Mother's Quest Podcast
Honoring Black Mothers: A Special Mother's Day Episode with Anna Malaika Tubbs, Author of The Three Mothers

Welcome to Season Six of the Mother’s Quest Podcast and this special Mother’s Day episode, which shines a light on the untold stories and far-reaching impact of mothers and in particular Black mothers. For this episode, I had the honor of talking with Anna Malaika Tubbs, the brilliant biographer of the groundbreaking book The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation. In addition to being a mother to a 1 year old boy with another child on the way, Anna is an author, advocate, educator, scholar and Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. Growing up abroad and influenced by her exposure to all kinds of cultures and beliefs, and by her own mother’s work advocating internationally for women’s and children’s rights, Anna uses an intersectional lens to advocate for women of color and to educate others. During her time as an undergraduate student at Stanford University, Anna took from what she’d seen in her parents’ work and began honing her own identity as an activist. As the First Partner of Stockton, CA, she co-authored the first-ever “Report on the Status of Women in Stockton” to guide future policy decisions with the experiences of diverse women in mind. She’s published articles featured in the Huffington Post, For Harriet, Darling Magazine and Blavity, on issues ranging from mass incarceration to the forced sterilization of Black women, as well as the importance of feminism, intersectionality, and inclusivity. Throughout all her work and writing, she draws on her personal experience and extensive research to examine and make relevant gender and race issues in the US, especially the pervasive erasure of Black women. In this incredible debut book, The Three Mothers, Anna celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America’s most pivotal civil rights heroes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. Alberta King, Louise Little and Berdis Baldwin were all born at the beginning of the 20th century, all were forced to contend with the prejudices of Jim Crow as Black women, all forged their own unique paths, using their beliefs and talents to shape not only their children but those around them, and all three had to bury their children, two of them after losing their sons to gun violence. In these mothers and their stories, amidst the pain and grief, there also existed vibrancy, love and conviction. One of my biggest takeaways from my conversation with Anna is the importance of acknowledging the continued injustices that Black women endure today and that although Black women continue to experience tremendous grief, they also experience joy and they are not “a conquered victim," but are living through life as whole human beings. My Mother’s Day wish is that you will find time and space to slow down and truly listen to Anna’s insights about the mothers whose stories she so beautifully tells, that you will get and read her book The Three Mothers, and that you’ll join me in saying “yes” to Anna’s challenge. She asks that all of us advance our understanding of different forms of motherhood. Picking up books she says, especially those that focus on Black mothers and Black motherhood, can bring healing for everybody.   Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. This Episode is Dedicated by: Sybrina Fulton After the death of her beloved son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in February 2012, Sybrina Fulton was charged with a new mission. A desire to transform family tragedy into social change allowed her to establish the Trayvon Martin Foundation in March 2012. As Fulton traverses the globe, she passionately embarks on a journey designed to bring awareness to senseless gun violence and serves as an advocate to families, the catalyst for her dream project, the “Circle of Mothers.” Winning the national support of president-elect Hillary Clinton, Fulton rallied to the forefront in 2016 at the Democratic National Convention with a cadre of African American trailblazing women known as “Mothers of the Movement.” The women, connected by tragedy, are the inspiration behind  “Black Lives Matter.” In 2017, Fulton co-authored her first book, Rest in Power, The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, a memoir recounting the death of her son, and the subject of a six-part docuseries, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, produced by hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter for Paramount Network and BET (July 2018). Bestowed with many distinguished awards, Sybrina Fulton has represented the United States at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss racial discrimination; the National Urban League, Black Lives Matter, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, The Triumph Awards (2016), Essence Festival & Conference (2017, 2018), and was selected as the White House’s guest of honor for the unveiling of former President Barak Obama’s initiative, “My Brother’s Keeper.” Fulton is also one of the 2018 recipients of VH1’s Trailblazer Honor Award. A Miami native and graduate of Florida Memorial University, Sybrina Fulton, along with her son, Jahvaris, are on a mission to build better, safer communities. She is a proud member of the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Metropolitan Dade County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. She created the Circle of Mothers to bring together mothers who have lost children or family members to senseless gun violence for the purpose of healing, empowerment, and fellowship towards the larger aim of community building.    Connect with Sybrina: Facebook  Twitter  Instagram Trayvon Martin Foundation   Give a Mother’s Day Gift: Help mothers heal from the loss of a loved one by supporting and donating to the Circle of Mothers, Sybrina’s weekend retreat for mothers who have lost a child to gun violence. You can support the cause here. Special thanks to Jill Daniel of Happy Women Dinners for introducing us to Anna and her work!    