In episode 43 we welcome back CARLA L. PETERSON (from Ep. 28), author of the 2011 book “Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City.” Carla takes us inside the parties, pleasures, and fashionable lifestyles of New York's Black middle class of the 19th century, and how the philsophy of "taste" informed the lives of that century's Black American elite. We also talk about how the separate and elite lives of 19th century New York “old money,” “new money,” and the Black elite are interpreted for the HBO series, THE GILDED AGE. Carla's book, “Black Gotham,” served as a resource for the creation of the Scott family in THE GILDED AGE now in its second season. THE GILDED AGE is created by Julian Fellowes (DOWNTON ABBEY). There are many things in life we can ask God for, but the Bible urges us to seek wisdom above all things. On this month's podcast episode of If You Really Knew Me Ben and Kim discuss all the wonderful ways God's wisdom is displayed through His children and how we can glean from each other.BIBLE VERSES:1 Kings 3:9 AMPSo give your servant an understanding mind (wisdom) and a hearing heart with which to judge your people, so that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge and rule this great people of Yours?James 1:5 ESVIf any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.James 3:17 ESVBut the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.Proverbs 3:13 - 18 ESVBlessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ...Proverbs 1:7 ESVThe fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.Romans 11:33 NLTOh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! Date: March 1, 2023Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S4: E7: Bailey Rae - Oklahoma Girl & Gypsy CowboysArtist Bio -Bailey Rae is a rising singer/songwriter with roots planted deep in country music. Growing up in a musical family, she started her collection of classic country vinyl at an early age and was gifted many country albums belonging to her great-great-grandmother. Listening to those legendary voices like Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Don Williams, Bailey Rae quickly discovered a love for classic country music which continues to be a big influence in her voice and musical style today.Since the age of thirteen, Bailey Rae has been performing regularly on stages from Texas, and Oklahoma to Arkansas and from Branson, Nashville, and Pigeon Forge. In 2020, she had the opportunity to share her pure country voice with millions of fans on the biggest stage of her life – NBC's The Voice, where she had the honor of becoming the first true country artist to ever be on Team Legend. Bailey Rae's Blind Audition was a very memorable moment with both Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson making promises to steal her if she became available on the show. She quickly caught the attention of country music fans from across the nation and finished The Voice Season 19 as a Top 9 Semi-Finalist out of 40,000 auditions for the season. One could say that Bailey Rae has always been drawn to the big stage, as she discovered her love for performing at just five years old when joining a competitive clogging team. Over the years, she won multiple National Championships and competed at a World Dance Championship competition. Bailey Rae had been singing in church for years and after hearing of a vocal coach in Denison, Texas, she began performing with the Shawnda Rains Entertainment Group. While on her first performance trip in Branson, Missouri, Bailey Rae realized her desire to sing on stage and immediately hung up her clogging shoes to start the pursuit of a career in country music. This small-town Oklahoma girl calls Texas her second home and was named the 2020-2021 Ambassador for the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Bailey Rae has opened for country music greats such as TG Sheppard, Whispering Bill Anderson, Jeannie C Riley, Linda Davis, The Scott Family, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Doug Stone and Texas Country Artists, Flatland Calvary, and Jake Worthington. In October 2021, Bailey Rae was invited by her Voice Coach, John Legend, to share the stage with him at the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK to sing a duet. It was an amazing opportunity and something she will never forget. Bailey Rae has also headlined many shows, festivals and events, and tours regularly with her band.ponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.baileyraemusic.