Acknowledgement of Country//Headlines//We replay a conversation between from Danielle & Shev about late diagnosis, privilege, getting services from an inadequate system, stigma and disability inclusion in activist spaces, originally broadcast for as part of 3CR's Disability Day special broadcast on the 3rd of December, 2025. This year's theme, "Right Relations & Innovations" was about disabled people's visions of a safe future for everyone, and the relationships and innovations that can get us there.//The end of year holiday period can be hard for queer people for so many different reasons. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, it's a time that can be really isolating due to friends and community going away on holiday, with less access to healthcare over public holidays. There are increased financial pressures and constant reminders of idealised family relationships. To learn more about supporting yourself and others during this time, today we are joined by Bec Smith from QLife - a peer support service run by community for community. Bec has spent the better part of the past decade working and volunteering in the digital mental health sector, and currently serves at LGBTIQ+ Health Australia as the Associate Director for QLife, which runs in partnership with Twenty10 (NSW), Switchboard (Vic), Living Proud (WA), and Diverse Voices (Qld). BAN, a group of professionals from the built environment industry, argue that in addition to a lack of appropriate consideration of the plans' impact on residents, the government is still failing to provide a reasonable justification for wholesale demolition and redevelopment of the towers despite the significant social, environmental and economic costs. You can read and sign BAN's open letter here.//Ilo Diaz from the Centre Against Racial Profiling joins us to unpack the function, declaration and impact of ‘designated areas' in Victoria. Ilo has been tracking the announcement of designated areas around Victoria over the past few years, looking at the frequency and duration of these zones where police are additionally empowered to do things like search people without a warrant, move them along, and remove face coverings. Last week, Human Rights Law Centre filed a challenge in federal court against the Victorian Assistant Police Commissioner's recent declaration of the entire Melbourne CBD and surrounds as a designated area for 6 months, starting from 30 November 2025. Head to the Federation of Community Legal Centre's website to find your local community legal centre for support if you have had contact with the police.//Lana Laham, disability support worker & community organiser, joins us to discuss Fun Run 4 Mutual Aid, a community-powered event bringing people together to move, connect, and raise funds for life saving mutual aid to Gazan, Sudanese & First Nations people. The main Fun Run event will take place on Sunday, February 1st 2026, 9 AM, at Footscray Park along the fully paved Maribyrnong River Trail. But you can run or walk, on the day or at a time that suits you! There are so many ways to get involved. Are you in a confusing relationship? This type of relationship most often occurs within families. It could be with your husband, mother, father, sister, in-laws, or even with your extended family. Is there someone who intentionally or unintentionally gaslights you or sends you mixed messages, causing you to doubt your self-worth, your values or core beliefs? Maybe you have a parent who consistently invalidates your feelings? Or perhaps you have a husband who doesn't move toward your bid to connect? Their behavior isn't outwardly "out to get you," but it makes you start to question yourself, your feelings, and how you experience the world. Their behavior causes you to doubt yourself, and think that maybe there is something wrong with you. It might even be making you feel guilty for something that is not your fault. If you are in a confusing relationship, you might be managing other people's behavior in order to protect yourself...and you are also managing your own reactions so as not to agitate other people's emotions. This can be exhausting! Also, did you know that people can exhibit self-centered narcissistic behavior without actually having a narcissistic disorder? In this truly insightful conversation with Shev Simon, an IFS (Internal Family Systems Practitioner), she sheds lights on confusing relationships so that women make sense of their experiences and show up in life with more calm and ease. For more information and to schedule a chat with Shev, you can reach her here:Website: shevsimoncoaching.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/shev.simon.9Vera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach. The conference is co-hosted by Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI) and the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives as the organizations celebrate their 10th and 20th anniversaries respectively. The conference cultivates a network of interconnected and interdependent worker owners, business developers, policymakers, funders, and labor organizers, all driven toward a common goal of improving the lives of workers and their families. WCC24 will foster relationships and strategies within the worker co-op community and knit us closer to other labor movements.

