I've made a number of low budget movies in my life, about a half dozen of them and the driving force behind them has almost always been, let's get together with some friends and make a movie. I got the sense that that was kind of part of the DNA of Billy Topit. Is that right?Lance: Well, yes, I just have to correct you on one thing: Billy Topit was not a low budget movie. It was a nobudget movie. We literally just decided, you know what, I'm not going to spend any money. Everyone volunteered. So, if it ever makes any money, I'll go back and pay the actors.John: Well, okay. But as someone who has done the same thing, I've done that a half dozen times with the no money. The results you got, given the no money status, were great. Your sound is exceptional. One of the things that's normally a big sign that it's a low budget movie is the sound is not good. It's a hard thing to get right and when you do get it right, it makes it sound like a big budget movie. The cinematography is terrific, the editing is fantastic. I don't know if you bought the music, or if someone did the music, but whatever it was it fit perfectly, and it just sailed along. So, for a movie that had no budget, you did an exceptional job of making a real movie.Lance: Oh, thank you. You're right, the sound is the one thing you really don't want to skimp on, because that's something you really can't fix in post a lot of the times. So, we did try to pay attention to the sound recording. As far as the music goes, some of the music was from my show that I already own. Some of the performance pieces, some of the music we use just for the movie, was rights free music that that I got from a company called Digital juice. They have all different sorts of music and it's searchable. So, you can find you know, rock and roll hard driving music, you can find, you know, instrumentals, you really have everything. Then there was a couple of pieces that a friend of mine, who's a musician wrote and recorded for me. And one of the pieces in the film, my lead actress, Joelle Rigetti, she had actually recorded an album a couple of years ago and she gave me the album during the production. She said, “Hey, anything on here you want you're welcome to use.” And I listened to it and there was one track, I went, this is perfect for this one scene I have. It's that it's the scene where the whole cast is waking up on the second day, brushing their teeth and getting ready to go out. That's actually the lead actress singing.John: The stuff you picked all really meshed well together.Lance: Oh, thank you. It was during the post-production process when it really struck me—as we were editing and doing that—how much the music adds to a production, not just a live show. I already knew that for a live show. But as I was making the film, it really just struck me again, you know, wow, music really does add a whole new dimension to the movie or live show.John: Yeah. So, where did the idea for the movie come from?Lance: Well, I'll tell you exactly where it came from. When I was a kid, there was a television series on TV called The Magician starring Bill Bixby. It only lasted one season, because the network got a new president that came in and he just, you know, cancelled all his predecessors' shows. But it actually did good in the ratings. But it only lasted 22 episodes. The magic consultant on The Magician was Mark Wilson and so when I moved out west, I met Mark Wilson, and became friends with him. Then when I was shooting Knightrider, guess who they hired to provide all of the large illusions and props for the episode? Mark Wilson. He was sort of the magic advisor on that television show. So, Mark, and I got to hang out for seven days on the set as we were shooting. He's actually in the episode. You can see shots of him. He's sitting in the audience during one of the opening performances. In fact, I get him up on stage at one point as a volunteer. So, anyway, one day after filming, Mark and I are going out to dinner and we're in his car and we're driving along. And he says to me, “Lance, how do you like doing this work?” And I said, “What do you mean, Mark? You mean like this episode?” He says, “Yeah, how do you like, you know, acting on this, this TV show?” And I said, “I'm having the time of my life. I get to do magic. I get to act. I get to work with a stuntman, and this is great.” And he says, “Well, you're doing a good job and you ought to think about doing more of this.” And I said, “More of this, so what do you mean?” He says, “You ought to start a notebook, start keeping some ideas of how you could incorporate your magic into a TV series or movie, you know, like with the Bill Bixby series.” And I thought, Oh, that's a good idea. So, I did, I started writing, every time I had an idea about how to use magic within the context of the drama series, or, you know, a story, I would write it down. So, after a few years, I had all these sort of clever things that I came up with, to use magic and propelling the story forward, or to get out of this sticky situation or whatever. And every few years, I've pulled that out, and I'd go, “You know, I'm going to try and go pitch this,” and I would go to Los Angeles and set up some meetings. And I was trying to pitch to do a series every few years and we got close a couple of times, but we never were able to sell it. But the area I was working in was so similar to things that would pop up on my TV screen later. I kept thinking, “Man, I've got something here, I just need to, like any kind of magic trick, you know, I get it in my head and it's frustrating, I just I gotta get it out, I got to put it on the stage because it's like in my brain is like scratching the inside of my skull and it's really annoying.” By that time, the technology had progressed to the point where we had these high-definition cameras that weren't, you know, astronomically expensive. And we had editing software so that somebody on their laptop could put out a professional looking product. So, I finally just said, hey, you know what, I'm gonna do this. And I called my buddy, Michael Goudeau and he came over and we fleshed out the story. And then we wrote the screenplay within, like two or three months. And then we eventually just started casting it and shot it. So, it all goes back to Bill Bixby and The Magician from 1973. John: Well, most things do. Most things do go back that. Were you always planning on directing?Lance: You know, directing and acting at the same time is really difficult. But I had been doing it all my life, you know, with my live show. And we started in on this thing and then at some point, I heard an interview with Barbra Streisand, and someone asked her that question, and they said, “Is it difficult to act and direct in the same production?” And