Honoring Black Mothers: A Special Mother's Day Episode with Anna Malaika Tubbs, Author of The Three Mothers

Welcome to Season Six of the Mother’s Quest Podcast and this special Mother’s Day episode, which shines a light on the untold stories and far-reaching impact of mothers and in particular Black mothers. For this episode, I had the honor of talking with Anna Malaika Tubbs, the brilliant biographer of the groundbreaking book The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation. In addition to being a mother to a 1 year old boy with another child on the way, Anna is an author, advocate, educator, scholar and Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. Growing up abroad and influenced by her exposure to all kinds of cultures and beliefs, and by her own mother’s work advocating internationally for women’s and children’s rights, Anna uses an intersectional lens to advocate for women of color and to educate others. During her time as an undergraduate student at Stanford University, Anna took from what she’d seen in her parents’ work and began honing her own identity as an activist. As the First Partner of Stockton, CA, she co-authored the first-ever “Report on the Status of Women in Stockton” to guide future policy decisions with the experiences of diverse women in mind. She’s published articles featured in the Huffington Post, For Harriet, Darling Magazine and Blavity, on issues ranging from mass incarceration to the forced sterilization of Black women, as well as the importance of feminism, intersectionality, and inclusivity. Throughout all her work and writing, she draws on her personal experience and extensive research to examine and make relevant gender and race issues in the US, especially the pervasive erasure of Black women. In this incredible debut book, The Three Mothers, Anna celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America’s most pivotal civil rights heroes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. Alberta King, Louise Little and Berdis Baldwin were all born at the beginning of the 20th century, all were forced to contend with the prejudices of Jim Crow as Black women, all forged their own unique paths, using their beliefs and talents to shape not only their children but those around them, and all three had to bury their children, two of them after losing their sons to gun violence. In these mothers and their stories, amidst the pain and grief, there also existed vibrancy, love and conviction. One of my biggest takeaways from my conversation with Anna is the importance of acknowledging the continued injustices that Black women endure today and that although Black women continue to experience tremendous grief, they also experience joy and they are not “a conquered victim," but are living through life as whole human beings. My Mother’s Day wish is that you will find time and space to slow down and truly listen to Anna’s insights about the mothers whose stories she so beautifully tells, that you will get and read her book The Three Mothers, and that you’ll join me in saying “yes” to Anna’s challenge. She asks that all of us advance our understanding of different forms of motherhood. Picking up books she says, especially those that focus on Black mothers and Black motherhood, can bring healing for everybody.   Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. This Episode is Dedicated by: Sybrina Fulton After the death of her beloved son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in February 2012, Sybrina Fulton was charged with a new mission. A desire to transform family tragedy into social change allowed her to establish the Trayvon Martin Foundation in March 2012. As Fulton traverses the globe, she passionately embarks on a journey designed to bring awareness to senseless gun violence and serves as an advocate to families, the catalyst for her dream project, the “Circle of Mothers.” Winning the national support of president-elect Hillary Clinton, Fulton rallied to the forefront in 2016 at the Democratic National Convention with a cadre of African American trailblazing women known as “Mothers of the Movement.” The women, connected by tragedy, are the inspiration behind  “Black Lives Matter.” In 2017, Fulton co-authored her first book, Rest in Power, The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, a memoir recounting the death of her son, and the subject of a six-part docuseries, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, produced by hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter for Paramount Network and BET (July 2018). Bestowed with many distinguished awards, Sybrina Fulton has represented the United States at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss racial discrimination; the National Urban League, Black Lives Matter, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, The Triumph Awards (2016), Essence Festival & Conference (2017, 2018), and was selected as the White House’s guest of honor for the unveiling of former President Barak Obama’s initiative, “My Brother’s Keeper.” Fulton is also one of the 2018 recipients of VH1’s Trailblazer Honor Award. A Miami native and graduate of Florida Memorial University, Sybrina Fulton, along with her son, Jahvaris, are on a mission to build better, safer communities. She is a proud member of the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Metropolitan Dade County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. She created the Circle of Mothers to bring together mothers who have lost children or family members to senseless gun violence for the purpose of healing, empowerment, and fellowship towards the larger aim of community building.    Connect with Sybrina: Facebook  Twitter  Instagram Trayvon Martin Foundation   Give a Mother’s Day Gift: Help mothers heal from the loss of a loved one by supporting and donating to the Circle of Mothers, Sybrina’s weekend retreat for mothers who have lost a child to gun violence. You can support the cause here. Special thanks to Jill Daniel of Happy Women Dinners for introducing us to Anna and her work!    In This Episode We Talk About: Anna's commitment to fighting the erasure of Black women's stories. What inspired Anna to focus her first book on the mothers of sons of the Civil Rights Movement. How painful moments like George Floyd's murder, and joyful moments like Stacy Abram's organizing in Georgia, had Anna editing and adding more relevance right up until the book was published. Anna’s decision to focus on MLK Jr., Malcolm X and James Baldwin as the three famous sons, and their mothers, Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin whose stories she would tell. The lessons revealed in Anna's book that all mothers can learn from across the E.P.I.C. guideposts. The importance of acknowledging that Black women are "not a conquered victim" but living through life as a whole human being. Anna's challenge for all mothers listening to expand our awareness through reading and her hope that this book will be seen as a celebration of Black womanhood.   This Episode's Challenge: Anna invites us to think about what we can all read to advance our understanding of different forms of motherhood. Picking up books that focus on Black mothers and Black motherhood can bring healing for everybody. The more we are informed, the more conscious we become.  Anna’s next recommendation after finishing her book: The Power of Purpose by Alicia Garza which begins with a powerful description of the impact of Alicia’s mother on her.    Learn More More About Anna: Anna Malaika Tubbs is an Author, advocate, educator, and a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. There is no stiffer upper lip in Britain than that of Muriel, the stoic wealthy widow whose son takes advantage of her naivety in one of Alan Bennett's famous Talking Heads monologues, "Soldiering On". She's played by English actress Harriet Walter in a recently filmed series that offer a new generation of actors a chance to perform the heartbreaking monologues, more than 30 years after the original series was broadcast on BBC One. The new cast have not only had to stamp their own mark on the roles, but also film during Covid-19 lockdown. For Harriet this meant Zoom rehearsals with the director before filming started with all the necessary social distancing. Harriet Walter's more a very familiar face, rather than a household name. Among her hundreds of TV roles, she played Clementine Churchill in The Crown, and Dasha the assassin trainer in Killing Eve. She's also been in many Shakespearean productions for the stage, including several with all-female casts. Lynn Freeman called Harriet during a break in filming a major feature in Britain. The 2020 series of Talking Heads by Alan Bennett is screening on Sky's Arts Channel. You can watch the Shakespearian productions that are now briefly available on line here...

