quarterback Todd Marinovich led to Elliott taking the Wonderlic test, and how climber Alex Honnold paused to provide a unique perspective. And there's the time a Secret Service agent pointed a gun at Elliott when he was chasing Richard Nixon . . . For nearly 50 years, Almond has been a sports journalist on the West Coast, noted for his enterprise work and Olympic coverage at the Los Angeles Times (1974-1996), the Seattle Times (1996-98), and the San Jose Mercury News (1998-2021). He has been recognized by such organizations as the Associated Press Sports Editors, Best American Sports Writing, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Elliott has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times. He is currently an outdoor columnist for the Cascadia Daily News in the Pacific Northwest.   Elliott covered 14 Summer and Winter Olympics, as well as the 1999 and 2007 Pan American Games. His investigative work includes reporting on the BALCO drug scandal, steroids in international track and field, Gathers' death, Magic Johnson and the issue of HIV, and cheating in college sports at Washington, USC, UCLA, and UNLV. He wrote about such diverse subjects as the Tour de France, social issues in sports such as abuse in women's sports, crime in college and professional sports, and concussions and the consequences of traumatic brain injuries.   A life-long surfer, Almond spent much of his youth traveling the Southern California and Baja California coastlines. He is the author of the book “Surfing: Mastering Waves from Basic to Intermediate.”   From 2009-13, Elliott was an instructor for San Jose State University, where he served as an editor overseeing the production of a broadsheet newspaper by teenagers participating in a high school journalism workshop.   Elliott graduated from California State-Fullerton in 1975 with bachelor's degrees in communications and political science. Beckie Scott: still making history

Player's Own Voice

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2021 25:18

Truly history-making athletes are few and far between. Nordic skier Beckie Scott qualifies, beyond dispute. What's quietly amazing about the Canmore, Alberta native though, is that she is still changing the world, fully twenty years after becoming the first North American woman to win an Olympic medal in her sport. It took a while, but that medal became Gold, as the worm turned. Most athletes have known for years about Scott's standout integrity in a notoriously doping-plagued sport. The rest of the world woke up to her commitment to fair play when they saw her in the 2017 Oscar-winning documentary ‘Icarus'. Beckie Scott, alongside hurdling great Edwin Moses, did everything in her power to steer the World Anti Doping Agency toward binding rulings for clean competition. In the eyes of many athletes, both WADA and the IOC are still coming up short in that regard. But Scott's principled fight for fair play kept the pressure and the spotlight on. And if the world ever gets the upper hand on cheating nations and athletes, it will be Scott's work that led the charge. Which brings Scott to her latest history-making work for fairness. Nearly five years ago, she threw her energy into Spirit North, a nonprofit working with indigenous communities to give young people opportunities for sport that they would otherwise be denied. Why is this historic? Because it's working. Every year, around 6300 Indigenous kids are getting a first chance to try a variety of land -based sports. Skiing, canoeing, mountain biking… the list of sports, and communities joining the program, just keeps growing and growing. Talking about this today with Anastasia, Scott makes clear that a strong moral compass has been her guide all along. An analogy that served her WADA years was that doping was like being a starting gate that is ten meters ahead of everyone else. Scott points to the convergence of historic, systemic factors and practices that have relegated many young indigenous kids to a starting gate ten meters behind other Canadians. For Beckie Scott, it's a clear matter: a deep unfairness needs to be redressed. Making history again? That just goes with the job. And on a minor note, Beckie Scott is helping us make history yet again…By our calculations, she is the one hundredth guest on CBC Sports' Player's Own Voice podcast.

Edwin Moses began participating in track and field at an early age, but no one could have predicted where it would take him. Undersized in high school, he wasn't recruited to run track in college, and instead, went to Morehouse College on an academic scholarship to study physics. Morehouse didn't even have a track on campus, but Edwin kept training anyway using other facilities around Atlanta. While still at Morehouse, everything would change for him in 1976 when he ran his first 400m hurdle race and discovered his signature event. Just 4 months later, he would win Olympic gold and set a world record in the event in Montreal. That victory began a run of dominance in the event that would last more than a decade and include 2 gold medals and a bronze medal at the Olympics, plus a victory streak of 122 straight races that lasted almost 10 years.  In 1988 while still competing, he helped create the sport's first process for out-of-competition drug testing. Now as a board member for the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA), he continues to advocate for clean sport with the goal to ensure a level playing field for all athletes. In this episode, Chris and Kara interview Edwin to discuss it all. Edwin is undeniably the greatest 400m hurdler of all-time, but his impact off the track has perhaps been even more great. We can't thank him enough for his lifelong commitment to clean sport and for continuing to lead by example with action and not just words.

