The Skeleton Coast of Namibia is infamous for the countless shipwrecks scattered along its shores, a haunting reminder of the treacherous conditions mariners have faced for centuries. Thick, unpredictable fogs, strong Atlantic currents, and hidden sandbars have made navigating this coastline perilous, often leading ships to run aground. Some of the wrecks, dating as far back as the early Portuguese explorers, remain visible today, slowly being reclaimed by the sands. The coast earned its name because of these wrecks and the skeletal remains of whales, seals, elephants, and even humans found on its shores. Notable shipwrecks, like the Dunedin Star and Eduard Bohlen, offer a glimpse into the tragic history of those who sailed too close to the Skeleton Coast. The Dunedin Star ran aground in 1942, prompting a dramatic rescue operation, while the Eduard Bohlen, stranded in 1909, now rests eerily in the middle of the desert due to shifting sands. These wrecks, partially buried and weathered by time, have become iconic landmarks, drawing adventurers and history enthusiasts alike to this isolated coastline. The haunting presence of these wrecks is a stark reminder of the unpredictable power of nature in this remote and desolate region. Otherworldly: Relating to an imaginary or spiritual world. One of the many, many benefits of being a digital nomad is that you sometimes end up in places that look like a completely different planet. These are places where you have to pinch yourself, because you're looking at landscapes that you have only seen in movies, or your dreams. These locations aren't often the places where people live and work as digital nomads, but rather nearby destinations that you travel through on mini adventures. They're usually so far off the beaten path that you'll never be able to access them with the typical two week travel vacation. Marisa, Jeff and Diego have been to dozens of otherworldly places in their travels as digital nomads. In this episode they share their top 10 locations. Some of the locations they discuss are: The Skeleton Coast in Namibia. The Rainbow Mountains in Peru. The salt flats in Bolivia. The Wahiba desert in Oman If you're an adventurer at heart, this episode is the ultimate bucket list guide for you. We help people like you find legitimate remote jobs every day! It's a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it's filled with salt. The skeleton coast of Namibia is one of the most iconic maritime locations on earth. Here the fearsome Namib desert runs right to the sea. Over the centuries the sand dunes have grown and the shoreline has moved further away as the desert reclaims the sea. The coastline itself is formidably dangerous. Plagued by shallow sandbars, fog and treacherous currents, thousands of ships are known to have wrecked here from the earliest period of European exploration of the African coast. The result is an extraordinary collection of shipwrecks surrounded by desert. To help understand the rich history of this extraordinary place Dr Sam Willis spoke with Eliot Mowa, a lecturer at the University of Namibia with an expertise in maritime history and the maritime culture of Namibia. In 2019 she became the first person to cycle 1600km through the sands of the Namibian coast and is working toward the first-ever Antarctic bicycle crossing via the South Pole for her educational outreach organization, Breaking the Cycle. In May of this year Leeming completed her latest expedition, The Andes, the Altiplano & the Atacama. The 4,400km adventure began just as Covid-19 hit, forcing her to end her trip after 1,100km of riding. She returned earlier this year to successfully complete the trip. In this episode, we ask: What is your first memory of going on an adventure? Were you a good student in school? Did you enjoy learning? Have you always considered yourself an explorer? How does Breaking the Cycle: Education connect with your expeditions? What is the goal? What got you interested in the traversing the Skeleton Coast in Namibia by bike? Tell us about the all-wheel-drive fat bike you used. Was this a custom set up, or something you were able to find off the shelf? How did the bike perform? Were there any surprises along the way? How do you prepare for such massive expeditions, especially ones that no one else has completed before? How much of the preparation involves physical training versus research and logistics? How do you prepare yourself mentally? What are the challenges that women continue to face in the world of adventuring and exploring today? Are there ways we can be “explorers” in our day-to-day lives? What is the value of staying curious? Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That's Namibia's Skeleton Coast. It's a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it's filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean. Kate is back today to tell us about cycling the length of this incredibly unique place.Enjoy!Learn more about Kate and her upcoming film(s):www.kateleeming.comwww.Breakingthecycle.educationFacebook: @kate.m.leemingInstagram: @Leeming_KateSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. He is the bassist of The Lawrence Arms. He is the mastermind behind The Falcon. He is a solo artist. He does several podcasts. He has a newsletter. He is Brendan Kelly.Brendan’s most musical recent output was Skeleton Coast, The Lawrence Arms’ seventh record, which falls into the category of Albums I’ve Been Itching to See Performed Live but Haven’t Been Able to Due to This Fucking Pandemic. We didn’t talk about the album, though. That would’ve been smart. Instead, we somehow got sidetracked talking about The Lawrence Arms’ lifetime ban from the Warped Tour, and eventually we went down a wormhole about our favorite Simpsons episodes. Look, I don’t profess to understand how or why these conversations turn out the way they do. If you're reading this, chances are you know Chris McCaughan from his work in The Lawrence Arms. Over the course of more than 20 years singing and playing guitar in the iconic Chicago punk band, McCaughan has shared the stage with some of his favorite musicians, performed throughout the world, contributed to a number of celebrated records and has earned the affection of countless diehard fans all over the globe. Prior to his unlikely beginning with The Lawrence Arms and well before he started his beloved Sundowner side project, McCaughan was just a kid taking piano lessons, teaching himself to play guitar and falling in love with punk rock. A few weeks after The Lawrence Arms released its seventh studio album, the wonderful Skeleton Coast, the band's guitarist and co-vocalist told My First Band host Tyler Maas about the process of writing the record remotely, the decision to release it during a pandemic and how comparing songs with longtime bandmate/lifelong friend Brendan Kelly breeds healthy competition and makes for great material. Over the course of the interview, McCaughan also spoke about middle school "bands" like Vegetable Train and Glad Hand (both of which also featured Kelly), his stints in Tricky Dick and The Broadways, the unexpected origin of The Lawrence Arms, his decision to start Sundowner, and the unforgettable experiences music has given him through the years. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Overlanding Africa with kids: would you do it? This week's guest just finished an amazing trip through six African countries — all in a Land Rover. If you're interested in what it's like to drive across the African continent, listen in! Overlanding Africa with Kids If you've ever thought about driving across Africa, then this is an interview for you. Jenny Lynn and her family have just returned from overlanding Africa for months. They started in South Africa. Then they drove through Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Namibia. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: Land Rovers, Camping, Self-Drive Safaris & More In today's episode of Epic Education Radio, we talk to Jenny about shipwrecks, self-drive safaris, sand traps and more. We talk planning, budgeting and the on-the-ground experience of overlanding Africa. If you're interested in exploring places like Mozambique, Tanzania, and Namibia with kids, then listen in. Or look for more overland travel stories The last time we spoke to Jenny, she and her family were living in India. As we catch up, she tells me about the changes since we last talked. Her husband decided to take a voluntary redundancy package so they could plan an overland trip in Africa with their two young boys. LINKS & RESOURCES Tracks4Africa Books & Maps Drive Moz   FIND THEM ON TraveLynn Family | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Pinterest What is Overlanding? The term "overlanding" is the idea of driving yourself from country to country. No planes. The term is often used when talking about driving across continents like Africa, Australia or South America. However, I consider any long-term, multi-country trip where you drive yourself the entire way to be overlanding, or overland travel. That could be by car, train, boat or bicycle. It could be on foot. As long as you stay on the ground and cross over the land that way, let's call that overlanding.  How to Plan an Overland Trip  One of the trickiest parts of the planning became an act of pure luck and serendipity. A South African friend rented them their own Land Rover, complete with stove, fridge, and tents that pop up on the top. They camped their way through Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Namibia, stocking up at local markets along the way. She describes their ride and the patterns of life in more detail in the podcast. Did they have any experience overlanding in Africa? Not really. They had backpacked in various African destinations before kids. They had also had driven a 2-wheel-drive car there. That said, they learned that overlanding Africa is a completely different thing. Did they have any 4-wheel-drive training? Not before they left. They learned along the way. It was a challenge but worth it, she said. There were roads turned to slush because of massive rains. There were sandtraps where local kids helped them push the landrover out. Overlanding in Africa is not for the faint of heart, but at the same time, it's not as hard as one might think. Is Overlanding Africa Safe? Many of you are probably asking yourself: is overlanding Africa safe? According to Jenny, absolutely yes. Sure, there are hazards to navigate: wildlife, bad roads, and the corrupt police are a few. That said, Jenny says that it was much easier than you might expect. As for health and safety, we discuss immunizations and first aid. Aside from a few scrape and bruises (kids are kids after all), they had no incidents. As for food, Jenny says that they could always find things some of their staples. Things like eggs, potatoes, and bananas were common, with other things available in different places. We also talk malaria: a genuine concern in many countries in Africa. She talks about the medicine they took and her reasoning behind it. Overlanding Mozambique with Kids According to Jenny, many had warned them that Mozambique would be a challenge. That they would be stopped frequently by local police and other irritations. However, this turned out not to be the case for them at all. They had no issues overlanding in Mozambique and enjoyed some of its amazing beaches. In fact, Jenny says that they rival the beaches of Australia — a bold statement to be sure. Overlanding Tanzania with Kids For the Lynn family, it turns out, overlanding in Tanzania was the real challenge. For one thing, there are political changes happening in the country. This made some interactions with police and government officials more awkward. Then there were the prices. For example, everyone wants to see the Serengeti, right? So did Jenny and family. However, the prices and paperwork made it a no-go. However, they chose a lesser-known National Park (Tangiri) for a self-drive safari. The result: it was a 10th of the price but with plenty of wildlife. Another challenge in Tanzania was the weather: the country was having the worst rains in a decade. This made overlanding Tanzania even more of a struggle. They ended up speeding through the country and leaving earlier than they planned. But not before seeing Mount Kilimanjaro, which made the visit all worth it. Overlanding Malawi with Kids Jenny says that despite some initial issues with their entry visa, they loved their time in overlanding Malawi. The people were warm and welcoming, she says and there are some great hikes that even little kids can do. The country is dense, so it's easy to get from one place to the next without long drives. Of course, Lake Malawi is another highlight. Overlanding Namibia with Kids Out of all the African countries they visited on this trip, Namibia is where she recommends to first-time visitors to the continent. Overlanding Namibia is easier, she says. There are better roads, good medical care, and affordable self-drive safaris. What's more, Namibia has some of the most unique and otherworldly landscapes in the world. There are deserts and jaw-dropping landscapes. Namibian-born, German-speaking, ostrich-riding Sebastian Gerber sits down with your host over a glass of bourbon and a softpack of Chesterfields to talk all things Namibia, from yanking tigerfish out of the Zambezi River to the super secret, super spooky reason why the Skeleton Coast is called the Skeleton Coast (hint: it has to do with skeletons). Other matters of note addressed during the course of this convo: the KFC® Double Down™ sandwich, why at least one Namibian finds Americans lovable, why honey badgers are not to be trifled with, and how diplomacy might finally lead to peace (albeit, perhaps, an uneasy one) between humans and baboons.

