Piše Miša Gams, bereta Ivan Lotrič in Lidija Hartman. Neža Vilhelm je profesorica latinskega in grškega jezika ter svobodna prevajalka. Prevaja tako filme kot knjige ter vodi literarne prireditve. Njena pesniška zbirka z naslovom Sotto voce je razdeljena na štiri sklope. V ciklu Drobtinice se pesnica predaja eksistencialnim občutjem in želji po preprostem bivanju, razgalja svoje strahove in željo po bližini sočloveka, ki pa jo hkrati utruja: “Rada bi samo bila. / Pomirjena in zadovoljna,” v drugi jo tišina navdaja z navdušenjem in obenem z grozo, ki se izkaže za dialektično nasprotje hrepenenja: “Ko sem tu, / bi bila rada tam. / Ko sem tam, / hrepenim po tu. / Hrepenim in se bojim.” Zdi se, da za pesnico vse stvari v življenju prihajajo v polarnih dvojicah, ki so v osnovi “naelektrenega” značaja – podobno kot France Prešeren ugotavlja, da ni upanja brez strahu in nasprotno. Strah in bližino sprejema kot del življenja in hrepenenj in to v eni izmed “drobtinic” izrecno zapiše: “Hrepenim po bližini, / a se je bojim. / Strah sprejemam, / saj vem, da živim.” Neža Vilhelm pesmi večkrat začne s pomenljivim vprašanjem, na primer Kdo sem?, ali s ponavljajočim se nizom besed, ki ustvarja napetost z repeticijo posamične besede ali sorodne besedne zveze. Psihično razpoloženje se tu in tam prelije v doživeto občutenje trenutka tukaj in zdaj. “Čutim vodo. / Čutim veter. / Čutim vsak zavesljaj. / Čutim vsak premik. / Sup. / Super.” V drugem sklopu pesniške zbirke Sotto voce z naslovom Veselje avtorica opisuje vsakdanje stvari, ki razbarvajo sivino ter ji omogočijo vsaj začasen pobeg iz realnosti. Najsi gre za preživljanje prostega časa z jazbečarjem, ki ga imenuje “svobodni vilinec”, ali za čisto in plemenito ljubezen do prijatelja, ki jo sprejema takšno, kot je. Včasih ji je v pomoč že kratek filmski pobeg, drugič zadošča izlet na morje, kjer se nahaja kip “vražje dobrega glasbenika”: “Rada bi ujela staccato jezika, / ga prenesla v svojega.” Tudi naslov knjige Sotto voce je izposojen iz glasbe in pomeni navodilo, naj glasbenik nadaljuje v bolj umirjenem ali subtilnem tonu. In res se nam med branjem pesmi zazdi, kot da slišimo avtoričin nežni glas, ki išče načine, da se prebije skozi kaos zunanjih zvokov v upanju, da se tišina v njej razleže po vseh kotičkih (pre)glasnega sveta. V pesniškem sklopu z naslovom Iskanje se znova zateče k eksistencialnim vprašanjem in spraševanju, kdo v resnici je: “Sem igralka? / Seveda. / Imam masko? / Več mask. // Koliko vlog obvladam? / Precej. / Mi katera dela težave? / Kako biti čisto prava, pravcata jaz.” Pesnica se sprašuje, ali ima smisel raziskovati sebe, če ni nikogar ob njej, in se razglasi za največjo, a koristno laž v vesolju. V pesmih se trudi, da bi si povrnila zaupanje vase in v svoje delo, čeprav tu in tam ponikne v nihilistične misli: “Prevajam. / Zanič. // Pišem. / Zanič. // Sem. / Zanič. // Zakaj? / Za nič.” V zadnjem sklopu z naslovom Telo se Neža Vilhelm sooča z bolečinami v telesu, ki jih prinaša fibromialgija – bolezen, o kateri se šele v zadnjem času govori kot o psihosomatski bolezni, ki obolelemu bistveno otežuje življenje, zdravila zanjo pa ne poznamo. Pesnica tako že na začetku cikla ugotavlja “Telo je vsota bolečin. / Vsota diagnoz.” … ter se posveti doživljanju tegob v telesu “Spustim se in spremljam. / Čutim. / Butanje