"If you think it’s just fun, you’ve never interviewed Mick Jagger because that motherfucker will rip you into shreds." Freelance journalist Paul Schrodt (@paulschrodt) takes the podcast to a very different place, telling us what it’s like to report on the business of entertainment. He also got into digital journalism at a time when it was still the wild west but just starting to overtake print journalism, providing a window into that fascinating time. Note: This is a special extended episode in light of coronavirus. As an Evangelical Southern Baptist preacher’s kid from the South, Deb Schrodt’s whole world centered around church and pleasing the elders. Her spiritual journey was a search for what felt authentic in love, music, and church. Ironically, Deb found love at Exodus International, a gay conversion group. She claimed her unique relationship with God and now writes affirming spiritual music. “If I had known it was okay to be my authentic self, I would have been that much sooner.” ~Deb Schrodt debbieschrodt.com

Anyone in a long distance relationship will tell you how hard it can be. And dating or marrying across countries comes with a huge list of expenses and immigration headaches. While people from different countries meet and fall in love all the time, why would anyone seek out a relationship with these complications from the start? The "mail order bride" concept has been around for centuries, and the modern equivalent are dating apps that facilitate specific international relationships: ColumbianCupid, JamaicanDating, ChinaLoveCupid. There's even a hit reality TV show called 90 Day Fiancé that has brought these apps into the zeitgeist. But as journalist Paul Schrodt discovered, while people sign up for these apps under a variety of circumstances, there is a prevailing theme: white American men of means connecting with attractive women from economically disadvantaged countries. So, are these apps about fetishizing ethnicity and forming transnational relationships? Or is there something deeper to be gleaned from the successful marriages born of international dating apps? Alli and Jen talk to Schrodt about his experience using the apps and connecting with single men and women from around the globe. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
“How much can there really be to learn about storytelling?” I thought when I started on this mini-series. It turns out that there’s actually quite a lot to learn, and that family storytelling can be a particularly useful tool for parents. We’re all trying to figure out how to transmit our values to our children, and storytelling can be quite an effective way of doing this. Further, storytelling can be a really valuable way to support children in overcoming traumatic experiences. In this episode we dig into the research on the benefits of family storytelling and look at how to do it. References Bylund, C.L. (2003). Ethnic diversity and family stories. Regular listeners will recall that we are working through a couple of different series of episodes at the moment; one on the importance of play, and the other on storytelling. On the storytelling front, we started by talking with Dr. Deena Weisberg of the University of Pennsylvania about what children learn from fictional stories, and then we learned about the positive impacts that storytelling can have on children’s academic outcomes – and by storytelling I mean stories that are learned and told rather than read. Today we’re going to talk about a concept that Dr. Laura Froyen, who has been on the show a couple of times introduced me to – and that is the idea of family stories. These are the stories told within families about some or all of the family members’ experiences, some of which may be told so often that they become known as family legacies. I was particularly...
I've got the recent winner of the Funniest Person in Bloomington, David Britton, and special guest, Jonas Schrodt is back for an episode while I was in town! Episode 13: Visiting Bloomington edition! SPECIAL GUEST Jonas Schrodt returns! We talk about our new listeners, whites with dreads, funerals, Mambo #5 and more! E-mail me at Girlsnightbrady@gmail.com.
This one is a little different and a little longer. Jonas Schrodt is a special guest! We talk about our first breakups, and good friend Jordan Mather-Licht comes on to tell an insane story. Warning, this one gets a little bit explicit around the end due to the nature of the story. It also gets a little sexy at the end, so I hope that doesn't interfere with your dance parties to this podcast.