she had a great response. She said, “No, it's easier that way. That's one less person I have to argue with.”Jim: She's right. Absolutely right. So, talk a little bit about how the movie changed, you know, from your initial script and then through shooting and editing. Were there a lot of kind of, oh, let's do this. Oh, that didn't work. Lance: I'll tell you what: when I first had the idea, I didn't have a real clear idea of the tone I wanted to take, you know? As far as it could have been a drama, it could have been a comedy or whatever. But I started chatting with my buddy, Michael Goudeau. Now, Michael worked in my show, as my special guest star. We've been friends for, you know, since the mid-80s and Michael said, this was his idea. So, I gave him credit. He said, we should write this is a family film and I said, why is that? He says, because I have two small children and about two or three times a year, I have to take them to the movies and we have to pick a family film, and they're always horrible. That's why I'd like to see a good family film. Something good, we can take the kids to see. And I said okay, that's fine. You know, that fits. Magic's always been considered a good family entertainment. So, we chose to write it as a family friendly movie, and as a comedy, but I give credit to Michael for that, and it didn't alter that much. Once we had the script completed, the idea was, you know, to keep to the script as close as we can within reason. Now, there were some scenes that were improvised and there were some things that I added during the course of the movie. I'll tell you one thing that we added: the film starts with a dream sequence, with Billy floating a lady in the air. And then he wakes up in bed and you realize, oh, that was just a dream. He doesn't really have a big Las Vegas show. He's a birthday party magician and that was the first thing we shot. So, as we were shooting, I read a book by Robert Rodriguez about his experience shooting El Mariachi. That was recommended to me by Rory Johnston, who played the bad guy in my movie. When I explained to Rory what we were going to do, he said, oh, you're doing like a no budget movie, like Robert Rodriguez. And I said, Who's Robert Rodriguez? He said, he is just a director, he started out by making this movie called El Mariachi. He had $7,000. That was it and he made a whole film. And so, I bought the DVD to watch. I wanted to see what a $7,000 movie look like. And then I read his book and he had some really interesting advice and thoughts. He was talking about the power of three—which magicians will do also—where you have a callback, or something keeps popping back up, and it happens three times. In El Mariachi, there's like this sort of dream sequence. But it happens three times. And I started thinking, he's got a really good point there. So, I started thinking, where else could I insert, I need two more dream sequences? And I've got to find a place to insert them. So, we wrote two more dream sequences and found the right place to put them. And we shot that, but that kind of happened once we started once we started shooting.Jim: You know, John, as he's mentioned, has shot some low budget movies here and there, populated largely by friends of John. And I get the sense that, in watching your movie, that these people are all your buddies, that they're all your pals, these are all your friends. Lance: Oh, yeah, they're all my friends. The only time there were people in their movie, really, that I didn't know, like extras in the restaurant. We would just ask people, do you have any friends that you can come over and be background actors? And a lot of them are my friends. Like the birthday party scene: those kids are all kids of friends. Like, hey, if you got kids, bring them over to my stage manager's house.John: It really looks like you guys are having fun throughout the whole movie. I don't mean to denigrate it in any way, but it's a really goofy movie. It is surprisingly silly in a really fun way.Lance: It's a silly movie and a lot of that stuff is Michael Goudeau. Everybody loves Michael and loves his comedy and kids especially love him. So, that's we wanted to go for. For instance, when we were writing the date scene, you know, that was a silly scene and they were doing the game with the milk, the little milk containers. And Michael said, listen, when I take my kids to a movie, when it gets to the romantic the date scene, they are bored. They are like, oh, they're falling asleep going, oh, when is this over? So, let's beef this up with something silly. Hey, great. That sounds great. So, again, a lot of that stuff was just the purpose of the movie was to keep everybody's interest.John: And that's probably something you've learned from being on stage forever, is feeling when the audience might be getting bored and being ahead of them. Lance: Yeah, you don't want to get to that point. You want to keep it moving. Jim: Your friend Michael is in the movie?Lance: Yes, he is in the movie. He's one of the jugglers. Jim: Okay. But the taller one or the shorter one?Lance: The shorter one. He was my co-writer on the screenplay and also co-executive producer.Jim: At the very end, in the credits, there's some very clever, funny, little teases about the possibility and it was sort of like, gosh, I hope there is a sequel. Is there talk of that--?John: And I will say, I'm going to speak from my podcast partner here. We're standing by ready to help you if you want to do.Jim: Absolutely. I'll drop everything. Lance: Billy Topit Part Two, The Empire Strikes Back. Billy Topit Part Two, the Search for Spock. I tell you, that was just me getting at the end of the editing process and doing the credits and it's just going out. This will be funny. Just me just making up silly stuff.John: And the image of you doing that of sitting on a computer and editing, do you have the filmmaking bug now or you going to it doesn't have to be a sequel, Billy Topit, but...Lance: I've enjoyed. Here's the thing that I enjoyed the most on the whole process was learning to edit. My good buddy Bob Massey was our photographer and our editor. But in the process of editing, I would go over to his house, and we would work on it and then he'd have to go do something. I was like, do we have to stop? And one day he said, you know, I can give you the software. I bought this and I can put it on two computers legally. So, if you want to, I'll show you how. I went, yeah. So, I went out, I bought this and I put this stuff on, and I started to learn how to edit. Bob was there to help me, show me. I really loved it. I really, really loved the process. And a lot of it is very similar to magic. I'll give you a good example of that: There's a scene at the end of the movie where they've