She's sent the key to a house that holds a forgotten world within. We talk about the first idea for the story, and how it developed from many ideas Harriet had for another story that never quite made it.We also chat about how she knows what her role is as a commercial novelist, how that affects her writing and storytelling, and why for her editing is the most important part of the whole process - and that, in fact, many other authors could learn to tidy up their work a bit more! There's also chat about her brand new novel in process, it's not even got a proper title yet, but we try and uncover what about it is making her tick right now.For audiobooks that help independent booksellers (and not the big conglomerates) head here - www.libro.fm and use the code ROUTINE, for a sweet 3 for 1 offer. For Harriet's book that helps US (but unfortunately use the big conglomerates) head here - https://amzn.to/2NKEsI0AND, please do support the show over at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Happy Thursday folks! I’ve got a special Unlocked Episode today. This year I want to do a lot more in using my platform to have tough conversations and continue to make positive social change. With the recent win of Green Book for Best Picture, I think there was an audible moan heard around the world when it was announced. Certainly social media blew up in discussing either disappointment or happiness for the films win. But with some of the discussion being yelling and demeaning back and forths on social media, I wanted to have a calm convo on the subject. So today I’m joined by film critic and WTOP Entertainment Editor Jason Fraley to discuss: What’s Wrong With Liking Green Book?  I’m grateful for Jason joining me to have the discussion as this is a sensitive subject and it’s not always easy to dive into race relations and how we interact with one another. It’s no secret that mothers are our first teachers and our first examples and experiences of unconditional love. Katara Washington Patton, author of "Successful Moms of the Bible," is here to share how you don’t need to master the latest parenting trends because the best parenting advice has already been written; is in the "Bible!" Whether you’re a first-time mother with a newborn; have school-aged children or teens; are an emptynester, or are a mother figure, the heartwarming and hilarious “Success Mothers of the Bible” is for you! Katara has written and edited Christian books for children, teens, and adults and created supplemental materials for books by T.D. Jakes, Beth Moore and Joyce Meyer. She served as general editor and writer of "Aspire: The New Women of Color Study Bible." She holds a M.Div. from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Growing up Linda’s mother would often say to her, “Beauty is as beauty does and you’ve got a long way to go.” In her book, Cordelia and Me: The Pains, Challenges, and Journey of Becoming Me, Jones explores the revelation of self-discovery, self-love, and the love of others in spite of childhood wounds and abuse. By definition, an “icon” is usually a symbol or an image that stands for or represents something other than itself. As an artist, SHA'CONDRIA "iCON" SIBLEY has made a choice to represent the loving-kindness, creativity, and power of God through her gifts and talents. iCon is a nationally-acclaimed championship poet/spoken word artist/actress/teaching artist. As a founding member Team SNO (Slam New Orleans), she has helped to lead the team where few other slam teams have gone before, winning multiple regional and national titles, solidifying the team as a “dynasty” in the world of slam poetry. A lover of the stage, iCon has also been featured in several stage productions such as the musical, ‘Badu-izms’, a production of Eve Ensler’s ‘A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer’, ‘Housewarming’, and ‘Waiting to Be Invited’. She was featured in the EngageNOLA/Humid Being’s “If I Were Mayor” web commercial for the 2010 New Orleans mayoral race. She was a featured poet on the 3rd season of TV One's NAACP award-winning national hit TV show, ‘Verses and Flow’ engineered by Lexus, which aired in October 2013. In celebration of her love of the visual arts and jewelry, she and fellow artist Asia Rainey launched a line of highly sought after hand-painted, hand-crafted earrings called Dada Designs. Along with Rainey, iCon also filmed the video, ‘Ten Paces’ (2010), which served as the soundtrack to The Red Hand Campaign, started by the two in honor of slain toddler Jeremy Galmon to hold community members responsible for speaking up against violence. The pair also co-founded the Write!NOLA Festival (2012-13) to reunite and revitalize the New Orleans (residential and displaced) poetry community. In 2014, iCon partnered with the Alexandria Museum of Art in her hometown to become the host and organizer of the ‘Rhythm & Rhymes Spoken Word Performing Arts Series’, a quarterly showcase at the museum which has gained statewide popularity. Her work has been featured on many national and international outlets such as Upworthy, Huffington Post, For Harriet, Fusion, Marie Claire, and BET.com, especially after her poem “To All the Little Black Girls With Big Names” went viral. As a result, she also founded The Little Girls Big Names Project, which aims to encourage women and girls with unique names as well as combat name discrimination and stigma surrounding unorthodox names. Over the years, she has shared stages with the likes of Sunni Patterson, Taalam Acey, Abiodun Oyewole (The Last Poets), jessica care moore, Amanda Diva, The Tony Rich Project, and Dead Prez. She can be found all over the country performing on numerous stages and teaching workshops from colleges and universities, churches, schools, community centers, and detention centers to corner cyphers and living rooms. In addition to her many accomplishments, iCon also works teaching poetry to inmates at a federal correctional facility. Focused on not falling for anything, iCon stands for something. And that something is art. That something is God. That something is Love.
