D.J. Harry is the pastor of Needhams Grove Baptist Church in Seagrove, North Carolina. His undergraduate training was in science education which led him to teach high school chemistry, biology, and physics for eight years. However, in 2005, God directed his steps into pastoral ministry. He received his M.Div. from Piedmont International University and will complete his D.Min. in 2025. A featured speaker at marriage conferences, parenting conferences, and camps, DJ is known for his Bible-centered preaching and for his passion for the Lord. DJ and his wife, Lorrie, were married in 1997. They have four adult children that are all serving the Lord!

There is no formula for raising a child to be a lifelong follower of Christ. There is no 5 or 10 or even 20-step program to raising godly kids. Parents have a vital part to play as we commit to raise our children biblically, but we cannot choose the faith for our kids. So what happens when you do your part as parents. You are diligent about training your kids biblically, and the spiritual formation of your children is first and foremost in your mind. You have gone to church but didn't leave the responsibility of teaching your kids up to the church. You have done the devotionals, taught the Bible stories, memorized the Scriptures, and you've had the deep conversations… And you get a different result than you were expecting. Your child doubts. Your child wanders. Your child takes a different path, perhaps the prodigal path. What then? Catherine and her guest DJ Harry cover this tear-jerking territory as they continue to glean parenting wisdom from the book of Daniel. Pastor Harry shares the following powerful parenting lessons from the first chapter of Daniel: We don't get to choose when or how our children's faith will be tested. (Daniel 1:1) A well-rounded education is a necessary part of significant influence. (Daniel 1:4) There was an intentional transfer of faith from Daniel's parents to Daniel. (Daniel 1:8) Daniel knew how to appeal to his ungodly authorities Daniel. (Daniel 1:11-13) But even when we parent biblically to the best of our ability, even when we apply all these lessons, some kids will choose to wander. That does not absolve parents from our responsibility to train our children in the way they should go, which includes taking to heart these incredible lessons we can learn from the book of Daniel. But the results are not up to us. Parents must remember that we are not judged by God for our results. We are judged by God for our faithfulness. And our faithfulness in standing our ground, in maintaining that godly witness as our kids go out on their own, and our faithfulness to pray over our kids every day—that work will not return void. Raising kids to stand strong in the faith while living in a godless culture is the greatest challenge Christian parents face today. In a world where a majority of kids from Christian households leave the faith after leaving the nest, what can Christian parents do to establish a firm spiritual foundation for their children? Catherine and Pastor DJ Harry look to the book of Daniel to answer that question. Four young men in this prophetic Old Testament book stayed committed to God in a very dark and godless culture. They stood when everyone else bowed. They prayed to the one true God when it could cost their lives. DJ has identified four lessons that parents can take from Daniel and his friends that will aid in the spiritual formation of our children. The first two lessons are covered in this episode. They are: We don't get to choose when or how our children's faith will be tested. (Daniel 1:1) “In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.” A well-rounded education is a necessary part of significant influence. (Daniel 1:4) Daniel and his friends were “young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace.” We don't know when or how our children will be tested, so we must be diligent about establishing a well-rounded spiritual education for our kids. It is our job as godly parents to be very intentional about the spiritual formation of our children. That preparation is the rich soil from which the seeds of truth can flourish. God plants the seeds. As parents, we nourish the soil and put our kids in environments where that planting can take place. In “North Carolina Pottery from Clay to Kiln” Gravy producer Wilson Sayre invites us to consider the vehicles that our food sits on—plates. In this episode, she takes us to central North Carolina, where the story of the hand-thrown pottery and its relationship with food is told with gusto. If you eat with your eyes, then the “plating” of food is an essential component of a meal and the stories that surround it. In North Carolina, the history of baking clay into utilitarian—and beautiful—plates and bowls is an ancient one. That tradition has been handed down for generations and interpreted by each potter who chose to let the clay get under their fingernails. Today, Seagrove, in the central part of the state, is home to the largest concentration of studio potters in the United States. Each potter has their own journey, but as Mark Hewitt explains, it's all