opened the big show and I do the sawing a couple into eight pieces. So, we got the two, the boy and the girl and they get sawed apart and they come out of the boxes at the end. And the boys were in the girl's clothes and they chase each other offstage. And then they run past the camera and then the second shot, you see them run into view in the wings. And then they have a scene in the wings. Well, we shot the first part, with the doing the trick, and then running past the camera. We shot that at the Monte Carlo hotel in 2010. And the scene in the wings, we shot in 2013, on the other side of town at Rory Johnson's church that he went to. They allowed us to shoot there. So, the two scenes that are supposed to be at the same time were shot three years apart in different locations. As we were shooting the first one, I knew in my mind what I wanted to do: I wanted him to run past the camera, and then I would pick it up. And the rest of the cast hadn't even been cast yet by the way. I didn't even know who the other actors were going to be. But I knew there was a scene over there. So, as they run past, I'll pick it up. Whenever we get to that three years later, we shoot the thing. Now I'm editing it together. So, now I take the music from the first part of the shot, playing during the trick and the audience reaction. You get the audience applauding and cheering, and they run past the camera and we go to the second shot. But you still hear the audio, you still hear the music playing, and you hear me out on stage going thank you and the audience applauding. And so now when you put it all together, it's like it's seamless. No one knows that that scene was shot three years apart. It's like a magic trick. It's an illusion. There's a good example of how the sound helps enhance the illusion. And there are a few magic tricks that we do on stage where sound is a very big part of the illusion.John: I don't know at what point in the process you read Robert Rodriguez's book, but he based El Mariachi on what he had available. He wrote the script based on the town, the bar, the tortoise, the dog, all of that. You seem to have done a very similar thing, in that I'm guessing you already had some footage you on stage or was it a relatively easy thing to get. For an average person, that's a really hard thing to get.Lance: Exactly. And I had to shoot all that before the show closed, because we were getting ready to close the show. So, we captured all of that all the stuff that had to be shot in the theatre, we captured that. John: But for the average person writing a script, to write that in a scene, you can't shoot that. The lights alone in the ceiling are more than your budget.Lance: And I was well aware that. I had this opportunity that we'd written it into the script and it's like, okay, I gotta shoot this now, because if I wait another two months, it's all going to be gone.John: Exactly. And I felt the same with the scenes in the casino, which would be I think, normally a difficult thing to do. But you obviously had a relationship to make those happen.Lance: The casino scenes, those were all shot afterwards. That was my buddy, John Woodrum, who owned this little casino called the Klondike. We wanted it to be a locals type Casino. I talked to a few of the casinos and some of them were like, yeah, we'd let you come in here and shoot, we have a coffee shop. How many days do you need it? And I'm going to myself, I don't know how long this is going to take to shoot. I never shot a movie before. And then finally I went over to see my buddy, John and I said, John, I've got this movie I'm shooting, and some of the action takes place in the casino. And there's a coffee shop and you've got a coffee shop. What would you think about a shooting here? And he looks at me says yeah, whatever you want. Come on in. I'm like, what? Come on, anytime. That's like, Okay, I found this. I found our location. John: You are a low-budget filmmaker at heart. You got all the tricks that are necessary to be good at this and you did it on your first movie. That's exceptional.Lance: It was a fun process and it's not dissimilar to shooting a television special or a TV show, but it is a little different. There is obviously magic in it. But you know, there's also the whole second element of the story and doing the scene and the acting and getting all the actors on the same page.John: And speaking of the actors, I was thrilled to see our friend Louie Anderson in there. He was a Twin Cities guy who I knew back when he was here and I had the good fortune of working with him a couple times in the corporate arena. And to see Johnny Thompson obviously having so much fun, it was just great. And then to see Mac kind of turn up. I don't want to spoil it. But he does turn upLance: Mac turns up there near the end of the film. It was great fun, being able to work with Johnny. To be able to direct your mentor is a really special thing and that was just so much fun working with Johnny, and he was just so good in this role.John: He was such a good actor, he really had that ability to turn it on. Lance: And Pam too. John: Oh, yeah, Pam was in there as well. It was just so much fun to see them just pop up like that.Jim: A delight, the whole thing was from start to finish was a delight. I watched it by myself after my wife went to bed and I just was giggling through the whole thing.Lance: Thank you. Here's my favorite story from the whole process. I had this idea to do the trick on the telephone, The Wizard, that that anybody that is amateur magician knows the trick. Well, when Michael and I were coming up with a storyline, I had this idea of using The Wizard as part of the kidnapping thing, to find out where the assistant was being held. In order to do that, of course, I had to show what The Wizard was. The reason I wanted to include that was I wanted kids especially to be able to watch the movie and then after the movie, I wanted them to be able to perform The Wizard for their friends. After we had our premiere, my wardrobe lady from the Monte Carlo—and she also did wardrobe on the movie—she called me like a week later. Her stepdaughter, who was in junior high school at that time, the little girl had gone to school the next day and had performed The Wizard for her friends. And when I heard that, I was like, yes, touchdown.John: Mission accomplished. Lance: Mission accomplished. It's exactly what I wanted. I wanted kids to go and actually perform a magic trick for their friends.Jim: But I really liked how you then turn it around and use it as a plot device. Lance: It's integral to the story. Yes, and those are those are especially the kind of things I like with magic in movies or TV shows: where you can take something and bring it back in later as a practical device.