The Importance of Embracing Anger (and all of our emotions)

We're All in This Together

This week, we talk about healthy ways of feeling and expressing our anger (and all of our emotions), both at work and at home. I share my own personal experience of staying with anger to get to the root of the issue and why we tend to suppress our emotions in the first place. I also provide some of my personal favorite ways to get in touch with our emotions and express them in ways that are positive and give us our power.   Key Takeaways [2:28] When you lean into discomfort and have the sweaty-palm conversations, you often find better communication and a deeper understanding of the different perspectives and expectations. [5:53] Emotions aren’t positive or negative but become problematic when we suppress them and don’t feel them authentically. We’ve been trained as adults to suppress our emotions and be “adult” and professional, which means we can feel stuck and pent up with our feelings. [11:08] Anger is often a secondary emotion, and the bursts of anger can really be unresolved hurt and disappointment. [12:11] Being nice is one thing, but suppressing our feelings and disappointment can come out in sideways or passive-aggressive ways. There is value in giving ourselves the freedom to identify and tap into all emotions. [19:22] Emotions come and go, and feeling a certain way is different than being that way.  When we say “I’m feeling mad,'' as opposed to “I’m mad,” it makes it more about the passing emotion and less about living in a state of anger. [26:15] A few of Mike’s best techniques for processing our feelings and getting them out: write an anger letter, practice visualization, journal, do healthy productive things to get the anger out physically. [29:05] Great leaders provide a safe space for their team to express their emotion. It takes emotional intelligence and maturity but will help establish a place others can share openly without judgment or fear.  Resources: Purchase Bring Your Whole Self to Work and gain access to bonus material Mike Robbins Website Mike Robbins Podcast Mike Robbins on Facebook Mike Robbins on Twitter Mike Robbins on Instagram “How to Embrace the Discomfort of Creating What Matters To Us”   Wayne Dyer  Edwin Moses

Started singing early, formed a girl group at age eleven. Changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi at thirteen and started running around with the Fred Hampton and the Panthers.  In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (1991), Woman Thou Art Loosed (2004)   105.    Why is it featured: The Soundtrack is DOPE!!   106.    Short Story: An episodic comedy about a day in the lives of the employees and the owner of a Los Angeles car wash.   107.    Critic Review: "Car Wash initially left critics unimpressed (except for Roger Ebert who correctly called it a "wash-and-wax M*A*S*H") but over the decades both the film and the soundtrack have left their mark on pop culture. With its Afros, bell-bottoms, cars as big as boats, and disco soundtrack, Car Wash is a perfect time-capsule of America's bicentennial year." - http://www.threemoviebuffs.com/review/car-wash.html   108.    [Audio Clips]   109.    Open Comments   110.    TV Scene   111.    What: What's Happening!!   112.    Who: Starring Ernest Lee Thomas, Haywood Nelson, Fred Berry, Danielle Spencer, Mabel King, Shirley Hemphill   113.    Why is it featured: The last show dedicated to black families until(?) The Cosby Show in 1984. The next few years introduced the interracial family dynamic. (Different Strokes like stuff.)   114.    Short Story: Loosely based on Cooley High. What's Happening!! follows the lives of three working-class African-American teens living in Watts.   115.    Critic Review: Unlike its contemporary Good Times, What's Happening!! isn't committed to presenting enlightening social commentary or providing empowering African-American role models. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. While the show has its funny moments (especially when Dee offers her strong, often sarcastic opinions), much of the show's humor stems from a slapstick-like comedy style that's reminiscent of the minstrel show stereotypes of the 1930s - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/whats-happening   116.    [Audio Clips]   117.    Open Comments:   118.    Final Question: Biggest legacy from 1976?