This week, Marisa presents Doin' Time from Dja Dja Wurrung country. First up on the show, she interviews Chris Breen from the Refugee Action Collective, about the good, the bad and the ugly of the new Labor Government's policies regarding refugees and asylum seekers -- despite many hard-fought wins by on-the-ground refugee activism, and Labor's promise to provide permanent visas to those on temporary and SHEV visas, there is still a long way to go: Labor's deterrent approach is currently neglecting the >10,000 people on bridging visas, Medevac refugees, children of families on Nauru, the 9,700 refugees already rejected by the fast-track system (and were not even allowed an interview), the number of people remaining in offshore detention, and those in Indonesia. He discusses the contradictory attitude of this government who, on the same day of announcing the Murugappan family's return to Biloela in central QLD, turned their first boat back to Sri Lanka. You can tell the Albanese government to do more by attending the rally ahead of world refugee day: 1pm June 18th, State Library of Victoria. Later, Marisa speaks with Josephine Langbien, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, about their recent media release: "[We have] welcomed the appointment of Claire O'Neill as the Minister of Home Affairs and Andrew Giles as the Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs and have called on them to take action to end a decade of cruelty against refugees and people seeking safety". She discusses the years of cruelty, mistreatment and neglect that has been an intentional policy against people seeking safety and protection, and the opportunity this cabinet change offers to bring fairness and dignity to our refugee policy. Josephine details the five specific steps the HRLC is hopeful the new government can address as priority areas for change: Ending the use of temporary protectionShutting down offshore detentionAddressing the crisis in immigration detention within AustraliaBringing families back togetherRestoring our humanitarian resettlement program Lastly, Marisa invites Nerita Waight, proud Yorta Yorta woman and CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, on the program. Nerita has been with VALS for almost a decade and has a vast amount of experience as both a lawyer and a social justice advocate. She discusses the case challenging aged pension discrimination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as it heads to Full Federal Court later this year. She highlights the need for fair and equal access to benefits for Aboriginal people who commonly do not reach pension age by virtue of lower life expectancy. Until this life expectancy gap is properly addressed, Aboriginal people have the right to retire with dignity; she notes that this change would also improve economic participation, financial security and the overall wellbeing of people who can no longer work. Marisa ends the program by reading a media release entitled Routine strip searching of children in Tasmanian jails to end.Tune in next week for our Radiothon special program, and please donate if you can. We all grow and develop at different paces and rates, some of us are slow, steady and consistent, others grow in sharp bursts and spikes. And some of us resist growth and change all together. In nature, it's said that if the plant isn't growing, it's dying. But each plant also has their own unique rhythm for growth. We know the same to be true for relationships, they need to continually develop to last forever. But how do we navigate the stages of a relationship when one person is growing and blooming and the other is hibernating for winter?Siobhan & Declan have been together for over a decade, Declan is a happiness researcher, author, keynote speaker and the founder of BU Happiness College. Siobhan (aka Shev) is a dog loving, cake-baking, care-giving lover of life. Together they've created a beautiful, loving and caring relationship that is intentional and designed. They've worked both on themselves and their relationship and in this episode they share their story and some of the lessons learned along the way. Slice me off a big piece of that silly pie because VERSUS is back and it's just as dumb as the last time, if not dumber! How do we cram so much dumb into such short, perfectly portioned episodes? Frankly, we have no idea! It's just as alarming to us!! :(This time around, we're sending one up for the kids, delving into the dark world of celebrity deaths, and the boys get BIBLICAL (the Old Testament, specifically).VERSUS: Now with Even More Dumb!™
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 8, 2022 is: disheveled dih-SHEV-uld adjective Disheveled means "marked by disorder or disarray." // His hair disheveled and his clothes wrinkled, the late student had clearly overslept. See the entry > Examples: "I'm a realist. … I know what I see. And what I see is a team that's somewhat disheveled. And that's on me. Somehow, … I do not have the ability at this point in time to affect my players to make sure that we're in a better place mentally and physically, to play the kind of basketball we need to play." — Geno Auriemma, quoted in ESPN, 9 Dec. 2021 Did you know? Disheveled comes from Middle English discheveled, meaning "bareheaded" or "with disordered hair." That word is partially based on Anglo-French deschevelé, a combination of the prefix des- ("dis-") and chevoil ("hair"). In English, disheveled describes things other than hair that have a messy or untidy appearance.