How do you become the traveler you know you can be? What is the first step on the road to travel? Rolf Potts has the answers to these questions in his back pocket, and he’s more than willing to share; in fact, he’s been giving people this advice for years. Rolf is also one of the reasons Hayden himself got into travel, as Rolf and his book, Vagabonding , crystallized what Hayden had been thinking about travel for his whole life until that point. It gave him the push to become the traveler he knew that he could be all along. Rolf Potts - travel writer, adventurer, teacher, vagabonder, and legend - is the one you want to be at your side when you need that push into travel. He knows that vital first step to becoming the traveler. The Gates of Hell Rolf Potts revisits us to tell a story about the people you meet when you travel - both those you want to meet, and those you dread meeting. Rolf traveled to Namibia, which he had heard was quite isolated and severe. What was most famous was the sand dunes, of course, but Rolf was intrigued by the Skeleton Coast, also commonly referred to as the Gates of Hell or the Land God Made in Anger. The road basically disappears, so it is pretty much impossible to drive the entire way along the Skeleton Coast to the border, and, as such, Rolf didn’t expect to see many people in this place. The coast is lined with shipwrecks, each of which has its own turnout off the highway. Ruin after ruin, all the way up the coast, giving a haunted, romantic feel to those who view the rotted ships and those very human feelings. Rolf visited one of these particular ships and encountered Namibian guys who wanted to sell him souvenirs, tribesmen who sell polished rocks to tourists to make a living. He had a great conversation with a group of them that granted him an even deeper human feeling than the ships had, through the grace of human connection. He had never dreamed of this part of Namibia, this very real village life, until he turned away from the shipwreck and started talking to people. Rolf Potts, Vagabonding, and Saying Yes to Adventures Rolf Potts, author of Vagabonding , the book that helps you along your path, doesn’t want to tell you who to be. Like travel, he doesn’t try to change you; he just wants to help you be a more authentic you. When you’re around people, you’re not your authentic self. If you go somewhere you’ve never been before, however, without anybody you’ve ever met before, you can get out of your comfortable and protective patterns and help reveal your true self as you change over time. Breaking out of typical patterns and thinking about the important parts of who you really are are inevitable results of travel. Saying yes to things can help contribute to this, as well, but you should analyze the reasons you might say no, and use those reasons to see whether yes would be a good idea first. It’s October and the Rugby World Cup has kicked off in the UK and I thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to talk all about rugby, with a former England player and Captain. Catherine Spencer loves rugby, and always has, she was born into a rugby playing family and she started playing with her twin brother when she was just eight years old. She was one of the only girls playing on the team, but that did not stop her, she loved the game and she found out she was pretty good at it!  One of the great things about podcasts is you can hear the passion in peoples voices when they talk about something they love. In her own words, “Rugby is the best game in the world”. I was so inspired listening to Catherine, it’s made me want to go and give it a go and see what it’s all about! Rugby is a physical full on contact sport which generally women haven’t been involved in. It was not offered when I was at school and it was something that girls just didn’t do. But this attitude has been shifting especially over the past five, to ten years. More and more women are coming to love rugby and I wanted to understand how and why this change came about. In this podcast we get to hear one women rugby journey from playing mixed rugby with the boys to leading the England Team out on the field at Twickenham.  We discuss teamwork, leadership, going after what you want, dealing with failure, and how you can come back from utter defeat and be stronger than before. After retiring from rugby, Catherine started her own business which is about inspiring women! She has also partnered up with Endure to lead a team on a 150km unsupported trek across the Namib desert to the Skeleton Coast. The aim of this expedition is to raise awareness and help stop the illegal trade of wild animals in partnership with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. Catherine is on twitter @CathSpence8 I’m also on twitter @_TOUGH_GIRL please do send us a tweet once you’ve listened to this podcast episode. Don’t forget to subscribe and I would love for you to leave a review and share the podcast with your friends and family.  Let’s spread the motivation and inspiration!  New Tough Girl episodes are published every Tuesday morning at 7am. Have a fantastic week and I’ll be with you all next Tuesday with Robyn Baldwin an Alpha Female, MS Warrior & OCR lover! Sarah
