Andy chats with two guests in this episode of The Wedding Biz, both of whom have been featured on the podcast multiple times in the past. Laurie Arons is a planner and designer of Laurie Arons Special Events and has been featured in numerous magazine publications and has been listed in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Martha Stewart Weddings as one of the top worldwide planners. Her clientele is made up of trendsetters such as Sophia Coppola, Vanessa Getty, and Christy Turlington as well as prominent business moguls like Gary Friedman, Frank Caufield, and Eddie DeBartolo. Laurie has also created and runs a very successful wedding planner master class. Also joining Andy is Jose Villa, a fine art photographer who is considered by many to be the top event photographer in the world. He has been published in numerous magazines and was named one of the top wedding photographers by Martha Stewart Weddings, Harper's Bazaar, Style Me Pretty, and Vogue. He was also named one of the top ten photographers in the world by American Photo Magazine and was named one of the most influential photographers of the decade. Jose, in addition, runs workshops and authored the book Fine Art Wedding Photography. Laurie and Jose have been working together for nearly a decade, and they each elaborate upon what it's like working with the other. Laurie describes her business as live theatre only not with actors, a feeling which gives her butterflies because she puts a lot of thought into it. They also discuss at length how they address unexpected obstacles such as challenging weather, what's important to them as far as the guest experience is concerned, what they look for in a good venue, and what they are seeing happening currently in their business now that we are (hopefully) nearing the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Andy had such a fun time talking to Laurie and Jose again – especially at the same time – and encourages you to go back and listen to their previous episodes of the podcast by going to The Wedding Biz's website and typing in their names in the search bar. Be sure to also subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss an episode, and if you can think of at least three good friends who would benefit from listening to the podcast, share it with them! Andy would also appreciate a positive review wherever you listen to the podcast! Have you heard about the brand new show on The Wedding Biz Network, Stop and Smell the Roses with Preston Bailey? Listen as Preston shares the secrets, tools, and technologies behind his extraordinary ability to create a theatrical environment out of any space. Also, don't forget about Sean Low's podcast The Business of Being Creative, where Sean discusses the power of being niched, pricing strategies, metrics of success, and so much more. You can find both shows on The Wedding Biz Network. SUPPORTING THE WEDDING BIZ Become a patron and support Andy and the show! If you are so inspired, contribute! What can I say about the man who has done everything, except being a rock star and president? I don’t know where to start. I had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Kilpatrick recently. We spoke about working on Erasure together (I was an extra – can’t miss me, I’m in basic black !!!). He shared that while working on Erasure, he filmed another movie on the weekends. He has appeared on over 200 films and television shows as lead actor, producer, screen writer, director, and global entertainment teacher- from "Minority Report" with Tom Cruise to "Dark Angel" with Jessica Alba, from the largest production in Public Broadcasting history to the Los Angeles Theater Center with John Goodman and Academy Award winning British director Tony Richardson in Shakespeare's "Anthony and Cleopatra". He has appeared in over 75 hit TV shows such as "24", "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and all "CSI". In one 18-month period Patrick did five major studio films, two independents and 27 television guest star spots on 18 different shows.. Kilpatrick is president and CEO of Uncommon Dialogue Films, Inc. (UDF) (founded 2005) - a full service event/script, casting, film and media service company - idea inception to global return on investment realization. His producing/fund raising/film financing and production background has taken him from Fiji to the London Stock Exchange for the presentation of investment film slates. Until a military coup toppled the Fijian government he was briefly named founder of the University of Pacific Film and Theater program. Patrick has taught acting, auditioning, directing, producing and film distribution, Men in the Movies, Star Trek and Stage Combat at the University of Wisconsin (Whitewater) and Hampton Sydney College in Virginia and at the Texas Theater Center in Dallas/Fort Worth. Eight years ago, a man who was not Sandra A. Miller's husband invited her on an