Shevi found herself on a rookie collegiate team that saved her from dropping out of school & allowed her to become familiar with her own identity. Shev shares with Sus what a life changing experience it was for her when she realized the rugby team could be her family away from home. She was introduced to cultures outside of the one she grew up in & formed important friendships along the way. She began to see exercise in a different light. Rugby was also her first introduction to the LGBTQIA+ community & was a safe space for her to own being gay. Don't miss the story of an ass out try for the closer!

"Even after Nov. 3rd, we have to make sure that civic engagement is at the top of our list" - Shev JonesWelcome to Local Selection!Follow us!Instagram: @LocalSelectionPodcastTwitter: @LocalSelectionShevrin Jones, candidate for Florida state senate in district 35Twitter: @ShevrinJonesInstagram: @shevrinjones(editor's note: Shev was a candidate for Florida State Senator at the time of this interview and has since been ELECTED!!!)Why should I care about local representation? Don't we have bigger fish to fry?The media focuses its attention - and therefore our attention - on a few national level offices like President and some Senate offices.BUT!Life happens at the local level! And the decisions made at the city, county, and state level have an ENORMOUS impact on our actual lives. It's not just tax codes and jaywalking ordinances (not that those aren't exciting).Housing discrimination gets encoded in city council meetings, and white supremacy is enforced by municipal police departments or county sheriffs.By the same token, those laws, those rules, and those budgets can be unwritten and renegotiated in those same offices. And the people who run for these offices are accessible! They live in your town, they get coffee from your favorite coffee spot. Sometimes they even check their own email! And there is no shortage of awesome, inspiring people who are stepping up to run and occupy these offices, and to use their power to tear down oppressive structures and help make their communities more just, more equitable, and more compassionate. We will never achieve justice at the national level until we can practice it at the local level. We will never achieve equity at the national level until we can practice it at the local level. What we have to work on is our imagination. We need to practice imagining what that society might look like if we practiced our values instead of believing them to be out of reach. And we need role models of inspiration to activate our imaginations. This podcast is on a quest to introduce you to these role models. They exist, right now, all over the country. They are regular people, but they are willing to exercise their imaginations and then do the work to make it real. Before Shev joins the episode I spend a little time on a brief history of Florida's state level politics. State level politics are local - until they are national.Florida's state level politics are everybody's issue.Enter Shev Jones.Shev talks about what it means to be the first openly gay African-American member of the Florida state legislature - and what it doesn't mean.He talks about what it is to be that person - and walk into local meetings of Florida Republicans. Because after all he represents them, too.He talks about leading Bill Writing Workshops for his constituents, including one law he got passed that started with his constituents in one of the workshops. He shares his workout tips (because I asked him - this guy has arms for days! Sorry not sorry)And some tips for how to stay sane and stay grounded while s

Mastery of recording is what fuels Here We Izzz Entertainment's Craig Blackwell and Shelvon Turner AKA Craig and Shev. The duo is continuing on their torrid pace of releases following their EP “Power Moves”, with their new single, “Steady Hating” Ft. Cassidy and T-Rell. Hailing from Stubenville, Ohio, Craig and Shev employed Cassidy and T-Rell to create this smooth anthem but did not omit the crafty word-play to stay true to their love of classic hip hop. Their grind and work ethic is what separates them from other rappers in the game. They traveled to New York City to provide the backdrop for the video. Craig and Shev released Power Moves which, gained attention from reputable websites and blogs after the release of their video “I Don't Know About That”. Appearing on Worldstar, Thisis50 and more, led them to doing a Southern College Tour with Yo-Gotti. Craig and Shev brings that Midwest swing with true to form lyrics to creating a much needed refreshing sound for music lovers.