v glavi. / Trganje v mišicah. / Mrcvarjenje v križu. / Špikanje v lakteh. / Ščemenje v okončinah. / Teža.” Na več mestih motri diskrepanco med dušo in telesom, pri tem pa poudarja, da ji večina s svojimi pronicljivimi dovtipi in naivnim zasliševanjem ne pomaga, temveč ji zgolj otežuje vsakdanje življenje. Pravi, da ji nazadnje ostanejo tisti “pravi, čeprav nepričakovani,” ki jo sprejmejo takšno, kot je, brez sprenevedanja in utopičnih pričakovanj. Pesniški izraz Neže Vilhelm je skromen in minimalističen, brez grandioznih metafor – pesnica s svojimi krhkimi, a neposrednimi vzkliki drega v srž človekove biti in odtujenih medčloveških odnosov. Je glas vpijočega v puščavi, ki se ne pusti spreminjati zgolj zaradi družbenih stereotipov in obeta morebitnega udobja. Je vzklik nekoga, ki si v življenju zavestno izbere težjo pot in se prav zaradi prestanih muk razvije v najbolj žarečo “sončnico” na obzorju. Lahko bi rekli, da pesmi Neže Vilhelm s svojo enostavnostjo in neposrednostjo razgaljajo lažni dualizem in kažejo na to, da se pod številnimi statusi in družbenimi vlogami nahaja ista prestrašena in hrepeneča bit, ki jo med branjem zbirke Sotto voce začutimo tudi v sebi.

Melbourne-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Claire Deak talks about her debut solo album, Sotto Voce, and the two women composers of the Baroque whose music she recovered and reimagined – Francesca Caccini (1587-c. 1645) and Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677). Some of their compositions are intuitively sensed and worked into new neoclassical compositions by Claire using a range of Baroque and modern instruments, as well as innovative modern and analogue recording techniques that bend our concept of time. To mark the 70th anniversary of Britain's atomic tests at Emu Field in South Australia – the first on terrestrial land in Australia – author and academic Dr Elizabeth Tynan speaks about her book, The Secret of Emu Field: Britain's forgotten atomic tests in Australia. It was at Emu Field, SA on October 15, 1953 that a terrifying black mist spread across the land after an atomic bomb detonation (Totem 1), bringing death and sickness to Aboriginal people and other people in its path. Secrecy around the testing activities and its effects still exists today. Totem 2 was detonated on October 27, 1953. Elizabeth is an Associate Professor at James Cook University. SHULING GUO is an artist born in Guangdong Province, China who graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with a BFA in 2010. She immigrated to the United States in 2019, and now lives in Philadelphia and aboard the Sailing Vessel Selkie. In 2012, she had her first solo exhibition Secret Fragrance in Beyond Art Space in Beijing. Since then, her work has been widely exhibited in Beijing, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and among other places. Her works have been included in the permanent collections of Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum (Beijing) and Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (Guangzhou). In 2020 she held a solo exhibition in New York at Fou Gallery: 5—6 pm. Followed by a second solo exhibition at Fou Gallery in 2022 - Sotto Voce. In Autumn 2022 her work was featured in Platform, in partnership with David Zwirner gallery.