armchair treasure hunt—a search for $10,000 worth of gold coins buried in New York City, of all places. When she said she'd go, her world was upended. At the time Sandra was helping her ailing mother to die and her almost-teenage children to fly, but her biggest challenge was the confusion she felt about entering middle age and the shame of craving something more when she had so much already: a devoted husband, a decent career, and a community of close friends who knew how to rock a potluck. But isn't that how life is sometimes? We ache for something we can't even name, but we don't know what to do about it? Or we do, but we don't do it. In Sandra's case, that treasure hunt for gold coins stirred her longing heart into action. In a very real way, she'd spent her life hunting for buried treasure. As a child, she trained herself to find things: dropped hair clips, shiny bits of broken glass, discarded lighters. Looking to escape from her often-unhappy childhood in a Connecticut factory town, she found deeper meaning, and a good deal of hope, in these objects that she collected in a broken shoebox: my trove. As an adult facing the loss of her mother who was at once cold, difficult, and wildly funny, Sandra found herself, as she so often did as a little girl, pressed against a wall of her own longing. Her search for gold, which soon became an obsession, forced me to dredge up painful pieces of her past and confront the true source of her sorrow. Soon she was wandering down dark paths she otherwise would never have taken, hoping to discover what she'd been looking for all those years—and putting everything at risk for a treasure hunt. Valeria interviews Sandra A. Miller — the author of Trove: A Woman's Search for Truth and Buried Treasure,. Her essays and articles have appeared in over one hundred publications, including Modern Bride, The Boston Globe Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, and Glamour. One of her essays was turned into a short film called “Wait” starring Kerry Washington. Sandra lives in the Boston area, teaches writing at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She also leads spirit-filled writing workshops in person and online. To learn more about Sandra A. I start this episode by reading my essay, ‘What Marie Kondo Taught Me About Life’ … it’s an exploration of what I learned as I downsized, tossed and let go of reams of stuff. Not only were my drawers waaaay more organized and yes, tidy, as a result – my head and heart were lighter too. I felt more appreciative of what I’d kept, and more open to life as I removed the overlayer of stuff. I had the opportunity to chat with and coach the excellent Zibby Owens, a bright, sparkling guest who exudes passion for her subject – books. Zibby’s own podcast, Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, interviews authors about the inside scoop behind their books. And she, herself, is a fascinating guest. In our coaching, Zibby and I explored the whole idea of ‘over production’ – do we have to crawl towards the horizon on our knees to be enough to our families, our employers … ourselves? Then I got her to share some hot tips on books and making time read … even when you’re extremely busy. We're veering from our typical show structure and topics to delve into TRENDS today. And since we don't do this very often, we wanted to do it right - with an expert. Anne Chertoff is the Trends Expert (that's her job title!) at WeddingWire - the premier online resource for wedding planning tools, vendor library, guidance and inspiration. Anne has worked in the wedding industry for 20 years and we are loving picking her brain about what she is seeing right now in the wide world of weddings. This episode is all over the place -- in a good way! We talk ice cream, gobos, braids, greenery, and all about the tools that couples are using now to personalize their wedding and to give their guests a memorable, unique experience of celebration! Big Takeaways What makes Anne an expert? Her resume includes... - Modern Bride magazine - Martha Stewart Weddings - Various wedding tv shows, websites and partnerships worldwide! - She covered the royal wedding for various outlets! - Now, she's at WeddingWire as a Trends Expert and Spokesperson. And she's speaking to us! Sidenote - in interviewing Anne, we stumbled upon some really amazing career advice. Basically, do what you love! Anne loved weddings and in a series of baby steps and smart moves (unpaid internship included), Anne crafted her passion for weddings into a career. She talks about trying different things and breaking rules. We agree that life would be awesome if everyone loved their job. What's up with WeddingWire, anyway? If WW had been around when Anne was planning her own wedding many years ago, she would have utilized the vendor lists on WW, first and foremost. WW sifts the vendor/venue search for you so you have a place to start. Descriptions, contact