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/baileyraemusic/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/baileyraemusicTwitter - https://twitter.com/baileyraemusicCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Episode 28 features a conversation with CARLA L. PETERSON, author of the 2011 book “Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City.” Professor Peterson's book served as a resource for the creation of the characters, story, and the Black community in HBO's THE GILDED AGE. Part detective tale, part social and cultural narrative, "Black Gotham" is Carla Peterson's riveting account of her quest to reconstruct the lives of her nineteenth-century ancestors. As she shares their stories and those of their friends, neighbors, and business associates, she illuminates the greater history of African-American elites in New York City. (Source: Yale University Press) Carla L. Peterson is professor emerita in the Department of English at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a specialist in nineteenth-century African American literary and cultural studies. In addition to "Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City" (published in 2011) she has published numerous essays and a second book "Doers of the Word: African-American Women Speakers and Writers in the North, 1830-1880" (1995). Carla Peterson is currently at work on a new project, "Urbanity and Taste: The Making of African American Modernity in Antebellum New York and Philadelphia." I am going to start with, I don't get paid to promote brands nor do I accept payment to feature them on my podcast - in fact, when I started this podcast I didn't want to discuss brands. Unfortunately, I found that this is absolutely impossible mostly because every day I am asked which brand is best and which brand will help an animal that is unwell become well...it's a tough ask by pet owners mainly because of the amount of banter on the web. The big dollars spent on ads and the big number of brands entering the marketplace because pet food and pet products consistently create big revenue with low upfront investment requirements committed to ingredient quality has made the pet food segment a place of havoc and chaos for the pet owners. I want pet owners and independent pet retailers to know that there is more out there than what comes up on the first 2 pages of a Google search for BEST pet food. Where the big brands have the upper hand and power is the money they spend on the advertisements and brand recognition all over the web and the veterinary clinics (a big share owned by pet food manufacturers). These foods being advertised have been consistently the foods that cause all of my clients to be clients !!! The advertising dollars pushing the unsubstantiated claims won't get any of our pets eating quality products but will lead the masses into thinking whatever the brands want them to think - my purpose with my food episodes is to introduce and open up the conversation about those brands that commit to bringing quality and some sort of moral code to a very unregulated and ethically devoid industry. A Great Scott Station WPAZ AM Pottstown in Suburban Philadelphia PA. June 8, 1971. R Alan Campbell covering an air shift for Herb Scott who needed a cover DJ for his vacationing afternoon man. The station, which signed on in 1951, was originally owned by the Scott Family, and later, their subsidiary, Great Scott Broadcasting, Inc. Over time, WPAZ became the "flagship station" for Great Scott Broadcasting, as corporate operations for its expanding group were handled out of the station's Maugers Mill Road studio location. During the period that Herb and Faye Scott owned the company, WPAZ was one of its strongest properties, despite the station's status as a daytime-only station for much of its existence. WPAZ was a typical full-service station of its time, boasting music, local news and high school sports, local talk shows, church services, and remote broadcasts. Music formats varied from adult contemporary, oldies and adult standards. Following Herb Scott's death in 1984, the company gradually shifted its focus from AM to FM by selling its properties in Ohio and western Pennsylvania, and acquiring signals in the Delmarva area. GSB corporate functions were later moved to Delaware after son Mitchell Scott assumed control of the stations after the turn of the 21st century. Nonetheless, WPAZ remained a part of Great Scott's portfolio. WPAZ ceased operations on December 10, 2009, due to lack of sufficient revenue as Great Scott citing a focus on its other, more-profitable stations. Faye Scott died November 7, 2010. In 1971 the station was in the process of moving from it's High Street location to "The Lodge" being constructed at the transmitter site on Maugers Mill Road. Aircheck features hourly Mutual newscast with veteran announcer Del Sharbutt. "We have watched them learn and develop so much in the last 6 months" " They love it and want to learn more, which is nice" WOW!! This episode is jam packed with so many tips and advice on Home Schooling KIDS on the road! Brodie Scott and her family Tim, Marley and River ditched the daily grind for a life on the road. They have been travelling for 6 months, leaving Victoria and are currenlty