Johnny Thompson is an El Paso legend. He grew up in the radio industry starting from age 13 to most of his life. His early radio deejaying career started at KINT Radio in El Paso where he and several other teenage deejays were basically running the station. They did it well!  As time marched on he went into tv and management. Johnny also became a local El Paso drummer playing with various groups much into his adult life. His last major drumming stint was with the legendary Long John Hunter - where Johnny fine tuned his shuffle/blues skills for over 5 years as Hunter's backing drummer at the local Kings-X night club. Twenty five years ago - in 1996, Johnny left El Paso for Florida where he decided to start a new life. He has officially graduated from an El Paso desert rat to a Florida beach bum and loving every minute of it. He's now working in realestate and v.p. in charge of watching beautiful scenery on the beach - if you catch my drift……     Rick Kern/Podcaster/Musician

In response to listeners’ requests for more content and conversations with children and family show entertainer, this week we go to the “top” and visit with David “Silly Billy” Kaye who is regarded by many as one of the best known kid show entertainers in the world today. Before the Magic Word Podcast became a reality, I was part of a podcast produced by Dodd Vickers called “Magic Newswire”. For quite some time on Sunday evenings, Dodd put together a small band of us, each with specific backgrounds and skill sets, to talk with some of the biggest names in magic (like Johnny Thompson, Mac King, Jamy Ian Swiss, and others). One of the other “co-hosts” with me was David Kaye. Though we had known each other from our times together at various magic conventions, we got to know each other better through our Sunday evening gatherings online from our respective homes before that was a “thing”. This is a performance of the magic trick called Princess In A Pickle, created by Silly Billy. It was shot at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. A great routine for your show. Packs really flat and plays big and funny for 7 minutes. Buy Princess in a Pickle at https://www.sillymagic.com/product/pr... Silly Billy performs children’s magic for kids in New York. Dealt is a 2017 American documentary film directed by Luke Korem. The film is about the life and career of Richard Turner - who is renowned as one of the world's greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind. It's a delightful documentary where the filmmaker stays out of it, and lets Richard and his family tell their story. And often Richard's hands do the talking. In the documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength. The film features extensive vérité footage of both Richard and his family as well as archive footage of Turner's many television appearances. The film features interviews with notable magicians including Turner, Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Armando Lucero, and Jason England. Dealt debuted at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival in competition where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Dealt went on to win four more audience awards and screened at festivals around the world including China and New Zealand. The film is distributed by IFC Films through Sundance Selects. In March 2013, I ran a cover story on Pam Thompson in M-U-M. While there had been many stories about Johnny Thompson in magic magazines, there had not been one on Pam, who was an integral part of the Tomsoni & Company act. In preparation for that article, I recorded several phone conversations with Pam. There were a few things she could not recall, so I scheduled another phone call that would include Johnny, who had amazing recall of dates, people, and events. We talked about how Johnny and Pam discussed what motivated their characters, their move to Los Angeles and their favorite houseguests, traveling with dogs, and a few other topics. This recording was done as a reference for preparing my article, not as a podcast, so there are some flaws in the audio quality. I hope you’ll ignore those glitches and will enjoy spending a few minutes with two of the best people in the world of magic. Mary Audrey Long sits down with John (her father) and Cobie to discuss the life skills learned and relationships developed through the first years in 4-H. Transcript: Announcer: This is 4-H-4-U-2, a podcast from the Mississippi State University Extension Service promoting 4-H programs and positive youth development. Here now your host, Dr. John Long and Cobie Rutherford. John Long: All right and welcome to another podcast of 4-H-4-U-2. I'm your host, John Long. Cobie Rutherford: And I'm Cobie Rutherford. John Long: And we are broadcasting live from Mississippi State University in the wonderful podcast room in Bost Extension Center here. Cobie Rutherford: Yes sir. John Long: Excited to be here and even more excited about the guest that we have on today, and that is Mary Audrey Long. She is joining us in the studio. Mary Audrey, how are you doing today? Mary Audrey Long: I'm doing good. John Long: Good, good, good. What have you been up to? Mary Audrey Long: Enjoying the first full day of summer. John Long: That's good, that's good. Cobie Rutherford: Oh, I remember those days. Summer was always something to look forward to. John Long: And it seemed like as a kid, I don't know, Cobie, do you feel like that summers are just much shorter now than they were when we were kids? Cobie Rutherford: It does. It seems way shorter. John Long: Yeah. Cobie Rutherford: And I always looked forward to spring break and summer, and there for a while, I always tried to take spring break, but it seems like the older I've gotten, the less that's happened. John Long: Yeah, that's true. That is true. I've had folks actually say, "Are y'all off all for spring break?" I said, "No, we're working." Cobie Rutherford: Yeah. John Long: I mean we've got things to do. We've got a lot of stuff to get ready for, and one of them being one that's coming up next week, which is Congress. Cobie Rutherford: That's right. It'll be here, 600 4-Hers across the state will be here on Mississippi State's campus. John Long: That's a lot, that is a lot, and it is a lot of fun too. Cobie Rutherford: No doubt. John Long: Yeah. We get to see a lot of different contests and workshops and get to see some really good talent too. Cobie Rutherford: So Mary Audrey, you're probably too young to come to Congress, but I know you're probably looking forward to that one day. Mary Audrey Long: I really am. I've heard so much about it and I've just been looking forward to it. John Long: So good. How long have you been in 4-H Mary Audrey? Mary Audrey Long: I think ... What's the age limit for it? John Long: It's eight. Mary Audrey Long: Eight, I did club and that was when I was about five. John Long: Yeah, that's about right, when you did Cloverbuds. Mary Audrey Long: Cloverbuds, and then I did archery, the shooting sports, it kind of hooks onto 4-H too and I've done that since I was old enough to and love it and it is the best thing. John Long: That's awesome. Mary Audrey Long: We've just had District too. John Long: That's good, that's good. How did you do at District? Mary Audrey Long: I actually got first place. It said in the bracket I got second but on my certificate it said first. John Long: Actually that was last year certificate I'm sorry to disappoint you. Cobie Rutherford: Wow. John Long: Dead air. Mary Audrey Long: Are you kidding me? John Long: Oh me. We are really winging this today and reason we're winging it is because we don't have our sound or our chief engineer, Art Shirley with us. We are going to get through this. Dead air or not, we're going to do it. But anyway you are saying ... Now let me ask you this. Why did you choose archery as far as being in the safety program? Why did you choose archery? And don't say it because I made you do it. Mary Audrey Long: Well, I chose archery because I had been doing archery since I was ... I don't know what, four? John Long: Yeah, probably. Mary Audrey Long: Four, maybe three, three, four. I don't know. John Long: Yeah, I got you a really little bow when you were little. I mean, little, little. Yeah, probably four. Mary Audrey Long: Yeah, but I have shot it since the day I can pick up a bow and I have loved it ever since. John Long: Good. Mary Audrey Long: [inaudible 00:03:56] So happy, when I found out that I could do it. Cobie Rutherford: Now I don't really know how a lot about safety programs and shooting sports programs. I didn't grow up a hunter, didn't participate in 4-H, but I know a few things about a bow and what is it when you pull back on on the string, if there's not an arrow on it, you shouldn't do that, right? If there's not arrow loaded on the bow? Mary Audrey Long: You should really not do that, it'll break the bow basically. I did that once, I forgot about the arrow not being in my bow and it just broke. What was the daddy? Was it my peeps? Did my peeps come off? John Long: Yeah, it was a lot of stuff came off. Mary Audrey Long: Yeah, it's a really bad thing. John Long: It's called dry fire. Cobie Rutherford: And see, that amazes me because I learned that in physics class- John Long: Oh, really? Cobie Rutherford: In college actually. It's like Mary Audrey's already got a jump on some physics and different mechanisms of bow and arrows before she even gets to that upper level sides. That's pretty cool. Mary Audrey Long: You can learn a lot in 4-H, especially shooting sports, a lot of science, physics. John Long: Yeah it is, it takes a lot of that. Cobie Rutherford: And the other thing we learned was how you have to ... If you're shooting far away, have to adjust for the wind and you may have to aim a little bit higher than you wanted to because it might drop. Do you use all that kind of in your strategy when you're competing? Mary Audrey Long: I actually ... Before competition were not allowed to move anything during competition unless we're senior at State, but we can only adjust it before competition. We can't do it while we're shooting. I always shoot before my competition to find out where I'm needed to aim and all that and where my site needs to be. And then that's just how I kind of get ready for competition since we can't move it. Cobie Rutherford: That's cool. Mary Audrey Long: When I'm a senior at State or District, isn't it District you can do that daddy? John Long: It's at State what you're telling him about. Mary Audrey Long: Yeah, at State you can only move it while you're competing. John Long: Right, right. When you have an archery practice- Mary Audrey Long: I do. John Long: ... How does that work exactly? What do you do during that practice? Mary Audrey Long: Basically what you do is we have the whole team from our County, [inaudible 00:06:24] County, and we have a coach named Johnny Thompson. I think a lot of people know him from horse riding and all that. What we have to do is at the beginning of the year, we make a line and we lay out targets. And then all the people from [inaudible 00:06:44] County, they come and we will all shoot, well we go in rounds like you would at District or State or whatever. John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: And the junior will shoot inside, since we had to switch facilities and the seniors will shoot outside. John Long: Okay. Mary Audrey Long: If there aren't enough kids to go on the line, then we'll have sections that you do at District or State, which will have one round of kids and then another round, like morning one, two and three. John Long: That kind of prepares you for going to a District event, really. Mary Audrey Long: It really does because you can fit in people at certain times if people aren't there, so that's a good thing that we use in practice. Cobie Rutherford: That's pretty interesting. What about with the firearms? What do you participate in that side of the safety program as well? Mary Audrey Long: Well, we actually have to get them checked at District and stuff like that and State too. Cobie Rutherford: Do you shoot a pistol or a .22 rifle or any of that stuff? Mary Audrey Long: I do not, but I really kind of want to shoot .22 rifle next year. Cobie Rutherford: Okay, good deal. John Long: Yeah, because you'd be old enough to do it at that point. Yeah. What do you feel like ... Like you mentioned you've been in different parts of 4-H and the club level. Like I said, pretty much and grown up in 4-H, what do you think is one of the main things that you have learned