a bit “mad.” He, like many potters, spends weeks or months turning lumps of clay into beautiful vessels. One by one, pots, pitchers and plates take shape on the pottery wheel, receive decoration, and are set into a kiln to undergo their final transformation from brittle dried clay into gleaming vessels. But that transformation is also a gamble, especially for those who fire with wood. Pots can explode, destroying everything in a kiln, or the firing temperature gets too hot (or not hot enough), causing glazes to turn unappealing colors. And yet they take that gamble over and over again. It's how they tell stories, of place and of their artistic journey. Plates are also our story as eaters, says Glenn Hinson, professor of folklore and anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whether paper or porcelain, plates shape our relationship with the food they hold, as well as our memories of a meal. In this episode, Sayre speaks with Hewitt and Hinson, as well as Delores J. Farmer, founder of Durham's first Black-owned pottery studio, to learn more about the synergies between dirt, food, and plate. With the spotlight shifted to what's underneath our food, we hope listeners will see this whole other canvas for story. Because in the end, when our food is gone, when we're gone, it's from our plates that people will learn about our foodways. Thanks to guest Mark Hewitt, who opens his pottery twice a year for kiln openings. Thanks also to guest Delores Farmer, who offers classes at her studio to folks in Durham, NC, who are interested in getting a bit of clay under their fingernails. Glenn Hinson and his wife, Amy Bauman, were kind enough to welcome the reporter into their home, share a meal, and provide some of the most beautiful plates for the feast. Although they were not featured in this episode, special thanks to professor Bernie Herman for help in pointing us in the right direction and potter Matt Hallyburton, for providing background context and making beautiful work. Enter the fantasy world of Paul Haigh, a chemist turned potter, who creates weird stuff for weird people. His work is a blend of his fascination with horror, mythology, science fiction, and games like Dungeons and Dragons. Ultimately, Paul sees his work as an escape from the real world. Paul is known for his face jugs, which are wheel-turned jugs with faces stuck on them. Traditionally, the faces are abstract or even cartoonish, but Paul enjoys making his look realistic. Originally face jugs were made by enslaved people in the American South. There are many theories on the original purposes of face jugs, ranging from religious practices to grave markers. It is common for the expressions and features on face jugs to be scary. The creepy faces may have been designed to scare off evil spirits or to keep children from consuming booze stored inside. This type of pottery fell out of favor in the 1920s but was later revitalized by potters to sell to tourists. Sculpting realistic human faces is a challenge. Our brains are specialized in recognizing human faces and we can easily spot mistakes. It took years of practice for Paul to be satisfied with his work. There's a lot of broken pottery from when he was still learning. Paul enjoys interacting with collectors at art shows. He loves that a significant portion of his collectors are women over 60. With their wisdom and confidence, they no longer care what others think of them and they collect what they want. Paul lives in central North Carolina, near Seagrove, the pottery capital of the United States. Highway 705, which runs through the region, is nicknamed the Pottery Highway. Paul was a potter prior to moving to NC from New Hampshire. One of the highlights of creating pottery in NH was his wood firing kiln, made from 30,000 pounds of brick with a 15-foot chimney. To create this star-studded midlife montage episode, Michelle went to meet three fabulous women – Dame Judi Dench, her actress daughter Finty Williams and star of screen and stage, Jenny Seagrove. In the first of a series of montages to celebrate being a midlife or older woman, Michelle asked them all what was the best thing about life in our second spring. Liz and Michelle chat about Jenny Seagrove's charity Mane Chance Sanctuary that rescues and rehabilitates horses with the community, Dame Judi's tik-tok star grandson, Sam William, dancing with Louis Theroux, Skyfall filming anecdotes and how Judy Dench uses her photographic memory to help her work despite age-related macular degeneration, diagnosed in 2012. “In my mind's eye I'm 6 feet and willowy and about 39,” she told the Guardian in an interview in 2021. You'll be glad to know Dame Judi did not disappoint - her warmth, laughter and personality shone through, despite her 88 years she is as vibrant as ever - and quite the tik-tok dancer! KEY TAKEAWAYS Whether you see yourself as old is down to how you think about age. Being a midlife woman translates into freedom to do what you want. The older you get, the less what others think matters. Being around young people, staying active, and doing what you love keeps you feeling young, regardless of age. BEST MOMENTS “There is no