in W.A. After doing lots of research and exploring different options, Brodie chose to homeschool her 2 boys Marley Grade 1 and River who is in Kindy. Brodie and Tim are by no means experts when it comes to teaching their kids, they are doing the best they can, tailoring it to suit the boys different levels and their lifestyle. Which is why they love homeschooling and its flexibility. They made the decision to stick to the routine of Monday - Friday, Weeekends and School Holidays. Their main day to day focus is reading, writing, spelling and maths, following a learning plan which they created themselves. Brodie is really enjoying helping Marley and River learn and develop in ways that she wouldnt normally get to experience if they were in mainstream schooling. In this episode you will learn so many ways to home school through certain books, app's and websites that the Scott Family use for their kids as well as plenty of outdoor fun in nature and exploring Australia. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
There's a problem in our hearts that is not a new problem. We have hearts that are prone to wander from God. Hillary Scott & The Scott Family sing of this very thing in their rendition of the famous hymn, "Come Thou Fount." These lyrics will take us on a wonderful journey through Scripture this week. Perhaps you'll find a place to sit and stay for a while with the Source of all our fountains. In this episode, I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Reading in context Journaling The 30 Day Music Challenge How all of our fountains are in Him - Psalm 87:7 Allowing God to tune our hearts like a master musician Understanding the significance of the Ebenezer stone - 1 Samuel 4-7 The time "when completeness comes" - 1 Corinthians 13:9-12 Wandering hearts are not a new phenomenon - Deuteronomy 31:16 We can be sealed for "Thy courts above" - Ephesians 1:13-14 Additional Resources Purchase the album or single on Amazon Lyrics and chords "Come Thou Fount" lyrics - New Release Today Song story "Come Thou Fount" as sung by Hillary Scott and Family - YouTube Video Behind the hymn "Come Thou Fount" - Hymnary.org article Weekly Challenge Choose a phrase that resonates with you from our hymn and spend some time in Scripture this week. Perhaps you could take your time through the story found in 1 Samuel chapters 4-7. It may just inspire you to pull out your own Ebenezer stone and add a symbol of remembrance to your walk with God. Perhaps you need to surrender to the call of the gospel -- to believe and receive the seal of the Holy Spirit on your life. Emily Weisband (Grammy award winning songwriter and artist behind BTS's "Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey)," Camila Cabello's "Consequences," "Team" by Noah Cyrus and MAX, and "Thy Will, With Hillary Scott and The Scott Family) feels that peace, confidence, security, and contentment aren't natural for humans. But through quarantine and her journey in the making of I Call It Being Human EP, she has taken practice in harnessing her inner dichotomy for the unnatural, and the act of oversharing is no longer a faux pas.

About the Show: We recently sat down with Joel Gordon, Chief Maker, and Tinkerer at the Scott Family Amazeum in Bentonville. Originally from Central Arkansas, Joel has had a lifetime of experience creatively using his mind and his hands to build and create great things. After learning he had dyslexia, Joel leveraged several opportunities that took him from learning the in’s and out’s of the theatre while in high school, then moving on to the Airforce after high school, and then the University of Alaska in Anchorage where he got back involved in Theatre. After Graduation, Joel spent time in the film industry in LA and NY before ending up back in Arkansas. This return to Arkansas brought Joel one step closer to the profession he loves so much. Joel’s father and grandfather were both great carpenters who were highly skilled with their hands. He got his “Making and Tinkering,” talent honestly and eventually parlayed it into a role in the redesign of the Children’s area of the Museum of Discovery in Central Arkansas. That project led to a managing role at the museum and a relationship with Sam Dean that eventually led to Joel making his way to Northwest Arkansas to lend his considerable talents to the Amazeum. Joel has the enviable job of creating something from nothing and getting into the minds of young people that come from all over the Ozark region and beyond to dream, imagine, create, and learn what’s possible in life through the many exhibits and programs at the Scott Family Amazeum. You have to hear Joel’s whole story to appreciate where he’s been and where he is going. Listen to this podcast and read the transcript to learn more about Joel, the Scott Family Amazeum, and why he thinks Northwest Arkansas is such a great place to be.