while you've been in 4-H? Mary Audrey Long: I think it's being more responsible and being more careful because before I went to the club and before I went to doing archery and shooting sports, I was not as responsible I should have been with firearms. I had a BB gun when I was little, I was not as responsible I should have been with that. John Long: Yeah, I know. Mary Audrey Long: Thank you. Cobie Rutherford: Sounds like you've got a story behind that. John Long: We're not telling anything no, but go ahead. I'm sorry I interrupted you. Mary Audrey Long: And I was not as responsible I should've been. I'm more careful with how I shoot and what is around me while I'm shooting and that has just changed me a lot and it actually helped me be more comfortable shooting stuff. John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: Because since my dad's one of the ... We'll have to go Nationals and stuff like that when I was a baby, I basically grew up around guns and stuff like that since I hunt too. John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: And that's just helped me want to shoot more. John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: Actually shot my first Clyde in December and busted it and I was crying. Cobie Rutherford: That's cool. John Long: Yeah, it was pretty awesome right there. When she shot, I turned around and she was crying, I thought she was crying because of the gun- Cobie Rutherford: Because it kicked her. John Long: ... Right, but it wasn't, I said, "Are you okay?" She's like, "Yes." And I said, "What's wrong?" She's like, "I'm just happy." Cobie Rutherford: I'm just happy. John Long: But anyway, that was pretty cool too. Mary Audrey Long: I had ate three waffles that morning. Dominic, the guy we were hunting with, we're actually duck hunting. He was like, "I guess it was because of those waffles.?" John Long: Yeah, that's right, it's the waffles that'll get you. I don't know if that's good advice, eat waffles before you get out of line, but hey, it might work for some people I guess. Mary Audrey Long: Oh, I don't know. John Long: Yeah, I don't know either. Cobie Rutherford: That's funny. John Long: You mentioned safety and I think safety first and foremost, and we preach that all the time, don't we? And even around guns. What is one of the main things I tell you to do when you're handling a firearm? What's the first thing you do once you have it in your hands? Mary Audrey Long: Check it because you have no clue, you might've forgotten if you have a ...What do you call it? John Long: A bullet or a shale or something like that. Mary Audrey Long: What do you call it? One of them things, you know how you stick in your rifle? A magazine. John Long: Yeah, a magazine. Mary Audrey Long: Might have a magazine and left a shell in there or something, and that safety might be off. I mean, and you could be aiming it and then you know how you can kind of click it? John Long: Yeah, we don't want to do that first thing. Mary Audrey Long: No, the gun might go off. You just always want to be safe and make sure that that gun is not loaded, so something bad could happen- John Long: Exactly. Mary Audrey Long: ... It always can. I mean there's a 99.9% of it happening. 50, 50, whatever. John Long: You don't know unless you check it. Mary Audrey Long: Exactly. John Long: And all guns are to be treated as if ... Mary Audrey Long: They are a person. John Long: They are loaded. Mary Audrey Long: Same thing. John Long: But do you ... Yeah, right. I guess some people are loaded, I don't know. Cobie Rutherford: Yeah, that's one thing that my grandpa taught me. He was a hunter and he told me to never ever point a gun at anything unless you intended to shoot it. John Long: Shoot it, yeah, that's right. That's exactly right. Same for a target. Cobie Rutherford: Yeah. John Long: I mean, you don't want to ever point a barrel at anything that you're not ... You want to keep it in a safe direction, and another thing is too, is that that goes for archery as well. Cobie Rutherford: Yeah. Mary Audrey Long: It really does. John Long: For sure. Mary Audrey Long: You just need to be careful because that end on that arrow could kill somebody right when it hits them, you always need to make sure what is around you and what could be coming through the area that you're shooting. John Long: Target, that's right, and always be careful to be aware of- Mary Audrey Long: Your surrounding- John Long: Who's behind you too. Mary Audrey Long: Yeah. John Long: You want to make sure, you don't want to jab. Mary Audrey Long: And you don't want animals outside while you are shooting. John Long: Yes, that's right. That's exactly right. I think that goes to the fact that we preach safety, safety, safety, and I think that goes a very well for the safety record that we do have in shooting sports. I think that one of the things that emphasis goes just is always at the forefront and it always should be at forefront, but what do you feel like you as a person ... How do you think you as a person, what do you think one particular thing in four H safety that has taught you responsibility or good sportsmanship? Can you think of any moment in 4-H Safety that really was memorable and was kind of a learning experience for you? Mary Audrey Long: Last year. Basically last year I was not shooting my best at all, it was a learning experience to listen what other people had to tell me about getting better. And that was a really learning experience because at the beginning of this year I was not shooting my best, but as it went on, I kept getting better because I would listen to people's advice for me and that was a really good learning experience and stuff like that. The first year I shot the first ever shot I shot all in the practice line was in the bullseye and that was a really fun moment for me. John Long: That's good, that's really good. What about friendships? Because I know that we have friends at school and then we have friends in sometimes those in 4-H Safety and sometimes those actually overlap. But do you feel like you've made new friendships with people in 4-H and how has that been for you as far as that experience? Mary Audrey Long: Yes. I've made so many more friends and I love it because they can help me get better and I can help and give them