info, reviews, photos...it's all there for you in one place and you can narrow your search depending on your location and budget. Brilliant! The budget tool and the social apps also make things easy and fun...snapchat filters, hashtag generator...the practical and the playful - WeddingWire has it all. Let's talk about tech, baby! - An app for your guests - WedSocial . It's an app that you create and your guests can find all the info about your wedding, it is your wedding website, as an app. It's also a really cool way for everyone to share photos of the wedding, all in one place. - WeddingWire Snapchat filters. Creating a customized filter or border with the date...it's like having a portable photobooth all night long! - Hashtags - you come up with a fun hashtag, and then on Instagram and Facebook, all your guests can tag photos. Make a photo album from the hash-tagged photos! There's even a WeddingWire Hashtag Generator - Audio Visual is advancing like crazy. Lighting is key. Ask about gobos and image mapping on the walls...innovative and cool ways to customize an otherwise blank space Wedding Fashion - Trends are shifting from show-y, sexy wedding dresses, to more modest, traditional dresses...slowly but surely. Anne loves the high necks and long sleeves right now. Bows on dresses are also trendy right now - done in a modern way. - For men, we're seeing more grooms making fashion statements. Feather bow ties? Awesome! Men are expressing themselves more than ever - accessories, ties, changing suit jackets, slim cut suits. It's all good, gentlemen. What about same-sex weddings? The key is coordination - the style and formality need to coordinate. Not matchy-matchy. You and your partner need to be on the same ‘level' and if you're shopping for your wedding day outfits separately, consider bringing a friend to each shopping trip so you know you are going in the right direction. The most important thing is that your looks compliment each other. The biggest ‘surprise' player in weddings this year? Ice Cream has made a big impression this year and it's still going strong. - Old fashioned ice cream trucks - Sundae bars - Ice cream as performance (have you seen the liquid nitrogen ice cream makers? So cool.) - Fancy, playful ice cream as the dessert of a 5 course meal - Ice cream cake. It comes in cool colors, it's customizable, it's photogenic. Ice cream...who knew? Elements that are here to stay - Wedding Cakes are timeless. The cake cutting photo is iconic. Do it. You won't regret it! - Bridal bouquets are still huge - they complete the look for a bride. We aren't seeing brides toss the bouquet as often, but carrying a bouquet is here to stay. - The big ‘send off' is evolving and we all still love it. - Furniture and specialty rentals are huge right now and don't seem to be going anywhere. Links we referenced WeddingWire WedSocial Vow to Be Chic Menguin The Black Tux Black by Vera Wang Brackish Bow Ties Garter Girl Quotes “You are wedding-SICK, lady!” - Michelle, to Anne “Having so much at your fingertips makes it so much easier...it's all at one place, it's super easy to use and it's free.” - Anne, on the virtues of WeddingWire “The most important thing is for a couple to figure out early on what is important to them. Is it the fashion, is it the food...allocate the money to those areas. And you can find inexpensive ways to do the other things.” - Anne, advice for couples with a tighter budget “The time is now for men to own their wedding looks.” - Christy, who wants to support this movement “For flowers, we are seeing a lot of lush centerpieces, and a lot of greenery in centerpieces, which can offset some floral costs.” - Anne on flower trends “We went from cakes to cupcakes to dessert buffets to candy to donuts...now popsicles are huge.” - Anne, on wedding dessert evolution NOW HEAR THIS! We will be recording again with Anne and this time, she will be answering YOUR QUESTIONS! Ask her anything related to wedding trends. Whether it's running an idea by her, asking her advice or asking her for some suggestions for your wedding Deadline to send us your questions is August 17th, 2017 3 ways to send us your questions: 1) Twitter @TBWPPodcast 2) Facebook 3) Email: thebigweddingplanningpodcast@gmail.com Get In Touch Let us know if you have any questions you need answered on the show or if you want to share your own wedding planning experiences! "Punch fear in the face. Fear is the only thing that keeps people from trying. If you don't try, you'll never know." "Love doesn't pay the bills." About: Ceci Johnson- Founder of Ceci New York Ceci Johnson’s story started with an invitation she created for a coworker’s wedding combined with the realization that a truly customized graphic design experience in wedding invitations was not available at that time. Armed with a clear desire to create the best invitations in the world, she started her business out of a