such thing as an older woman. You still feel incessantly young and ridiculous, but you don´t care so much.” “I don´t have to worry about whether I´m the thinnest or the most glamorous.” “Clint Eastwood said – don´t let the old man in, the same goes for women” “That´s why god gave me elbows.” If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, and review it on your podcast platform. We talk about real concerns, issues, and fun topics that affect us, our friends, and our family. Midlife is not just about the menopause (although we'd be the first to admit it's right up there!) but it is a time of adventure, change and reset - with plenty of opportunities and challenges along the way. Didon Comer and Garrett Horn are some of the longest living full time residents in South Walton… and they're among the VERY FIRST RESIDENTS OF SEAGROVE. Before bridges were built… before roads were paved… before there were grocery stores and restaurants of any kind… there was Didon Comer's $3000 gulf-front property in Seagrove Beach. Garrett Horn, author of “Postcards of Seagrove”, shares stories alongside Didon about what is was like to live as pioneers in one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. They describe vivid scenes of a different, more innocent time in South Walton; like uncovering ancient Native American pottery in the dunes, hanging out in the general store that is now Red Bar, and being the only people on the beach for miles in any direction. We also talk about the rich artistic heritage of the area. Of why it isn't a coincidence that, through the years, so many Creatives have called this place home. Before this episode, I held a strong belief that Walton County is somehow special. Magical, even. That the magic that permeats here actually pre-exists us. Now I'm sure of it.

Full of Riches takes listeners into the world of Seagrove, N.C. where TAPS students are taught the region’s celebrated pottery tradition by master artist and N.C. Heritage Award recipient Sid Luck. The North Carolina Arts Council created TAPS, a statewide network of after school programs, in response to community requests for traditional arts education taught locally, knee-to-knee, and across generations. TAPS is an intergenerational story. It's a story about community and pride in place. It’s a story about the role the N.C. Arts Council plays in helping North Carolinians use their artistic traditions to thrive as individuals and as communities. From pottery to bluegrass to the arts and crafts of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, TAPS programs across the state represent the diversity of North Carolina’s cultural life and heritage. Each program is uniquely shaped by the community, but all share three core values: Programs are affordable, and often free. Students learn the traditional arts of their own region, from teachers within their community. Music is taught by ear, and crafts are taught by hand. Through field recordings and interviews collected by N.C. Arts Council staff, this episode is the first of three in a new season of Arts Across NC that highlights the diverse TAPS programs across the state. This episode featured field recordings from Haliwa-Saponi TAPS class and Pow wows. Ben Owen III '93, potter and owner of Ben Owen Pottery, Seagrove, NC. Originally aired November 4, 2006.
In North Carolina and across the nation, Seagrove, NC equals pottery. People from across the nation and around the world come to Seagrove to buy various styles of pottery and muse over the delightful glazes and awesome colors. In The Potters of Seagrove, renowned potters like Sid Luck, Ben Owen, Vernon Owens and the King family show off their wares and relate how they decided to make pottery their career. In addition, scenes from Sid Luck's annual birthday celebration and the North Carolina Pottery Festival give a fun twist to an art that often invites a reverent silence as pottery and non-pottery fans alike marvel over intricately designed pieces. The Potters of Seagrove introduce other modes of pottery as well, such as face jugs, sure to bring a grin to those who look at them, and pottery sculpture, figurines made without the use of a wheel. See what a kiln looks like and see Raku pottery made before your eyes. In addition, come to the North Carolina Pottery Center and meet Terry Zug, the expert on the history of pottery in North Carolina.
Host David Holt begins by introducing Dale McCoy, who demonstrates his style of finger picking, a style viewers may recognize from The Potters of Seagrove. Wayne Henderson not only dazzles audiences with the flight of his fingers, but he invites us into his guitar shop, where he explains the precision and care involved in handcrafting a guitar. Paul Graybeal, known well by people who collect guitars, handcrafts miniature and full-sized guitars, but devotes as much time and care to the process as one would do with a guitar that can play. Bryan Sutton demonstrates flat-picking and its variations and explains the demands made of a session player in Nashville. As a final treat, David Holt plays alongside the legendary Doc Watson, one of the great pioneers of Appalachian folk music.