good advice and they can help me and give me good advice and I love making all these new friends because they're are so nice. And I mean, I just loved it. John Long: That's good. Cobie Rutherford: You probably have a chance to meet people from outside of your club and your County too, don't you? Mary Audrey Long: I do actually. I stood on the line this year at District with this girl and she was actually from ... What's Columbus County? John Long: Lowndes County. Mary Audrey Long: Lowndes County, she's from Lowndes County. John Long: Shout out to Lowndes County 4-H. Mary Audrey Long: Yep, and she was really nice and we talked every time we got off the line and it was just fun, I love standing by people I don't know. And because I always don't want to get by people I know, even though sometimes I do- John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: ... Because then they'll keep talking to me while I'm shooting, shout to that other dude. John Long: To Trey. That's who you're talking about, who's on the line. Mary Audrey Long: I'm talking about that dude who would not shut his- John Long: No, no, no. We're not talking about that. Cobie Rutherford: That talked a lot. John Long: Yeah, yeah. You can't be too talky. Cobie Rutherford: That would be distracting I think, shooting beside chatty Cathy. You pull back your bow and then she gets loud or something, then you might shoot up in a tree. John Long: No, that's exactly it. You don't want to do that. For sure. Mary Audrey Long: But it's good to not get by people who you don't know, it'll keep you from talking to them, but you also need to learn how to keep that stuff out of your head- John Long: Right, right. Mary Audrey Long: ... Which I did not have good handle over. Cobie Rutherford: Yeah, because that's probably part of the strategy. If you're beside somebody that was really, really good and you're like, well I'm going to try to get them off their game. That's not very good sportsmanship- John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: No, it's not. Cobie Rutherford: But it's kind of probably a fine line between being friendly and aggravating. John Long: That's right, that's right. Mary Audrey Long: And I'm pretty competitive, so it's hard to ... John Long: I've told her before that when you get on the line, it's only you in the target and you are the only thing that's in control of that moment and once that arrows gone, you can't take it back. So you have focused on the next arrow Mary Audrey Long: Yeah, I've always kind of learned from that and it's been good. John Long: That's good, that's good. What do you feel like ... You said you think you might try .22 next year, that'll be good. Mary Audrey Long: Yes. I basically got it from Santa Clause, I got a .22 rifle, and I've been shooting it forever. John Long: Yeah, you've been going through my bullets pretty quick too. Mary Audrey Long: Well at least I'm shooting. John Long: Well, I said that that I would buy all the bullets you needed. Cobie Rutherford: Wow. Mary Audrey Long: And I've loved it. It's been one of those little Crickett ones and it's camo, which I love, and it has a side arm, this .22 rifle. John Long: It has a little scope on it too. Cobie Rutherford: It fits you. John Long: What do you think is one of the things that if you had a young person that would be interested in the 4-H safety program, what would you suggest that they do? How do you think they should get into it? Mary Audrey Long: Well, it would have to depend on what they would want to do, I guess, because I mean, I might don't want to make the decision for them- John Long: Right. Mary Audrey Long: Because they might have an interest in stuff, but it would probably be archery, shotgun or .22 rifle. John Long: Yeah, and probably a little bit biased on archery, I would guess, because that's what you're doing, right now. Mary Audrey Long: Yeah, yeah. John Long: That's good, that's good. Well, Mary Audrey, we thank you so much that take a just a few moments out of your busy schedule. Mary Audrey Long: Oh, so busy, so, so busy. John Long: So, so busy. Cobie Rutherford: On the first day of summer. John Long: First day of summer, that's right. Mary Audrey Long: So busy. John Long: For you. Thank you for coming in and sitting down with us, we appreciate it. Mary Audrey Long: You're welcome, I really liked it. Cobie Rutherford: Yeah. Good deal. You did a good job. Fantastic conversation with the exceptionally brilliant and talented performer Emery Emery. We discuss comedy in great detail, the current social climate and how comedy interacts with it, alternative and unconventional comedy, sleight of hand artist Johnny Thompson, and so much more. This is the first in a series that will continue throughout the life of the podcast. I would imagine at least three parts.

On this episode I discuss the life of Professor Harry Cooke, who was a Civil War era magician and had some interesting ties to Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln's death. I also talk about some of the recent deaths in magic of Marshall Brodien, Steve Duscheck, and Johnny Thompson. And, of course, today is Houdini's Birthday, Happy Birthday Harry! So in honor of Houdini I talk a bit about a pet peeve of mine, 'people who say Houdini was a bad magician'. I try and make a case to show in fact he was NOT a bad magician. It goes without saying that the magic community is still reeling from the loss of one of our mentors, the amazing Johnny Thompson. It was because of him that I put together this interview with him and some of Charlie Miller's students and friends. The original description of this interview follows: "Seconds, bottoms, the pass, Malini, Vernon and so much more. Charlie Miller is one of those names that is often mentioned in the context of modern card magic. In that same context, he is one of those technicians that I think that many of us know too little about. I hope that this conversation with some of his closest friends does something to rectify that. In this episode of the Magic Newswire's "Spirit of Magic" podcast, our good friend Johnny Thompson is joined by two other legends in magic, Harry Riser and Bob White. I am only there to guide the conversation, but what an amazing conversation it was! Enjoy and learn!"  We miss you sorely Johnny!