shared office space NYC. Ten years later, her love of paper, design and innovation still drives her to create beautiful and completely original pieces every day. Ceci was named “Woman to Watch” by Tory Burch, “Invitation Innovator” by WeTV and garnered Modern Bride magazine’s trendsetter award and New York magazine’s prestigious Expert Stationer award. Her designs and expertise have appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, InStyle, W Magazine, Town & Country and on the Today Show, VH1 and Gossip Girl among many others. Notable clients include the President of the United States, International Royalty, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Sarah Jessica Parker, Katherine Heigl, Dylan Lauren, Rosie O’Donnell, the Empire State Building, Cole Haan, Hugo Boss and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Overview: Ceci is a graphic designer that was born with the entrepreneurial gene. After seeing the need for custom wedding invitations 16 years ago, Ceci paved the way and eventually started Ceci New York- a luxury invitation and corporate design company. During this interview, Ceci shares what it took for her to start her own company, and also offers great advice on how to stand behind your brand with clients. Click to Tweet: Ep 193: Highlights: Background: Ceci obtained a degree in graphic design and got her first job working as a the designer for the bridal registry for large department stores. She then had a co-worker ask her to design a wedding invitation for her, which ignited the spark. From there she moved to New York City and joined the corporate world doing web design, but missed paper design. She went to the CEO of the corporation she was working for and asked if she'd let her design her wedding invitations. It was all downhill from that point on, and before Ceci knew it, she was meeting with referral after referral. Six months into launching her website, Ceci received the trendsetter award from Modern Bride Magazine. Ceci spent a lot of time working long days to get her name out there, she knocked on a lot of doors in her industry to showcase her portfolio, and was constantly revamping her site. What is Ceci New York: Ceci launched Ceci New York in 2004 without any investors and completely on her own. It's a luxury brand that designs invitations for any event from weddings to non-profit organizations. (From website)- "Our design atelier is driven by a groundbreaking concept that unites the custom and service of couture with the tactile elements of stationery and branding, creating a new niche in the design industry for visual styling. We strive to create a superior experience for each client, offering an incomparable range of couture services and outstanding ready-to-order products that boast flawless craftsmanship and the utmost attention to detail. From one-of-a-kind bespoke designs to original ready-to-order that discreetly bears Ceci’s signature, our creations possess a coveted commissioned quality that lends to the magic we invent. Ceci’s signature is the hallmark of authenticity and never-before-seen originality, ensuring that you receive a true work of art." About Ceci New York: The company currently has 20 employees that all work at the main showroom in New York City. Ceci says if you want to grow your company, you need employees. And with that, you have to learn how to let go of having control over everything to be successful. However, she is a very hands-on CEO that enjoys being a part of the design process and leading the way with her vision of the company. Their main target audience started out as brides and weddings in general, but now they help anyone who is looking to elevate their events through design. Goal: Eventually, Ceci would love to be a part of different markets and use her designs for bedding, phone cases, jewelry, etc. Work-Life Balance: Ceci is the proud mother of a little boy and feels that having him in her life has really helped her prioritize her time at work. She strives to stay focused and be effective while working so that she can spend the time she'd like with her son. Challenges: Ceci shares that it can be difficult to deal with certain clients and stick up for what you know needs to be done in order to accomplish their project. There have also been times when Ceci has been afraid to tell her clients what the prices were for their order. However, she realized that when she confidently explained to her clients the extent of work that goes into their project, they appreciate her time and effort. Advice for Entrepreneurs: When reaching out to others, show them how invested you are in their company and how you can solve potential problems. When creating a sales plan, look at how much you want to make on an annual basis and break it down by month, then by project or amount. It's important to educate your audience and pave the way for what you're offering. Lastly, stand behind your work.