In This Episode We Talk About: Anna's commitment to fighting the erasure of Black women's stories. What inspired Anna to focus her first book on the mothers of sons of the Civil Rights Movement. How painful moments like George Floyd's murder, and joyful moments like Stacy Abram's organizing in Georgia, had Anna editing and adding more relevance right up until the book was published. Anna’s decision to focus on MLK Jr., Malcolm X and James Baldwin as the three famous sons, and their mothers, Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin whose stories she would tell. The lessons revealed in Anna's book that all mothers can learn from across the E.P.I.C. guideposts. The importance of acknowledging that Black women are "not a conquered victim" but living through life as a whole human being. Anna's challenge for all mothers listening to expand our awareness through reading and her hope that this book will be seen as a celebration of Black womanhood.   This Episode's Challenge: Anna invites us to think about what we can all read to advance our understanding of different forms of motherhood. Picking up books that focus on Black mothers and Black motherhood can bring healing for everybody. The more we are informed, the more conscious we become.  Anna’s next recommendation after finishing her book: The Power of Purpose by Alicia Garza which begins with a powerful description of the impact of Alicia’s mother on her.    Learn More More About Anna: Anna Malaika Tubbs is an Author, advocate, educator, and a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. If you’re anything like us, you’ve been watching more than your fair share of Netflix this past year. And with such great original content, from The Queen’s Gambit to more obscure shows like Midnight Diner, we were curious what it takes from a product design perspective to create and deliver these shows to a massive audience, in a way that’s accessible not only to audiences here in the US, but all around the world. So we sat down to chat with Steve Johnson, Vice President of Design, and Rochelle King, Vice President of Creative Production at Netflix, to talk about how they approach inclusive design for a global audience, how they use a data-informed rather than data-driven product strategy, and why looking for passion rather than for credentials might be the key to your next great hire. This is the last episode of Season Five of the Design Better Podcast. But don’t worry, Season Six is just around the corner, where we’ll be sharing interviews with guests like bestselling author Dan Pink, who will teach us how to use persuasion to be better at our jobs, and Professor Sara Seager, an astrophysicist and planetary scientist whose research on exoplanets can shed light on how we can be better collaborators here on Earth. Also, in-between seasons we’re going to do a bonus Q&A show, where you’ll have a chance to record your questions about design, creativity, leadership, or any of the topics we cover here on the show and we’ll do our best to answer them. Just head over to http://dbtr.co/ama and fill out the short survey there to submit your question.  Takeaways: Learn about the ROI for inclusive design Hear how the design team at Netflix approaches the power dynamics between product and design Understand how to prioritize and say no to work that won’t impact the business

In the words of Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb: “In the name of God … we declare the adoption of a culture of dialogue as the path; mutual cooperation as the code of conduct; reciprocal understanding as the method and standard.” Today’s podcast explores the implications of this vision for Roman Catholics, and indeed for all people of good will. We also invite you to help build this “culture of encounter” on Wednesday, February 3, when we present a panel of distinguished interfaith scholars and leaders discussing Pope Francis’ encyclical. See below for details.  _________________________________________ Podcast Questions? Comments? Have a question for our guests or comment on our podcast series? Wendy Osefo, fresh off her Freshman season on The Real Housewives of Potomac, steps Behind The Rope. Contract in hand for Season Six, Wendy is here to reflect back upon her just finished Freshman Season and look ahead as to what is to come for The Real Housewives of Potomac Next Season - Season Six. That reunion! Can we talk? What a season it has been for RHOP!!! Where to begin? After a brief chat with Wendy about her Nigerian background, many degrees, yes we all know she is super smart, family life with Eddie and the boys and what originally brought her to the DMV area, we get right into what ya all are to chat about. Piping’ hot tea from this past season of RHOP. Wendy discusses why she originally got involved with the show, potential reservations in joining, the realities of filming versus her perceived expeditions, and just what she knew and didn’t know joining an already established cast in the Fifth Season of a hit Bravo Housewives show. Of course, we also discuss the physical altercation between Candiace Dillard and Monique Samuels heard and seen around the world answering questions such as what was going through Wendy’s mind before, during and after, was she scared, could she believe what she was seeing, did she think this was “normal” Housewives’ behavior and did she think of resigning considering this was “not what she signed up for”. Wendy also dishes with us on her other cast mates Gizelle Bryant, Robyn Dixon, Ashley Darby, and last, but certainly not least, Karen Huger. Speaking of The Grand Dame, Wendy chats with us about Karen’s dislike of her and the real reasons why she thinks Karen does not like her - it is not what we see or hear at the reunion. Looking