I am so very sad to report on the passing of yet another of the greats in our art. Johnny "The Great Tomsoni" Thompson was my guest on several episodes of the Magic Newswire's Spirit of Magic Podcast. This is one of my favorites and the earliest. Please listen and remember in his honor! Johnny was much more than an extremely well respected performer and one of the funniest magicians out there. He was also a much sought after magic consultant and worked with such performers as Lance Burton, Penn & Teller and Criss Angel. In the first interview below, Johnny talked about his career as well as his experiences with other performers including Herb Zarrow, Jay Marshall, Marshal Brodein, Francis Carlyle, Paul le Paul, Paul Rosini, Joe Bergen, Cardini, Channing Pollock, Carl Balentine, Al Koran, Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller.

"Some demented magician would take over a movie theater at midnight on Saturday. He'd choose creepy tricks and return-of-the-dead patter and the show would climax with him producing a monster, like a mummy, who would stagger into the audience as the lights went out. All the teenagers would clutch their dates and scream and giggle," he adds, "and take advantage of the darkness to have a great time." This is the Teller's description of the Midnight Spook Shows that served to inspire he, Todd Robbins and Johnny Thompson as they collaborated to deliver the off-Broadway production, "Play Dead." Somehow, magic and mystery are combined to bring joy to the audience by scaring them to death and we talk about how that's possible!

Johnny Thompson is one of the most respected minds in magic. These days he works with Penn & Teller on both their TV show "Fool Us" and their show at the Rio in Las Vegas. His passion for show business began at a young age, and he was drawn to carny sideshow. Thompson shares the story of the evolution of his career from a pitchman to sewer worker, jazz musician, orchestrator and magician. Along the way, Thompson refined both his comedy and magical skills which led to the creation of his nightclub act The Great Tomsoni & Co. When was the last time you had the chance to spend fifty minutes with a living legend reflecting on his life? It was an honour for me, and I hope you find the time for this intimate interview. Thompson's secrets have been collected in a two-volume publication: "The Magic of Johnny Thompson." It includes contributions from Teller and Lance Burton both of whom learned significantly from Thompson and both of whom we discuss in the interview. Other magicians who come up in the interview include Piff the Magic Dragon, Marshall Brodien and the inventor of the "bra trick" Howard Brooks. As a boy discovering the art of magic while living in South Florida, making the trip to Paul's shop in the Lauderdale by the Sea area was a must! I was lucky enough to get my first exposure to magic through a teacher associated with Paul's shop when I was in elementary school. As it turns out, Paul was also a favorite performer of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Over the years, he's been a featured entertainer for celebrity events hosted by Celine Dion, Elton John, Milton Berle and many others. In addition, Paul had such close association with such magic legends as Slydini and Charlie Miller live with him in his Florida home. First of all, Kenton and his family are all okay and nobody was harmed, but some of the notable things stolen from him were a brand new computer that hadn’t even made it out of the box, and a number of guitars and other musical instruments that he uses for his music and meditation work. So, if you are a friend of Kenton, or his work has helped you in any way, please consider helping him out with a donation of any size. It would mean the world to both Kenton and myself. Johnny Thompson and Pamela Hayes are best know within the world of magic as The Great Tomsoni & Co. Johnny is widely recognized as one of the great thinkers in magic today. In spite of that, he and Pam still decided to have some fun chatting with us on This Week in Magic. Pam tells us what it is like working with the Adonis of the Las Vegas Showroon and Johnny shares the experience of tearing off Pam's dress with our resident cougar hunter. In addition, I was totally surprised to learn that one of Johnny's teachers in High School was an magician that you should all know. Johnny also channels Dai Vernon for a few great stories!

Seconds, bottoms, the pass, Malini, Vernon and so much more. Charlie Miller is one of those name tossed around in the context of modern magic that I feel most f the community knows too little about.  I hope that this conversation with some of his closest friends does something to rectify that.  Our good friend Johnny Thompson is joined by two other legends in magic, Harry Riser and Bob White.

Paul Diamond may not be a household name in the world of magic today, but everyone that I speak to from Johnny Thompson, to Mac King & Lance Burton, etc... all know Mr. Humble. I was lucky enough to get my first exposure to magic through Paul's shop when I was ten years old. As it turns out, Paul was also a favorite performer of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Over the years, he's been a featured entertainer for celebrity events hosted by Celine Dion, Elton John, Milton Burle and others. In addition, Paul had such legends as Slydini and Charlie Miller live with him in his Florida home. Rediscover "Mr. Humble," Mr. Paul Diamond on this episode of the Magic Newswire's "Spirit of Magic Podcast."