Trailing a short distance behind was an old carriage carrying four old, bent men wiping the condensation from the windows so they could see. The trucks arrived, the first carrying a crew of heavy laborers that had agreed to triple wage for an intense overnight shift, to quickly make work of demolishing the old Maestro's house, The Sotto Voce. The second held something under heavy rain cover and the third truck had a load of tethered barrels. Maureen Hynes's first book of poetry, Rough Skin, published by Wolsak and Wynn (Toronto, Ont), won the League of Canadian Poets' Gerald Lampert Award for best first book of poetry by a Canadian. Multifaceted British EDM producer Jon Gooch developed his Feed Me moniker in the late 2000s as a vehicle for his dubstep/electro-house hybrid tracks. Working with Deadmau5's Mau5trap imprint, Gooch's tracks of wobbly bass and scattershot drum programming evolved over a nonstop stream of singles, remixes for big-name artists like Robyn, and studio albums like 2013's Calamari Tuesday. Born in Hertfordshire, England, in 1984, Jon Gooch first made a name for himself under the alias Spor, crafting hard-edged drum'n'bass tracks. In 2008, he debuted the Feed Me moniker and a more dubstep-leaning sound on his first track, "The Spell." Still active as Spor (and a handful of other aliases), Gooch's work as Feed Me was largely released on the Deadmau5-run label Mau5trap. His first full-length album, Feed Me's Big Adventure, materialized in 2010, and new tracks came at a steady clip in the form of new singles or EP releases like 2011's To the Stars and 2012's Escape from Electric Mountain. He also increased his profile by remixing the likes of Chase & Status ("Let You Go"), Nero ("Innocence"), Gorillaz ("On Melancholy Hill"), and Robyn ("Call Your Girlfriend"). Calamari Tuesday, his second album, was released in 2013 via Gooch's own Sotto Voce imprint. Over the next four years, he averaged a new EP each year beginning with Feed Me's Psychedelic Journey (2014), followed by A Giant Warrior Descends on Tokyo (2015), Feed Me's Family Reunion (2016), and Feed Me's Existential Crisis (2017). He also collaborated with American producer Kill the Noise on the 2014 single "Far Away." In 2019, third full-length High Street Creeps arrived, this time back on Mau5trap. By this time, Gooch's style had developed from the dubstep trendiness of his earliest work into more varied and quick-changing compositions that included nods to his drum'n'bass background. Maintenant, quand on parle de musique arabe, on imagine un tout unifié, on pense à Aïcha de Cheb Khaled, comme si… le reste n’existait pas. Certes, il y a le raï popularisé en France depuis les années 1990, mais il y a beaucoup d’autres styles : la nouba arabo-andalouse devenue ‘Ala, le chaabi au Maroc et en Algérie, les Gnawas marocains avec leur musique infiniment riche des afrodescendants d’esclaves, l’équivalent des Gnawas en Algérie c’est la musique diwane, le makeli en Libye et aussi le stambali en Tunisie. Il y a chez nos amis turcs, romantiques invétérés et musulmans plus proches de la valeur de laïcité historiquement, une musique populaire traditionnelle et la türk pop quon connaît bien en France depuis le "mouaaaah" de Tarkan. Il y a la musique classique persane en Iran avec les dastgahs mais aussi des musiques folkloriques azeries, bandaries lors des mariages et la musique du Khorassan au répertoire de ballades amoureuses. Les genres musicaux du monde arabe et/ou musulman ont su bercer, charmer et faire danser des foules en tous genres… et je pèse mes mots.  Aujourd'hui, j’ai la joie d’accueillir une femme extraordinairement talentueuse et gracieuse, c’est OUM. Oum est autrice. Compositrice. Interprète. Chanteuse. Performeuse. Elle est une ambassadrice de la culture marocaine, défenseuse des femmes et des minorités. Elle chante le carrefour des civilisations humaines qu’on retrouve en chacune et chacun d’entre nous, et ce, en anglais, en français, en arabe et en amazigh. Elle mêle ses influences jazz, gospel, afrobeat, soul avec de la musique hassani des tribus du désert du sud du Maroc et de la musique soufie, propre aux grands mystiques de l’islam. Elle est écoutée par des centaines de milliers de personnes tous les mois, et je crois y contribuer pour beaucoup. Écoutez ses albums envoûtants, ses paroles enveloppantes, ses rythmes enivrants. Demondrae’s conducting career began in 1999 when he co-founded the wind ensemble at Alabama State University. Since that time, he has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous wind bands, brass bands, and symphony orchestras. His symphony orchestra debut came in 2008 conducting Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov with the Huxford Symphony Orchestra of the University of Alabama where he also