ahead to Season Six, Wendy and David discuss Monique and Candiace, both of whom have contracts in hand, and how they feel next season should, and most probably will, differ from this season past. (Monique Samuels has just announced that despite being offered a contract, she has resigned from RHOP after appearing on the show for four years). Finally, Wendy asks David, who she calls a "Housewives Aficionado”, for advice on Seasons to come to which, of course, he gives his no holds bar answers. Prior to culinary school, she worked as a designer for Ralph Lauren. In fact, it was a cake she made for Ralph (in the shape of a Bugatti, his favorite sports car) and the heaps of praise it received from fashion industry notables that inspired her to bring her design talents to the kitchen full-time. Her creations have appeared on the Today show (one of her cakes was selected as the winner of the “Today Throws a Wedding” series), Sex and the City (she made Charlotte and Harry’s wedding cake during Season Six), The View and Martha.  Elisa has also been featured on The View, and has appeared over ten times on the Food Network, including the “Extreme Cake Challenge” where she won the grand prize. Confetti Cakes has also been featured in InStyle, Martha Stewart Weddings, Marie Claire, Seventeen, Elle, Vogue, Modern Bride, New York, BRIDES, Elegant Bride, and The Knot. And in 2008 was selected as one of America’s Top Ten Pastry Chef’s in Pastry Art and Design. Elisa’s first book, The Confetti Cakes Cookbook: Spectacular Cookies, Cakes and Cupcakes from New York City’s Famed Bakery, was released in Spring 2007 and is in its sixth printing, while her second book entitled Confetti Cakes for Kids was released in the Fall of 2008. In 2010, Elisa stopped making cakes for clients to focus her business on online tutorials, teaching, product design and special consulting projects.  She’s busier than ever working with manufacturers, culinary schools, and television producers.  In addition to her work in the kitchen she is an active board member and supporter of Icing Smiles, an organization that provides critically ill children with custom cakes. LOS ANGELES – Actor Keith Burke delivers high drama and sizzling romance recurring as ‘Derrick David’ in Tyler Perry’s acclaimed original series, THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS, on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. Introduced at the beginning of Season Five, Derrick David (Burke) shows up to fix more than just the house Hanna Young (Crystal R. Fox) currently lives in. With each trying to get their life back on track after a few tragic turns, their chemistry can’t be denied and a budding romance develops. Fast forward end of Season Five and beginning Season Six. Derrick reveals the “Lion Tattoo” of which Hanna said she saw on the chest of the man who rapped her over 20 years ago. Now the questions have to be answered: Was Derrick the man who rapped her? Where do we go from here? Burke was excited at the opportunity to work with Tyler Perry and be part of this fan- favorite series, “The audition process was such a whirlwind. After the first read, I was called back the next day for a chemistry read with Crystal Fox. A few hours later, I was offered the role and told to be in Atlanta three days later. I must admit, I was a little nervous my first day on set but Crystal and Mr. Perry quickly put me at ease. After that, things went smoothly and it really felt like a supportive family environment. I’m beyond grateful.” Audiences will also recognize Burke from his numerous television appearances, as Jake O’Hare on the season three opener of AMC’s popular series, Preacher, opposite Ruth Negga (Loving) and Raelynn Bratten (The Ant Man & The Wasp). Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Burke first honed his acting skills at Philadelphia’s famed Freedom Theater. Shortly after, he made his way to Los Angeles, quickly landing roles in the films Players Club and Life, and scoring a cameo in the hit-series, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, alongside his childhood acquaintance Will Smith. Since then, Burke has appeared on a variety of television shows, including Southland, NCIS, Cold Case, and Criminal Minds to name a few. In addition, Burke has had a noteworthy career on stage. His hard work and disciplined love of plays has earned him numerous theater roles, including Don B. Welch’s “My Brother’s Keeper,” alongside Emmy Award Winning actress Loretta Divine --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/aaron-d-king/support

We discuss RHOBH Housewives past - Yolanda Hadid and Eden Sassoon and present such as Dorit Kemsley and Erika Jayne. We discuss the influx of actresses to the franchise - Garcelle Beauvais, Lisa Rinna and Denise Richards - and ultimately whether that is a good fit or not. Of course, we also discuss whether Denise really hooked up with Brandi Glanville and what Kathryn knows from being “on the scene” in Beverly Hills. This leads to a larger conversation of what should be included in a reality show, and what, if anything, should be off limits, the influence of producers behind the scenes and the magic of editing. Kathryn recounts her own time on RHOBH, the involvement of production, the edit she received, being thrown into day one middle of the season, and her colleagues she had to work with. She explains her past with Faye Resnick (Kyle Richards’ BFF), OJ Simpson, Robert Kardashian, that famous White Bronco and how that possibly affected the decision to cast her. Finally we discuss the involvement of Lisa’s Vanderpump and Rinna in helping “guide” storylines and just how did Season Six become all about Munchausen’s Syndrome. All this and we are only getting started. Tune in to this Part I sit down with the one and only Kathryn Edwards. @katedwards8@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeMerch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
