Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling tiny crystalline particles of silica, or silicon dioxide, often linked to work environments like mining, construction, stonework, and sandblasting. The disease leads to symptoms such as coughing, inflammation, and fibrosis (scarring) and is classified under pneumoconioses, a group of lung conditions caused by inhaling dust. Silicosis can be chronic, developing over more than 10 years of exposure; subacute, occurring in two to five years with heavier exposure; or acute, which can happen within months of intense exposure. Although silicosis is irreversible and has no cure, treatments are available to manage symptoms.

An industry health and safety group believes more regulation is needed to make working with potentially dangerous engineered stone benches safer but a total ban on products containing silica is unworkable. A group of Doctors has written to the government urging it to follow in Australia's footsteps and outlaw the composite stone product that's popular in kitchen and bathroom ware. Silica dust produced when the the benches are cut is proven to cause the lung disease Silicosis, as well as cancer, kidney and heart disease. The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation is also backing a ban. IMPAC Director Tom Reeves speaks to Lisa Owen
Doctors are calling for a ban on engineered stone that's commonly used in kitchen and bathroom benchtops saying it's causing serious illness and death to workers, who are processing it. Silica dust from engineered or human made stone has been proven to cause the lung disease Silicosis, as well as cancer, kidney and heart disease. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians has written to the government saying about a thousand former and current stone masons are at risk. Dr Alexandra Muthu spokesperson for the Royal Australiasian College of Physicians, speaks to Lisa Owen.
Dr Jeremy T. Hua MD, MPH is a lung doctor at National Jewish Health in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. He specializes in patients who get sick from where they work and how we can help keep them healthy. Today we discuss crystalline silica and the booming lung disease caused by inhaling it. Many of the workplaces are smaller, and employers may be unaware of the risk to employees or be put at a competitive disadvantage if they do address the risk and wider standards are not in place to protect all workers. However, the products involving quartz are everywhere, often in our kitchens, bathrooms and more. Listen and learn how so many of the products in are lives increasingly use engineered stone, how silica exposure is increasing, and what needs to be done. To Do - Learn more about silicosis from the American Lung Association or at the post for this episode. - When considering a kitchen upgrade or other changes, consider avoiding engineered stone unless you know it has been made with high safety standards in place. - Write to your members of Congress to encourage robust funding and staffing of OSHA and MSHA. - Listen to last month's podcast episode about coal mining and silica with Dr. Drew Harris to learn more about how to support miners. - Consider a donation to the American Lung Association, who advocates for patients with lung diseases including Silicosis. Health workers say engineered stone workshops need to do better to prevent a deadly disease, that can cause lung scarring. A Ministry of Health check recommends more be done to prevent silicosis, which can happen when engineered stone dust is inhaled. The ministry supports more ventilation systems, and masks, to stop this. College of Physicians silicosis expert Alexandra Muthu told Mike Hosking there should be a better occupational health service. She says at the moment, everything falls between Worksafe, ACC, Te Whatu Ora, and industry. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mat Britton is a well-known physiotherapist and local legend who has been part of the Greater Springfield community for many years. He played an integral part in founding the Springfield Runners Group well over a decade ago and through his passion for sport and running, has been able to treat and get people back doing whatever they love to do. In 2014, Mat founded "Trail to Triumph - Tony's Journey" in memory of his dad Tony, who sadly lost his battle to Mesothelioma in March 2014. In October that year TTT was born with the first 250km ultramarathon from Mackay to Moranbah run completed over 2 1/2 gruelling days. It's been run every October and again this year, runners will attempt to complete the 250km Moranbah to Mackay journey from the October 6th - 8th. The event not only is held in memory of Tony Britton but it works to raise awareness and funds to assist in assessment, treatment and research for Mesothelioma and others lung diseases like Silicosis. You can donate to the cause at the below links. As you'll hear in the conversation, Mat has been overwhelmed and truly grateful for the support he has and continues to receive throughout the year through not only the run but also events such as Annual Golf Day, Trivia Night, Brushes and Bubbles and the Virtual Events run. When you attend a function or if you're fortunate enough attend the run up north, you become part of the TTT family which has grown to large numbers, which can be seen by the record group heading up this year. In the conversation with Mat, Steve talks to him about life, how he became a Physio, his reflections on sport, his time in martial arts and plenty of stories in between. It's his love and passion for TTT that truly is a delight within the discussion and his unwavering focus on helping to make a difference to those suffering and experiencing lung diseases that really shines. Federal and state ministers of occupational health and safety will next week consider banning popular engineered stone products because of links to an incurable lung disease. Silicosis can be caused by inhaling particles of crystalline silica, and more than six hundred thousand workers in stone-cutting industries are exposed to the dust. If you are in the stone fabrication business, you are creating airborne silica. Its not a question of whether you or your employees are breathing it. The question is whether the levels are safe for you and your staff and whether they are below the OSHA PEL (permissible exposure levels). In this episode of the Fab Lab Podcast, we hear from Mark Meriaux from the Natural Stone Institute on changes to OSHA and what it means for you as a shop owner as well as what you can do to minimize the risk to your employees as well as the risk to your company. Its sobering but good stuff. Safe Fabricating! A young horse is found with silicosis, and the owner has trouble figuring out what to do. Douglas Lenat helps them make a plan for treating the horse.
Just imagine wishing for lung cancer, because it's better than the alternative of the incurable disease you've been handed, just for doing your job. Dozens of underground workers are now demanding the government introduce regulations to protect half a million Australians exposed to silica dust.
On today's episode of For Flux Sake our hosts talk about studio cleanliness and the presence of silica in our community studios. Matt shares a CDC paper on the topic and settles a few misconceptions about the prevalence of silicosis in studio ceramics.
