This week's guest is David Pepose, the writer and co-creator of the Ringo Award-nominated comic Spencer & Locke as well as Going To The Chapel. from Action Lab Danger Zone. As the comic book industry experiences huge shakeups in publishing and distributing, creators like David Pepose are looking to more crowdfunding ventures such as Kickstarter to appeal to a wider audience that might not have the backing of a traditional publisher. Adrian speaks with David about what inspired his latest comic The O.Z., which is described as The Hurt Locker meets The Wizard of Oz. The conversation then shifts into the marketing of said title, as it is David's first Kickstarter comic and he breaks down his experience with a new outlet of potential readers. There's also talk about what the continual shift towards crowdfunding means for the direct market and the future of indie/mainstream comics and coming to the realization that we're not Keanu Reeves (but that's okay).

Chances are, you’ve had to find a way to earn some extra money at some point in your life. Most of us are not above a little hard work and elbow grease to help us meet a fiscal goal, but at what point does financial necessity supersede personal integrity? In BABYSITTER’S BLACK BOOK (2015), starring Spencer Locke, Angeline Appel, and Ryan McPartlin, we meet a group of high school girls who turn their babysitting business into an underground prostitution ring to help pay for college. At first, it’s all fun and cash and rap videos…but when the cold reality of felonious underage sex work sinks in, our heroines start to think that maybe they should have first considered financial aid. We also discuss the REAL perpetrators on whom this “inspired by true events” tale was based (Spoiler alert: they were NOT white upper-middle class college hopefuls with privilege on their side), as well as what the effect of legalization and regulation of vice may have on society. Also, we hate to break it to you, but Rachel isn’t going to cry when you die. This episode is one for the books! This movie is available to watch on the Lifetime Movie Club app and Amazon Prime. If both Salvatore brothers are emo at the same time it actually causes a rip in the space time continuum and the vampire diaries as we know it would cease to exist. It’s a little known but very true fact. Spencer Locke is here and we MUST mention her by name otherwise she becomes too powerful. David Pepose is a writer’s writer. He’s worked as a crime and politics reporter, wrote thousands of pieces as a comics reviewer and now he’s writing his own unique comic book series— Going to the Chapel and Spencer & Locke (with more projects to come). During his interview with Shah Emami, David talks about his background as a reporter, promoting his books at conventions, learning to take rejection and criticism, how he got his first comics published, his time at DC Comics, bringing in new comic book fans, Spencer & Locke, Going to the Chapel, future projects and more! Spencer & Locke (and it’s sequel— Spencer & Locke 2) is Shah’s favorite book by David. It’s a dark twist on Calvin & Hobbes as it tells the story of a traumatized cop and his… imaginary giant talking panther. David worked on S&L with artist Jose Santiago Jr. It’s dark as hell yet heartwarming and an addicting read. The last issue of Going to the Chapel by Pepose and artist Gavin Guidry came out recently. It’s a heist book that takes place during a wedding. A rom-com crime story. Can’t go wrong with that. Pepose proves he can put compelling spins on familiar genres, making his books heavy-hitters with seasoned and new comics readers alike. Ever wonder what would happen if Calvin and Hobbes grew up in Sin City? Writer David Pepose did just that with his comic book, Spencer & Locke – which is also co-created and drawn by Jorge Santiago, Jr. and published by Action Lab Comics. I was blown away after reading all four issues! And can't wait for the movie! Oh wait, I was so excited that I jumped the gun! We caught up with David at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 and on this interview, we not only get some insight behind the development of Spencer & Locke, but we learn what comics books influenced his journey into becoming a writer, we find out he ignored the creative itch for a long time and started writing Spencer and Locke on a dare and we also discuss some possible actors for the possible Spencer & Locke movie adaptation (fingers crossed). He also gave some great answers in our Thunder Round! I'm sure glad he scratched that creative itch and that he graciously took time to talk with us at SDCC…because Spencer & Locke is one badass comic book. We hope you enjoy our conversation with David Pepose!