served as its conductor from 2011-2013. He is currently in his 7th season as Resident Assistant Conductor of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra. Demondrae is also an active chamber musician. He plays first euphonium and trombone in the highly regarded Sotto Voce Quartet which tours extensively. The quartet has released four recordings; all of which have received stellar reviews. Viva Voce!: The Complete Quartets of Johns Stevens won the International Tuba/Euphonium Association award for best chamber music recording in 2006. The quartet has been featured several times on American Public Media’s, Performance Today. He also plays first baritone horn in the Brass Band of Battle Creek, a British brass band comprised of many of the world’s best brass and percussion performers. In addition to his chamber music work, Demondrae is in high demand as a euphonium/bass trumpet specialist for symphony orchestras. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Eastern Music Festival Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition to the Sotto Voce Quartet recordings, Demondrae released his first solo recording on the Summit Records label in 2005 entitled, Soliloquies. It received a 9/9 out of 10/10 from classicstoday.com and he was referred to as “having earned (his) stripes as one of the premiere euphonium players in the world”. Showing his dedication to new music, all of the music on the recording was written for him or with his playing in mind. His second album, Songs of a Wayfarer, was released in 2011. The latest recording, Snapshots: The Spirit of Collaboration, was released in March of 2014. Demondrae can also be heard on recordings with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the New South Jazz Orchestra. Currently, Demondrae is Professor of Music at Samford University where he teaches low brass and conducting while serving as conductor of the wind ensemble and Director of Graduate Studies. Filmed in California for the 3 weeks in December of 1959, the series aired in syndication from January 9 to July 2, 1960 and helped inspire the Home Run Derby event that is now held the day before the annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game. ESPN staged a revival of the show in 1989. The rules were similar to modern home run derbies, with two notable exceptions. If a batter did not swing at a pitch that was in the strike zone, that also constituted an out. Also, the contests were conducted in a fashion more similar to a baseball game than the modern home run derbies, in which a player has a set number of outs before his turn is over. Batters were given three outs per inning, and the player with the most home runs after nine innings won. The defending champion had the advantage of batting last; his opponent batted first. Any ball not hit for a home run was an out. The player did not have to swing at every pitch, but if a pitch was in the strike zone that also constituted an out, as did a swing and a miss. These rarely happened as the pitcher was supposed to give the batters good balls to hit. If the players were tied after nine innings, the Derby went into extra innings as per regular baseball. When a left-handed hitter played, a special rule was put into place. Wrigley Field in Los Angeles had an inner fence with palm trees and a brick wall located several feet behind it. Any pitch hit in that direction had to clear the wall or hit the top of the trees that stuck out over the wall to count as a home run. This was done because the distance was shorter to right field with the inner fence, which would otherwise give a lefty an unfair advantage. The distances were still slightly different once the deeper right field wall was factored in, but at 339 feet vs. 340 feet the difference was negligible. While one player was taking his turn at bat, the other player would sit at the host's booth and have a brief conversation, typically unrehearsed small talk about the contest itself or the player's performance that season. Willie Mays, who was a champion later in the run after losing in the initial contest to Mantle, joked with host Scott during his run that the host should be quiet while he batted for his third consecutive home run (for which Mays would receive a $500 bonus). Scott took him up on it, speaking into the microphone Sotto Voce, similar to a bowling or golf announcer, whenever Mays stepped up to the plate. Sometimes when the batter hit a ball into the deep outfield, the player in the booth would comment that it would have gone for extra bases in a real game, to which Scott replied that on Home Run Derby it's nothing but an out. Some players wore golf gloves during the show - a notable addition because the batting glove was still years away from being a normal part of a player's gear.
